so this afternoon look for clouds on the peninsula. on the coast side and sunshine around the bay and inland and a whole lot of it. near 60 at half moon bay. mid to upper 60s for san francisco. low to mid70s for the rest of the bay. >> thank you. the biden administration is urging americans to get vaccinated as the delta variant spreads. >> the number of cases is up across the country. jobina fortson with the growing concern for people who are not vaccinated. there's an average of 26,000 new cases of covid-19 reported every day and four out of five of them involve the delta variant. cdc director dr. rochelle walensky testified yesterday. she said the delta variant is spreading fast in unvaccinated areas. >> delta variant now represents it 83% of sequenced cases. vaccines are widely available across the country and this suffering and loss is simply

and entirely preventable. >> hospitals in several states are up to capacity. some doctors say they're reliving the worst of 2020. if trends continue, many cities could implement covid restrictions again. >> thank you. a new study raises questions about wheffective aga variant. researchers at new york university found pfizer and moderna's vaccines are about 95% effective. they cob colluded that the j&j vaccine may be more effective with a booster shot. doctors say that the study hasn't been peer reviewed yet and it's based on blood samples from a few dozen people. >> this type of lab study isn't really what we're looking for. we're looking for more real world data of vaccines over time. >> stanford infectious disease doctor is a principle investigator for these on going j&j vaccine trials. what matters most is who ends

up in the hospital with coronavirus. that's mostly been unvaccinated people. the cdc does not recommend booster shots at this time. happening today, state superintendent is holding a virtual meeting for teens to talk about vaccine awareness and a safe back to school return. the zoom meeting is going to be held at 3:00 p.m. on the california education's facebook and instagram pages. it includes a special recorded message from several gold state warriors players. safety learning loss during covid and rebuilding relationships. that's the focus for one school district making the final touches on plans for returning to in person learning. amy hollyfield live in richmond. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're talking about the west contra costa school district. this covers richmond, san pablo, hercules. about 2800 students and they're announcing they will be focusing on not only the students physical health as we

deal with this covid virus, but also their mental health. so the west contra costa school district announcing plans. all students will be coming back to in person learning and they'll be required to wear masks, stay three feet apart from others and to do at home health screenings every day. the school district will also focus on students mental health after a year of isolation. and their academic status and how much learning loss each student suffered after a year on zoom. >> they can really key in on where are the gaps in our students and their learning and then being able to put in the strategies, the teaching and the interventions and the acceleration practices as well to move our students. >> to address mental health issues the teachers will spend the first six weeks focusing on building relationships with tsn social and emotional needs. this district says everyone will be coming back in person

and the district will be having informational meetings next week to start to help parents understand what this school year will look like. it's a complicated plan. much more so than a typical school year. reporting live in richmond, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. hundreds of san francisco bars may require proof of vaccination. the san francisco bar alliance is considering whether to issue a statement recommending only vaccinated patrons be allowed in. signs will go up outside participating bars. a formal decision will not be made until next week. one alliance member reportedly has started to require proof. now to the latest on the a's proposed ballpark at howard terminal in oakland. the city council voted 6-1 on a nonbinding agreement for the a's to build at howard terminal. the plan would see the city assuming responsibility for off site transportation and infrastructure improvements and would increase the a's

affordable housing commitment. the team is already raising concerns. a's president tells abc on. the team has said it is prepared to negotiate and move to investigation if thit was so seen. that could be good. that could be bad. we need to analyze all aspects of that. >> oakland offers something that no other city in the world can offer. the views from howard terminal are equal to none. >> and yes, it is true, it is 104 degrees in las vegas today and i think it's a nice 72 degrees here in oakland. >> the next step is to finalize the environmental plan and a binding development agreement. the a's want that by the end of the year. a's fans we spoke to made it clear they cannot bear to see their city losehere really

the her ðfire. area of the deadly 2018 camp fire. ash from the up along the s of nearby lake almanor. the tamirack fire has burned 39,000 acres. it's threatening. some of them have been seeing the devastation firsthand before having to leave. >> so many things that where to begin. you know, it's total loss. you have to walk away. that's been the hardest thing. >> lightning sparked this fire. thunderstorms in the mountains pushed the fire toward the california-nevada border. the smoke has drifted to

gender repeal party sparked a fire. they pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and 29 other charges. the fire started at no horod. ash in san jose is currently under investigation. look at this video. this car crashed through a fence at an apartment complex on fruitdale avenue and landed in the pool yesterday afternoon. firefighters were able to pull the driver out. they say the person was shaken up but otherwise was okay. and thankfully nobody was in the pool when this happened. since we're talking about pools. an oregon couple is making quite a bit of money by renting out their pool. they have earned more than $100,000 in less than a year. so look at it. it is a pretty nice pool. it has res. thfamilyol been sitting untouched since their youngest daughter moved

hill and gilroy. low to mid70s for most of the peninsula. you can see the cloud cover along the coast. temperatures in the upper 50s. mid60s with more sunshine downtown. south san francisco. sausalito. the breezes keep the north bay coast around 60. you will have more sunshine than anywhere else along the coast. low to mid80s through most of the north bay from it santa rosa northward. upper 80s to low 90s. low to mid70s for a lot of the east bay. oakland, you're right mind in the upper 60s. 81 in san ramon. away from the coast, not quite as breezy as yesterday. the coast up and down pretty clear of cloud cover. that's impressive for this time of the year. look how hot it's going to be in yosemite. broiling there. tonight we're back into the 50s with a little drizzle along the peninsula coast. as far as the seven day forecast, you can see we drop down a couple of degrees tomorrow. we warm up about 6 degrees friday then we hang around the

you're watching abc mornings live. we're starting by checking in with mike. >> we're off to a gray start. the clouds are late coming back. they slept in it a little bit. good for them. you can see a beautiful from to. mari layer ismpssand a lot of sunshine is on the way. even on the coast outside the peninsula we'll have a lot of sunshine. temperatures in the upper 50s. low 60s along the coast. you can see 65 to 75 from san francisco. to around the bay. mid70s to mid80s. lower upper 80s. nothing extreme in today's forecast. we'll take a look at the monsoon moisture. see if it returns and brings us a thunderstorm threat coming up. we have developing news san jose police are investigating a crash that it happened near monterey road last night. police say the waa

man. it's not clear what led the crash. depingtory and brf this more details as it comes into our newsroom. school districts putting the final touches on plans for returning to in person learning. it's something we're following closely because we know it's important to so many parents. one district just released its plan. there's an emphasis on safety addressing learning loss, rebuilding relationships. amy hollyfield live in richmond with what the district is working on. this is the west contra costa school district. this covers the area of richmond, san pablo, the hercules pocket of the east bay. they'll be focusing on kids physical, academic and mental health. the district says all kids will be coming back for in person learning. they'll be required to wear masks, stay three feet apart and do home health screenings. some students do feel prepared

for these rules. >> definitely the people around you you can't be close to people like that. probably just interacting with people won't be the same. you have to wear masks so you can't see peoples face like that. >> you feel safe? >> yeah. don't have any worries. i feel safe. >> reporter: part of the plan calls for teachers to spend the first six weeks addressing students social and emotional needs after a year of isolation and assessing their learning loss after a year of zoom and then they will adjust. it'll be a different year. different plan this year. district will be holding informational meetings starting next week for parents to give them an idea what to expect. reporting live in richmond, amy hollyfield. air purifying units can help prevent the spread of covid-19 in the classroom. the mayo clinic and the university of minnesota took a closer look at the air in

schools. researchers studied what would happen if an infected student were to spread droplets. they collected samples from desks, ipads. classrooms with a portable air purifying unit in addition to an hvac system had five times lower particle concentration in the air. >> they should be put at ease. we have solutions available. there's a lot of information that is now available to school administrators and they should be comfortable of the fact they're looking into it and hopefully will be able to implement these solutions. >> more on this story including what the cdc is recommending is coming up at 7:00 on gma. alarming new numbers show the delta variant is spreading fast among the unvaccinated. the highly transmissible variant is estimated to account for four out of every five new cases. dr. fauci says vaccines protect against serious illness. fauci got into a heated exchange with senator rand paul. the kentucky senator accused

have tested positive for the virus and there's concern the situation may get worse. olympic athletes in tokyo are hoping they can compete. >> that's a doomsday scenario. i'm trying not to focus in on that. >> canceling the olympics could mean huge academic losses. senior business leaders plan on skipping the opening ceremony. the game's budget is about $15 billion but the actual cost may be up to $20 billion. >> wow. okay. thanks. bay area air quality management officials are expected to vote on a proposal that would limit air pollution from two refineries. postponed a vote on regulating a refinery. it would force the refineries to install potentially hundreds of millions of dollars worth of equipment to clean the

particulate matter that's released. wildfires are becoming more devastating and temperatures are rising. san francisco is raising the bar to combat climate change. supervisors have set new, more ambitious goals. they want the city to get to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. they want to reduce the carbon footprint by 80% in 2050. supervisors declared a climate emergency two years ago. breaking down the alarming rise of in flight violence and word of passengers going after tsa officers. you're looking live at the big board at the new york stock exchange. up by 190 points gh >>anall hodog today. it is national hot dog day. there's a back and forth over the future of the food and one of the biggest brands is stepping in. first we get a check of your

weather from mike nicco. >> you can see the spreading of the marine layer as it tries to make up for lost time. it's only been within the last hour, hour and a half it's pushed into the bay. it's going to keep us pretty calm. not much of a wind out there with it outside of the usual spots. so enjoy the fact we only have a small craft advisory on the bay. running errands it's going to be sunny. or this cloud deck quickly returns back to the coast. there's actually a lot of dry air to be had outside. you can see the clouds haven't made it all the way into the east bay valleys and they probably won't. uv index remains high. temperatures around san francisco where it's mostly cloudy. around 52 in sunnyside to around 55 in neighborhoods. temperatures in the 50s everywhere. the extremes would be heelsburg at 48. you can see out around pittsburgh and tracy we're in the mid60s. where do we go from here.
