it's around here. >> tonight, stanford is reporting 7 break-through covid- 19 cases among vaccinated students. >> the university says all were symptomatic and all tested pozzive in the past week. students tell us there are still plenty of unanswered questions. >> reporter: the rising covid- 19 cases in california and across the country is hitting closer to home. thursday evening, stanford university alerted its students and told us in part "we are seeing some of this in our own community. there have been 7 new positive covid-19 cases among stanford students. these are cases among vaccinated cases. on campus, these cases university's announcement has left them with many unanswered questions.

>> is it graduate students? undergraduate students? freshman? i would like to know who it is. >> reporter: according to the university's covid-19 dash board reflecting student cases, stanford's overall positivity rate is .07. the university told students each newly infected person was symptomatic. covid has the potential to severely impact not only yourself but people around you. infectious disease better dr. yvonne maldonado tells us the risk of exposure even among those who are vaccinated goes up. stressing vaccines are still highly effective. >> it's still a little scary, just knowing it's on campus and it's around here. >> reporter: the 7 break- through cases, a reminder we are still very much in the middle of a pandemic. >> i think a lot of students are going to take it seriously. i think a lot of students on

campus are worried about the situation. and tonight, three bay area counties are strongly recommending employers require workers to be vaccinated. they made that announcement today. abc 7 news reporter kate larson spoke with business owners. >> reporter: san francisco, contra costa and santa clara counties urged all employers thursday to require covid vaccines. some, like lori thomas, have already made it a mandate. >> everybody is fully vained and we won't hire unless we can see proof of vaccine. >> reporter: thomas is the executive director of the golden gate restaurant association. all of her restaurant employees were fully vaccinated by the end of focused on education, bu yes, we had some tearful

we are yet at another pivotal moment in this pandemic. >> reporter: a cdc advisory panel suggests a booster shot could help protect americans with compromised immune systems, but adds more data is needed. dr. anthony fauci is asked about booster shots. well is no reason to believe people who have taken the j&j vaccine are in need of a booster dose of any sort. >> reporter: a rare auto immune disorder. out of roughly 13 million doses of the j&j vaccine administrated, there have been just 100 reported cases of the disorder. 95 were serious, including one death. still, the panel expressed strong support for continued use of the vaccine. well is no vaccine that we have today that doesn't have some very small risk of an adverse outcome. every vaccine we have today

the smoke from wildfires burning across the west coast could impact the bay area this weekend. >> let's touch base with sandy. >> unfortunately it looks like we're going to be seeing hazy conditions and possibly some smoke at the lower elevations as well. increasing smoke aloft initially possibly impacting us at the surface, with hazy skies expected sunday and monday. tomorrow, you'll notice not a lot of smoke here locally. mainly over the dixie and tamarack fires. as we head into sunday, the pinks, which is heavier smoke, in the upper parts of the atmosphere starts to drift in our direction. near the surface, the highest concentration of smoke will still remain at least through saturday evening in that general vicinity. by sunday, things could look very different. i'll be back with a complete look at the forecast coming up. welcome news for thousands

a major announcement from the employment development department tonight. it affects hundreds of thousands of unemployed workers waiting a long time for their benefits. >> it's been pending for a month now. >> reporter: kim lives in sacramento and has been unemployed off and on since march of last year. she says she made a mistake when filing her edd paperwork and is now blocked from receiving payments. >> i needed to pay my rent, car payment, utilities. >> reporter: now that money may soon be coming her way. the center for workers' rights filed a lawsuit and reached an agreement with the edd.

so there's no longer an automatic stop payment when there's an issue. >> who has received at least one payment on their claim already, they're considered continued eligibility claimant, will continue to receive conditional payment while the edd continues to investigate. >> reporter: there are so many claims, edd is rolling out the payments in batches, beginning as soon as tomorrow. >> they will receive a notice, either on their ui online account or in the mail, alerting them to the fact that it is a conditional payment. >> reporter: meaning if edd finds someone is not eligible for the money, they'll have to pay it back. these payments will only be for continued claims, not for new ones. >> initial eligibility, which is when a claimant first files for benefits, those claims still require edd makes a determination about eligibility before issuing payment. >> reporter: those with claims
