here. so far more than 162 million americans are fully vaccinated, that's about 49% of the total population. let's go back to abc's trevor ault who is also in times square with the very latest. trevor, good morning once again. >> good morning, again, whit. mayor de blasio says a mandatory vaccine passport is being seriously considered for most social activities here in new york city and the goal is to make the vaccines more appealing. right now, there is a truly alarming rise in cases and hospitalizations across the country that may not peak for months. overnight, a potential major change for fully vaccinated americans. "the new york times" reporting senior health officials in the biden administration now believe a third shot may be necessary for recipients of the pfizer or moderna vaccines who are 65 and older or who have compromised immune systems. this possible booster shot comes amid a grim pandemic outlook heading into the fall. a new model predicting the summer surge we're seeing now could keep rising until

mid-october. >> what we don't know is how bad this is going to get. >> reporter: st. louis is bringing back indoor mask mandates for everyone, but the missouri attorney general says he'll file a lawsuit monday to stop it as the delta variant runs rampant through the state. >> there's a whole bunch of people who are unvaccinated here in the heart of the midwest which is why i think we're the epicenter of this outbreak with the delta virus. >> reporter: this is not just a midwestern problem. over the past two weeks, 38 states have seen their daily case averages double, triple or even quadruple, with one in every five new cases coming out of florida. overnight, a federal court lifting pandemic rules for florida-based cruise ships arguing the cdc regulations cannot be enforced but should, rather, be used as guidelines. in sacramento, mia and her husband brad wanted to wait to get vaccinated but brad became infected four weeks ago and died last weekend. one of his final facebook posts reading, if you haven't gotten

the vaccination please go get it. this is nothing nice. >> it's a real tragedy that this had to happen because we weren't on board by getting vaccinated. >> reporter: and yesterday, dr. anthony fauci was asked if the return of mask mandates might deter people from getting the vaccine. he said getting vaccinated is about a lot more than whether or not you wear a mask. it's about keeping yourself out of the hospital and keeping yourself from dying. eva. >> so many of these issues very polarizing for people. trevor ault, thank you. now to the olympic games beginning with an opening ceremony unlike any we've seen before and now competition is officially under way. let's go to abc's kenneth moton who has been there for it all. he is in tokyo for us this morning. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, eva. also good -- i say it, good evening, because it's evening here but good morning to you in e ates, the first full day of olympic competition here in tokyo was a busy one.

swimming and gymnastics, main events, u.s. women's soccer back in action tonight coming off that rare loss to sweden. take a look, last night, an olympics opening ceremony like we've never seen before, half of the 11,000 athletes in the games parading into a nearly empty 70,000-seat stadium in front of global leaders, foreign dignitaries and the media but no fans from the public. team usa had about 100 athletes participate while usa gymnastics skipped the ceremony over covid concerns. protesters lined the streets outside the stadium demanding the end to these games because of the ongoing pandemic. we've learned at least four tokyo police officers who worked these games have tested positive for covid-19. 15 others are self-isolating and another example of how things can change in an instant the very first beach volleyball match of these games, the czech republic against japan had to be called off.

>> you look amazing. >> thank you. >> so, fresh off its 20 emmy nominations, "ted lasso" is scoring big with season two. give us the inside scoop on that. >> okay, well, we all know the famous catchphrase from the tom cruise movie, you had me at hello. well, i think we rename it, you had me at "ted lasso." the second i mention this title to anybody who has seen this incredible series off its 20 emmy nominations for season one, people just light up. they're already sold. but season two just dropped on apple tv plus. well, there's a catch. episode 1, that is, this is a 12-episode season and for people who like to binge i'm so sorry to say you'll have to wait week to week to see it. the good folks at apple sent me the first eight episodes and i'm using the "b" word, better than season one. lightning definitely strikes twice. "ted lasso" is as lovable as ever but it's the entire cast that are the mvps of this series.

romantic lead, i saw this on the big screen in imax and he really has his game face on for this one, he underwent months of martial arts training for this role, the funny thing about the "snake eyes" character in the comics is he always wore a hoodie, never showed his face, but if you're booking henry golding to lead in a movie you're showing his face. he's a zaddy borrowing an expression from the last segment. >> fair enough. and, nikki, real quick, finally an interview with major r-e-s-p-e-c-t. tell us about that. >> yes, so, jennifer hudson, in anticipation of her life and career-defying role playing the queen of soul, aretha franklin in "respect," she sat down with the queen of interviews, oprah winfrey. by the way, they definitely called each other the night before because no two people have ever matched their outfits better on television, but she is talking about getting into the role of -- playing aretha franklin and how much it took, aretha handpicked her for the role before she passed away a couple of years ago and she shared all of the insights into

controversial topic for us, the idea of watermelon with other things. so tell us what you've added to the watermelon to make it a spicy salad. >> oh, watermelon is delicious on its own, i mean, any summer barbecue needs to have watermelon, but i think that watermelon is best when it's paired with something a little bit spicy, something a little bit salty, so here i've got some watermelon and some pineapple and basically what you do is you make a quick little vinaigrette here, which has got some onions, jalapeno because you got to spice up the summer sides and some oil and a little bit of sherry vinegar and you got to let that sit out for about ten minutes, kind of get that marinating, and then when it's done pour it over your pineapple and watermelon and then you want to quickly season that with a little bit of salt and pepper. i'm a southern boy myself, so i was always taught to put salt on my watermelon, and you want to mix that up and then you can kind of let that hang out in the

refrigerator for maybe 10, 15 minutes, and then right before you're ready to serve, you want to mix it with feta, and if you've got mint in your garden or cilantro, i've got cilantro here from my garden known as whole foods, and then you got to mix that up and to serve, obviously my favorite thing to eat with watermelon is tajin, a chili lime salt. i don't know if you like those carts that you see sometimes in times square outside the office with mango and watermelon and some tajin on top. it's delicious. a great way to impress people. >> thumb's up on it. >> i like it. >> i'm eating all the feta out of it. >> i'm eating it all. great. >> delicious. >> let me dig in with you in a minute. next up, a poolside slaw great for our vegan friends. how do you make the lemon tahini slaw? >> oh, yes, well, my big party trick is tahini that is whipped up like mayonnaise, so it's perfect for your vegan friends,

tahini has kind of a molassesy type mixture. when you mix it with lemon, mustard, you add water, it turns into an aioli consistency, keep mixing and i promise it'll come together like that. what you do is, you have your cabbage here. i've got a little bit of a mixture of some lemon zest, some capers, and i'm just going to add that in with the cabbage, season it, some lemon juice and then i'm going to add this right over it. mix that up with some snap peas and some radishes and you have a beautiful, beautiful summer slaw. >> love it. this last one, big-time summertime favorite, corn. how are we going to work with this? >> you got to have the corn. oh, yeah, so i have grilled corn here with some grilled jalapenos, some nice charred scallions, and while those are cooling you want to mix together your dressing, which is buttermilk, a little bit of feta, this comes from my great

and niece tessa. right outside our window in times square. so great to have you all with us. we'll jump right in here. first up, my daughters love this stuff, slime. tessa, of course, is going to show us how it's done. how do we get started with the slime, guys. >> this one is so easy, it's just two ingredients, cornstarch and water, and it's all natural. now, the trick is you want to put your cornstarch in a dish and then slowly add your water until you get a nice thick consistency, now this is cool because it's a liquid when you run it through your fingers but then it's also a solid when you squish it. now, tessa, what can you add to the slime to make it really cool? >> you could add like glitter and beads and it will just make it like really cool. >> yeah, you can add food coloring. what color would you choose? >> i would choose blue because, you know. >> you're wearing a blue shirt. that makes sense. >> if you want to save it put it in a zip top bag or let it dry out and just add water the next day. this is tons of fun for two bucks.

so fun. >> that is amazing. also i like her ideas. glitter, beads. blue, you know. >> obviously blue. >> next, anderson is making art out of shaving cream. tell us about that. >> we're doing shaving cream prints here. really simple. use shaving cream. the fluffy kind not the gel kind, mix it up. we have food coloring in there. you can also use paint and give it a swirl and anderson will dip the paper right in the print here. go for it, push it down. then when you reveal it you have a beautiful colored marbled stationery. you can wipe it off with a little ruler or a piece of cardboard and, anderson, what is good? what can you do? >> well, you can put it on stationery and also scrapbooking, journaling, lettering to your friends. it's really creative and you can do it with lots of things that involve paper. >> super fun and you can actually use this for finger painting. if you add glue you can use it for puffy paint. >> that was always one of my
