widespread policy among their locations. in san francisco, matt boone, abc7 news. >> if you are vaccinated and want proof on the go, the state has a website where you can download an electronic version of the card you received when you first got your shot. some bars and restaurants are helping to point people to the site. the website url is on your screen. we have a link to it on our website. as covid cases surge, two north bay counties are asking their residents to get vaccinated before a rise in hospitalizations stressing their medical center. luz pena is part of our vaccine team and spoke to people in marin and sonoma county on how they will boost vaccinated numbers. >> reporter: it is the tale of two highly vaccinated counties. both seeing a fast up tick in covid cases. >> it is about 85% now of our residents who are infected with the delta variant. >> we started to notice an

increase in our hospital census. >> reporter: sonoma county reporting a thousand active reporting cases for the first time since march. in sonoma county, 22% of the population is unvaccinated. that is about 120,000 people. and according to the state's latest projection, by august 21st, there could be about 50 people in the hospital with covid. and, 14 deaths. they say all this is preventable. >> we have a mobile health van reaching out to places where some of our homeless patients are at to get vaccinated. last but not least. in our hospitals across providence we are providing vaccinations for patients at the time of discharge. >> reporter: marin county has one of the highest vaccination rates in the state with more than 85% of the population fully vaccinated. as the delta variant takes hold, what they anticipated happened. this week, an unvaccinated resident died. the first covid death in two months. marin county reporting 258 covid cases in the last two

abc7news.com/vaccine. new at 11:00 now, highway 4 in concord remains closed as the chp investigates a shooting. one person was shot and killed. another struck and has moderate injuries. after the shooting, officers say the victim's black toyota crashed into a guardrail at the top of the port chicago off ramp. it appears there are bullet holes in the driver side door. chp shut down all westbound lanes of the highway as the officers gathered evidence. a suspect vehicle left the scene, but officers have not identified a vehicle or any potential suspects. at least two people are dead and four others wounded following a shooting outside a nightclub in san rafael, that shooting happened on third street and luten's place in downtown san rafael just before 11:00 last night. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has more on the investigation. >> i heard gunshots. i saw some flashes from a barrel. >> reporter: warren says he and his friends took cover when

they saw a man firing a gun at luten's place. >> at least ten bullets were fired in rapid succession. >> reporter: the windows of this hair salon shattered by flying bullets. a 62-year-old man, possibly homeless, was wounded in the gunfire. >> at first, i did think it was gunshots. th violence unfolded around 10:30 friday night near a nightclub on 4th street where a concert was happening. but it is unclear what prompted the shooting. >> some where in that area, there was gunfire exchanged from a high powered automatic rifle. >> reporter: witnesses saw a dodge charger speeding from the scene. police stopped the car on wolf grate and found two 25-year-old men inside with gunshot wounds. one victim from fairfield, the other from pittsburgh. about the same time, police say two men from stockton were involved in this crash. one was dead, the other wounded. >> while that was going on, we

got a call from a local hospital that a vehicle had driven up to the local hospital. door opened, victim dropped on the ground. >> reporter: the victim died. officials condemning the night of gun violence and property damage. >> this is something you don't want to see in your town. where, a business here has its windows completely shot out. right in the middle of a busy downtown area. it is unacceptable. >> reporter: those bullet holes hard to miss in this concrete pillar. i got a statement from david spiller who says his staff is working tirelessly to bring the people who committed this crime to justice. his thoughts and prayers going out to the victims and their families. they are asking for any information the public might have on this crime. cornell bernard, abc7 news. now to the major wild fires in california. the dixie fire in butte and plumus counties is now the largest in the state.

the tamarac fire in the southern sierra remains out of control. the tamarac fire is moving quickly and scorched more than 66,000 acres. water drops like the one you see here are part of the assault on the fire burning on the california nevada border. several homes so far have been lost to those flames. nevada's governor has declared a state of emergency for one county in the fire's path. a couple who is prepared to evacuate are also members of the fire protection district. >> so, once we got our own family settled we would make sure we had our radios and all we needed to respond to emergencies. >> it started as a lightning strike and is just 4% contained. crews expect full containment august 31st. northwest of thstate continues its run. the dixie fire now threatens how thousands of homes and businesses. most along lake almanor's west

by the u.s. women's soccer team not participating in the opening ceremonies paying off. jill biden attended that match and biden also joined the french president to take on a three on three basketball game making its olympic debut. moving on now, a convicted serial killer known as the dating game killer died today at a hospital. 77-year-old rodney alcala was on death row since 2010. a jury in orange county convicted him for the murders of four women and a girl in the late 70s . investigators linked him to other deaths in four other states and say his true victim count will never be known. he was known as the dating game killer because he was a contestant on the show back in 1978. prison officials say he died of natural causes. santa cruz police say they arrested two people for vandalizing a black lives matter mural in front of city hall last night.

the police chief shared a picture that showed tire marks all over the mural. the suspects are 18 and 19 years old. both face charges of felony vandalism and conspiracy to commit a felony. volunteers painted the mural last september. the mayor says the mural will be repaired. more people today joined the ranks of front line health care workers here in the bay area. mission college held a graduation ceremony at its santa clara campus for both this year's and last year's registered nursing classes. due to the pandemic, the 2020 class did not get a penning ceremony and instead was included in this year's ceremony. new nurses talked about how the pandemic changed the way they learned and the way they will work. >> we had to take zo. and then, also, go to the hospital. but with determination, we were able to do it. >> all we can do as nurses is continue to educate. educate the population. get people vaccinated and do the best we can to keep

moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. now, to the latest on the covid surge. with the u.s. recorded more than 43,000 new cases per day, up nearly 51% in the past week. some states are seeing hospitals once again fill up with covid patients. areas with the lowest vaccination rates are getting hit the hardest. the ceo of the uams medical center in arkansas says he is seeing anti-vaccine attitudes change. >> all the patients who were hospitalized here, upon recovery, have changed their mind and would get vaccinated. once they are discharged. >> there are new questions about the need for vaccine booster shots as well. the new york times reports senior health officials believe a third shot may be necessary for immunocompromiseed. for immunocompromiseed. the cdc says more evidence is needed. in hayward today, the la familia group organized a food

billions of people watch the olympics. it is where stars are born. usually, the first star of the games is not a person, but where the opening ceremony takes place. this year, it is japan's brand new national stadium. reporter david ono is in los angeles and spoke with the architect. >> reporter: the beauty of japan lies within its simplicity. a vivid green rice field. the powerful pacific. centuries old temples. in japan, it is about connection to nature, tradition, culture. with the smallest gesture makes the smallest statement. in this society, to simply give a gift, not expensive, but meaningful, is so important. a sign of respect. when you come to visit, it is

common to receive a gesture of welcome. upon my visit, i received this book. inside, e inscription to david. kuma and his latest creation will be at thstage for the toky olympics. achieving a level of fame reserved for the finest in the world. yet, this thoughtful man takes a moment to welcome a stranger. >> we are all set here. are you set? >> reporter: while quarantining in my hotel room, i had the honor of talking to kuma who says the stadium is not just a building but a symbol of his country. instead of just concrete and steel, he added something he sees is very important to japanese tradition. wood. 47 types of wood from the 47 prefectures that make up japan. as big as the stadium is, he still wants it to show just the

opposite. >> so, tokyo, we still have many small narrow streets. and, those with small houses and shops. >> reporter: more remarkable, in a daring move, he designs the giant venue without air- conditioning. >> we tried to bring natural without air-conditioning, people can feel the wind. >> reporter: it is about building for the future. being in harmony with the earth. in japan, there is no political debate about global warming. there is an understanding here that we have to change. and, in front of the billions who will be watching the olympics, kuma's olympic stadium could be a unifying force.
