navigating a changing night life. more san francisco bars are requiring customers to prove they've been vaccinated. good morning. it's sunday july 25. this is abc7 news at 9:00 live on abc7, hulu live and wherever you stream. let's get a quick look at the weather. good morning. a lot of fog out there around the bay. inland it's a clear start. as we look at live doppler 7 you see the fog through vallejo, parts of soutsoutsout marin. the layer is somewhat compressed and we are looking at temperatures pretty mild

where the sun is. 63 in san jose, 62 mountain view, 55 downtown. a sunny san jose, temperatures will be cooler, that sea breeze throughout the afternoon, mid 60s with winds up to 30 miles an hour by the delta and 54 with fog in santa rosa. partly cloudy skies, high and mid level clouds increase. we'll be looking at more humid air in inland valleys where numbers will reach around 90. we could see lightning in the next days. i will detail that outlook. >> thank you. an oak reunion store is cleaning up after a car slammed through its store front. it happened around 7:45 last night on the corner and 17th. an employee heard a loud screech and a few seconds later a mercedes careened into the front of the store. the employee says this was the second crash in the same

intersection in two months. he wants speed bumps in the area to slow cars. some san francisco bar goers have been caught inside. we can learn more details detai the new requirement. people have been responding. >> i am 21, i promise. >> reporter: it's not just your id you will need to get in. proof of vaccination is required too. >> it makes the whole night what it is supposed to be. >> reporter: the owner says when they reopened in june, they were one of the first small venues in the city to require vaccination but got rid of the policy when things were looking good in early july. >> as soon as the delta variant was becoming obviously more prevalent, we felt for the safety of of our patrons and staff, our performers, it was

the right thing to do. >> reporter: a drag performer says the come back of the entire industry will rely on people feeling comfortable. >> i think there is a lot of trepidation around coming back to live venues. >> reporter: in addition to making patrons calmer it can have another side effect. >> if you really want to come see the show, it gives a little incentive to do the right thing for the community at large. >> reporter: the policy has been in effect for a week, catching some off guard. >> i have it but i don't have it with me. >> reporter: l.j. jones says she recently got vaccinated but had to sit outside because she didn't have the proof with her. >> i won't come back here. >> reporter: for cruz she came specifically because of the policy. >> it makes me feel safer as a customer. >> reporter: she hopes more bars will follow suit. it is possible they will. sf bar owners alliance, a group of some 300 bars, plans to announce monday whether they'll make this a widespread policy

among their locations. >> if you are vaccinated and want proof on the go, the state has a website where you can download an electronic version of the card that you received when you got your shot. some bars and restaurants are helping point people to the site. the url is there. we have a link on our website. i did it this morning. it's very easy and a nice thing that they have for us. as covid cases surge, two north bay counties are asking residents to be vaccinated before rise in hospitalizations stress their medical system. our abc7 news reporter is part of our vaccine team and spoke to experts about how they may many to boost vaccination numbers. >> reporter: the tale of two highly vaccinated counties. marin and sonoma. both seeing a fast up tick in covid cases. >> we are seeing it is about 85% now of residents infected are infected with delta

variant. >> we started to notice increase approximately two weeks ago. >> reporter: sonoma reporting 1,000 active cases for the first time since march. 22% of the population unvaccinated. that's about 120,000 people. by august 31, there can be 50 people in the hospital with covid and 14 deaths. they say this is preventable. >> we have a mobile health van reaching to patients where some homeless patients are at to be vaccinated. last but not least, in hospitals, we are providing vaccinations at the time of discharge. >> reporter: one of the highest vaccination rates in the state, with more than 85% of the population fully vaccinated, as delta variant takes hold, what they anticipated happened. an unvaccinated resident died, first covid death in two

concord. one person was killed. chp says another person was shot and has moderate injuries. this happened last night around 6:30. after the shooting officers say the victim's black toyota crashed into a guard rail at the top of the port chicago off ramp. a suspect vehicle drove off but officers have not identified a vehicle or potential suspects. witnesses are describing moments they heard gunfire in downtown san rafael. at least two were killed and four others hurt in the shooting. it happened outside a night club on 3rd street friday night. >> i heard gun shots. i saw some flashes from a barrel. >> reporter: he and friends took cover when they saw a man firing a gun in downtown san rafael. >> at least ten bullets in rapid succession. >> reporter: the windows of this hair salon shattered, bullet holes left in concrete

pillars of a parking structure. a 62-year-old man possibly homeless was wounded in the gunfire. >> at first i did think it was gun shots and i heard tires screeching. >> reporter: police say violence unfolded around 10:30 friday night near a night club where a concert was happening. it is unclear what prompted the shooting. >> somewhere in the area there was gunfire exchanged from a high powered automatic rifle. >> reporter: witnesses saw a dodge charger speeding from the scene. police stopped the car on wolf grade and found two 25-year-old men inside with gun shot wounds. one victim from fairfield, the other from pittsburg. the same time, police say two men from stockton were involved in this crash. one was dead and the other wounded. >> when that was going on we got a call that a vehicle had driven up to the hospital, door opened, victim dropped on the ground and victim fled the scene prior to talking to anybody. >> reporter: the victim later

died. officials condemning the gun violence and property damage. >> this is something you don't want in your town. a business here has windows completely shot out in the middle of a busy downtown area. unacceptable. >> reporter: bullet holes hard to miss in the concrete pillar. i got a statement from the san rafael police chief who says his staff is working tirelessly to bring the people who committed these crimes to justice. they're asking for any information the public may have about this crime. this year marks two years since gilroy garlic festival mass shooting. in honor of all the lives impacted, the district attorney's gilroy strong resilience center is hosting week of events focused on kindness. share an act of

you'll say yes for less! welcome back. a convicted serial killer known as the dating game killer died at a hospital. a 77-year-old was on death row since 2010. a jury in orange county convicted him for murders of four women and a girl in the late '70s. investigators linked him to other deaths in four other states and say true victim count will never be known. he was known as dating game killer because he was a contestant in 1978. prison officials say he died yesterday of of natural causes. one of the biggest medical mysteries about covid has been how some patients develop symptoms including fatigue and confusion that can last months. a bay area virologist appears to have discovered the root cause which has led to tter

we are taking a look at the major wildfires in california. dixie fire in butte and plumas is the largest in the state. tamarack fire in southern sierra remains out of control. crews say the tamarack fire is still moving quickly. it's scorched more than 66,000 acres. water drops like this one are part of the assault on the fire burning on the california nevada border. several homes have been lost to the flames and nevada's governor declared state of emergency for one county in the fire's path. a couple prepared to evacuate are members of the fire protection district. >> once we got our own family settled, we would make sure we had our radios and all the things we needed to respond to any medical emergencies or fires in our community. >> video overnight from dixie fire as well, you can see too. meantime with the tamarack fire they hope containment will happen by august 31. dictatesy fire, which is

the largest in california continuing to burn. in you video shows dixie fire destroying homes and threatening thousands of others and businesses most along west shore in plumas county. there are 14 mandatory evacuation zones, more than 190,000 acres have been charred. dixie fire is 21% contained. national weather service says smoke from dixie and tamarack fires is causing unhealthy air quality over much of the sierra this weekend. another sign of how bad the drought is, farmers could be the ones who take the brunt of it. state water resources control board put an order that would keep farmers from tapping into rivers and streams. this would affect sacramento and san joaquin river watersheds. this is not final but the board is set to vote on august 3. obviously concerning for a lot

of farmers, just the drought in general. now this dry lightning that we will potentially see. we have had typical on shore flow locally around the bay area so that's kept the coast really cool. even bay side communities have been on the cool breezy side. inland certainly it's been hot today, temperatures coming down a little bit out of mid and upper 90s, 90 in forest inland valleys. there is a look at the fog over the bay. it extends towards vallejo, richmond, across oakland, emeryville, castro valley as well as hayward. as we look at a wider perspective here is the smoke from the dixie fire and tamarack fire. this whole area from sacramento down through sierra nevada, reno, alpine county, very, very smoky and hazardous conditions that will continue with light winds today. we are adding high and mid level clouds later on as high pressure which is sort of

anchored over four corners region begins to move. as it does, that allows for cloud cover and moisture to head our way with the threat of thunderstorms. this is home wood where it is awfully smoky. look at the air, horrible conditions there and unfortunately in the mountains. 60 oakland, 65 mountain view. it is 63 with sunshine in san jose, upper 50s in morgan hill and pacifica. we contrast that with good air quality for san jose now. temperatures have been in the low 80s, a little shy of that today. upper 60s with a southwest wind of 25 miles an hour by the delta with 66 in concord, livermore 65. you see all the sun here where it's been warm. walnut creek and pleasanton, you have had 90s, a bit of a break today and tomorrow and heat returns on tuesday. we are cooler with high clouds increasing later today. a chance of a thunderstorm, could see rain with that monday

and tuesday and then a summer sizzle for much of the week inland as numbers get hot again. here we are at 1:00 where we've got a lot of sun in the north bay and the east bay. high clouds begin to move up. by the later part of the day we are partly cloudy. monday, another surge of subtropical moisture allowing for the chance of perhaps wetting rains. it's not going to be prolonged and is just an outside chance. with that of course the possibility of some lightning that could spark fires and that of course would be a dire situation here with everything so dry. it's hot but not as hot as yesterday. low 90s in inland valleys. monday looks to be the coolest day with upper 80s, extra cloud cover by tuesday, numbers up by six degrees. wednesday and thursday, we are well over 100 inland. friday it stays hot but this isn't the whole picture. around the bay and at the coast

endorsement in the september recall election. yesterday the party decided that on august 7, gop delegates will vote on which candidate to endorse out of the 24 republicans who have qualified for the ballot. the candidate will require at least 60% of the vote. it is possible there won't be any endorsement if no one hits that number. endorsement would come with helpful campaign cash in the weeks before the recall. california voters last recalled a governor in 2003. we put together an abc7 originals documentary looking at the election. find it on the abc7 bay area app wherever you stream. building a better bay area means focusing on issue of housing. now the idea of quadrupling single family homes is gaining momentum. a san francisco supervisor will reportedly introduce giion esda conversion of any single family home lot into a fourplex. chronical reports two other supervisors are working on similar measures. a san francisco pro housing group is also working on getting a fourplex measure on
