allstate employees and healthcare workers. good evening and thank you for joining us. i am dan ashley. >> you are watching abc7 news live on abc 7. you don't have the choice to go out and drink and drive and put everyone else's life risk. that is the equivalent to the delta virus. >> 41 days after california fully reopen, our covid positivity rate has gone from 0.7 to 5.3%, a figure we haven't seen since early february. the delta variant accounts for 83% of our coronavirus cases. liz peña is in the newsroom. >> reporter: 246,000 californians were directly impacted by this requirement. this move comes as the delta variant is taking hold in

california. the state reported close to 8000 cases per day over the weekend. the delta variant is more powerful than thst year, which why they are seeing fast-moving transmission and an increase in hospitalizations statewide. as covid deaths and infections increase statewide, governor newsomg for state workers and healthcare workers to be vaccinated in the next four weeks. >> 246,000 californians are state employees. 246,000 californians should be vaccinated. >> reporter: 75% of californians have received at least one dose of the vaccine but california is struggling to get the last 25% vaccinated. healthcare workers will need to be vaccinated no later than august 23rd. state workers are being notified and asked to comply by august 2nd. >> we are not stopping with state employees. we are announcing partnerships that include those like kaiser, private sector stepping

organizations representing physicians, dentists. >> reporter: today 65 people died in california from covid- 19. dr. mark ghaly says the delta variant accounting for 83% of all covid cases statewide is their biggest concern, urging them to act fast. >> the delta variant is a different beast. we are at 900 people in hospital with covid. today we are just shy of 3000. >> reporter: california's largest sector union is rejecting the vaccine requirement. they represent 100,000 state employees. >> i absolutely do not believe this is right. i can understand that by trying to get people vaccinated to help the greater good, i respect that however to those who do not want to be vaccinated, this is in violation of your medical privacy.

i stand with those people. for the current governor to do this is wrong. >> reporter: we asked governor newsom. >> what are the consequences of not getting vaccinated? can state employees lose their jobs? >> we have processes and procedures as it relates to workplace roles. this is added into that. >> reporter: i also asked governor newsom if he is considering restating the mask mandate as the rest of the population get vaccinated. he says the state is not planning on implementing a statewide mask mandatey eaven cr urgingesents to s regardless of vaccination status. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc7 news . >> can you talk about some of the exemptions for employees that don't want to get vaccinated? >> reporter: there are two reasons, religious or for health reasons. the employee will need to show proof from their medical provider explaining why they

now you need to get tested once to twice a week depending on their job and exposure. >> thank you so much. meanwhile new york city is requiring employees to get vaccinated weekly testing. they recommend employers require all health care and long-term care workers to get vaccinated. the department of veterans affairs will require frontline healthcare workers to be vaccinated within the next two months. masks are masks are masks anyone working or visiting in county buildings in san mateo even if they are vaccinated. alameda county has already reinstated mandatory masking in some buildings. a major request today from the san francisco bar owners alliance, the group is calling on all bars in the city to require customers show proof of vaccination or a 72 hour negative covid test kit it inside establishments. patrons would be welcomed in

fine and then all of a sudden i cannot even walk. >> reporter: they said they don't want anyone to go through what they did so they want face masks and proof of vaccination for all employees and customers at their store. >> the numbers are rising. people are not telling us or not telling us the truth and we want to make our community, ourselves safe. >> reporter: masks will be required to be worn by all customers in the store, a policy owners say has gotten mixed reviews. >> they will tell people not to come, which doesn't make sense. you don't want to do it because you are upset, but if you are telling us not to tell you what to do, why are you telling other people not to come to our restaurant? >> reporter: just next to the pizza shop, must be thai will not mandate mask requirements unless the state requires it.

>> i am a little worried we will turned down customers. we might lose customers and it will affect my team and my employees as well. >> reporter: customers we spoke with said they support any decision if it makes people stay safe. >> honestly i am okay with it because the only way for this pandemic to ultimately end is it a significant portion of the population get vaccinated. you know, vaccines are readily available in the united states right now so there is no excuse not to get one. >> reporter: despite other bay area businesses requiring a mandate, right now. dustin dorsey, abc7 news . pfizer and modernity are working to get more preteens eligible for the covid shot. both vaccine makers are expanding the size of their children trials from ages 5 to 11. they need to wear masks in schools. >> at the very least, these young kids can transmit the virus so they can bring it home to other family members.

recovering after being attacked by a crocodile while vacationing in mexico. she shared her tale of terror. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a fun getaway before going off to college, but for kiara her vacation became a real-life nightmare when she was attacked and dragged into the ocean by a 12 foot crocodile. >> it came up and i felt

heaviness on my leg. i looked down and i feel like i am being pulled. >> reporter: the 18-year-old now recovering says this happened at the marriott resort where they were staying. sarah laney, a vacation from st. louis, was nearby on the beach and heard what happened. >> before 11:45 and midnight, they started screaming. me and my friends jumped up and ran. >> reporter: they saw kiana battling with the animal. >> i was kid wherever i could. >> reporter: eventually they were able to free kiana from the crocodile's grip and carry her to shore. her mother learned of the attack on facetiming. >> she was crying and asking for help. multiple times she asked for an ambulance. >> reporter: her mother said they demanded thousands of dollars for treatment. in a statement, a six person confirmed crocodile attack and

said the safety and security of our guests and associates are our top priority and we can confirm that appropriate signage as well as night patrolling and red flags are properly in place. kiana and sarah say nobody at the property warned them to be careful. neither had seen the warning sign, which was small, in spanish, and not lit up at night. according to this news report, another woman was attacked on the same beach in 2018. kiana and her mom hope this story serves as a warning to others. a week later, kiana is still here in hospital where she is expected to undergo a second surgery. doctors say she will have a full recovery but it will take time. friends have set up a gofundme account to help with her expenses. liz kreutz, abc7 news . california's largest wildfire has merged with a smaller fire and that is prompting evacuations. the fire has burned 197,000 acres across limits county. new
