will bring you live coverage of this morning's hearing at 9:30 eastern. former california senator barbara boxer is recovering from a violent attack in oakland. the 80-year-old was assaulted and robbed. police say the suspect fled after stealing boxer's phone, a $2,000 reward is now being offered in the case. now to the pandemic and more hospitals in crisis mode because of the delta variant. some experts say we're on track to see 4,000 deaths per day here in the u.s. by october. that's prompting new vaccine mandates across the country. last night, a crowd gathered near the white house lighting candles to remember the 610,000 americans who have lost their lives to the coronavirus. it comes as cases climb in 49 states and the highly contagious delta variant threatens to overwhelm hospitals. according to the cdc every county in arkansas and louisiana has high levels of community transmission and in florida, it's all but one county. >> we are seeing nearly 1,000 new cases in orange county

daily. we are now in crisis mode. >> reporter: a hospital near miami is taking dire steps to accommodate the number of new unvaccinated patients including converting a hospital auteur yum for more bed spaces and allowing only vaccinated visitors. now, new action by new york city. it's requiring city employees including teachers to get vaccinated by mid-september or face weekly testing and a mask mandate. >> this is about keeping people safe. >> reporter: only 43% of new york city's police officers are fully vaccinated. firefighters, 55%. the vaccination requirement is drawing pushback from the firefighters union. >> non-fda approved vaccination is a personal choice and this union will stand against and fight anymandate to vaccine any firefighters against their will. >> reporter: the state is

california is mandating a similar policy requiring vaccines or weekly testing for state employees and health care workers. >> you don't have a choice to go out and drink and drive and put everybody else's lives at risk. that's the equivalent of this moment with the deadliness and efficiency of the delta virus. >> reporter: and president biden announcing the v.a. will become the first federal agency to require vaccines for frontline workers. in the meantime, both pfizer and moderna are reportedly expanding the size of their vaccine trials in kids ages 5 to 11 out of concern the size of the original trials were too small to detect rare side effects. >> in order to better capture the data of these rare incidences then you need an increased sample size for these studies which is why they're expanding the sanchezle size for pfizer and moderna, so it's a precautionary measure. >> meanwhile, the white house is extending international travel restrictions due to the delta variant. lightning could spark more fires in northern california today. the dixie fire, the largest in the state, has now burned 310 square miles and is threatening 10,000 homes. the fires burning across the west are once again creating

golf course while approaching a local airport killing all three people on board. no one on the ground was hurt. no word on the cause of that crash. we turn now to the final day of testimony in the so-called fake uber murder trial. a doctor testified what happened to a south carolina college student the night she got into a car mistaking it for her uber ride. closing arguments get under way today at a murder trial that's shining a spotlight on ride hailing safety. nathaniel rowland is accused of killing samantha josephson in 2019 after the university of south carolina student allegedly got into his car thinking it was her uber ride. on monday one of the prosecution's final witnesses included the pathologist who performed the autopsy on josephson. he says she was stabbed more than 100 times. >> were you able to tell the number of stab wounds as you observed on miss josephson's body?

>> yes, it's over 100, i somewhere around 120. but it gets to a point where it's not really -- it doesn't really add much to the report. >> reporter: prosecutors also showed this surveillance video from the night josephson was abducted from columbia's popular five points district. it shows josephson first trying to get into another car mistaking it for her uber then a chevy impala, which investigators say is rowland's car, is seen circling the area for ten minutes. the impala eventually pulls into a parking spot only feet away from josephson before she gets in. >> miss josephson enters the rear passenger door. >> reporter: a video expert testified that he could not tell if rowland was driving the car at that time. among the evidence presented by prosecutors, josephson's blood and cell phone allegedly found inside rowland's impala, and investigators say rowland's dna was found on the alleged murder weapon. now, rowland chose not to take the stand. he could face life in prison if
