our air-conditioning is going to be rink overtime in the south bay as we hit 91 in morgan hill. the nearby 100-degree temperatures in our inland east bay neighborhoods through the delta and up into the north bay. mid70s to mid60s around the bay and mid60s to near 70 from the coast to san francisco. >> thank you. the delta variant is taking hold across the state. here's some proof of that. california's test positivity rate is now at almost 5%. 5.5% which is the highest since february. the number of people in the hospital now topping 3000. more than 700 of those people are in the icu. even with more than 21 million californians fully vaccinated, that is only 53% of the population. the bay area even though highly vaccinated is not being left out of this. >> look at this chart from our data team. it's been keeping track of the rolling seven day average throughout the pandemic. that modest spike on the right

is thanks largely to unvaccinated cases. >> this morning abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield joining us live in it walnut creek with advice from health experts amid this new mask guidance from the cdc. amy. >> reporter: delta variant and we just aren't doing enough to stop it to slow it down. so now that's why you're hearing talks about mask mandates to try to get those case numbers back down. the recommendation from the federal government is now that everyone wear masks indoors and that includes people who are vaccinated. and as the delta variant gains strength, the concern is what could happen next. >> every time another person gets infected it gives the virus an opportunity to mutate again. we don't know what it could do in the future. we want to get that under control as quickly as possible.

we're going to start with mike. you're talking about a warmup. >> we felt it yesterday in a lot of areas and it'll build. the difference today is we don't have the chances of showers out there. humidity is still going to be high for us. here's a look at the marine layer trying to do its best to bring cooling to areas near the coast we've turned the air- conditioning off so here's a look at the numbers. we'll go coolest to hottest. 66 in half moon bay. 75 to 85 from richmond to redwood city. 87 in san jose to nearly 100 in fairfield. this is day two. more days coming. the delta variant is proving a strong threat to the bay area's progress against the coronavirus. the cdc recommending even the fully vaccinated wear masks indoors in high transmission areas.

>> the bay area falls underneath high or substantially high categories. covid cases and hospitalizations are rising at a pace that's not been seen since the on set of our last surge. >> amy hollyfield live with what a top ucsf doctor is telling us to expect. are you there, amy? >> reporter: he's not ruling out the possibility of a lockdown but says it isn't likely but he's not ruling it out. i'm standing in a county that is considered to have a high level of community transmission for covid. will these stores you see behind me, will the restaurants here, the nail salons be locked down again? we did ask a doctor that very question. here are the numbers that experts are looking at and that are worrying them. our data analysis found there were 231 daily covid cases reporting in the bay area on july the 1st. that figure is five times more. it's around 1300.

during the same time frame we also saw hospitalizations more than double to 495. the last time we saw figures like this was on november 17th. that was during our biggest surge. that's why we're asking the questions we asked the expert about a future possibility of a lockdown. >> sort of depends on what we do and i think that we are catching this early enough and the percentage of vaccinated people is high enough that the hikely hood that we'll see a surge that threatens to overwhelm our hospitals is very low. >> he does think a mask mandate is coming to the bay area even for the vaccinated. he also thinks booster shots will be necessary for some to fight off the delta variant saying the first dose we all got is working well at preventing severe disease against the old virus.

governor newsom and nevada's governor will be working. the fire has burned at least 68,000 acres. it's 59% obtained at this point. firefighters got a break when steady rain brought much needed moisture in the fire zone over the past two days. some evacuation orders have since been lifted. governor newsom is traveling to carson city for this morning's meeting. gusty winds made it difficult for fire crews battling the dixie wildfire. 31 buildings are confirmed to be destroyed but the loss is expected to be greater. fire inspectors haven't been able to survey much of the damage due to the unpredictable fire behavior. the fire has surged to 331 square miles. it is 23% contained. you can see live updates on all
