mandate is coming to the bay area and that you will need a mask at the grocery store again. here are the numbers they are looking at that is making them concerned. we have a map that shows what the abc data team is showing. in the bay area, san francisco, alameda, contra costa and solano counties are read. the level of community transmissions is high. the other counties, the level is substantial. all four red counties that have seen a 30% to 70% increase in covid-19 cases in the last seven days. we asked an epidemiologist what he thinks. >> there is lack of vaccination. the second thing is delta. then we get down to the third things and that is intro transmission. most of that transmission is going on and households but if we are going to go outside, bars and clubs are next on the list. >> if mask mandates happen,

matt haynie announced you can expect a group announcement from help officers all over the bay area. some say mask mandate is more crucial now than ever and could be announced within the week. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. covid-19 cases are having an impact on bay area hospitals. the daily covid-19 counts are the same it was during last summer with hospitalizations also on the rise. john muir hospitals have had to add back more covid-19 rooms. >> we had eight covid-19 patients in the hospital last year and now we are at 43. now with this new surge, we are looking at ppe again and looking at icu metrics. >> there 16 covid-19 patients at san francisco general now , which is a fifth at the winter

hospitalization peak. the chief of emergency medicine say the rate of increasing infections concerns him and said the fourth surge is preventable. the covid-19 surge has thrown a wrench and plans to bring back employees to the office . bay area tech companies are responding is changing. >> reporter: google and facebook requiring vaccinations that is returning to the office. twitter closing their offices in san francisco and new york after they just reopened two weeks ago. major changes as covid-19 cases are again on the rise. >> most of the smart companies are leaving people at home as long as they can. >> those start dates are likely to be pushed back more going forward, with the threat of the delta variant, and most workers not in a rush to give up working from home. as the google and facebook companies require workers to get vaccinated, not a shock to doctors. >> people need to realize

vaccine mandates are nothing new. >> the move to require vaccinations is big, but so far not the most popular one among companies. >> as we have collected company data, less than 10% of companies are currently planning to require employees show proof of vaccination before returning to the workplace. >> experts say with government allowing these requirements, now there's a threat of a different kind of lawsuit. >> somebody gets sick on site or dies on site as a result of the company allowing unvaccinated people on campus, those are lawsuits we will see relatively prevalent before the end of the year. >> brian cropp's chief of research at gardner hr and said we've seen the first cracks in the dam and requiring vaccinations. it is not clear if this move

will impact the market. >> if we see a manufacturer or retailer say they don't require vaccination, that is when we know the mind theft is different. apple will reinstate its mask mandate at most stores today. the mandate applies to staff and shoppers and even people who are vaccinated. apple is encouraged to bring more in. encountering a big problem. they don't have enough teachers. a teacher shortage was a problem before the pandemic but it has gotten worse for many districts. high cost of living and low pay for teachers has made recruitment a major challenge. then came distance learning and social distancing stress. >> last year we saw retirements and resignations from educators choosing a different career path but we've also seen a lot of educators in mount diablo

relocating. >> mount diablo unified will have an in person hiring event this saturday at the district offices from noon until 5:00. next wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. overnight, alaska felt a powerful earthquake. jobina fortson is monitoring that situation. >> tsunami alerts have been canceled including but advisories for the west coast, hawaii and the pacific but the national tsunami warning center said people along the water may see strong and unusual occurrence through the morning. the big quake, 8.2 magnitude, it hit last night. the epicenter was located off alaska's peninsula coast. the shaking was felt across a large part of the state. it triggered a tsunami warming. one resident captured the aftermath as sirens went off. it warned locals to move forward

-- excuse me, to move to high ground. there are no immediate reports of damage but items did fall out of pantries, refrigerators and kitchen cabinets. according to the usgs, the quake had a depth of 20 miles. it was alaska's largest since an eight magnitude hit in 1965. firefighters battling the dixie fire are struggling to stop the flames from moving west. they say the weather at this dry brush are really big challenges. the fire has grown to 343 mi.b2 since it started two weeks ago. 50 structures have been destroyed. this fire is 23% contained. governor newsom is asking the government for more help after seeing the damage from the tamarack fire burning near south lake tahoe. he and the nevada governor visited a burned neighborhood

yesterday. 23 homes have been destroyed and 68,000 acres burned. this fire is 59% contained. >> already we've had 5600 wildfires today. we've had record-breaking years. we are close to four times the acres burned. >> lightning is being blamed for sparking this fire. you can see all of the live updates on the fires burning in california with our wildfire trucker. go to abc7news.com. a lot of people are worried about the smoke and seeing it yesterday but we have been talking about how it will be in the middle and upper parts of the atmosphere. this is the near surface smoke forecast. that is the case again today. most of the near surface smoke is nowhere near us. let's look at the upper atmosphere where you can see it

san francisco mayor sco maya will join community members to take a stand against anti- semitism in the city. mayor breed will be joined by state attorney general rob bonta and other leaders during an appearance at the congregation emanuel. today's event includes a leadership panel to talk about ways to overcome hate. a former executive has agreed to plead guilty in corruption case in city hall. he acknowledges he conspired to bribe the director of public works in an effort to influence him to allow the company to raise collection rates. he will cooperate with the federal investigation. the company will repay customers $95 million. san francisco as district attorney hosted a public summit

from the cdc that suggest people where masks indoors in counties with high transmission. that is 90% of california including the bay area. all local counties except for solano county have mask recommendations in place. these recommendations could soon become mandates if covid- 19 keep spreading. amy hollyfield is live and pleasant event. >> reporter: there signs the mandate could be coming. san francisco mayor is saying she is talking to the city attorney and other health officials about an indoor mask mandate but it sounds like you've got time to relocate your masks if you put them away before heading to the grocery store and being required to wear one. it is something that is being talked about. here are the numbers officials are watching. this is a map to show you what the abc 7 data team is tracking. in the bay area, san francisco,

alameda, contra costa and solano is all red. the level of transmission is considered high. all four have seen a 30% to 70% increase in covid-19 cases. most experts we have talked to think you do still have time before a mask mandate happens. >> we need to recognize there are delays in between the moment when people get infected until they develop severe symptoms that require hospitalization. >> many are predicting it will be within a week but no matter, health officials believe it will be necessary to get ahead of the surge. the bay area is close to having numbers that we haven't seen since february. as of now wearing masks indoors for those vaccinated is recommended. it is not a mandate. amy hollyfield. disney is bringing back its

man's mask mandate at parks. 2 and up will have to mask indoors regardless of vaccination status. president biden is expected to unveil the federal government's plan for a vaccine mandate with 2.1 million workers. the government would become the largest employer to mandate that workers be vaccinated, or required to always wear masks, or undergo a regular covid-19 test. the delta variant is rapidly spreading throughout the united states. jobina fortson is at the live desk. >> the more infectious delta variant is concerning public health officials and that has many people who are already fully vaccinated wondering if it's time for added protection. pfizer thinks it's time. they have released a study that found their vaccines effectiveness dropped from 96%

to 84% of people who were immunized six months ago. the effectiveness rate drops about 6% every two months. the company said it's time for boosters to go into arms but the study has not been peer- reviewed. experts and officials say not so fast. then of the day that they have has indicated it's time to get americans through another round of vaccinations. >> the data is that the vaccine six months out has incredibly terrific protection against severe illness and hospitalization. that was before the delta variant hit. we don't know how well it will do six months out. we need more data. i don't think everybody should be going out and thinking about boosters. >> it is in the near-term booster shots may be recommended for those that are frail or elderly or immunocompromised. he said the data does not show the general population should be getting boosters soon.

if you have been vaccinated, when should you be tested for covid-19? there are two scenarios. if you have had prolonged in close contact with someone who has eddie confirmed covid-19 infection like in the same room with them for more than 15 minutes and closer than 6 feet. if you have developed symptoms that could be covid-19 related. >> really gone, you will have very much symptoms like a cold. runny nose, stuffy nose, tickle in the back of the throat, sore throat. these may progress into fevers and muscle ache. >> is important to get tested to protect people around you. many counties say there are plenty of covid-19 testing appointments available through urgent care clinics and commercial providers. in a south bay, it is get vaccinated or get tested twice

a week. the rule for teachers and staff issued by san jose school districts. we spoke with san jose unified. >> reporter: only weeks away from the return to in person learning, san jose unified school is adding layers to it safety plan, now requiring staff to be vaccinated were tested twice a week. >> we are trying to make sure we have as many layers as possible to ensure students and staff are safe. >> jennifer maddox, public information officer for sjusd , said another layer is required for indoor and outdoor masking. all k-12 grade students mast indoors. >> everybody wearing masks is a very small price to pay to get everybody back on campus. as a teacher, my students have been vaccinated. >> sjusd teacher, kelly walker, throwing her voice behind the policy but she said the testing

requirement seemed tedious. >> it is unified's way of saying without requiring you to get vaccinated, you better get vaccinated. >> 90% of its staff and teachers are already fully vaccinated, leaving 300 who are not or have yet to provide proof. it strengthens safety across the board. some students in the district are in question. >> not everyone has been vaccinated. >> as agencies make decisions, districts tend to follow. changes could be implemented elsewhere. >> the state is asking school districts to balance. we need the kids in person at school but we need to keep covid-19 out of the schools. finding that balance is what we are striving for.

people in public education will hear directly from the state superintendent of public instruction on california plans to walk back students to campus. this will be tony thurman hosting an online session talking about how the state is supporting students. he will address new programs to support public education, including student mental health and wellness courses, outdoor education, and rapid covid-19 tests. today, walgreens is set to close a store in east oakland which has community members upset. walgreens said it has been losing inventory because of theft. it is 81st and international boulevard. neighbors say it will make it difficult for older people who live nearby to get the prescriptions they need. they say the next closest locations are too far away. earlier this month, walgreens a told city council members that it asked for a written decrease but was denied. an extra incentive to get vaccinated. the counter to the county fair. hotel property group hiring
