fog that's compressed near the ground. watch out for a reduction in visibility. you can see some of the smoke off in the distance. not that we need to worry about that, but it does make for that gorgeous sunrise along with some of that monsoon mid and upper level cloudiness. a light breeze. don't expect much in fact way of that low cloudiness to move very far inland. that's why we've got near 90s in the north bay. near 100 in east bay and mid to upper 80s 60s along the coast in san francisco. it's a crucial part of our work to build a better bay area. now california is taking its biggest step towards mandating you put your mask back on inside by recommending that everyone wear a mask indoors even if they're vaccinated. this morning abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is joining us live in pleasant hill with the data and if we might see a mandate in the aritds like it's likely coming and it will

be a change. about half of the people i've seen go into this safeway are not wearing masks. one man without a mask told me he won't mind a mandate saying it's for public health. here are the numbers that have officials worried and that they are watching carefully. we have a map showing you the data that our abc 7 data team is tracking. they're using information from the cdc and in the bay area you will see that san francisco, alameda, contra costa and solado counties are red. that means the level of community tank transmission is high. all four have seen a 30 to 70% increase in covid cases in the last seven days. we asked an epidemiologist what he thinks is driving transmissions. >> first and foremost is lack of vaccination. second thing that's driving it is delta. then we get down to the third things and it's indoor transmission. most of the transmission sin doors. most of that transmission is going on in households. but if we're going to go outside of households i think

bars and clubs are probably next on the list. >> reporter: now if mask mandates do happen, san francisco supervisor says expect a group announcement from health officials all over the bay area. some say a mask mandate is more crucial now than ever and could possibly be announced within the week. as of right now if you're vaccinated, you are recommended to wear a mask indoors. it is not required. live in pleasant hill, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. the covid surge has thrown a wrench rethe office. abc 7 news reporter explains how bay area tech companies are now responding. >> google and facebook now requiring vaccinations for those returning to the office. twitter closing their offices in san francisco and new york after they just reopened two weeks ago. major changes as covid-19 cases are again on the rise. >> most of the smart companies are deciding to leave their people at home as long as they

can. >> tech analyst rob says those start dates are likely to be pushed back even more. most workers not in a rush to give up working from ho begin with. quiring their thousands workers to get vainnot a shock doctors. >> people ne to take step back and realize vaccine mandates are nothing new. >> while the move to e vainionss a g one, so far not the most popular one among companies. >> as we've been collecting data from all the companies we work with, less than 10% of companies are currently planning on requiring that employees show proof of vaccination before returning to the workplace. somewhere but experts we talked with say with the government allowing companies to put these requirements in place, now there is a threat of a different kind of lawsuit. >> somebody gets sick on site or dies on site as a result of the company allowing unvaccinated people on campus,

those are lawsuits we're going to see relatively prevalent i think before the end of the year. >> brian crop is chief of research at gardner hr and says we've seen the first cracks in the dam so to speak in requiring vaccinations. it's unclear if it this move by tech companies will impact the market as a whole. >> if we see a big manufacturing company or big retailer perhaps say they're going to require vaccination, that's when we're going to know that the mind set has shifted. >> j.r. stone, abc 7 news. apple will reinstate its mask mandate at most u.s. stores starting today. this is according to bloomberg. the mandate applies to staff and shoppers, even who are vaccinated. apple is encouraging its employees to get the shop but has not made it a requirement. weeks to go before the first day of the school, many bay area cities some school districts are encountering a big problem. they don't have enough teachers. a teacher shortage was a problem well before the pandemic. the problem only got worse for

destroyed. more than 68,000 acres have been burned and it is 59 percent contained. >> already we've had 5600 wildfires here to date. it's taken about 480,000 acres. put that in perspective, last year, record breaking year. year to date we're close to four times the acres burned. >> lightning is being blamed for sparking this fire. you can see live updates on all the fires that are burning in california with our wildfire tracker. you can find it on our website abc7news.com. mother nature and some of that mid level smoke look at this show. they are putting on this morning from mount tam. that is gorgeous. we said we'd talk about the mid level smoke and that's why you're seeing a little bit of haze in the air. here's the forecast. you can see it's pretty close to us this morning. we were looking right into it for mount tam and as we head into tomorrow morning it's going to be even more so up across the north bay. it's mid and upper level smoke.

of what was supposed to be an epic ten year wedding anniversary vacation. his wife says after a night out she went to bed but snow continued drinking. the father of two later found unresponsive at the resort next door dead. his wife says the story from police investigating the death does not add up. >> so she knew something bad had happened. that is where they told her he'd been found and what they toldit was homicidal without suspects. >> coming up on good morning america, what the family is now demanding from investigators. 17 senate republicans are joining democrats to advance a $1.1 trillion infrastructure bill. that includes $550 billion in new spending, $110 billion for highways. $65billion to expand broadband internet and $73 billion to modernize the electric grid. by one estimate the plan would

create 500,000 new manufacturing jobs by 2024. no set time for the final vote and the bill needs to pass both chambers of congress. we've done a lot of reporting about how the pandemic has changed the job market. how prospective employees have become more selective and how a lot of jobs are isle still open because of a lack of applicants. in the north bay though these people are crushing it. they have been chosen out of 7000 applicants for a final review. murphy goode wines has two open positions and each paid $10,000 a month for a year it includes free housing and a year's supply of wine. now exactly what they're going to be doing at the winery sup to them. >> this is very unique. one of a kind. this is amazing. >> i'm ready to get my hands dirt why i. learn a new craft. i'm ready to move out to wine country. d everybody had to apply for

today. hazy sunshine and seasonal temperatures along the coast into san francisco. mid to upper 60s. a little warmer than average. mid70s to mid80s around the bay and those 90s to 100 inland. that's where it's going to be most dangerously had the hot. >> thank you. california now recommends everyone regardless of vaccination status wear a mask indoors. it follows similar guidance from the why, dc which suggests people wear masks indoors in counties with substantial or high community transmission. that's about 90% of california. all of our local counties have already had mask recommendations in place with the exception of solano county. these recommendations could soon become mandates if covid numbers keep coming up. amy hollyfield live to break down these statistics. amy. >> reporter: yeah, we've been talking to people as they head into this safeway here this morning about half the people aren't wearing masks. one man told me he'd be willing

to put the mask back on because it's for public health. one woman told me she is sick of this, she's not happy about this idea. that's what we're hearing. here is what health officials are seeing. this is a map with the data that our abc 7 news data team has been looking at. this is from the cdc. you'll notice in the bay area we have some red counties. san francisco, alameda, contra costa and solano. that means the level of community transmission in those counties is high. that's why we're hearing about a possible mask mandate coming. all four have seen a 30 to increase in covid increase. they do say you have a little time before this happens. >> we need to recognize there are delays in between the moment when people get infected until they develop severe symptoms that require hospitalization. >> no matter when this happens

health officials believe it will be necessary to get ahead of this surge. the bay area is close to hitting case numbers we haven't seen since february. as of right now wearing masks indoors for those who are vaccinated is recommended. it is not required. reporting live in pleasant hill, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. on that note there is a significant difference in case rates depending on if you are vaccinated or not. statewide the average case rate among unvaccinated californians is 20.7 cases per 1000 people per day. among vaccinated californians that drops to 3.5 cases per 100,000 people per day. disney is bringing back its mask mandate at its u.s. parks starting on friday. cast members and guests 2 and up are going to have to mask indoors regardless of vaccination status. today president biden is expected to unveil the federal government's plan for a vaccine

mandate. with 2.1 million workers the u.s. government would become the largest employer to mandate workers be vaccinated or required to always wear their masks or undergo regular covid- 19 testing. now this is happening as the delta variant is rapidly spreading throughout the united states. jobina is at the live desk with talk now as a booster shot. the more infectious delta variant is concerning public health officials and that has many people who are already vaccinated wondering if it's time for added protection. it's clear pfizer thinks it's time. the company has released a study that found their vaccine's effectiveness dropped from around 96% to 84% in it people who were immunized six months ago. effectiveness rate drops about 6% every two months. the company says it's time for boosters to go into arms. the study has not been peer reviewed. officials say not so fast here. none of the data they have has indicated it's time to get

americans through another round of vaccinations. on good morning america today to talk about booster shots. >> the data is that the vaccine even six months out has incredibly terrific protection against severe illness and hospitalizations and deaths. now that was before the delta variant hit. we don't know how well it's going to do six months out. we need a little more data. rtn everybody should be going t and thinking aboutnear term boo or immuno compromised. he says the data does not show the general population should be getting booster shots any time soon. >> thank you. if you've been vaccinated when should you get tested for covid-19? there are two scenarios for when you'd want to seek out a test. if you've had prolonged and close contact with someone who has a confirmed covid-19 infection so we're talking

a week. that's the rule for teachers and staff at san jose's largest school district. san jose unified school district's first day is weeks away and the district is adding new layers to its covid-19 safety plan. in addition to the vaccine mandate, masks are required for students and staff indoors and outdoors. >> we're trying to make sure that we have as many layers in place as possible to ensure that our students and staff are as safe as we can possibly make them. >> according to the district, more than 90% of its staff and teachers are already fully vaccinated. leaving about 300 who are either not or have yet to provide proof. happening today, people in public education are going to hear directly from the state superintendent of public instruction on california's plans to welcome back staff and students to class. tony thurman is going to host a lunchtime online session to talk about how the state is supporting students during this uncertain time. he'll address new programs to support public education in the coming school year, including student mental health and

willness courses. walgreens is set to close a store in east oakland which has a lot of community members upset. walgreens says it's been losing inventory because of theft at this location on 81st and international boulevard. community members say closing this location is going to make it difficult for older people who live nearby to get their prescriptions filled. the next two closest walgreens locations are too far away for seniors. walgreens had asked for a rent decrease but that was denied. abc 7 news continues to focus on public safety in the bay area. a problem we have followed extensively. illegal dumping on san francisco streets. the city is installing cameras to capture the license plates of those illegally dumping in hard hit bay view district areas. public works staff can review the footage and send illegal
