building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> we are seeing it among physicians, nurses, ancillary staff, we are seeing it across the board. two major san franciscsan fa hospitals are reporting a surgeon breakthrough cases among staff members, many employees have reported mild cold-like symptoms and now a covid vaccine mandate coming to those facilities. good morning everybody it is saturday, july 31, i'm liz kreutz and you are watching abc7 news at 5 am live on abc7 hulu live and where ever you stream. let's start with a look at the weather with lisa arjun. hi everyone, certainly a good deal of missed and drizzle

around the bay as the marine layer is a little deeper, you can see live doppler seven showing you this deck of low clouds into the east bay right now is a mild 60, in oakland and san leandro and going up to the north bay, 54 at santa rosa with fog, gate bridge and it is a little damp out there. you may need wipers in spots but by 9 o'clock we are partly cloudy, 50s and 60s and by noon time we've got cloudy skies giving way to mostly sunny skies at the shoreline. inland we are in the 70s and it's a cooler day, upper 80s to near 90s with a few high clouds and 70s around the bay. today starts the cooling trend inland and we will talk about how long our seasonal weather last when we see you again in a few minutes. this morning new data released from the cdc has local and national officials sounding the alarm. the data shows the delta variant is twice as infectious as previously thought.

the cdc says an outbreak in provincetown massachusetts helped lead to this new recommendation that even fully vaccinated people should be wearing masks indoors and in areas hit hard by covid. in response to the delta variant the fda is shifting around some resources so that it can give pfizer's vaccine for approval. the fda also announced it is expanded emergency authorization for the antibody drug cocktail from regeneron which can be used as a preventative covid treatment for some people. and two are seeing a surge in breakthrough cases among workers, we have team coverage from two numbers of the vaccine team, abc7 news reporter kate larson found out how hundreds of san francisco hospital employees are getting infected with covid. >> reporter: two major san francisco hospitals, san francisco general and ucsf are reporting more than 230 staff members infected with covid, most of them bring two cases. >> more staff are getting covid

then we saw before, and it's mostly vaccinated staff and that's because of the easing of restrictions. >> reporter: dr. lukejohn day the chief that in july more than 50 staff members tested positive for covid, 75 to 80% were fully vaccinated and none of them have been hospitalized. this is out of 7500 total hospital staff. so it's a small portion at how they got covid is important. >> close to 99% of those cases, almost 100% we've been able to trace back to community spread. we have so far not detected any patient to staff or staff to patient transmission right now but we still have some active investigations ongoing. >> reporter: a source tells me that three of the san francisco general cases were emergency staff that gathered at an event outside of work. this month 183 ucsf employees tested positive out of 35,000 people. 84% were fully vaccinated, to

vaccinated people were hospitalized. dr. josh adler is ucsf chief medical officer . >> we were expecting and planning for breakthroughs. but the rate of breakthroughs is a little higher than we had originally predicted. >> reporter: but predictions were based on data from the original variant, not the delta which is twice as infectious but if there is no vaccine available ucsf expects they would have four times as many covid cases right now . sfgh and ucsf caught these cases through screenings, or employees have been reporting mild cold-like symptoms. ucsf expects to enforce a covid vaccine mandate starting september 1. kate larson, abc7 news. and abc7 news reporter and vaccine reporter liz peña continues our coverage, she spoke with a bay area pediatrician who is seeing a spike in office visits

by parents concerned about covid. >> reporter: as the delta variant intensifies across the country, at golden gate pediatrics after lisa dana and her staff are working overtime. >> we are seeing many more children who are concerned and they feel like they might have been exposed. so they want to get they have symptoms. >> reporter: on a daily basis she says about 150 children are coming into her practice. about 25% of them for covid related reasons. >> we did send out many swabs to be tested by pcr and that takes 24 hours for us to get results so we are seeing a few rapid covid positives. >> reporter: we are also seeing this in the southeast portion of the country. this children's hospital near capacity. >> we are seeing children as young as a few days that have covid. up to teenagers. >> reporter: according to the cdc in the last year at least 340 children ages 17 and younger have died from covid- 19. the latest data shows severe disease remains low among children. >> yes, i'm scared i might get it but i'm scared that like my

family is going to get it, too. >> reporter: dr. dana is urging parents to take safety precautions . >> the most important thing is if they are over the age of two they should wear a mask. i think that is really important and i can't stress it enough. >> reporter: 14-year-old amelia strokes and her brother justin, say getting vaccinated is personal. >> i'm worried about his safety but i'm really glad i have the vaccine and that i'm keeping people safe. and you know, i'm keeping myself safe. i just wish he could get vaccinated soon. >> reporter: their dad died from covid in april of last year, their mom is hoping 10- year-old justin can get vaccinated soon. as the pfizer trial for those 5 to 11 years old continues. in san francisco, lose peña, abc7 news. a new indoor mask mandate for much of the bay area is now all but certain. the city is seeing a fourth surge of covid-19 cases, public health officials say it is

largely due to the delta variant, both maryland and breed and health director dr. colfax say an announcement will come next week . >> we are definitely close to a mandate for wearing masks and i know people are being, are tired of being told what to do but that's where we are. >> this surge is faster than the surge we saw in fall or winter. >> dr. colfax says we are here again because not enough people have gotten the vaccine and yet the city's health department says 77% of san franciscans over the age of 12 are fully vaccinated. in the east bay and outbreak of covid-19 is unfolding at contra costa county jails, health officials report 96 inmates and staff members have tested positive across three facilities. the martinez detention facility, -- and west county detention facility. no one has required hospitalization. officials say as of

this week facility staff have to be vaccinated or undergo testing. all inmates have been offered vaccines. happening today with just a few weeks until the start of the school year, children 12 and older can get free school supplies. children can get a backpack filled with supplies at bb memorial cathedral in oakland. kaiser permanente will also be vaccinated those 12 and older today. anyone who gets a vaccine will be eligible for a target gift card. vaccinations are available from 10 am to 3 pm. in the northbay santa rosa community health is holding a youth vaccine clinic there, this will be held at roseland community library from 4 pm to 6 pm. doordash has donated gift cards for this one which will be given to the first 100 kids 12 and up to get vaccinated there today. back in san francisco, when hamilton returns to the -- theater in a few weeks, vaccination proof or negative results will be required for the audience. masks will also be required regardless of vaccination

status. bottle rocket is also requiring vaccinations or a negative covid test when it kicks off in september. masks are recommended there but are not going to be required as of now. visitors to disneyland must wear masks whenever they are indoors which does include some enclosed rides. that brings us to the walt disney company which is now joining the growing number of other american companies that are requiring a covid vaccine for nonunion employees working on site. yesterday disney sent a message to employees who are nonunion based in the united states that they must soon be fully vaccinated to come into the workplace. both vaccinated and unvaccinated workers who are on site now have 60 days to provide verification of vaccines. the company says they are having conversations around

welcome back, surging cases, new masking recommendations and vaccine mandates, we know these changes can feel overwhelming especially when it felt like a few weeks ago we were coming out of the pandemic. abc7 news reporter amanda dulka studio spoke to -- about managing pandemic stress. >> not again, please. >> reporter: the overwhelming sentiment across the south bay friday night, people having to navigate the fourth surge of covid-19 fueled by the more transmissible more infectious delta variant. psychologists are saying as difficult as the last 18 months have been we are better prepared. >> we did the quarantine and we were our masks and we did everything we could to stay away from people 6 feet apart when we were out and about and we did all these things and if you survived it and your loved ones survived it then you know you've got what it takes make this work. >> reporter: but we also know

the toll the pandemic has taken. the deaths, divisiveness, the damage, the mental exhaustion impacts to local community and of course so much more. >> it just hurt so many people and it was so sad to see so many other business owners that i know have to close and what it did to their families. it's really sad. >> reporter: today we are watching cases climb and witnessing mandates. >> i think we are trying to stay hopeful as much as possible and celebrate the good times, there's always the worry in the back of our minds but it's friday night so we are trying to have a good time. >> reporter: san jose resident -- and -- are long-distance friends finally reconnecting, they like many are putting on a brave face even as things appear to be going backwards. but if you're pandemic anxiety has returned psychologist talk to thomas plant says take a deep breath. trust in the health experts. he says understand masking is not such a heavy lift when it means keeping people safe and healthy and lastly he says remember, we are still in a

pandemic. >> of course it's frustrating, of course it's upsetting and disconcerting. we are so done with this virus. but the virus isn't done with us. >> reporter: in san jose i'm amanda dulka's dealio, abc7 news. the spike in cases has volunteers scrambling to convert machines into ventilators. abc7 news reporter david louis shows us what they are doing. >> reporter: bay area volunteers mobilized in may to convert donated cpap machines into ventilators. donors provided 1000 of them which were modified and shipped overseas. they are gearing up again to get ahead of expectations of another way of sweeping across the globe. >> we have to help, it doesn't matter who needs the help, we will send machines and whatever help we can do for the countries. >> reporter: a call is going out for more donated machines.

local volunteers would like to collect 3 to 4000 of them. a team of 10 volunteers can convert 40 machines in a four hour shift changing out hoses and cleaning filters. >> only getting oxygens to ■he patient sometimes is not sufficient so we need to do the oxygen with pressure. these machines help deliver the oxygen with pressure to the patient. >> reporter: negotiations are underway to shift the machines to nepal, indonesia and bangladesh among others. 250 are ready to go. the goal is to get ahead of the next wave so the machines are there when needed to save lives instead of trying to keep up with demand. >> many of them are being used in ambulances because sometimes in rural areas hospitals are 100 miles and people do not make it to the hospital. >> reporter: volunteers come from all walks of life. many are affiliated with bay area and rotary clubs. there are 17 drop off location to donate machines in california, the list is posted on the india covid sos.org

website under equipment donation. david louis, abc7 news. happening today oakland residents can get rid of some of their junk at the bulky block party. the event allows residents to toss out large unwanted items like old furniture, computers and appliances. the block party happens on the last saturday of every month from 9 am to 1 pm. if you live in oakland you can bring your trash to the site on edgewater drive across interstate across interstate 880 from the coliseum. make sure to bring proof of residency like a utility bill. new video from the east bay shows a driver wildly swerving down the streets of oakland. you could see the video here, chp posted it and it was taken from there helicopter on thursday. this weekend oakland police are vowing to crackdown on sideshows. investigators say the people in the car had just left a large group and had actually stopped and the car was taken to be impounded.

new developments, the official search for a missing berkeley man resumes this weekend, -- was last seen when he went running, alameda county sheriff's office workers will be out today and volunteers have also been searching. this is an update from last week, investigators say they turned up no promising clues. california's largest fire is growing at an alarming rate. the dixie fire is now at 376 mi.b2 burning through forest in butte and plumas counties. thousands are evacuated from their homes. cal fire says 65 structures have been destroyed and more than 6000 firefighters are fighting the flames right now. it is just 24% contained. pres. biden says more resources are needed to tackle the western wildfires,

he held a roundtable yesterday with the governors of seven western states including gov. newsom. newsom said it's already a busy season that is putting a strain on the states firefighting effort and pres. biden agreed acknowledging what is happening right now on the fire lines. >> despite the incredible, i'm not being solicitous, the incredible bravery and heroism of our firefighters, resources are already being stretched to keep up. we need more help. >> there are more than 60 wildfires out of control nationwide. this season more than 3.4 million acres have already burned. this is the final weekend for the gilroy garlic festival. organizers faced a tough two years following the mass shooting at the festival in 2019 and then last year it was canceled because of the pandemic. this year is a drive-through format. garlic lovers have to order their favorite items online in advance. there are no walk-up orders accepted. the festival is open from 11 am to 7 pm today and tomorrow. that's still a nice activity and you just drive up and get some garlic fries

>> i always have time for that. we are seeing better weather, it was hot inland the past couple of days and that's where our cooldown will be today. elsewhere it has been pretty cool, we've had the usual seabreeze, the morning low clouds and fog and even some mist and drizzle as we get going this last day of july. the sun comes up at 6:12 am , setting at 8:18 pm just over 14 hours of daylight. you can see the cloud cover over into the east bay so it's kind of filling in the stratus this morning, if if if if view there is moisture down to the arizona california border and also in the mountains where flash flood watches continue throughout the evening hours. pretty impressive for july, some areas picked up nearly an inch of rain from the central sierra to the northern sierra but you can see the highlighted areas here are flash flood watches for this evening. the risk of mudslides and rock falls due to the wildfires here in the burn scar area.

this continues and then the rainfall will begin to really get more widely scattered as we get into, or isolated rather i should say as we get into your sunday. temperatures around cindy -- looking right now at walnut creek with scattered clouds and looking at the fog, mist and drizzle from the coast to the bay early this morning, elsewhere you see clear sky. sunny and cooler inland and seasonal temperatures will take us into the first week of august. we are not looking at any big extremes but we are looking at a more robust clouds, by 11:30 am we still have some fog up in santa rosa and it's pulling back to the coast but we will get that breeze through the afternoon and by 7 pm the fog continues to make its come back, as we go through the early morning hours tomorrow you can see it over in oakland and emeryville, down through parts of the santa cruz mountains and then we've got a

sunny afternoon and those showers becoming more isolated into the mountains your sunday afternoon. if you are headed into the city today , the astros and the giants with temperatures at about 61b0 it will be a cool afternoon and the wind is kicking up to about 20 miles an hour. elsewhere around the bay we are looking at 70 in oakland, 79 in fremont, 82 in san jose and numbers coming out of the upper 90s with about 90 in antioch. right now the breeze is 33 miles an hour out of the southwest or the delta so that indicates some of the cooler air. pretty typical with 60s, 70s and upper 80s to low 90s today, the accuweather seven-day forecast, average for august will take us into the first day of the month with more low clouds and mist and drizzle to start, a sunny breezy afternoon by the coast and by monday and tuesday , that's son will spread , coolest day will be tuesday and nothing too extreme as we warm up the end of next week.

abc7, who live in wherever you stream. as always we start out the half hour with a look at the weather with neurologist lisa arden. good morning everyone, we certainly have a more generous push of marine air this morning, it is breezy out by the delta and we have mist and drizzle around the bay and at the coast. temperatures from the mid to upper 50s for most of you and even a few low 60s in san jose, 61 in livermore with 54 in santa rosa and fog. so by not o'clock we got a lot of sun mainly in the 60s and if you 70s inland. we will have high clouds as temperatures come down from those mid-90s to about 90 in livermore. about 3 o'clock we will see low 80s in the san ramon valley, high clouds and then the fog comes back for tonight. this will lead to another great start but it begins august and that is a look at a new workweek which will feature more seasonal temperatures. i'll have details in a few

minutes. lisa thank you. with the delta variant and breakthrough cases reported some people are wondering if they should get a booster shot before it is approved or recommended. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: as health officials encourage unvaccinated people to get their covid-19 vaccinations, some people already vaccinated are wondering how they can get an additional or booster shot. marin county health officials say they've received lots of requests from individuals wanting a booster. abc7 news special correspondent dr. alok patel . >> there is no evidence right now to suggest that the average person should go out and try to get a booster shot. >> reporter: marin county says it has safeguards in place to prevent someone from getting a self prescribed booster including online registration which is tied to the california immunization registry and id checks. santa clara county also says it has electronic records to look up whether someone has already received the vaccine. cvs pharmacy says there are a

few ways immunizes could identify a patient who is trying to get a self prescribed booster shot. although the ability to detect these situations is limited. ways to identify a vaccinated patient include if the patient is truthful and lets the provider know they are trying to get an additional dose, if the patient uses their insurance to cover the cost while registering to receive an additional dose, and if the previous dose appears in the states immunization information system. walgreens tells abc7 news they also ask patients to verify eligibility and purse cdc guidance covid-19 vaccines are not interchangeable and the safety and efficacy of a mixed product or third dose of the vaccine has not been evaluated. >> people with pre-existing medical conditions or those above the age of 65 may need a booster in the future but i urge the general public to wait for data and if they have specific questions regarding their own situation and their exposure and the underlying medical conditions, talk to their doctor. uc davis has started administering its first pfizer

booster shots, the dean of medicine at uc davis health says they were invited to do the trial because of their uniqueness to other sites. they say they have a more diverse population of participants willing to be in the trial, last year 4000 people signed up, 225 were selected and now 60 are getting the booster shot. >> everybody who is around me, i'm just trying to help them be safe is all, myself and every shot is a dose of hope. >> these people were all in the original trial so they've been followed along the way. this is additional information to say okay now they are here to get there booster. >> uc davis is one of 150 sites across the country doing these trials. royal caribbean is expanded covid testing in u. s. waters, passengers over the age of two including those fully vaccinated must show a negative test before trips of five nights or longer. the policy goes into effect today and this comes as six

royal caribbean passengers tested positive on a seven night cruise, four of them had been vaccinated. more bay area tech companies are delaying office returns into next year due to the delta variant. the chronicle reports that san mateo-based -- is pushing back to january 4 from mid december. san francisco based -- delayed to next february. lyft has delayed to next february, uber employees can return october 25. google and apple are also postponing mandatory returns until october. fears over the delta variant are sending shockwaves throughout the bay area's million dollar wedding industry. many couples had to cancel wedding plans yes, last year and now some are getting cold feet. -- has advice from experts about dealing with the wedding day jitters. >> reporter: how are people feeling out there?

>> nervous. >> reporter: bay area wedding planner -- talking about nervous brides and grooms to be unsure about wedding dates which have been postponed over and over and now may have to be changed yet again due to that wedding crasher. the delta variant. >> there are still a lot of unknowns and people are nervous about the delta asking us to try and move up there events to be sooner when things are open and allowed. >> reporter: the fear is another lockdown but speeding up the big day is tough when there is no venue available to party. >> people are booked out. >> everything is on the table. >> reporter: ian johnstone and his wife samantha got married last summer but postponed the reception to october 2021 when it was safe to gather. now that is uncertain. >> they are making an explicit requirement that everyone be vaccinated just to be safe . >> everyone is anxious and nervous. >> reporter: this wedding planner has clients who want

rapid testing done outside the wedding venue for all guests going to the chapel. >> this is the way that it is. making sure that we are feeling safe and everyone, once alcohol gets involved here, the masks come off. >> reporter: the best advice to avoid the wedding bell blues, be flexible . >> everyone right now need to backup plan, maybe have a backup plan and you need a backup plan to the backup plan. >> reporter: that means possibly moving your date to next year or 2023 if you can or there is always another option planners are offering. even hoping. cornell bernard, abc7 news. the sonoma county fair is back this weekend. if you get vaccinated at the fairgrounds you get a free admission ticket and a free carnival ride, unvaccinated people must wear a mask. fully vaccinated guests do not have to wear a mask outdoors but everyone must wear one indoors. gates open at noon and the fair runs until next sunday.

am this morning. animal lovers across the country are celebrating their mixed breed dogs today. that is because it is national but day. san francisco's mudville senior dog rescue is recognizing this special day, after 19 months it is hosting its first in person adoption event. you can check out 70 adorable dogs aged seven and older waiting for their forever homes. >> i tend to like a little mix in mind because i think, just from my own purview, that they are healthier. but we take in all kinds of dogs, we don't discriminate. >> the dog you see here is named peabody and he is one of several dogs up for adoption. this is all happening today alabama street from 11 am to 2 pm. the event is outdoors and masks are

required. also happening today a famed new york city dessert shop is making a stop in san francisco but it is sold out, , we hate to tell you, milk bar is bringing its decadent suites to a pop up at the ferry building this weekend. those who are lucky enough to snag a reservation will get to take home some of their well- known treats like cookies, cake, troubles, milk bar pie and the cereal milk softserve. god's roadside is hosting the pop up and if you didn't make a reservation they are teaming up to create a compost cookie milkshake that will be on the menu at all of the bay area locations through september. i can tell you after living in new york milk bar is good. happening today watch a movie in san mateo under the stars. coyote point park is hosting a showing of rea and the last dragon, the movie starts around 8:30 pm but family activities begin at 7:30 pm at the science playground curiosity. everything is free including parking. organizers suggest reserving your tickets in advance.
