the board. >> two major san francisco hospitals are reporting a surgeon break the cases among staff members. any employees have reported mild cold-like symptoms and now a covid vaccine mandate could be coming to those facilities. good morning everyone it's saturday, july 31, i'm liz kreutz and you are watching abc7 news at 6 am live here on abc7, hulu live in wherever you stream. thank you for joining us and let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa arjun. good morning, last day of july. >> that's right and very summerlike for the bay area which means we are erasing the heat inland. it's been pretty hot there and pretty typical along the bay and the shoreline. we are going to spread that cooling trend east of the -- tunnel, here is a look at prospect peak in nevada, is that gorgeous or what? just a beautiful shot to start the weekend. it is 61 in mountain view, 60 in palo alto, 58 in san

francisco and this is san jose where it is clear, numbers in the mid-50s from nevada, nobody 02 napa. upper 50s in santa cruz, going for low 70s with a sunny and breezy afternoon. we are looking at clouds clearing and it will be cool to mild at noontime with 70s around the bay and inland and upper 80s to near 90 by mid afternoon inland and we will keep 70s along the bayshore. the coast is going to be awfully cool and gray and we will talk about any changes as we begin august in a few minutes. >> lisa thank you. this morning new data released by the cdc has official sounding the alarm. the data shows the delta variant is twice as infectious as previously thought. the cdc says an outbreak in provincetown massachusetts helped lead to the new recommendation that even fully vaccinated people should wear masks indoors in areas hit hard by covid. in response to the delta variant the fda is shifting its

resources to give vaccine full approval. the fda also announced it is expanding emergency authorization for the antibody drug cocktail from regeneron which can now be used as a preventative covid treatment in some people. to bay area area area seeing a surgeon breakthrough cases among workers, we have team coverage from two members of the vaccine team starting off with abc7 news reporter kate larson who found out how hundreds of san francisco hospital employees are getting infected with covid. >> reporter: two major san francisco hospitals, zuckerberg san francisco general and ucsf are reporting more than 230 staff members infected with covid most of them breakthrough cases. >> more staff are getting covid then we saw before, and it's mostly vaccinated staff and that's because of the easy, easing of restrictions. >> reporter: kevin strickland says that in july more than 50 staff members tested positive

for covid, 75 to 80% were fully vaccinated and none of them have been hospitalized i this is out of 7500 total hospital staff so it's a small portion but how they got covid is important. >> close to 99% of those cases, almost 100% we've been able to trace back to community spread. we have so far not detected any patient to staff or staff to patient transmission right now but we still have some active investigations going on. >> reporter: a source tells me that three of the san francisco general cases were emergency department staff who gathered together at an event outside of work. this month 183 ucsf employees tested positive for covid out of 35,000 people. 84% were fully vaccinated, to vaccinated people were hospitalized. dr. josh adler is ucsf's chief clinical officer. >> we were expecting breakthroughs but that said the rate is a little higher than we had originally predicted.

>> reporter: predictions were based on data from the original variant not the delta which is twice as infectious. but if there is no vaccine available ucsf expects they would have four times the covid cases right now. sfgh and ucsf caught these cases through screenings, more employees have reported mild cold-like symptoms. ucsf will enforce a mandate september 1. kate larson, abc7 news. abc7 news reporter lose pain you continues coverage and she spoke with one pediatrician who is seeing a spike in office visits by parents concerned about covid. >> reporter: as the delta variant intensifies across the country at golden gate pediatrics dr. lisa dana and her staff are working overtime. >> we are seeing many more children who are concerned, they feel like they might have been exposed and they want to get tested.

or they have symptoms. >> reporter: on the daily basis she says about 150 children are coming into her practice, about 25% for covid related reasons. >> we did sound out many swabs to be tested by pcr and that takes 24 hours for us to get results. we are seeing a few rapid covid pops -- >> reporter: this children's hospital is near capacity. >> we are seeing children as young as a few days that have covid, up to teenagers. >> reporter: according to the cdc in the last year at least 340 children ages 17 and younger have died from covid- 19. the latest data shows severe disease remains low among children. >> yeah, i■'m scared hat might get it but i'm scared that like my family is going to get it, too. >> reporter: dr. dana urges parents to take safety precautions . >> the most important thing is if they are over two they should be wearing a mask. i think that's really important and i can't stress that enough.

>> reporter: amelia stokes and her brother justin getting vaccinated is personal. >> i'm just worried about his safety but i'm really glad that i have the vaccine and that i'm keeping people safe. and you know, i'm keeping myself safe. i just wish he could get vaccinated soon. >> reporter: their dad died from covid in april of last year, their mom is hoping 10- year-old justin can get vaccinated soon. as the pfizer trial for those 5 to 11 years old continues. in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. a new indoor mask mandate for san francisco and much of the bay area is now all but certain. the city is seeing a fourth surge of covid-19 cases, public health officials say it's largely due to the delta variant. both mayor london breed and health director dr. greg colfax say an announcement will likely come next week. >> we are definitely close to a mandate of wearing masks and i

know people are tired of being told what to do but the fact is this is where we are . >> this surge is going faster than even the surge we saw in the fall or winter. >> dr. colfax says we are here again because and not people -- outbreak of covid-19 is unfolding at contra costa county jails. health officials report 96 inmates and staff members have tested positive across three facilities. martinez detention facility, marsh creek attention facility and west county detention facility. no one has required hospitalization. officials say as of this week facility staff have to be vaccinated or undergo testing. all inmates have been offered vaccines. happening today with just a few weeks now until the start of the school year, children 12 and older can get free school supplies. children can get a backpack filled with supplies at bb memorial cathedral in oakland. kaiser permanente will also be there vaccinating those 12 and older today.

anyone who gets a vaccine will be eligible for a target gift card. vaccinations are available from 10 am to 3 pm this afternoon. in the northbay santa rosa community health is holding a youth vaccine clinic at the roseland community library from 4 pm to 6 pm. doordash has donated gift cards for them which will be given to the first 100 kids 12 and up to get a vaccination today. when hamilton returns to san francisco's orpheum theater in a few weeks vaccination proof or negative results will be required for audiences. masks will also be required regardless of vaccination status. bottle rock in napa is also requiring vaccinations or a negative covid test, masks are recommended but not required. all visitors to disneyland must wear a mask whenever indoors which includes some enclosed rides. speaking of that the walt disney company is now joining the growing number of other american companies that are requiring a covid-19 vaccine nation for non-union employees

more transmissible more infectious delta variant. psychologists saying as difficult as the last 18 months have been we are better prepared. >> we did the quarantine and we wore our masks and we did everything we could to stay away from people, 6 feet apart we were out and about and we did all these things and if you survived it and your loved ones survived it then you know you've got what it takes to make this work. >> reporter: but we also know the toll the pandemic has taken, the deaths, divisiveness, the damage, the mental exhaustion, impacts to local community and of course so much more. >> it just hurt so many people and was so sad to see so many other business owners that i know have to close and what it did to their families. it's really sad. >> reporter: today we are watching cases kleiman witnessing the return of mask mandates. >> we are trying to stay hopeful as much as possible until the good times, there's always that worry in the back of our minds but it's friday night so we are trying to have

a good time. >> reporter: ashley sanchez and megan potter are long distance friends who finally reconnected and like many we spoke to they are putting on a brave face as things appear to be going backwards. but if you're pandemic anxiety has returned psychologist dr. thomas plant says take a deep breath, trust in the health experts, he says understand masking is not such a heavy lift when it means keeping people safe and healthy. and lastly he says remember, we are still in a pandemic. >> of course it's frustrating, of course it's upsetting and disconcerting, we are so done with this virus but the virus isn't done with us. >> reporter: in san jose i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. the spike in cases has bay area volunteers scrambling to once again convert cpap machines into ventilators. abc7 reporter david louis shows us what they are doing.

>> reporter: bay area volunteers quickly mobilized in made to convert donated cpap machines into ventilators. donors provided 1000 of them which were modified and shipped overseas. they are gearing up again to get ahead of expectations of another way of sweeping across the globe. >> we cannot call ourselves out of the woods, so we have to help. it doesn't matter who needs to help, we will send machines, whatever help we can to other countries. >> reporter: a call is going out for more donated machines, local volunteers would like to collect 3 to 4000 of them. a team of 10 volunteers can convert 40 machines in a four hour shift changing out hoses and cleaning filters. >> only giving oxygen to the patients sometimes is not sufficient for a covid patient so we need to apply oxygen with pressure. these machines know how to deliver oxygen with pressure to the patient. >> reporter: negotiations are underway to ship the machines to nepal, indonesia and

bangladesh among others, 250 are ready to go. the goal is to get ahead of the next wave so machines are there when needed to save lives instead of trying to keep up with demand. >> many of them are being used in ambulances because sometimes in rural areas the hospital is 100 miles and people do not make it to the hospital. >> reporter: volunteers come from all walks of life, many are affiliated with bay area rotary clubs. there are 17 drop off locations to donate unused machines in northern california. the list is posted on the india covid sos.org website under equipment donation. david louis, abc7 news. happening today oakland residents can get rid of some junk at the bulky block party. the event allows residents to toss out large unwanted items like old furniture or computers and appliances, a block party happens on the last saturday of every month from 9 am to 1 pm. keep in mind if you live in oakland you can bring your trash to the site on edgewater drive. it's across the interstate for from the coliseum, just bring

you can see all of that subtropical moisture around the high pressure cell, the monsoonal moisture from arizona to southern california and into the sierra nevada and it has been pretty impressive for the mountains picking up anywhere from 2/10 in yosemite and some places picked up as much as an inch but the threat of debris b flow through the evening continues because the ground is so dry and can't absorb water so it just runs off creating mudslides and rockslides. you will notice from the central sierra through the mojave desert. as we look at clouds here, a beautiful view of walnut creek and the temperatures are mild with low 60s from mountain view and 61 in palo alto, san francisco is at 57 and gorgeous site here as we look at the east bagels

camera. a nice day on the way, not as hot as it's been. the inland valleys have been really hot while around the bay and coast it's been breezy and cool. look at that 67 in vacaville. 57 in novato, cloudy skies here in the city and we've had fog mist and drizzle around the bay and the shoreline. sunny and not as hot inland looking at seasonal temperatures to start august and here is the fog as it pulls back. we still have some clouds up in santa rosa by 11:30 am and they hang out at the coast, it's going to be cool and gray there by 7 o'clock tonight already that push that fog inland. in fact it could reach as far east as the inland valleys. this is sunday morning and by the afternoon once again the fog is not going too far. the showers will lighten up into sunday so you could see a little bit there in the southern sierra and headed into the city perhaps this afternoon for the giants game temperatures will be in the low 60s and breezy and cool. but with sunshine as the astros

concorde, low 70s in oakland and mid 60s with breezy wind in san francisco. the fog comes back in earnest tonight and we start august on a gray and perhaps drizzly note, we will have details for the rest of the weekend and the first week of august coming up. well with the delta variant and breakthrough cases reported some are wondering if they need a booster shot before it is approved or recommended. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: as health officials encourage unvaccinated people to get their covid-19 vaccinations, some people already vaccinated are wondering how they can get an additional or booster shot. marin county health officials say they have received lots of requests from individuals wanting a booster, abc7 news special correspondent dr. alok patel. >> there is no evidence right now to suggest the average person should go out and try to get a booster shot. >> reporter: marin county says it has safeguards in place to prevent someone from getting a self prescribed booster including online registration

which is tied to the california immunization registry and id checks. santa clara county also says has electronic records to look up whether someone has already received the vaccine. cvs pharmacy says there are a few ways immunize her's could identify a patient who is trying to get a self prescribed booster shot, although the ability to detect the situation is limited. ways to identify a vaccinated patient include if the patient is truthful and lets the provider know they are trying to get an additional dose, if the patient uses their insurance to cover the cost while registering to receive an additional dose, and if the previous dose appears in the states immunization information system. walgreens tells abc7 news they also ask patients to verify their eligibility and that her cdc guidance covid-19 vaccines are not interchangeable and the safety and efficacy of a mixed product series or third dose of the vaccine has not been evaluated. >> people with pre-existing conditions or over the age of 65 may need a booster in the future but i urge the general public to wait, wait for data

and if you have specific questions regarding their own situation their exposure and underlying medical conditions that they chat with their doctor. >> reporter: melanie woodrow, abc7 news. this is interesting, uc davis has started administering the first pfizer booster shots, the dean of medicine says they were invited to do the trial because of their uniqueness to other sites. they say they have a more diverse population of participants willing to be in the trial. last year 4000 people signed up, 225 people were selected and now 60 are getting the booster. >> everybody who is around me, i'm just trying to help them be safe is all. myself. and that every shot is a dose of hope >> these people were all in the original trial so they've been followed along the way. so this is additional information to say okay now they are here to get there booster. >> reporter: uc davis is one of 150 sites doing the trials. royal caribbean is expanded

testing requirements in u. s. waters, passengers over the age of two including those who are fully vaccinated west show a negative test before boarding trips of five nights or longer. the policy goes in effect today and it comes as six passengers have tested positive on a seven night cruise. four of them had been vaccinated. more bay area tech companies are delaying office returns into next year because of concerns over the delta variant. the chronicle reports san mateo- based -- is delaying the return to january 4 from mid- september. san francisco-based a sauna delayed return from the fall until next february. lyft also delayed returns to next february, uber employees can return a bit earlier, october 25. google and apple are postponing mandatory returns now until october. fears over the delta variant are sending shockwaves throughout the bay area's million dollar wedding industry. many couples had to cancel wedding plans last year and now

some are getting cold feet again. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has advice from experts about dealing with those wedding day jitters. >> how are people feeling out there? >> nervous. >> reporter: a area wedding planner -- talking about nervous brides and grooms to be, unsure about wedding dates which have been postponed over and over and now may have to be changed yet again due to that wedding crasher the delta variant. >> there is still a lot of unknowns, people are getting nervous about the delta asking us to try to move up there events to be sooner, just when things are open and allowed. >> reporter: the fear is another lockdown but speeding up the big day is tough when there is no venue available to party. >> people are booked out. >> everything is on the table. >> reporter: ian johnstone and his wife samantha got married last summer but postponed the reception until october 2021 when it was safe together. now that is uncertain. >> we are talking about making it an explicit requirement that everyone be vaccinated just to

feel extra safe . >> everyone is anxious and nervous. >> reporter: this wedding planner has clients who want rapid covid testing done outside their wedding venue for all guests. >> this is the way that it is. making sure that we are feeling safe and everyone, once alcohol gets involved here, the masks come off. >> reporter: best advice to avoiding the wedding bill blues? be flexible. >> everyone needs to have a backup plan. they need to have a backup plan and a backup plan to their backup plan. >> reporter: that means being open to keeping the wedding small and moving the date to next year, even 2023 if you can. or there is always another option planners are offering. even open. cornell bernard, abc7 news. the sonoma county fair is back this weekend. if you get vaccinated at the fairgrounds you get a free admission ticket and a free carnival ride. any unvaccinated people must wear a mask. fully vaccinated guests

we've had some pretty nice views this morning and we will show those in a minute but yes, you may have to use your wipers in this loop of satellite imagery showing that we are on the periphery of some of that high cloud-based to the east o■ us and the low clouds from a more dramatic onshore push us throughout the day today in terms of the seabreeze and we widen the view, the showers from southern california around arizona through the sierra nevada where once again the flash flood watch continues throughout the evening hours and they have picked up measurable rain here, it continues today but the risk of debris flows over the burn scar areas for mudslides and rock falls simply because that water cannot be absorbed in that dry soil. so this continues today and and beautiful look from the east bay hills camera, a cooler afternoon at 57 in the in the i 61 in oakland, 62 in mountain view as well as paulo alto and

here is a look at walnut creek, a gorgeous view once again with low 50s and the clouds up in santa rosa. 57 in nevada with 67 by the delta but the southwest wind is up to 35 miles an hour so that is going to allow for a cooldown maybe seven or 8b0 cooler today inland. low 60s and concorde in livermore, mount tan is glorious with a low cloud deck. we have fog and drizzle at the coast around the bay but otherwise it's sunny and cooler inland today and that will trend right on through the first week of august as seasonal temperatures are going to stay with us. marine layer won't go anywhere, it will retreat throughout the midmorning and come back at night providing a seabreeze and the warmest numbers will be in the low 90s today. livermore about 90, a little warmer monday and tuesday with the coolest day wednesday and temperatures rebound thursday and friday. but you notice no extremes here. that's the good news although we are exceptionally dry but we

can count on some average readings. 82 in san jose, warmer to the south in morgan hill at 89 and sunnyvale at about 80, on the peninsula the wind is up to 20 miles an hour in spots with 72 in san bruno. san francisco in the low 60s, up to the north cloverdale gets a better afternoon with 92, 82 sonoma and on the east bay a few high clouds, union city should warm to about 80 today and 90 for antioch so that's a better afternoon for you with 86 in walnut creek. so maybe give the ac a break today. the accuweather seven-day forecast, we have a morning drizzle living way to sunshine with high clouds and then another pretty similar day for your sunday as we start august, looking ahead with temperatures coming up a little bit here and there but nothing too extreme.
