the classroom since the pandemic began. getting can kids vaccinated is important to many parents especially with the delta variant spreading. in oakland today, a vaccine clinic offered shots and school supplies to families. >> i've been bucking them on. >> reporter: a 14-year-old getting ready for seventh grade. she just scored a free backpack after getting vaccinated at this popup clinic. >> i think because i get vaccinated i'll be able to, you know, protect other people around me. since even if i do get covid-19. >> reporter: her mom is a believer. >> trust the science. >> reporter: the vaccination clinic was hosted by bb memorial cathedral and kaiser permanente where doctors are concerned about the rise in the contagious delta variant. >> we're offering the vaccine

today to everyone 12 and older and especially for our children and youth who are ready to go back to school, we really need to get everyone vaccinateed so we can slow the spread. >> rinz is still high. >> reporter: many young people in the community still don't believe in the vaccine. >> i have three young adults, two of them vaccinated. my youngest is not. and i'm working on her every single day. and part of it is is the miss information. >> reporter: 12-year-old della campos admits she was skeptical at first. >> i just it was scary. but i did it. >> she was a little scared. now i think she's happy and excited to go back to school. >> reporter: in a message to parent, the oakland unified school district superintendent said we need everyone 12 years old and older to get vaccinated. >> reporter: for kids who are still too young to get the

vaccine, now more than ever doctors say masks are their best defense. especially as they head back to school. masks will be mandatory in oakland public schools when school resumes august 9th. now the question stands where does california stand with vaccinations? over 21.2 million people are fully vaccinated. about 63% of those who are eligible. another 3.2 million people are partially vaccinated. nearly 68,000 doses are being administered every day. we'll see if that number picks up with the delta variant surge. if you have questions about coronavirus vaccines you can ask the abc seven news vaccine team. head to abc7 news.com/vaccine. the delta variant surge across the country is prompting many cities and officials to

reverse course to stop the spread. it seem to be the reason more unvaccinated people are now stepping up to get their shot. >> reporter: as the delta variant continues to surge across the country, at least 21 states have seen vaccination rates increase. the white house touting the progress saying over the past several days, more than 700,000 shots a day have been administered. about three million people receiving their first shot in the past week. the fda saying it's working as fast as possible to finish its review of the pfizer vaccine to give it full approval. something some unvaccinated americans say they're waiting for. on friday the country reporting the highest number of new cases since early february. nearly 86,000. leading to an alarming number of hospitalizations, 25,000 more than just one month ago in austin texas. a city with more than 2.3 million people. there are just nine icu beds left. >> we're certainly seeing in l o the

masks indoors. eviction protection for renters across the nation ends today. those in california are still protected with a state eviction moratorium running through september 30th. wain yesterday failed to pass a bill. supporters of the moratorium slept on the capitol steps last night, including congresswoman cory bush. >> we're not just gonna let this go quietly. >> the university's eviction lab said the moratorium is credited with keeping two million people in their homes over the past year. housing activists showed their support for extending eviction protections by protesting today outside speaker nancy pelosi's san francisco home. they placed a symbolic eviction notice on tth want peln congress to allow a vote on the

extension of the moratorium. congress is currently adjourned for a month for summer vacation. in the east bay the official search for a missing berkeley man resumed today. phillip was last seen three weeks ago when he left home to go running at the regional park. 115 volunteers from 17 different bay area agencies returned to the park today to once again search remote trails and creek beds. 120 volunteers were also there. his wife says she is thankful for the community's response. >> it's an incredibly lonely journey. but the support we have is so much. >> today's search turned up no

new clues. a tip line is still open. overturned this morning blocking multiple lanes on southbound 880 in hayward. you can see there appears to be an amazon truck there. the accident caused a huge traffic jam. it took a couple hours for crews to get that truck upright. no one was hurt. the state's largest wildfire, the dixie fire, has forced at least 16,500 people from their homes. it's burned 376 square miles and just 24% contained. the fire in butte and pumas county continues to move west. they do expect fire activity to increase today because of dry weather conditions and low humidity. cal fire has stopped forward progress on a fire that created a headache for drivers in livermore this afternoon. cal fire said the fire grew to 30

could become tough to get it in california beginning next year. that's when the state begins enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved by voters in 2018. the law allows more states for breeding pigs, chickens and calves. unless the courts intervene or the state allows noncompliant meat to be sold, california will lose most of its pork supply. that in turn could push prices up by 60%. and create shortages for restaurants and grocery stores. just ahead, we need the rain. but this is definitely not what we want to see. the famous california tourist spot that got swamped by a monsoon. and there could be more wet weather on the way. >> and back here at home, it's certainly a cooler start to the weekend. we'll take a look at how the second half will fair

precipitation, it's not really common to see this type of weather here. but good to see there. >> part of the problem is our ground is so dry, that when we have these downpours develop, the ground cannot soak in this moisture quick enough. but that will happen very quickly. and that flash flood warning will continue into monday. showing you that fog band along the coastline. tonight our marine layer deepens even more. and that means more cloud cover for more of us overnight tonight. here are those thunderstorm tours. love doppler seven tracking them. they do come with lightning as well. over the last 30 minutes, live doppler seven estimating about 37 lightning strikes and we will have a repeat performance from mother nature tomorrow with more storms. before that, a flash flood watch is in effect from basically lake tahoe to areas south and east.

we have these downpours that could develop. a lot of rain in a short amount of time. and that can create localized flooding where those downpours develop. back here at home, it's all about cooler weather to start out the weekend. some spots nearly eight to ten degrees cooler right compared to this time yesterday. 62 in the city, 67 oakland. overnight tonight, we'll watch that fog. our marine deepens. and the marine lay serat about 2,000 feet. that means cloud cover is gonna push well inland overnight tonight. most of us will settle in the mid to upper 50s. even a chance of some coastal drizzle. hour-by-hour by go, first thing tomorrow morning. gray skies to start out the first day of august. fog up is coming in appropriately. we will get some sunshine. and tomorrow is almost a carbon copy forecast when it
