us. i'm dion lynn. you're watching abc 7 news at 6:00 live here on abc 7, hulu live and wherever you happen to stream. the back-to-school countdown is on across the bay area. and for many student, it's the first time they've set foot in a classroom since the pandemic began. getting kids vaccinated is important to many variants especially with the delta variant spreading in. oakland today, the vaccine clinic offered shots and free school supplies to families. cornell bernard was there. >> i've been actually bugging my mom to let me do it. >> reporter: she just scored a free backpack, a's tickets and a target gift card after getting vaccinated at this popup clinic. but she didn't come for the free snag. swag. >> i think because i get vaccinated, i'll be able to protect other people around me. even if i do get covid-19.

>> reporter: her mom is a believer. >> trust the science. >> reporter: doctors are concerned about the rise in the delta variant. >> especially for our children and our youth who are ready to go back to school. we really need to get everyone vaccinated so that we can slow the spread. >> resistance is still high. >> reporter: many young people in the community still don't believe in the vaccine. including members of his own family. >> i have three young adults. two of them vaccinated. my youngest is not. and i'm working on her every single day. and part of it is the miss information. >> reporter: 12-year-old daniella campos admits she was skeptical. >> i really didn't want to do it. i just it was scary. but i did it. >> she was a little scared. now i think she's happy and excited

to get back to school. >> reporter: in a message to parents, the oakland unified school district superintendent said we need every oaklander at least 12 years old to get vaccinated and younger children to do so once they become eligible. now more than ever doctors say masks are their best defense as they head back to school. masks will be mandatory in oakland public schools when in-person learning resumes august ninth. over 21.2 million people are fully vaccinated. about 63% of those who are eligible. another 3.2 million people are partially vaccinated. nearly 68,000 doses are being administered every day. and if you have questions

about coronavirus vaccines, you can always ask the abc 7 new vaccine team. abc sevennews.com/vaccine. the delta variant surge across the country is prompting many states, cities and officials to reverse course to stop the spread. it seems to be the reason more unvaccinated people are now stepping up to get their shot. >> reporter: as the delta variant continues to surge across the country, at least 21 states have seen vaccination rates increase. the white house touting the progress saying over the past several days, more than 700,000 shots a day have been administered. about three million people receiving their first shot in the past week. the fda says it's working as fast as possible to finish its review of the pfizer vaccine to give it full approval. something some unvaccinated americans say they're waiting for on. friday, the country reporting the highest number of new cases since early february. more than 86,000.

leading to an alarming number of hospitalizations. 25,000 more than just one month ago. in austin texas, the city with more than 2.3 million people, there are just nine icu beds left. >> we're doing our best we're certainly seeing shortages in every level of the hospital. >> reporter: in response, mask mandates are starting to return. >> can americans expect more guidelines and restrictions due to covid? >> in all probability. >> reporter: the cdc's decision to tighten mask recommendations for the vaccinated stems from an outbreak in province town, massachusetts, where about 75% of more than 900 people tested positive were fully vaccinated. >> reporter: new orleans reinstating its mask mandate. >> we have been here before. we've seen the movie over again. and what was once unpreventable

today is preventible. >> reporter: and in lalpalooza music festival, guests are new required to wear masks indoors. eviction protection for renters across the nation ends today. renters in california are still protected with a state eviction moratorium running through september 30th. washington has lawmakers thursday failing to pass a bill. supporters of the moratorium slept on the capitol steps last night, including congresswoman corey bush. >> we're not just gonna go blindly when the live was actual people who we're supposed to represent, actual whole people, human beings actually are at risk. >> the university's eviction lab says the moratorium is credited with keeping two million people

in their homes over the past year. housing activists showed their support for extending eviction protection by protesting today outside speaker nancy pelosi's san francisco home. they posted a symbolic eviction notice on the house. they want pelosi to reopen congress to allow a vote on the extension of the moratorium. congress is currently adjourned for a month for summer vacation. to the east bay. the official search for a missing berkeley man resumed today, last seen three weeks ago today when he left home to go running. 115 volunteers from 17 different bay area agencies returned tohe park tayo onceeah for low trails and kree >> it's an incredibly lonely

san francisco ans came out in full force today for a rally supporting the asian-american community. the event is organized by the group, asians are strong. its founder anti-asian hate crimes have tripled in some cities in the first half of the year. the group is now pushing for change and calling on san francisco's leaders to step up.

>> right now i see a lot of people from our leadership pointing fingers. and are not taking ownership. that's not leadership. leadership takes ownership of the problem. rather who's wrong or right. >> supporters at the rally held up songs saying "asians are strong" and "be brave together" to show solidarity with the community. it's national mutt day. and dog lovers across the country are celebrating the mixed breed pets today. san francisco's muttville senior dog rescue recognized the special day with its first in-person adoption event after 19 months. some 70 dogs ages seven and older at the center on alabama street were looking for their furever homes. you can still donate to muttville for things like food, toys and medicine. if you're a bacon lover, it

see a fair amount of sunshine even along the coastline. between 1:00 and 4:00 pm tomorrow. we should be able to squeak in a few peeks of sunshine here and there. highs tomorrow, near average. essentially a carbon copy forecast compared to today. 65 in san francisco. 69 in oakland. 80 in san jose. the same in santa rosa. 87 in concord. our warmest spots touching about 90 degrees, antioch and livermore. a bit of a warming trend through tuesday. we'll take a dip on wednesday. that's the coolest day of the week before another warming trend gets underway for thursday and friday. the newest giant, chris bryant, was unable to get from washington dc to san francisco in time for tonight's game. he is expected to be in the lineup for tomorrow's series finale in san francisco. this was one to remember for the youngster.
