the pandemic and its impact is something we are focused on as we work to build a better bay area. luz pena spoke to medical professionals from san francisco, detroit, and denver about their staffing challenges >>eporte after more than a year the pandemic, hospitals are noticing a concerning trend. the medical staff is burned out. >> vacation -- >> reporter: you haven't had a vacation in over year? >> maybe two days. >> reporter: with multiple hours of overtime a week. no sleep and no end in sight as we approach a fourth surge. this is taking a toll on this bay area nurse. >> i don't know how to be sick or die. have a heart attack working a lot of time. i have four hours of sleep. it's been three days.

>> reporter:atn frgeneral hospit career. >> i'm even more worried about the situations where nobody will come in. as you know, we can only open beds when we have nurses to staff them. emergency department, we need a nurse for every three beds. when nurses can't come to work, we have to shut down beds. >> reporter: in the past four to six weeks, the doctor is reporting an increase of 50% to 60% in ambulance diversion meaning patients who would normally come here are being redirected to other hospitals nearby. a trend his colleagues in denver and detroiter challenge with. talk to me about what's happening in denver. >> we have empty beds, but we can't get enough staff to safely take care of patients. >> reporter: in detroit, they are experiencing long waits for

hospital beds. some of the nurses left the emergency department. >> there are a lot of opportunities for nurses in outpatient settings in homecare. >> reporter: the doctor is concerned. nurses left now in th emergency room are reaching their breaking point. do you think your medical staff is reaching that limit? >> i think we are closer than we ever have been before. in the era of vaccines where this is preventable. what we are seeing now is preventable. we need to give the medical community a chance to take a deep breath. where does california stand with vaccinations? over 21.2 million people are fully vaccinated. that's about 63% of those eligible. another 3.2 million people are partially vaccinated. here's a number we are closely watching. nearly 68,000 doses are being administered every day.

we will see if that picks up the delta variant surge. the back to school countdown is on across the bay area for kids getting back to in-person learning. many parents are trying to get the kids vaccinated before the first day of class. in oakland, a vaccine clinic offered shots and free school supplies. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard was there. >> i have been kind of bugging my mom to let me do it. i want to go back to school and see my friends. >> reporter: this 12-year-old from oakland is getting ready for seventh grade. she just got a free backpack, tickets, and a target gift card after getting vaccinated at this pop-up clinic. she didn't come for the free swag. >> i think because i get vaccinated, i will be able to protect other people around me. even if i get covid-19. >> reporter: her mom is a believer. >> trust the science. >> reporter: the clinic was hosted by memorial cathedral and

kaiser permanente where doctors are concerned about the rest of the delta variant, especially in underserved communities. >> we are offering to everyone 12 and older especially children and youth who were ready to go back to school. we need to get everyone vaccinated so we can slow the spread. >> resistance is still high. >> reporter: the pastor said many young people still don't believe in the vaccine including members of his own family. >> i have three young adults, two vaccinated. my youngest is not, and i work on her every single day. part of it is the misinformation. >> reporter: the 12-year-old admits she was skeptical at first. >> i really didn't want to do it. i felt it was scary. but i did it. >> she was a little scared. now, i think she is happy and excited to go back to school. >> reporter: in a message to parents, the oakland unified superintendent said we need every oakland or at least 12

years old to get vaccinated, and younger children to do so once they become eligible. it will protect our country. it will protect our city, and it will protect our skills schools. for kids too young, doctors say masks are their best defense. especially as they head back to school. masks will be mandatory in oakland public schools when in- person learning resumes august 9. the nhl says it is launching an investigation into san jose sharks player evander kane after his wife accused him of betting on games. she posted a question on social media addressed to the nhl commissioner, she wrote quote can someone ask gary bettman how they can let a player gamble on his own games? it and win with cookies on his own games? the league isn't commenting on the accusations. the sharks put out a statement saying the team is been in contact with the nhl and

supports the investigation. evander kane hasn't commented. he was sued in 2019 by 20 las vegas casino over a debt. san francisco police are asking for the public's help after shooting that killed a teenager. this happen friday night on bertha lane. there were two victims. a 16-year-old girl who died at the hospital and a 45-year-old woman who survived. police are hoping the public can help them with a lead. >> any information someone has that they think might help, surveillance, photos, vocals, conversations, anything they think might help, please get in touch with us because it's important we catch the person who did this and bring the family justice. >> sfpd hasn't said what the relationship was between the two victims. they haven't said what led up to the shooting or whether they know the motive. starting tomorrow, vta will begin running bus bridges in light of light rail service. buses will operate in downtown san jose to be point station,

volunteers continue their search for a missing runner philip kreycik. police are continuing their investigation. he was last seen three weeks ago when he left home to go running in pleasanton ridge regional park. abc7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains how the family continues to hold out hope. >> reporter: across the city pleasanton, you can't help but

see the face of the missy birthday runner, philip kreycik. volunteers are searching and expanding coverage area. that someone will see a face and have information. even after three weeks of constant work, his wife, two's, and parents are still waiting for that breakthrough. >> we are hopeful. we are hopeful that things will turn around. >> we miss our son so incredibly. he is a delightful person. he has such spirit, such love. it emanates from him. he is a hole that we need to have back. >> reporter: pleasanton police pulled gps data from search crews over the past three weeks and found new locations they hadn't checked. saturday morning, crews from agencies in more than 100 volunteers hit the trails again to come through the new area. they still found nothing.

they never arrived. family members say her car was found parked near the relative's home. they told police she may have left with her ex-boyfriend, anyone with information is asked to call beaumont police. eviction protection for renters across the nation ended this weekend. cori bush and alexandra corey tessier perez held a rally to protest the end of the moratorium. bush had been unhoused and evicted before she joined congress. tenants in california are protected with the state eviction moratorium running through september 30. friday, in washington, house lawmakers failed to pass a bill. tenant could be evicted as soon as today. supporters of the moratorium slept on the capitol steps. >> we would like to see more
