i'm liz kreutz. let's start with a quick look at the weather with lisa argen. here's a look at live doppler 7. fog in the north bay, along the peninsula, and over the bay. it's a taller deck so we aren't looking at mist and drizzle. 57, downtown. 60, oakland. 56, pacifica. camera, a pretty view. 56, santa rosa as well as napa. upper 50s and sunshine toward concord, livermore, and a mild 61 in vacaville. san rafael, mostly cloudy skies. mix of clouds and sun. we will break out into sunshine today. the winds k-cup the sea breeze 30 miles per hour, mid-60s downtown. upper 60s, oakland. the fog comes back. it will be the pattern as we get into august.

i will explain in a few minutes. nurses in the bay area and across the country are at their wits end is covid cases continue to spite, hospitals are reporting a nurse staffing shortage because of the rough past year. the pandemic and the impact on the health care system is something we are focused on two the better bay area. abc7 news reporter luz pena spoke with medical professionals from san francisco, detroit , and denver about staffing challenges as they fear a fourth covid surge. >> reporter: after over year the pandemic, hospitals across the country are noticing a trend. the medical staff is burned out. >> vacation -- >> reporter: you haven't had a vacation in over a year? >> maybe two days. no more than three days. >> reporter: with multiple hours of overtime a week. no sleeper no end in sight as we approach a fourth surge. this is taking a toll on the bay area nurse.

>> i don't know how i am going o to, have a heart attack, working a lot of time. i have four hours of sleep. it has been three days. >> reporter: is san francisco general hospital, dr. caldwell, chief of emergency medicine reporting the biggest nurse staffing shortage of his career. >> i'm worried about situations where nobody will come in. as you know, we can only open up beds when we have nurses to staff them and we can only, and the emergency department, we need a nurse for every three beds. when nurses can come to work, we have to shut down beds. >> reporter: in the past four to six weeks the doctor is reporting an increase of 50% to 60% in ambulance diversion meaning patients who would normally come to sf general are being redirected to other hospitals nearby. a trend this colleagues in denver and detroit are challenged with.

>> reporter: talk to me about what's happening in denver? >> we have empty beds, but we can't get enough staff to safely take care patients. >> reporter: in detroit, the doctor says they are experiencing long waits for hospital beds. some of the nurses left the emergency department. >> there are a lot of opportunities for nurses in home care, public health. >> reporter: the doctor is concerned the nurses who are left in the emergency room are reaching their breaking point. do you think medical staff is reaching that limit? >> i think we are closer than we ever have been before in the area of vaccines for this is preventable. what we are seeing now is preventable. we need to get the medical community a chance to take a deep breath. where does california stand with vaccinations? over 21.2 million people are

fully vaccinated. 63% of those who are eligible. 3.2 million people are partially vaccinated. here's a number we are watching. nearly 68,000 doses are being administered every day. we will see if that picks up with a delta variant surge. back to school countdown is on across the bay area forgets getting back to in-person learning. many parents are trying to get the kids vaccinated before the first day of school. in oakland this weekend, vaccine clinic offered shots and free school supplies. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard was there. >> i have been kind of bugging my mom to let me do it. i want to go back to school and see my friends. >> reporter: this 12-year-old is getting ready for seventh grade. she scored a free backpack, tickets, and a target gift card after getting vaccinated at this pop-up clinic. she didn't come for the free swag. >> i get vaccinated, and i will

be able to protect other people around me. even if i get covid-19. >> reporter: her mom is a believer. >> trust the science. >> reporter: the clinic was hosted by bb memorial in kaiser permanente where where concerned about the rise of the contagious delta variant. specially in underserved communities. >> we are offering the vaccine to 12 and older and children and youth who are ready to go back to school. we need to get everyone vaccinated so we can slow the spread. >> resistances still high. >> reporter: the pastor said many young people still don't believe in the vaccine including members of his own family. >> i have three young adults. two vaccinated. my youngest is not, and i work on her every single day. part of it is the misinformation. >> reporter: this 12-year-old admits she was skeptical at first. >> i really didn't want to do it. i felt it was scary. i did it. >> she was a little scared.

now i think she is happy and excited to go back to school. >> reporter: in a message tapirs, the oakland unified superintendent said we need every oakland or at least 12 and older to get vaccinated, and younger children to do so once they become eligible. it will protect our country, will protect our city, and it will protect our schools. for kids too young to get the vaccine, doctors say masks are the best defense. especially as they head back to school. masks be mandatory in oakland public schools when in-person learning resumes august 9. the national hockey league says it's launching an investigation into san jose sharks player evander kane after his wife accused him of betting on games. she posted a question in social media addressed to the nhl commissioner. she wrote quote can someone ask bettman how they can let the player gamble on his own games? that and win with bookies on

his own games? the league isn't commenting.ark casino over $500,000 debt. n'tcs san francisco police are asking for help after shooting that killed a teenager. it happened friday night on bertha lane in bayview. there were two victims, 16-year- old girl who died at the hospital, and a 45-year-old woman who survived. police are hoping the public can help with a lead. >> any information somebody has to think that might help. surveillance, photos, phone calls, anything that they think might help, please get in touch with us. it is important we capture the person who did this and bring the family justice. >> sfpd hasn't said what the relationship was between the two victims. they haven't said what led to the shooting or whether they know the motive. starting tomorrow, the vta will run bus bridges.

volunteers will continue their search for missing runner philip kreycik. police are continuing their investigation. was last seen three weeks ago when he left home to go running in pleasanton ridge regional park. abc7 news reporter dustin dorsey explain to the family continues to hold out hope. >> reporter: across the city of pleasanton, you can help us see the face of missing berkeley runner philip kreycik. volunteers are still searching and expanding the coverage area of posters dublin, fremont, castro valley, hoping someone will see the face and have information. even after three weeks of constant work, his wife, two's, and parents are still waiting for that breakthrough. >> we are hopeful.

case something does happen. we have to make sure we can make something out of nothing. >> reporter: after a long hiatus, the tsa is holding the special training classes. we have seen incidents recently flight attendants getting attacked and passengers fighting. there are more threats than ever for airline workers. >> it is a mindset. that is to expand their awareness, situational awareness. expect the unexpected. >> reporter: there's a simulator, full-sized model of an airplane where agents can prepare for any challenge. it's a one-on-one confrontation with an attack are and they have to react quickly. >> i am still jittery from this situation. although i wasn't in it, it was an adrenaline rush. it can happen. >> reporter: for them, could be a life or death scenario. >> we want them to walk away with confidence that they win that fight. >> reporter: these employees hope they never have to use the training, but they know they

are ready to keep everyone safe. >> at least they are having the training. it's unfortunate they needed. >> reporter: san franciscans came out in full force for a rally to support the asian community. lots of people packed the front lawn of city hall yesterday. it was organized by the group asians are strong and the founder said anti-asian hate crimes have tripled in some cities in the first half of the year. the group is pushing for change and calling on san francisco leaders to step up. >> right now, i see a lot of people from our leadership pointing fingers and they aren't taking ownership. that is not leadership. leadership takes ownership of the problem weather who was wrong or right. >> supporters held up signs saying asians are strong and be brave together solidarity with the community. a flower shop is teaming up with outlet malls and volunteers from san francisco psion church to say thank you to teachers.
