building a better bay area. moving forward. finding solutions. this is abc7 news. hospitals across the country are reporting a nurse staffing shortage. one bay area nurse says the surge in covid-19 is taking a toll. good morning. august 1. this is abc7 ne at00 let's look at the weather. >> all summer long we've had fog and starting august, no different. it is a great start for many. the fog just reaches across the

bayshore and is clear inland and extends to the south. we are looking at a great start from the roof camera where the winds are light and it is 58 downtown, 65 mountain view and 61 palo alto. the sun is shining. east bay valleys have had numbers comfortable. though 60s now in the north bay with mid 60s in the inland east bay. there is looking for cool mild midday timeframe. even some sunshine temporarily at the beach but we will slow to the mid 60s. 90 inland with 70 along the bayshore. it should be seasonal but that's not the whole story. a warm up for the week ahead coming up. nurses in the bay area and across the country are at their wits end as covid-19 cases spike. hospitalreporting a nurse staffing shortage because of the raft past year. the pandemic and its impact is something we are focused on as a work to build a better bay

area. luz pena spoke to professionals about their staffing challenges. >> reporter: after over a year at the pandemic, hospitals across the country at noticing a trend. the medical staff is burned out. >> they have been without vacation. since the start of the pandemic. >> you haven't had a vacation in over a year. >> maybe two days. >> with multiple hours of overtime a week and no sleep and no end in sight. we approach a fourth surge. all of this is taking a toll on bay area nurses. >> i don't know how i am going to be sick or die if i get a heart attack working a lot of time. right now i only have four hours. >> at zuckerberg san francisco general, dr. caldwell, chief of

medicine, is reporting a shortage of nurses. >> i'm worried about the situations where nobody will come in. as you know, we can only open up that's when we have nurses to staff them. and we can only -- in the er, we need a nurse for every three beds. when nurses can come to work we have to shut down beds. >> in the past six weeks, dr. caldwell is reporting an increase of 60% an ambulance returns. meaning people are being redirected to other hospitals nearby. he call others this. >> what is happening in denver? >> we have empty beds but we can't get enough staff to safely take care of patients. >> in detroit, they are experiencing long waits for hospital beds. some of the nurses left the

emergency department. >> there are a lot of opportunities for nurses in outpatient settings and homecare and in public health. >> dr. caldwell is concerned that nurses who are left now in the er are reaching their breaking point. >> do you think your medical staff is reaching that limit? >> we are closer than we ever happen. this is the era of vaccines where this is preventable. the what we are seeing now is preventable. we need to get the medical community a chance to take a deep breath. >> in san francisco. luz pena. >> where does california stand with vaccinations? 20 1.2m and people are fully vaccinated. that is 63% of those who are eligible. 3.2 million are partially vaccinated. here is a number we are watching. nearly 68,000 doses are being administered every day. we will see if that picks up with a

delta variant surge. back-to-school countdown is on across the bay area for kids getting back to in person learning. many parents are trying to get their kids vaccinated before the first day of class. in oakland, a vaccine clinic offered shots and free school supplies. >> i have been bugging my my my to let me do it because i want to go back to school and see my friends. >> 12-year-old 89 is getting ready for seventh grade. >> reporter: she scored a free backpack it and a target gift card after getting vaccinated at this papa clinic. she didn't come for the free swag. >> i think because i get vaccinated i will be able to protect other people around me. even if i do get covid-19 . >> her mom aeliever. >> trust the science. >> the clinic was hosted by bb memorial cathedral and kaiser were doctors are concerned about the rise of the contagious delta variant in

it will protect our country and city and our schools. for kids who are too young to get the vaccine, now more than ever, doctors say masks are there best defense, especially as they go back to school. masks will be mandatory in oakland public schools when in person learning resumes august 9. cornell bernard. national hockey league is launching an investigation into san jose sharks player evander kane after his wife accused him of betting on games. anna kane posted a question on social media writing, can someone ask nhl commissioner gary bettman how they can let a player gamble on his own games. that and win with bookies on his own games. the league is not commenting. the sharks put out a statement saying the team has been in contact with the nhl and supports the investigation. kane was sued in 2019 by casino over a $500,000 debt. new this morning, kane posted a statement on twitter

pandemic. sfmta staff did inspections and training. cable car service will return. in the south bay, today is garlic festival. another sellout yesterday for the drive-through event. organizers have faced a tough few years following a mass shooting and then the pandemic. this year, a new version of that event returns. garlic levels have to order online in advance. today, a group of bay area firefighters will begin their 3800 mile bike ride to burke and to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the september 11 terrorist attacks. the group of 10 firefighters will start in santa clara. the ride will take 40 days and they expect to get to brooklyn by september 10. we spoke with the organizer who said the ride is to honor the lives lost. >> looking at averaging 100

berkeley institute, the race is tightening. the poll found that among voters most likely to participate, 47% support the recall and 50% oppose it. among the alternate candidates, conservative talk show host larry elder has the most support with 34% considering him followed by businessman john cox and former san diego mayor kevin faulconer and assemblymember kevin kiley. all of them are republicans. joining me is the man leading the pack, larry elder. thank you for being here. nice to meet you virtually. >> thank you for having me. i am also a small business owner. i had a business for 14 years and it didn't go bankrupt or get liquidated. i sold it and it still ran for several years. i think it's important that when people come out of the private sector that they have private sector business experience. i bring that to the table.

>> that was going to be my first question. dozens are running to replace newsom and 20 republicans. you are the front runner but there are people in the bay area who may not be familiar with you. a quick pitch. who are you? >> i am a native california resident. my dad was a janitor and worked two jobs and saved his money and buy a home in south central los angeles. he is still in the family. now it is worth $600,000 so somebody with an eighth-grade education like my father could not duplicate his path from poverty to the middle class because of the price of houses in california. the reason for that on the environment extreme is that jack up the cost of housing so developers have to wait and get sued over and over so that finally when the home is built, it is more expensive than otherwise would be.

>> you have name recognition. we see that in the polls. no political experience. how does that make you qualified to run the fifth largest economy in the world? >> don't insult me. i did run for fifth grade class president. really, common sense. i have good judgment. governor gavin newsom has a great deal of experience and was the mayor of new york town and was eight years lieutenant governor so he had time to think about what he would do were he to become governor. he has been governor. we've had rising crime and homelessness. the schools are already behind, among the worst in the nation. in school learning has been deprived of kids for a full year. black boys cannot be at state efficiency. and joined in person private education and his own winery was exempted from the mandates that he put down. for those reasons, that is why

i'm running. >> if you win he would become governor at a time where we will be seeing the rise of the delta variant or other variants. you said you are vaccinated but that you don't support vaccine mandates. how would you get more californians to get vaccinated and what would you do differently? >> i would use my pulpit and tell people that i have been vaccinated. i have comorbidities. there are lots of reasons to get vaccinated. in california, now that vaccines have been readily available and available for free , anyone who wants it. i don't think it makes sense to do what governor gavin newsom did to mandate through you are to be tested once a week if not vaccinated and wear masks and work. >> do you support any mask mandate? especially if the cdc said this is the science? >> i am not sure the cdc says

that. i don't support mandates for masks. i don't support masks mandates for other groups. businesses have made this decision. as a state worker i want demand that you be tested or wear a mask. if i become governor, i will repeal any mandates in place when i become governor. >> you and your challengers all say that governor newsom's policies are extreme. but his team and his supporters have said your policies are extreme. i saw one of his aides tweeted that you called climate change a meth. i have seen you referred to people as global warming alarmists. what is your position on this? do you believe in man-made climate change? >> i have never said climate change is a myth. i have talked about climate change alarmists. climate is always changing. the question is what do we do about it. do we deal with the effects of

it or force-feed a fossil based renewable based economy down the throat of people jacking up the price of energy and disproportionate pain for poor people. the climate is getting warmer by a degree or so in the last several years and it likely will continue. what do we do about it. >> so you do believe that fires in california have gotten worse because of climate change? >> i'm not sure it's because of climate change. the failure of the governor to engage in sensible fire suppression. he lied about a factor of seven by fallen trees and dead vegetation. you look at the people that have forests on private lands. they don't have the same severity of the fires as the public lands. i will hire the best experts and make sure that we do the kind of forest management necessary to reduce the severity of these fires. >> larry elder, we appreciate you being here and hope to continue the conversation ahead

what is called a love letter hoping to persuade this well it seller to accept their offer. that is increasingly a practice that is falling out of favor due to discrimination concerns. >> we can't stop thinking about your home. our dog will love frolicking. our son will build a kingdom out of pillows and blankets in the attic. those are excerpts from a real estate love letter that won a fire a coveted home in oakland. >> they want to make it an emotional connection with the seller. all things are equal with their offer and maybe somebody else's, that maybe somehow the seller will relate more to them and want to sell them the house. that is where we can get into trouble. >> realtors used to advise sellers do not accept love letters with photos on the grounds that could potentially be accused of discrimination. now, increasingly, even the written love letters are coming
