joining us i'm dion lynn. your watching abc 7 news at 6:00. a rise in new covid-19 infections has sonoma county officials considering a mandatory mask mandate in days. the 4th wave of covid-19 is blamed on the contagious variant. sonoma is one of seven counties that has a transmission rate as well as san mateo. reporter bernard cornell explains how how fears over the new strain may be convincing some to get vaccinated now. >> it is extra stress. >> lisa is expecting her first baby in a matter of weeks. she decided to get vaccinated at the santa rosa clinic after family begged her to. >> with the new variant it is scary. my family has emotional issues knowing i am

>> this clinic near the sonoma fair grounds has soon a rise in shots. fears about the delta variant providing incentive. >> 18 to 30-year-olds have come in to get vaccinated. >> 70% of sonoma people are vaccinated but there is 1400 new covid infections, the most since early march. >> this delta variant is changed that narrative and now we are having to be aggressive and be realistic and this is a much nasier component. >> hospital ers are filled with covid-19 patients and health care workers bracing for the surge. it means indoor mask mandate is any day for most bay area counties. we are definitely close to a mandate of wearing masks and i know people are tired of being told what to do but the fact is, this is where we are. >> delta is causing the vast majority of our covid-19 cases right now. and as i said this surge is

going faster than the surge we saw in the fall or winter. >> small business owners in santa rosa will comply with the new rules like they have been doing but for many it is frustrating because for every two steps forward, it is five steps back. really disappointed. i have to say. >> josh silverson says masks are optional in his restaurant but he'll require them if he is asked to. >> certainly not the direction i want to be going in. or most people want go get vaccinated. it is that simple. we are seeing a slight increase in vaccinations state. the average number of dosed climbed above 60,000. over 3.2 million people are partially vaccinated. the state has plenty of doses and reports having 76 days

worth of inventory. starting tomorrow bart is returning to prepandemic levels. trains will run later and more frequently and despite the delta variant bart board's vice president says riders can feel confident that their health is a priority. >> bart is safer because the air is circulated. every 70 seconds it gets circulated and bart has worked in the last year to install new better air filters that filter out smaller air particles. if you are going into an office building every day, bart is safer than that office building. here are the changes effective tomorrow. trains will run until midnight and they will come every 15 minutes during the day. there will be more direct trips to sfo on weekdays and masks are still required to ride. the white house is saying the country is seeing a steady increase in vaccinations over the past several weeks. but all of it comes as top

health officials including dr. fauchi are issuing an ominous warning about the 4th surge. elwin lopez has the story. the delta variant continues to spread across the country. the u.s. topping 100,000 cases saturday for the 1st time since early february. hospitalizations also on the rise. austin, texas a city of 2.3 million people has less than ten icu beds available. >> those people unvaccinated are overwhelmed by this. and having to go to the icus. >> growing concerns for children. many not eligible for vaccination. in louisiana a baton rouge hospital treating 11 kids with covid and six in intensive care. >> some need breathing tubes. >> in florida seeing the highest increase in cases since the pandemic began. health officials in palm beach county say many getting

he bet on his own games and threw them. the nhl has launched an investigation after a series of posts on social media yesterday by anna kain. he responded with a statement on twitter where he denied throwing a game or betting on sharks games or any hockey game for that matter. he says that he welcomes the nhl's investigation and will cooperate. cane and his wife mid of a divorce. >> a driver went down the wrong way in an effort to escape police. you can see the turns here. the vay layo police stopped pursuing him when he drove against traffic and continued the wrong way on i-780. the sparks flew and lost a tire. the driver turned around and went the wrong way on i-80. he attempted two carjackings in the middle of the freeways and

that's when the police arrested two suspects. some people once threatened by the dixie return home today. a number of evacuation lifted. the fire in plum as county is a few miles from paradise where there was a deadly camp fire in 2018. there are 28 mandatory zones and eight new evacuations ordered. it has been burning since july 14th at 382 square miles. opponents of san francisco district attorney chase dubin worked to recall him. there are two recall efforts. they believe his approach has led crime rates. organizers say they have collected the number of required signatures but want to give another 5000 more as a buffer. the deadline for that group to

turn in signatures is august 11th. to the south bay where the reimagined gilroy garlic festival is coming to a close. an organizers say it was a huge success. the first time in the festival's 41 year history it was a drive-thru food event. preorder sales sold out every day. people got a glimpse of food alley and the chefs as they drove to pick up orders. organizers gave us a little tour today. >> doing this was a risk back in april when we were focusing in pause again we were still restricted and the county to see the response and the people coming through smiling, it just -- everyone loved the fact that we were doing it. >> yeah, apparently it was so successful organizers say that even if the traditional gilroy garlic festival is held next year it will still have a drive- thru food option. just ahead. someone really knew what they wanted. a burglar broke into a sacramento museum and went

san francisco honored its long time philanthropist. she cofounded the glide foundation that has helped san franciscoians for decades. the memorial was private that says janice's legacy will live on. >> she has done so much for women and minorities and i can't count how many people lives she changed by herself. she was quite a force. she published several collections of poetry and was the city's poet from 2000 to 2002. she is planning a public memorial for the coming weeks.

someone apparently broke in to the sacramento history museum and made off with several gold artifacts. the burglar was seen on surveillance video entering through the main entrance saturday. the man headed to the display cases with the gold and smashed them. the alarms did go off but by the time officers arrived, the bandit was gone. it is going for more than $1800 an ounce. the museum has not released a value on the items that is stolen. a lake tahoe beach may be getting too popular. what officials will experiment to cut down with traffic on visitors. will we have any beach weather this week? meteorologist drew tuma is up next with your accuweather forecast. coming up in sports. the a's wrap up a season in anaheim and

and they played on the music concourse between the museum and the academy of sciences. they are scheduled each sunday up to october 3rd. visitors can be in for a surprise at the hidden beach. to ease the parking crunch officials are going to try out surge parking. it could cost up to seven dollars an hour to park. those that get there before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. would be able to park for free. there is another wrinkle to keep track of. the museums don't take cash so you will feed a credit card. hidden beach is at the northeast end of the lake on the nevada side of incline village. getting to our weather. maybe not quite beach weather for all of us. >> not all but i think over the next couple of days you will find the warmer weather moving in. today was beautiful. temperatures just slightly below average for a lot of us but that will change over the next 48 hours.

the coast will stay cool and comfortable. overnight despite the mainly clear skies we have we will find our marine layer growing overnight. a lot of us waking up to cloud cover first thing on our monday. temperatures slightly cooler tonight compared to last night. upper 40s to upper 50s first thing tomorrow morning. hour by hour we go future weather the cloud cover first thing. breaking down for some afternoon sunshine. even getting a good dose of sunshine along the immediate coastline. highs in the microclimate in the south bay, 80 and sunny in san jose and santa cruz 74 degrees. 79 in redwood city. 65 for pacifica and down san francisco it is nice. 67 with afternoon sunshine. 65 is the high for daly city. for the north bay it is is is i but not excessively hot. 79 in petaluma and the east bay sitting pretty in the 70s.

tonight on abc 7 news at 11:00. within three days of being back to school 15 people in the brentwood union school district tested positive for covid. what contact tracing has revealed. the leading gop candidate in the gubernatorial elections talk to us tonight at 11. a group of bicyclists have kicked off their journey to ride from the bay area to new york. doing it in honor of the 20th anniversary of the september 11th attack. the bay to brooklyn ride is 3000 miles and cyclists aim to arrive in new york before the anniversary. abc 7 news caught up with them today on route to san
