of people getting vaccinated has been steadily increasing since july 5th, but officials worry that's not fast enough. an alarming rise in covid-19 infections across the country. for the first time since february, cases surpassed 100,000 in a single day over the weekend, and hospital admissions surging to more than 6,000 patients a day. with cases soaring steadily over the past six weeks mainly due to the more contagious delta variant, dr. anthony fauci with a stern warning. >> things are going to get worse. we have 100 million people in this country who are eligible to be vaccinated who are not getting vaccinated. >> reporter: though dr. fauci does not anticipate lockdowns, he says people in areas where vaccination rates are low are at the most risk. more than 76% of counties are now reporting high or substantial transmission rates and louisiana with the highest case rate in the country, hospital admissions have gone up 500% in the last month, and it's

not just adults, our lady of the lake children's health in baton rouge now has 11 kids hospitalized with covid, six in the icu. many who can't yet get the vaccine. >> we're seeing more children who are sick. it's literally twice the amount of children that we're seeing hospitalized than we were during the original surge. >> reporter: in nebraska shelly wachter urging people from her hospital bed not to make the same mistake she did and get vaccinated. >> i could have saved myself and my family so much by having gotten the immunization. >> reporter: the cdc suggested the delta variant is more contagious than the common cold. an average person with a cold can infect two to three people but an average person with the delta variant can infect five to nine people. mona, andrew. >> andrea, thank you. and turning now to our other major headline, millions bracing for more extreme and dangerous

weather out west. monsoon thunderstorms, flash flooding and mudslides are wreaking havoc in colorado. part of an interstate west of denver will be closed for an extended period of time after it was damaged in a mudslide. this morning, dangerous downpours swamping the west, monsoon rains inundating parts of arizona triggering flash floods and creating terrifying scenes like this. entire neighborhoods transformed into rivers as fast-moving stormwaters sweep through the streets and into homes. >> this is insane. >> within a couple of minutes it was overflowing. >> reporter: a similar scene in california after a rare downpour caused serious flooding in joshua tree. meanwhile, the wet weather creating this unprecedented mudslide in colorado. trees and debris swamping interstate 70 trapping dozens of cars and stranding some drivers for days. the thick mud more than ten feet

deep in some spots. colorado officials now saying the slide is so severe and unstable, they don't know when the interstate will re-open, but the flooding is not the only hazard from these storms. lightning strikes sparking new fires in california as firefighters battle massive blazes already burning across the state. meanwhile, this fire in montana has burned more than 65,000 acres becoming the largest fire in the state. the flames moving so fast, even this herd of elk struggled to escape, and now experts warn that a new round of storms are expected to bring wind and lightning but little rain, a combination that could create the perfect storm for wildfires. we'll have a closer look at your forecast coming up in less than five minutes. senators have unveiled the final touch of the trillion dollar bipartisan infrastructure bill. after a rare weekend session senate minority leader senator chuck schumer said a final vote on the 2,700-page legislation could be held within days, but representative alexandria ocasio-cortez says progressives
