live on abc 7, hulu live and wherever you stream. we have a little treat for you if you're just getting up at 6:00 a.m. mr. spencer christian is in the house >> it's good to be here. it's a treat for me. i have a treat for you as well. refreshing weather news. we're starting the week off with good air quality all around the bay area. notice nothing but green dots showing up here indicating we have good air quality in every location. forecast features. we'll have lingering low clouds this morning. you probably discovered that already. if you're up already. sunny and mild to warm during the afternoon hours and then a little bit of a cool down on wednesday with temperatures bouncing back later in the week. highs today will range from low 60s at the coast to mainly mid70s right around the bay shoreline to low 90s inland. mild to warm but nothing extreme enjoy the day. >> spencer, thank you. developing news in the east bay. a fire on bradford island in contra costa county is forcing evacuations. bradford island is about eight

miles northeast of antioch. it's home to only about 25 people. flames sparked around 1:30 this morning. at least 212-acres have burned. two structures have been damaged. crews is a i the fire is burning in an extremely remote area and the only way to the island is by ferry. they're calling the situation dangerous. they say the wind is pushing the flames across the island. it's unclear what started this fire or if anyone was hurt. if you're planning to use bart for your commute today you'll have more options. services returning to near pre- pandemic levels and it's about a month ahead of schedule. amy hollyfield joining us live with more on this. good morning, amy. >> reporter: bart riders say more trains are always welcome, especially at night. this is now going to be great for the people who work late because the hours are going to be extended to midnight. this is going to take bart almost to its pre-pandemic levels and this is happening a month earlier than they had planned. they say the demand is growing.

they got a lot of rider feedback that they were wanting the levels to return to get, you know, better to what they were before the pandemic started. so they are going to have those trains running later and more frequently. and bart board's vice president says riders health is a top priority. >> bart is safer than being in a closed building because the air is circulated much more quickly so every 70 seconds the air gets circulated out of a train car and bart staff worked in the past year to install new even better air filters that filter out smaller air particles so if you're already going into an office building every day, bart is safer than that office building. >> reporter: so here are the changes. trains will run until midnight. that's big for the restaurant industry, healthcare industry. and they'll come every 15 minutes during the day. there will also be more direct trips to sfo on week days.

they do want you to know that masks are still required on board. bart officials say with the bay bridge getting more and more crowded as people return to work they really want to encourage people to get out of their cars and give bart a try. reporting live in el cerrito, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. starting today you can ride san francisco's historic cable cars for free. it's only for this month though. sfmta is testing cape service after it was suspended last year. mayor london breed will join city officials at the cable car turn around and powell and market streets and full service is expected to return early next month. a rise in new covid-19 infections has officials in some bay area counties considering a mandatory mask mandate possibly within days. concerns about the delta variant are also motivating some people to get vaccinated. the clinic at the jockey club near the sonoma county fairgrounds has given 200 shots since last wednesday. 70% of eligible sonoma county

residents are vaccinated. officials say the unvaccinated population is fueling a spike of more than 1400 new infections. the most they've seen since early march. >> this delta variant has really changed that narrative and now we really have to be aggressive and be realistic that this is a much nastier opponent. it's a whole new battle. >> san francisco mayor london breed says the city is close to an indoor mask mandate. some parents in the brentwood union school district plan to protest this morning at garon elementary school calling for an end to the student mask mandate. this protest is coming as covid- 19 is spreading in the community. now just days into the new school year the district has reported 15 positive cases involving students and staff and contact tracing shows none of those cases were transmitted at school. schools intend to stay open and follow state guidelines when it comes to cleaning and notifying parents. the community needs to do its

on this. >> israel is administering a booster shot to vulnerable citizens over age 60 or immuno compromised. the big concern here is that antibodies against covid may wane six months to a year after vaccination. and boosters could provide better protection against new variants. pfizer has been pushing the fda to give emergency authorization for its third shot. this morning dr. francis collins with the nih said top u.s. health officials are looking at this almost daily. >> that's an on going debate. so let me just be clear though that actually the existing approved vaccines in the u.s., pfizer, moderna, j&j do have high effectiveness against delta. there's no reason to rush forward at this present time for a booster decision. but we're going s plned why the fda is hesitant to move

from2000 to 2002. the search is on for the thief who broke into the sacramento history museum and made off with several gold artifacts. surveillance video captured the burglar going in it through the main entrance early saturday. the man headed right to the display cases with the gold and smashed them. the alarms went off. by the time officers got there the thief was gone. gold is currently going for more than $1800 an ouncvalue of stolen items. if there's something strange in your neighborhood you're not going to want to call a new york woman. she fell through the roof of a substation while she says she was hunting for ghosts. police say she had multiple injuries after she felt 20 feet inside the buffalo central terminal. investigators say that she and a man were there without permission. this terminal closed in 1979. it's been abandoned four years and a group is working to

more direct trips to sfo on the weekends. they want you to know that masks are still required to ride. bart officials say with the bay bridge getting more and more congested as people head back to the office they want to encourage you to get back on bart and that's why they're doing this now. they had planned it for the end of this month but here at the beginning of august they're going to expand that service now. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. the covid delta variant continues to spread this morning. there's one age group in particular that is driving the spike in san francisco. jobina fortson with a look at the numbers. >> reporter: it appears millennials are driving the surge in new covid-19 cases. people between the ages of 25 and 39 years old accounted for just 35% of covid cases back in may. that rate went up to 50% month in july. ucsf dr. peter chin-hong told

the chronicle millennials tend to be more social. they have a lower vaccination rate compared to other age groups eligible for the vaccine. two-thirds of millennials in san francisco are fully vaccinated. of course the bay area is doing much better than other parts of the country when it comes to vaccinations. dr. anthony fauci gave this warning yesterday. >> things are going to get worse. we have 100 million people in this country who are eligible to be vaccinated who are not getting vaccinated. >> more than 76% of counties in the u.s. now report high or substantial transmission rates. the delta variant is more contagious than the common cold. while an average person with a cold can infect two to three people the average person with the delta variant could infect five to nine people. the bay area is bracing for new masking rules. they've been considering new restrictions as the delta variant is leading to this surge in cases.

cases are up in san francisco at more than 19 per 100,000 people. the positivity rate is at 5.2%. the possibility of an indoor maskte fovaccinated ccndid me i'm thinking inside is probably okay. just because you're dealing with a bunch of different people who may have different comfort levels and that kind of a thing. outside i think this is a little extreme. >> if we continue to have mask mandates we will not get to herd immunity. we live with the flu, with the cold. at what point in time do we figure out how we co-exist. >> over the weekend san francisco had 95 people in the hospital with covid-19. 23 of those are in the icu. this morning the ceo of robert wood foundation dr. richard besser talked about masks in schools. masks in schools and getting

older students vaccinated if eligible is what will keep everyone safe. as for what parents should do if their school does not enforce mask wear entering that doesn't mean you can't send your child to school with a mask. i would encourage every parent to do that. even if it's not required, it will provide some protection for your children and it will provide protection for those in school who may have a greater risk for severe infection. >> you can watch the full interview coming up at 7:00 on gma after abc 7 mornings. today the alumna association of mills college will hold a rally outside of alameda court. it comes ten days before a potential vote that could seal the fate of the college. in march officials announced mills would no longer be a college. alumna filed a lawsuit claiming they were blind sided by the announcement to shut merge with university. that rally starts at 11:00 this morning. hundreds of low income students will be getting new

we're seeing new video of a police chase that ended with two arrests in vallejo. captured every turn on saturday. this was wild. police say they stopped pursuing the driver when he started driving against traffic and continued the wrong way on to 780. sparks flew from the car when it lost a tire. the driver eventually stopped then tried to carjack two vehicles in the middle of the freeway. and that is where police were able to make those arrests. the national hockey league is investigating san jose

sharks forward evander kane. his wife says evander bet on his own games and even threw them. evander responded denying those allegations and he says he welcomes the nhl's investigation and will cooperate. the couple is in the middle of a divorce. opponents of san francisco's da spent part of the weekend working to recall him. they were out gathering signatures yesterday. there are two recall efforts. both claim the approach has led to increased crime rates. organizers of the first effort say they've collected the number of required signatures but they want to get 5000 more as a buffer. the deadline for that group to turn in signatures is august 11th. evictions have resumed across much of the nation. tenants in california are still protected under a state eviction moratorium. that goes through september 30th. renters in most other states are at risk. a mother in atlanta got an eviction notice yesterday.
