4:32 pm
vaccine team is joining us now, to talk a little bit more about the recent surge in cases, and a new report out says children or cases in children have nearly doubled in the past week, in the united states. how alarming is that for you, as we start to talk about back to school scenarios? >> it is alarming, it is just another example of how incredibly contagious this variant is. let's be realistic and think about the fact that we were looking at numbers previously, not only did we have a list contagious variance, but we were in lockdown. it is surprising, but it is something to keep our eye on as we get back to in prison learning. two things need to happen, we need to have protective measures for those who cannot get vaccinated, and everyone about the age of 12 who can be vaccinated copies to do so to protect the young was. >> all right, so back-to- school, there are a lot of parents who don't want their kids to wear a mask. we have
4:33 pm
seen people protesting about that. what is your overall take the house a visit to go back to school? should kids be masked up? >> there is one thing we need to keep in mind, it is a mostly a unifying force, everyone on everyone side of the argument once kids back in person learning. then we talk about how to keep them safe kids under 12 cannot get vaccinated. what do you want to do? we have to mask up and encourage teachers and everyone around them to be vaccinated. if we can get distancing great, if you can get ventilation, but is awesome. there has to be some protective measure, we cannot let this be like it is fall 2019, when we have an incredibly contagious and potentially more dangerous variant out there. so when we think about it common thread we can reach on both sides of the aisle. >> yesterday, sf general a lot people who look at the johnson and johnson vaccine, the ability to get a pfizer or moderna burster booster.
4:34 pm
here is the response from the white house. >> that isn't based on public health guidance divided by the cbc. that has not changed, no different localities will make the decision, but is not affected of current public health guidance. >> what do you think i am trying to remember, i think was a report out of europe indicating mixing the vaccines actually would be a better deterrent than sticking with one. where are you on this? >> you are right, there are a couple of reports out of europe looking at making astrazeneca in combination with pfizer. was another study out of new york sewing it is possible to lower antibody response, and johnson and johnson may not be as responsive to the delta variant. as of right now there is no national guidance for people out there, to be taking an additional shot if they got johnson and johnson. this is happening vocally in san francisco. with and it country if you are
4:35 pm
curious, speak with your physician, or if you are concerned and you have questions. one thing that concerns me is when we do things like this and it is not based on national guidance i wouldn't want the average person to run out and lie cvs to get an additional shot that is what i am hearing now on social media. people think hey, i got the johnson & johnson, should i go down to get pfizer or moderna? that is the focus. >> on one hand we can't get enough people to vaccinate, and on the other hand we have people getting too many vaccinations. >> where is the middle ground? >> what are your colleagues -- we heard one say we never make it to herd immunity, at this rate. >> he is a legend, i agree with him if we are talking about vaccines acquired herd immunity. unfortunately, we could get to a level of herd immunity, if we combine vaccine and national
4:36 pm
immunity. this means more people are getting infected, hospitalized, and diane. one thing that is probably in our future, is the coronavirus become endemic, meaning it will be with us for the foreseeable future. we will have a certain level of community immunity against it, and hopefully we will see less of an impact than what we are seeing now. it is concerning, even with what is happening now, and hospitals filling up, we are rarely over 80% of the country fully vaccinated, others in the world would do anything to have the privilege to go get a vaccine, for free, down the street. >> it is a bizarre situation, we have all of the resources but people don't want to take advantage of it. as always, thank you so much for your time. >> thank you. ikea, your heart is at the heart of everything you do. and if you have heart failure, there's entresto. trtoasroven peri

4:40 pm
we are already seeing that in places that require a simple mask. what is your take? >> i am not opposed to the mandate at all but i don't know how you enforce it. there is an angry and vocal element out there that will resist. i hate seeing restaurant employees put in the position of enforcing a mandate. i am not opposed to it. i want to live, i want the people around me to live. >> that is a good goal. >> yes. >> the rest of the weather department wants you to live. fit want to cover your shift. >> like you said, i worry about the workers who have to deal with people coming in and saying i am not going to do this or that. has gone to a point of ridiculousness. it is hard, how do you enforce it? how do you not make it difficult thing for employees? >> it puts the burden on others
4:41 pm
, if you don't get a vaccination, you don't get to enjoy the shows, or restaurants. it is a perk. right? we told you yesterday that san francisco general is offering a supplemental dose of the mrna vaccine, for anyone who got the johnson and johnson boxing. but as you just heard, science doesn't necessarily support this . focal communities can still do it. the chief of emergency medicine said the data so far does support use, in everything he is seeing, suggesting datable recommended soon, making it very clear they are not currently recommending that. but you have johnson & johnson, talk to your doctor and say i need the pfizer or moderna for whatever reason, they will give it to you now. what do you think? are you ready to get another shot? will we call it a booster? >> whatever it takes. that is it, end of story, period. do what we have to do to make
