you can see the staircase right here. if we walk just a few feet you can see this patio table. it's here but it's melted. people were so grateful to have made it out alive, but two days after this fire, eight people are still unaccounted for. this morning, flames sweeping the west coast roaring in size. california's dixie fire now the third largest in the state's history, greater than the size of houston, destroying over 100 homes, eviscerating the gold rush town of greenville. it looks like a bomb went off in this area. homes and buildings that have withstood the test of time for over 100 years now decimated. what was once a small downtown now a ghost town. multiple people still reported missing two days later. and firefighters' work is far from over. we're just a few minutes out from greenville. firefighters are intentionally and strategically lighting this

part of the forest on fire right now to try and save the remaining homes. further south the river fire exploding to nearly 3,000 acres. three people including a firefighter injured. >> well, i'm thinking that better get out of there. >> reporter: one resident shooting this before fleeing his house. >> well, it's completely gone and all our neighbors, great neighbors, they're leveled. >> reporter: the megadrought in the west one of the main factors for the explosive fires. lake oroville a major provider of water in the region no longer providing resources from their hydroelectric power plant because of a lack of water. overnight, containment for the dixie fire plunging, down to 20%, and 14,000 structures still remain threatened. dan. >> zohreen, thank you so much. let's turn now to the latest on the pandemic. according to the cdc 50% of the u.s. population is now fully vaccinated. still the country recorded its

highest single-day case total in six months friday with 120,000 ca cases. hospitals are now on the brink and janai is in times square with much more on this. janai, good morning once again. >> reporter: dan, good morning. the delta variant overwhelming communities as the surge in covid cases is beginning to overwhelm hospitals in some states. in florida, where the situation is growing more dire, a medical center in palm beach was forced order to open up more beds for - patients hospitalized with the virus. experts predicting six in ten florida hospitals will face critical staffing shortages within the next week and harris county, texas, raising its threat level to red this week as frontline workers are drowning in the cascade of new covid cases there, and we spoke with one mother whose 11-month-old baby had to be airlifted to another 150 miles away because there were no pediatric icu beds available in houston. friday, the u.s. recording its single highest day in covid cases in six months as dan said with 120,000, the country now averaging more than 96,000 new

really want to make sure we get shots in arms around the country. >> and why is this renewed push for vaccinations so important right now? >> well, as you know, this delta variant is about twice as infectious as other variants. it's causing severe disease. we have just over the last 14 days about 113% increase in the number of new cases in the u.s. and this is very alarming. despite having 50% of the population vaccinated, we believe that this extra push to get shots in arms is incredibly important to further end this pandemic and get us back to a place where we were previously. >> you're kroger's medical expert. what are you doing to keep customers and employees safe. are masks and vaccine mandates still a possibility at this point? >> well, at this point what we've been doing, and we've been doing this all along since the

beginning of the pandemic, is with a laser focus on keeping our customers and our associates safe and especially our associates. we've invested millions of dollars in ppe and those types an associate at krt nou' ure we strongly recommend that everyone be in masks in our stores and at this point the vaccine is not mandatory but we're looking at all options and we're encouraging all of our associates to get vaccinated as soon as possible. as we know, vaccination and getting this vaccine is both safe and effective at preventing not only severe illness but hospitalization and death. >> you also have an important back to basics health reminder for everyone. tell us about that this morning. >> well, you know, we -- if you look back at january, at the height of the pandemic, the number of new cases, the vaccine was not widely available to most americans, and we relied on some

the inside of an old growth tree burning from the inside out, the dixie fire now i think the third largest fire in california history as we mentioned the last hour, six of the last seven largest fires in california happened in the last year, goodness. that's smoke and fire. looking like mar downwind of that fire. red flag warnings posted for tomorrow across parts of montana. air quality alerts in wyoming and colorado because of the smoke. triple-digit heat is coming back. here's the pattern with that smoke. continuing to drift off to the east and some of this is getting all the way into the great lakes and triple-digit heat is returning to northern california and parts of the intermountain here is your day planner. temperatures will be in the 50's and 60's at 9:00 with some fog at the beach throughout the day

"red: taylor's version" drops november 19th. so circle the date on your calendar. also this morning, news from taylor's we'll call him a frenemy. kanye west has been hard at work on his tenth studio album "donda" after delays, a listening party and kanye himself taking up residence at atlanta's mercedes-benz stadium to finish the album, the superstar giving fans another taste of the new tracks when he hosted a second listening party at the stadium and there's that video of kanye levitating high above the crowd.

most airlines now waive the fees if you want to cancel for any reason, you'll get your miles and taxes and fees back. even if you buy tickets, most airlines will let you change for free. however, if you book the cheapest tickets, those basic economy fares, they do have some hefty change fees associated with them. highly recommend booking in advance. if you're not comfortable traveling change your plans, most airlines and hotels have flexible cancellation policies. >> so a lot of people really haven't been traveling much the last couple of years they might be a little rusty, nervous to get back out there. you're traveling all the time. what are your pro tips for travelers as they head out there? >> my number one tip is pack a good attitude. you know, we've seen a lot of reports of unruly passengers in the sky. get to the airport a little bit earlier, be nice to the flight attendants, you know, the airline employees are at their breaking point. they're understaffed with more and more people traveling so don't be that unruly passenger and if possible, get vaccinated.
