that pregnant women should get a covid vaccine. good evening and thank you for joining us. >> our news reporter explains why the cbc is stepping up its recommendation and the dire consequences for many unborn babies whose mothers get covid. >> the cdc is now urging pregnant women to get vaccinated. the strength and guidance comes from new data that shows no increased of miscarriage in early pregnancy and no safety concerns late in pregnancy with an mrna vaccine. >> early on, it was very understandable to wait for more data. >> but now, eight months into the vaccine rollout with safety data from thousands of women, a high risk ucsf ob/gyn says this to expecting moms. >> i would recommend getting the vaccine as soon as possible. i think it is the best thing you can do for you and your baby. >> according to the cbc, only 23% of pregnant women have gotten a covid shot as of july 31.

even though they are more vulnerable to severe covid infections. >> i've taken care of patients in the icu that have been on ventilators for a long period of time, have had to deliver early, and the long-term consequences of having such a severe infection during pregnancy for their baby is still unknown. >> one consequence is known. in the largest study of its time, a team of researchers showed that pregnant women infected with covid are 40% more likely to have a premature baby and for a very premature births below 32 weeks, the risk increased to 60%. >> now with the surge of delta and the increases in cases we are seeing among pregnant women, we think these findings are really critical to get out to people. >> one epidemiologist helped author the study based on 200 40,000 expecting california women not vaccinated at the time. it showed people of color face a disproportionate risk. >> we really also need to

dan: there are signs tonight that the delta variant is dampening demand for air travel. cancellations are rising while passenger loads and airfares are on the decline. >> activists in the north bay are protesting the growing number of vaccine mandates in the bay area. the group is using flyers to send warnings to business owners who may hire proof of vaccination from customers. cornell bernard is in novato. >> let's move them out. >> activists fanned out through downtown novato late wednesday night posting yellow flyers with a warning to local businesses who make an hiring proof of vaccination from customers. >> this is extremely dangerous. it is very divisive. it is segregationist. it is discriminatory. the people who want vaccine passports are the ones who are happy to let you go bankrupt because they are too afraid to go out for over a year. the people who want you in business are the ones you will be banning. >> the word boycott does not appear on the flyer, but

neighbors safe. >> in novato, cornell bernard. dan: teachers in california must get vaccinated or tested under a new mandate issued today by the governor. he calls the requirement a bold step to rein in the pandemic. governor newsom says the order expands well beyond teachers. >> all of our staff, not just teachers, credentialed staff, para-educators, custodial staff, the bus drivers, folks that are critical to supporting the entire school ecosystem. dan: association supports the requirement and claims at least 90% of its members are already fully vaccinated. schools must be in full compliance with the order by october 15. stanford university will require weekly covid-19 testing regardless of vaccination status. the rule starts on sunday. they announced in news in the tweet today, saying they believe they are the first university in

charring more than 790 square miles, that is roughly the size of los angeles. crews are making progress thanks to better weather conditions and just hours ago, some evacuation orders and warnings were downgraded. the fire is now 30% contained. here is more news about the fire. smoke from all of those flames burning across northern california is expected to drift back into the bay area tomorrow. >> we have a look at what we can expect. >> we are looking at hazy, smoky conditions. let me show you the air quality right now. it is good across most of the bay area. everyone in the green, not so great, right around the wildfires own it is unhealthy for many parts. you will notice how much smoke those wildfires are putting out. this is a satellite perspective. it is absolutely awful. the wind is going to transport some of that smoke down near the surface into our area tomorrow. you will notice some red. that is some heavier smoke

this is some of what was found recently. an east bay based cybersecurity expert for the company -- >> for those people adamant against being vaccinated, they are finding opportunities at not being limited in what they can do, while still not getting vaccinated, through buying these fake vaccination certificates. >> she says the fakes look like the real thing. >> in the united states, where we only have a physical paper copy, it is not that hard to forge. >> it is not just locally, checkpoints experts have found the cards interviewed -- available internationally. >> there are countries who are saying you can't go indoors anywhere unless you show proof of vaccination. >> the cards are often for sale in bitcoin, the digital currency is difficult to trace. >> bitcoin is a lot easier to get away with these crimes. >> interest is growing. >> we are seeing a big increase in the number of people who are following these groups, who are joining these groups, and we can

only assume that that means that there is a big increase in the number of people who are actually purchasing these fake vaccination cards as well. >> we checked in with schools and employers requiring how the cards are legit. california f dai. smaller companies like bay area startup neverland tells us they will do their best to spot fake cards by following any official guidance they can find. developing concern as the number of places requiring covid-19 vaccinations continues to grow. abc 7 news. dan: new developments governor newsom says additional law enforcement support is heading to oakland to help with the crime problem. j.r. stone explains that it comes after community leaders pleaded with the governor to declare a state of emergency. >> the mayor and i had a conversation about a more formal request. i told her she can count on that request. j.r.: california governor gavin

newsom referring to a request made by the oakland mayor for additional law enforcement support in oakland due to escalating violence. >> we are responding to the demands from our ren for more law enforcement safety. j.r.: the formal request came after the chinatown chamber of commerce president sent to the governor's office a letter requesting that a state of emergency be declared in the wake of recent violence on city streets. >> we want you to bring in california highway patrol. j.r.: the state of emergency will not be declared, but the governor says the state is investing more than $400 million to address street crimes and hate crime statewide. much of that money being offered to cities in the form of grants. >> all of those supports are new. all of those supports are available. additional law enforcement support will be forthcoming into oakland. j.r.: that support will come in the form of chp patrols.
