>> live breaking news from abc 7. >> breaking news, a taliban conolf anta afte enter kabul to arrange a transfer of power. right away, new developments are coming in by the minute on the situation in afghanistan. faith abu bank tells us the taliban has taken control of the presidential cap -- palace. >> president ashraf ghani afterr the taliban arrived at the presidential palace. a new reconciliation council will be formed by a leader and the former afghan president. in a statement they said the council's goal is to prevent chaos and resume -- reduce the suffering of the afghan people. kabul was the final destination

in the taliban's lightning fast offensive. they took all major cities in just over a week. the taliban told residents they should not fear the truce and none of the fighters would enter anyone's homes or harass them. sunday, all routes out of kabul were sealed off. the emergency evacuation of the u.s. embassy is underway. >> the focus has to be on getting these brave american personnel out and our brave afghans who helped us through the years out. >> this processing center, filled with afghans who helped the west during the 20 year war, now fearing for their lives. x we served the american forces, for the u.s. and coalition forces. they have to take care of us. >> other afghans are bracing for what is to come. >> life has become difficult for people. people are worried about the way the taliban treated us before.

we just want peace. >> the biden administration is defending the decision to withdraw u.s. troops. >> the president determined it was time to end the war for the united states, to get out of the middle of a civil war in afghanistan. >> some in congress are taking aim at both biden and trump administrations. >> president biden bears responsibility, but there is no question president trump and his administration, secretary pompeo, bear significant responsibility. president trump told us that taliban would fight terror. secretary pompeo told us the taliban would renounce al qaeda. none of that has happened. dion: america went to afghanistan 20 years ago to defeat the forces that attacked the u.s. on september 11. the biden administration set may 1 as the official start of the withdrawal of remaining forces, about 3500 u.s. troops. that met the exit deadline the trump administration to go to -- negotiated with the taliban last

year. president biden called an end for the u.s. military mission in afghanistan august 31. officials authorized sending 2000 troops to safely evacuate u.s. personnel as well as afghans who helped american troops. with the increase there will be 6000 troops in afghanistan. a very -- bay area nonprofit is pleading for help to evacuate their employees in kabul. cheryl jennings spent time there with the charity roots of peace and interviewed president ashraf ghani. the group's co-founder told abc 7 that she is worried and frightened about what could happen next in afghanistan. it is a story you will see only on abc 7. >> it is absolutely not only a crisis, it is catastrophic. >> roots of peace founder and ceo heidi kuhn was desperately

trying to help her 360 employees, stuck in kabul. kuhn sent a letter to president biden pleading for help. >> please provide military aircraft to safely get my staff and their immediate families out of afghanistan right now. >> roots of peace have -- has been doing work for two decades, replacing landmines with crops and helping local farmers. kuhn believes her employees are at double risk of being targeted by taliban forces since they work for a u.s. government-funded nonprofit run by a woman. >> right now, that has a price. on my head, on their heads. >> a solidarity ceremony at kuhn 's home supporting the afghan people and praying for peace. >> many people here have worked for roots of peace and have family back home in afghanistan. they fear for their safety. >> they are really scared. >> hamid hopes his sisters can

through dried brush and trees. it has burned over 554,000 acres , or 860,000 square miles, a little more than all of solano county combined. calfire says firefighters are working on building a containment line and are trying to protect as many homes as possible. the dixie fire has destroyed more than 1100 buildings. taking a live look at the hazy skies in the bay area, all of this due to the smoke from wildfires, not only in northern california but oregon as well. drew tuma has a look at our air quality and things are set to improve. drew: tomorrow we will find improvement but right now, hazy skies. the smoke is elevated. the marine lerthe onshore winds are helping keep the smoke away from the surface. east bay hills, if you are in the hills youan certainly see and smell the smoke. a live look, hazy conditions

dion: it's back to school for students in san francio could br first time in a classroom in well over a year. students will need to wear masks indoors and there is another requirement for teachers and staff. they need to be vaccinated by september 7 or be tested weekly for covid until they are fully vaccinated. in addition, the district is offering virtual learning for those who are concerned about returning to campus. san francisco's great highway is never going to -- is going to partially reopen for the first time since the pandemic began. it has been restricted to pedestrians and bicyclists. we were there for a protest to keep it off limits to vehicles. after tomorrow, weekends and holidays will be the only times cars will be restricted. reopen because of the traffic being diverted to other streets.

>> our city has a lot of streets that go north-south, about 40 that can get people from where they need to go in a car, to the other side. no streets that are preserved for walkers, car-free. >> parking big -- has become an issue. everything is affected. quality-of-life issues have been affected. dion: those in favor of reopening the highway have an online petition that has been signed by 12,000 people. in a victory for environmental and community groups, read hillview airport in east san jose will run on unleaded fuel. an announcement is expected from the local aviation community tomorrow. unleaded fuel will be introduced for the aircraft. the change comes as a growing number of officials demanded the airport's closure because of unsafe lead levels from planes. supporters say the airport is critical for smaller planes and emergency operations. people shared music and memories ♪f san w

longtime partner. >> my god, what a destiny. janice m times. and letting it all hang out. so that she could say one day, didn't want to die. not me. dion: mirikitani was the daughter of japanese immigrants. she found her calling with glide in the late 1960's. she was a writer and san francisco's second poet laureate. turning once again to the weather and the heat will subside a little bit, at least for the inland parts of the bay area. drew: improving conditions not only in temperatures, but also in our sky conditions over the next couple days. today, certainly hazy no matter where you are. satellite over the bay area, this is from today, you can see all that smoke creating a haze.

the marine layer, very close to the surface, helping keep the smoke from really impacting our air quality. most of us have good to moderate air quality. fresh air is on the the near surface smoke. tomorrow when we wake up, i anticipate to find those hazy skies first thing in the morning, but by the afternoon we will find gusty onshore winds developing and that will push the smoke tower east. we will find by monday afternoon, our air quality is much better. that looks to be the case as well on tuesday. close to the coast, fresh air, perhaps some haze in lent improving pit -- conditions -- haze inland that improving conditions. a battle going on between intense heat inland and the cool onshore breeze. 100 in brentwood, 105 in cloverdale, one hundred 17 clear lake but the marine layer is persistent, so it is keeping the city cool at 63.
