francisco sunday night, the social distancing markers down on the ground and kids ready to go. >> i got all the things i need to be ready with. reporter: while parents have their opinion -- >> do i feel comfortable? that's a good question. comfortable enough. >> i don't think it's a good idea. we still have to wear masks. reporter: kids have their opinions. >> i am very excited to see my friends again. >> i'm kind of nervous, but kind of happy at the same time. >> i feel nervous for the fact that it might be a little risky with the delta variant out there, but i'm also excited to see my friends at go back to school. reporter: friday, district administrators showed what classrooms looked like. we saw windows that opened, air purifiers, hand sanitizer, reminder to follow the safety plan, and masks for teachers and students. the health department says san

muni free of charge. all kids 18 and under can write it for free -- ride it for free regardless of financial status. they are asked not to ask for proof of payment. kids over 16 are encouraged to bring a school id. students at west contra costa unified schools will also be returning to in person learning tomorrow, including at michelle obama elementary school. schools will be on the richmond campus for the first time since the school was rebuilt and named after the former first lady. michelle obama held a virtual grand opening at the start of the 2021 school year. all this week, we'll be focused on back-to-school as part of our efforts to build a better bay area. we have special pieces airing each night at 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. tune in to how we difficult -- tackle morning losses of the school year.

years ago with one mission in mind, and less to deal with the people who attacked us on 9/11. and that mission has been successful. reporter: president biden spending more troops to help speed up the evacuation of u.s. personnel and some afghan visa applicants. embassy staff was told to destroy documents. operations moved to the airport for safety. president biden briefed his national security team sunday, including general kenneth mckenzie, head of central command who met with the taliban indo hall, warning them -- in doha sunday, warning them not to interfere with their mission. on the streets of kabul, fear and uncertainty. long lines at banks as residents looked to withdraw savings, desperate scenes at the chaos as thousands looked to flee, women, especially girls who have grown up with freedom and rights are

now worried that could change. yet some are defiant. >> we are not people that are going back to the dark era. what should i be scared of? this is my homeland. reporter: after 20 years of war costing $1 trillion and tens of thousands of lives, tonight, so many questioning, what was this all for and what will the future hold? >> so many of us signed up. we want to start our country. we want to do something good. and going to afghanistan for three different tours, so many of us really believed that we could be part of making a better afghanistan. dion: the if ends in afghanistan are also having a profound impact on people here in the bay area. it's estimated 60,000 afghan americans live in the region. some told tim johns theves ha b heart-wrenching.

it's a story two decades in the making, but one without a happy ending. >> immediate reaction is how could this be happening? it seems like a reversal of everything that we've done in the last 20 years. tim: she's an afghan american writer and educator based in the east bay. she says the events currently unfolding in afghanistan have left her community devastated. >> 20 years ago, there was a sentiment of hope. today, there's a sentiment of grief. it's hopelessness now. tim: she still has family in the country. and although she was able to get in touch with them sunday morning, she still fears for the safety of her cousins and aunts. >> she was afraid. she didn't know what was going to happen to her. and she didn't know what was going to happen to her children. tim: but beyond the immediate connection, she says her heart also breaks for other afghans, too, especially women and young children. >> it's not a question of if. it's a question of when these young girls lives are going to

be destroyed. tim: with the country falling apart seemingly overnight, many are asking what happened? congressman eric swalwell represents california's 15th district, the heart of the local afghan community. he tells me it's not a time to focus on what went wrong, but instead on what we need to do next. >> i support the effort to deploy troops to protect the embassy and make sure that americans, allied partners, and eligible afghans who helped us are able to get out as quickly as possible. tim: but those people are only the tip of the iceberg, and she knows there's work to be done in helping out has -- is only just beginning. >> without hope, without any kind of life to look forward to, the only thing that they will have to look forward to is survival. tim: per presented a swell well's office represented a swell well's -- representative eric swalwell's office is set to

founder was up all night, desperately trying to help her 360 employees stuck in kabul. she just sent this letter to president biden, pleading for help. >> please provide me military aircraft to safely get my staff and their immediate families out of afghanistan right now. cornell: marine counties -- marin county's roots of peace have been doing work in afghanistan for two decades, helping farmers thrive. but her employees are now at double risk of being targeted by taliban forces since they work for a u.s. government-funded nonprofit run by a woman. >> right now, that has a price on my head, on their heads. cornell: a solidarity ceremony at her home supporting the afghan people and praying for peace. many people here have worked for roots of peace and have family backominfghanianand

close to the coast bringing the fresh air, so improving air quality the next two days. temperatures tonight in the 60's around the bay shoreline, but still some warm air inland, 81 in brentwood, still near 90 in clear lake. earlier, we had a heat advisory that expired 8:00 p.m. 60 in santa rosa, 60 four that current temperature in palo alto. we have the coastal cloud cover, coastal drivel -- drizzle and patchy fog in parts of the east bay. much of the south bay with hazy conditions. temperatures in mid-50's for most of us first thing tomorrow morning. let's time out those temperatures and the marine layer. 7:00 a.m. by about 9:00 a.m., any thought around the bay shoreline has broken down. warming up pretty quickly inland. warming spots are well into the

dion: as students head back to school, parents are spending more than ever. sophie flight explains what is going behind the costs. sophie: families are spending a record amount on school supplies this year. families will spend an average of $850 per household for grades k-12. a clinical marketing professor at usc school for business says it's due to an unusual school year caused by the pandemic. >> a lot of retailers target office depot, those places that tended to have very heavy sales

on notebooks and pens and various other things. and i haven't seen those sales that much. sophie: data shows there is an 8% increase in spending on back-to-school clothing and shoes. >> during the pandemic, there was a notable trend that people would buy tops. they wouldn't focus on things people couldn't see on zoom. sophie: the average person is inspected to state -- spent over $300 on electronics this year. when it comes to electronics, laptops beat out tablets and even calculators. local parents say they spent $400 on school supplies this year for their two young children in public school. >> whatever it takes for these public school systems to get whatever they need, we're happy to, but it is an astronomical number. it makes me think of families who might not have enough. sophie: according to the calabasas school list, items like soap, facial tissue, and hand sanitizer are now included on the list, saying this cost five times the amount they
