francisco schools are safe. >> during the last academic year, out of the 48,000 students that were in schools, both private, public, and charter, there were only seven documented cases of in school transmission. reporter: and this year, the district is requiring that staff be vaccinated by september 7 or take weekly covid-19 tests. one thing is clear. students we talk with may be small, but they have strong feelings about last school year and this one that begins monday. >> like i said, staring at a computer screen and listening to the teacher speak isn't the full definition of what i call educating, so i think going back to in pers sd better. reporter: and the celebration would start early in the city on monday as the mayor and state senator will be in the bayview district to welcome kids back. in san francisco, j.r. stone, abc 7 news. dion: just in time for school tomorrow, all kids can now ride

muni free of charge. all kids 18 and under can write it for free -- ride it for free regardless of financial status. they are asked not to ask for proof of payment. kids over 16 are encouraged to bring a school id. students at west contra costa unified schools will also be returning to in person learning tomorrow, including at michelle obama elementary school. schools will be on the richmond campus for the first time since the school was rebuilt and named after the former first lady. michelle obama held a virtual grand opening at the start of the 2021 school year. all this week, we'll be focused on back-to-school as part of our efforts to build a better bay area. we have special pieces airing each night at 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. tune in to how we difficult -- tackle morning losses of the school year.

moving onto the dixie fire, still raging in northern california, burning 570,000 acres. there is concern the weather is going to take another turn in the coming days, and pg&e says it may be forced to cut power in the area. it's identified tuesday night into wednesday as a potential slot for public safety shutoff. near the fire zone, mendocino and shasta county's could be affected. sonoma, napa, and solano counties could be affected by a ps ps. we'll be watching it closely this week. drwaordrew: w are seeing an offe component to the wind development, especially tuesday night into wednesday morning. northbay, advancing the clock and you can see in parts of napa county in the hills of the eastern half, the winds pick up between 20-30 miles per hour. fire danger indexes is indicating that. low fire danger, except for

years ago with one mission in mind, and less to deal with the people who attacked us on 9/11. and that mission has been successful. reporter: president biden spending more troops to help speed up the evacuation of u.s. personnel and some afghan visa applicants. embassy staff was told to destroy documents. operations moved to the airport for safety. president biden briefed his national security team sunday, including general kenneth mckenzie, head of central command who met with the taliban indo hall, warning them -- in doha sunday, warning them not to interfere with their mission. on the streets of kabul, fear and uncertainty. long lines at banks as residents looked to withdraw savings, desperate scenes at the chaos as thousands looked to flee, women, especially girls who have grown up with freedom and rights are

now worried that could change. yet some are defiant. >> we are not people that are going back to the dark era. what should i be scared of? this is my homeland. reporter: after 20 years of war costing $1 trillion and tens of thousands of lives, tonight, so many questioning, what was this all for and what will the future hold? >> so many of us signed up. we want to start our country. we want to do something good. and going to afghanistan for three different tours, so many of us really believed that we could be part of making a better afghanistan. dion: the if ends in afghanistan are also having a profound impact on people here in the bay area. it's estimated 60,000 afghan americans live in the region. some told tim johns theves ha b heart-wrenching.

it's a story two decades in the making, but one without a happy ending. >> immediate reaction is how could this be happening? it seems like a reversal of everything that we've done in the last 20 years. tim: she's an afghan american writer and educator based in the east bay. she says the events currently unfolding in afghanistan have left her community devastated. >> 20 years ago, there was a sentiment of hope. today, there's a sentiment of grief. it's hopelessness now. tim: she still has family in the country. and although she was able to get in touch with them sunday morning, she still fears for the safety of her cousins and aunts. >> she was afraid. she didn't know what was going to happen to her. and she didn't know what was going to happen to her children. tim: but beyond the immediate connection, she says her heart also breaks for other afghans, too, especially women and young children. >> it's not a question of if. it's a question of when these young girls lives are going to
