u.s. cities to mandate full vaccinations for many indoor activities. good evening and thank you for tuning us. anchor: j.r. stone joining us live from the newsroom. san francisco is about to get a lot tougher when it comes to vaccinations. reporter: they are. does this owners i talked with hope it brings people in versus scaring them away because they say it's been tough of late. enforcement of some of these restrictions could take officers off the streets. san francisco police officers, firefighters, and sheriff's office deputies are feeling the pressure to get vaccinated. the city now recommending that eight officers, seven firefighters, and two deputies be suspended without pay for not reporting their vaccination status. the news comes in light of additional san francisco restrictions that all of us will face come friday. proof of vaccination will be required at indoor businesses like bars, restaurants, gyms, and museums like the exploratory

deputies, and firefighters, is left up to department heads on whether they should be suspended. the city is coming down hard, saying these individuals could eventually lose their job. back to you. anchor 2: thank you. apple is delaying its return to offices until january at the earliest as covid cases search. retail stores and offices will not close. the company is encouraging vaccines. charles schwab is delaying a full return to the office for its employees until january at the earliest. the company is planning to reward workers for their efforts, giving each a 5% pay increase. larry: the mass rollout of booster shots. distribution is not expected to begin until september 20. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo jo found there's a push to prepare now to prevent the chaos that happened during the first round of vaccinations. reporter: there was no planning

for the covid-19 pandemic. early vaccination distribution resulted in long lines and operations that left a lot to be desired. fast forward eight months. several counties including santa clara are making plans for the mass rollout of booster shots. the supervisor is adamant, now is the time to get ready. >> people are starting to ask, do i need a booster? how do i get it? we have to have good answers for that. reporter: jennifer tung says the federal government's announcement about booster shots becoming widely available to everyone beginning symptom or 20th provides the county a clearer timeline to work towards. >> we are able to know roughly in the county how many people were vaccinated over time to be able to plan for the volumes that will be eligible for booster shots based on that eight month timeline. reporter: as the biggest county, there's plenty to consider. how might private providers, large telco systems, and more fit into those future plans?

the county's role is to augment that existing infrastructure. >> we anticipate this will probably be rolled out in phases. reporter: the county public health officer telling supervisors tuesday, the most vulnerable will be recommended for the third shot first followed by others. >> we have to figure out a way to make sure everybody's on the same page. that it's clear, consistent, and easy. if it is, people will step up. if it's not, they want. reporter: abc 7 news. larry: strict new mask rules tonight for students and teachers while they're on campus , indoors and outdoors. >> we are basically saying that when you arrive on campus, put on your facial covering. that's what you're using for the day. we are encouraging breaks where people can remove their facial coverings. they can't cover their faces when they are eating and drinking. ama: if there's no evidence of saved -- significant infections, the health department may revise

the guidelines after a few weeks. this was the first day of school for many schools in marin. if you want to get tested for covid-19, we have a link on our website. larry: developing news now. lake county firefighters keeping a close watch on the cash fire tonight. it has burned 83 acres, 40% contained. no deaths reported. 72 people have checked in at an evacuation center. the fire burned remarkably fast threw two mobile home parks yesterday on the south end of clearlake. >> it moved so fast, when fire crews arrived, they found a half-acre lawn on fire but the wind was quickly blowing the flames toward mobile home parks. police immediately began going door-to-door to get people out of harm's way. 1500 students were evacuated from five schools in the area. those schools need a deep cleaning before reopening on monday.

take this decision lightly but they felt it was necessary to ensure public and firefighter safety. ama: the cal door fire slowed things to high humidity. that gave liz -- grizzly flats residents a chance to see if their homes were standing. thousands of homes remain threatened. the fire exploded to more than 100 square miles in less than five days. it is still 0% contained. the monstrous dixie fire has scorched close to 700,000 acres and is growing substantially. firefighters are trying to keep it from jumping highway 395. the fire has been burning now for 38 days. it is 35% contained. calfire says it has destroyed 600 homes. larry: smoke from the wildfires in northern california is drifting its way into the bay area. that's giving us hazy skies and some stunning sunsets. beautiful but not good for us as we check in with sandy patel. ama: will we be in spare the air

ama: three of the leading republicans in the recall election debated each other tonight and event put on by --. alto came at the governor they hope to replace. >> gavin newsom wants to make this all about national politics. i want to make it about californians. >> he can't produce electricity, water, protect people from wildfires that are threatening their existence. >> anyone could get ahead but now people can't wait to leave it behind. ama: they laid out their own platforms, centering on overturning vaccine mandates, mast rules, and burdens on california small businesses. larry: larry elder did not attend tonight's debate but he was certainly in the headlines today. facing accusations of making derogatory comments against women.

the issue did not come up during the debate but we caught up with the candidates and they had a lot to say about it. >> it's about standing up for what's right. larry elders's views are wrong. i stood up for working women. working women have the ability to have a career and a family. >> the woman that come forward needs to be heard, as does every person who comes forward. her account should be treated with the utmost seriousness. >> it's reprehensible to treat women in integrating fashion. i haven't done it in my life and i won't do it. i will stand up against it. larry: elder today denied reports where his ex fiance accused him of brandishing a gun during a heated argument the two had in 2015. ama: governor newsom is making his pitch to voters with just over three weeks to go until the recall election. he spoke one-on-one with our anchor. reporter: the recall election in a dead heat. gavin newsom is ramping up his efforts to get out his message.

supportive of california's vaccine mandates. governor newsom is running on the issue, comparing his pandemic policies to those of the republicans looking to replace him. >> they all support eliminating mask mandates in our public schools, eliminating vaccine verifications. larry elder says he will do that day one. i have no interest in taking us off of the covid cliff. reporter: the timing of the delta variant is creating a tricky situation for newsom. you were the first governor to do a stay-at-home order. there are now states that are going further than us with vaccine and mask mandates. many people wonder if you're holding back and acting -- because of the timing of the recall. >> i don't do anything in that respect. we've led consistently. reporter: he kept largely to his talking points, making the case for why he deserves to stay in office. he's gotten advice from former governor arnold's words and acre but he wouldn't say. >> i appreciate his counsel. although former governor's have been helpful throughout the pandemic.
