up. her brand-new album that you heard drop a few hours ago. >> she's getting ready to light up central park with "solar power," her new hit single. it's going to be a great day. we begin with that hurricane watch right after fred wreaked havoc on the east coast now henri is gaining strength and rob is tracking the very latest for us. rob, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, janai. the track of henri has gotten more ominous overnight especially for the northeast and hurricane watch has been posted. let's get to where it is right now. it is tropical storm almost hurricane strength, about 780 miles away from the coastlines of the cape but the track as mentioned will take it north and strengthen. it will cross the gulf stream. that will help intensify it and potentially bring it onshore as a category 1 storm sometime during the day on sunday. long island up through rhode island and all of the southern new england coastline will be under the gun here for wind, surge and rain, hurricane watches have been posted for this area and that means that

hurricane conditions are likely here in the next 48 hours and almost as far back as new york city, we have tropical storm watches, as well. here's one of our forecast models showing you the potential track of this thing somewhere up to narragansett bay, some uncertainty here, but what is striking here is the symmetrical of the storm, meaning that the west side should be as strong as the east side. the amount of rain coming in. we will see flooding. amy, over to you. >> we know you will keep us updated, rob. thank you. now to chaos in afghanistan and the race to evacuate thousands of afghan allies. the white house saying 3,000 more people were evacuated from the country thursday, but kabul airport is still surrounded by people desperate to flee the taliban as the situation grows even more dangerous. ian pannell is in kabul with the latest on all of that. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, amy, good morning. that's right.

a slight improvement in the numbers of people getting through and out of the airport but, unfortunately, it's only a very small improvement. meanwhile, we're starting to see the first signs of popular opposition to taliban rule. this morning, urgent attempts to escape outside the kabul airport. 15,000 americans and up to 60,000 afghans who helped the u.s. desperate to leave the country. one shocking moment as an infant can be seen handed to u.s. troops over the razor wired wall. this as some planes departing with empty seats because people can't get through taliban-run checkpoints on their way to the airport. with more than 5,200 u.s. troops already on the ground at the airport, officials say they're upping efforts to process and evacuate the thousands of americans and afghans who helped the u.s. >> we've got additional officers at the additional gates with additional troops helping the consular officers. >> reporter: officials saying that overnight there were 20 flights lined up to get people

out of the country. with 3,000 evacuations thursday, the united states has rescued approximately 9,000 people since sunday. >> this is absolutely an all hands on deck effort to ensure the safety of our personnel and citizens, rally our allies and partners and organize the evacuation of thousands and thousands of individuals. >> reporter: this as the taliban cracks down on defiance from crowds here who took to the streets of kabul thursday to celebrate the country's day of independence, daring to parade a massive afghan flag through the streets. the taliban breaking up the demonstration with gunfire. the american citizen david fox is stuck in kabul with his wife and child, desperate to leave the country. at one point making it to the airport but getting turned away. >> we decided on the advice of my state department friend to make a run for the airport. i actually got whacked with, you know, with one of these like fan belts for not moving fast enough. >> reporter: it's not just

americans desperate to get out. there are reports that taliban officials are now conducting door-to-door searches for people who worked with u.s. allied forces. abc news has received audio from a human rights lawyer of an afghan military pilot still in the country, pleading for help. we're not using his name for his own safety. >> the situation is getting worse and worse and the taliban is just trying to find us and they were searching for us. they called us and they called me especially that where i am and they told me that anywhere i should go, anywhere i go, they will find me and they will kill me. >> reporter: despite the heartache for many new images of the few who finally made it to safety. these afghans huddled together on a u.s. air base in qatar, an uncertain, but perhaps more peaceful future. well, guys, we've been inundated with heartbreaking messages desperate for help from afghans, american passport holders, many of whom have tried to get to the

airport and have been beaten back by the taliban. what they're using are thick rubber fan belts from vehicles and they're using that to beat a lot of the people, as well as firing weapons in the air. let's just bear a thought for the millions who don't have any kind of escape strategy. they're locked at home indoors living in fear because of the taliban. will? >> bearing a thought, indeed. ian pannell all over what's going on in afghanistan. ian, thank you. criticism is growing over u.s. troops' chaotic exit from afghanistan. reaction pouring in after george's exclusive interview with president biden. stephanie ramos is at the white house with more and, stephanie, the president is expected to speak this afternoon? >> reporter: he is, will. president biden is defending his position, saying this is not the outcome they wanted in afghanistan, but they expected the taliban to take over at some point. this morning, president biden's answers on the chaotic withdrawal from afghanistan now fueling fresh criticism. in his only interview since the

taliban overtook the country, biden telling abc's george stephanopoulos that no one predicted it would happen so quickly. >> back in july you said a taliban takeover was highly unlikely. was the intelligence wrong or did you downplay it? >> i think there was no consensus. if you go back and look at the intelligence reports, they said it was more likely to be more like at the end of the year. >> but you didn't put a time line out when you said it was highly unlikely. you said flat out it's highly unlikely the taliban would take over. >> the idea that the taliban would take over was premised on the notion that the -- that somehow the 300,000 troops we had trained and equipped was going to just collapse. they were going to just give up. i don't think anybody anticipated that. >> reporter: but a source tells abc american officials at the embassy in kabul did warn that afghanistan was on the brink. warning the administration in a mid-july message of the taliban's swift advance and that kabul could fall shortly after the end of august, the deadline the white house set for the drawdown.

a state department spokesperson declined to comment on that message, but said the secretary of state reads every communication of the kind and encourages officials to raise concerns. that source also says the officials urged the state department to begin airlifting afghan allies out immediately but in one month that evacuation effort brought fewer than 2,000 afghans out, leaving tens of thousands frantic for escape. the president has staunchly defended his exit strategy saying turmoil was inevitable. >> you don't think this could have been handled better in any way? no mistakes? >> no, i don't think it could have been handled in a way that -- we're going to go back in hindsight and look but the idea that somehow there was a way to have gotten out without chaos ensuing, i don't know how that happens. >> reporter: republicans slamming that statement. senator tom cotton calling it a

bald-faced lie and congresswoman liz cheney tweeting a truly ignorant and shameful performance by an american president. and in response to some of that criticism white house officials tell me this withdrawal has not been botched raising the point that americans have not lost their lives in this process. the president is expected to address the situation in afghanistan once again later today. amy? >> all right, stephanie ramos there at the white house, thank you. we're going to turn to the latest on the coronavirus emergency and covid news out of washington. three fully vaccinated u.s. senators testing positive and reporting mild symptoms. this comes as some hospitals around the country enter full crisis mode. marcus moore joins us from dallas with the latest on that. good morning to you, marcus. >> reporter: amy, good morning. cases are on the rise and so are hospitalizations and right now in five states in the south, icus are above 90% capacity. this morning, covid hospitalizations hitting their

highest point since january. now nearly 93,000 patients seeking care. the crisis deepening in the south. in alabama, icus are 100% full. >> we are experiencing wait times in the emergency room like we've never seen. they are waiting for hours and sometimes more than 24 hours in the emergency department so that they can move upstairs to get a bed. >> reporter: the number of children hospitalized with covid now at its highest point since the pandemic began. images like these are emerging. a navy medical support team arriving to assist louisiana hospitals where teams are overworked and understaffed. but as help arrives to deal with the influx of covid patients, mask battles are erupting. take care of our children when they are in our care. >> reporter: a quick word on the vaccinations this morning. the white house says on thursday more than a million were administered and greater than half of those were first-time shots. janai, the race to vaccinate still on this morning. >> absolutely, thank you so much, marcus. new details on that bomb scare near capitol hill shutting down the area for hours. the suspect surrendering after pickup truck outside the library of congress. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is live now on capitol hill with the latest. pierre, good morning to you. >> reporter: janai, good morning. it's starting to feel like capitol hill is a magnet for violence. it was a dramatic day of threats involving a suspect whose actions were bordering on bizarre. the suspect identified as 49-year-old floyd ray roseberry claimed he had enough bombs to blow up two city blocks. that led to an army of law enforcement officials including snipers and bomb squads and the evacuation of the supreme court and the library of congress. roseberry was streaming the

incident live and authorities could see a rusty container which he claimed contained black powder and that he was holding something that looked like a detonator. after rambling about president biden with no clear motive, roseberry eventually gave up after police provided him with a cell phone using a robot. they later discovered that he did not have a bomb but are still assessing whether he had bombmaking components, janai. >> really interesting point that capitol hill is starting to feel like a magnet for violence. this comes at a particularly tense moment for law enforcement. >> reporter: that's right. in the wake of the insurrection there's a high concern for the potetial of domestic terror because of anger about the last election and the pandemic. police are also worried about al qaeda and isis and how afghanistan may impact the current threat environment. a new homeland security bulletin from last week described a very scary situation. >> pierre, thank you so much. will, over to you. janai, turning to the big box office backtrack in

investigation after her employee filed a complaint with the police. the pop star already embroiled in a contentious conservatorship battle and now faces this new fight. kaylee hartung is in los angeles with more on that. good morning, kaylee. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, amy. the spotlight is bright on britney spears right now even if she's nowhere near a stage. authorities won't go into details about the nature of the fight that led someone would works for her to call for help and allege that britney hit her but law enforcement is investigating. this morning, britney spears center stage in a new battle. the pop star now under investigation for alleged battery. >> there was a dispute between miss spears and one of her employees and the employee alleges that during that dispute ms. spears struck her. >> reporter: the ventura county sheriff's department confirming deputies responded to the singer's home monday morning after receiving a call from someone who works there telling abc news the employee wasn't injured. ♪ you wanna piece of me ♪ >> reporter: the altercation first reported by tmz detailing britney allegedly slapped a longtime housekeeper's phone out of her hand. >> this was not an emergency response? >> no, there was no active physical engagement going on at the point that she called.

>> reporter: britney's attorney calling the story overblown sensational tabloid fodder. the former federal prosecutor telling abc news it's nothing more than a he said/she said regarding a cell phone with no striking and obviously no injury whatsoever. anyone can make an accusation, but this should have been closed immediately. >> this came out because of who she is, but in the grand scheme of things it's extremely minor. >> reporter: britney posting this photo to her instagram just as the news broke writing she obviously wants privacy. this just days after the 39-year-old got a big win in her fight to gain freedom from her father's control. jamie spears agreeing to step down as conservator as part of an orderly transition, when certain conditions are met. >> if law enforcement didn't see injury, all they can do is go on the word of their complaining witness and i don't see that impacting the conservatorship proceedings at all. if through an investigation more facts come to light and, you know, we learn more about this, hypothetically it could impact

coast. this morning, tropical storm henri may be offshore but the storm is creating a major rip current threat from florida all the way up to maine. essentially the entire east coast may face life-threatening rip currents at beaches this weekend. rip currents are serious, killing more than 100 people every year in america. just this week in north carolina, a family of three caught off guard by a rip current. bystanders only able to pull one of the members safely to shore. in michigan a case of right place, right time when a surfer was able to save three swimmers including an elderly woman from a rip current in lake michigan. >> i had her head on me and later the line on the life ring. somebody came out on a board to help and i said, yeah,

grab this line and we're all going to kick to try to get these people moving south out of the rip current. >> reporter: here's what happens, when waves break fiercely at the shore, a stream of water moving away from the beach can form taking a swimmer with it. that's where the rip current is so we're going in. >> reporter: back in 2014 i teamed up with the ocean rescue team in ft. lauderdale, florida. with lifeguards nearby i went right into a rip current. wave. watch what happens when i intentionally try to swim back to shore directly against the current. >> that's hard. that's hard. >> reporter: the lifeguards see i'm tired and don't take any chances. >> give me your left hand. >> you feel yourself getting tired. you feel your heart racing. >> definitely. >> especially with all those waves, all that water hitting you and swallowing that water. >> it's disorienting. >> reporter: to show you the right technique i go right back in. >> instead of swimming to shore we'll swim diagonally. in a rip current, experts say it's best to swim parallel to shore. and back out here live at jones beach in new york, experts
