8:15 am
this piece with "people" magazine was really looking back on the lessons learned over the past 18 months for the sussexes. we saw them really take that giant leap to speak up for what was important for them. putting their family first, putting their mental health first and as we heard in that oprah interview they really went through a lot to get to that point and now they're at a point where they're able to look back and reflect and feel like it was all worth it. that's what's been fun about updating the book, drawing a line under everything that's happened in the past and looking very much forward into the future. >> during that sit-down with oprah back in march, the couple opened up about their love and respect for her majesty the queen. what's the latest on that relationship with the queen? >> well, dan, i'm so glad you asked that because, of course, we did release some details from the book this week and, of course, the british tabloids did what they did best, took a centimeter and ran a mile in the opposite direction with it. we, of course -- i spoke to sources close to the couple who spoke about their disappointment in the institution of the monarchy and sort of lack of accountability taken after some of the revelations that they
8:16 am
made in the oprah interview particularly when it came to the racism claims. but when it comes to that relationship with the queen it is as strong as ever. they have nothing but love for her. we saw them name their daughter after the queen's very nickname so that gives us an insight into the close relationship and it's great to be able to put that right today. >> and as you know there's been so much to be made about this, this royal rift within the family. so how are their family relationships with other royals at the moment right now? >> well, updating the book i did get to speak with sources that had spoken to us throughout the journey about those family relations and unfortunately because of the little amount of time the sussexes have really been able to spend in the uk -- you know, meghan hasn't returned since they stepped away, very little progress has been made when it comes to improving those relations with prince charles and with prince william. we know between the brothers they are keeping it cordial at the moment.
8:17 am
that door is still open. it's not shut. but there hasn't been much progress there. i think time still needs to do its job on that front. but, you know, there is a respect on both sides. i think when i spoke with kensington palace sources recently close to the cambridges they said they understand that the sussexes are doing their own thing now and i think that sort of resentment we saw perhaps in the past or heard about from sources has kind of started to dissipate and that leaves a platform to hopefully improve those relationships moving forward. >> so what's next for the couple? we hear they have a lot in the works. >> yeah, one of those lessons learned by the couple was it's okay to slow down. you know, we saw them jump from one big project to the next, especially when they moved over to the u.s. but they're on parental leave enjoying that important family time from home, but we are about to enter a very busy period for the couple when they do return to work. we'll see those first projects from spotify, the netflix

projects coming out and, of course, their own work with their charitable organization. that's something they want to be on the ground for. we know they're at their best when interacting with people on those special engagements. because of the pandemic we haven't seen much of them for that reason and so this is finally going to be a chance to see them showing us what they're doing in the u.s. and why that move was so important for them. >> all right, omid, thank you so much for your insight on all of this. of course, for more on this story pick up this week's edition of "people" on newsstands right now. >> omid will be back on "gma" monday, august 31st to spill the tea on the new chapter of his book, all about harry and meghan called "finding freedom." let's switch gears and check in with rob and the weather. hey, rob, how are you doing? >> reporter: hi, eva. i saw whit's post of him wakeboarding in hawaii on his trip. looked good, bud. nice work. made me think of surfing. let's go to the outer banks and show you this surfline camera. this will miss you, outer banks for a change.

these guys earlier. i want to hear about your recipe. >> so how are you doing? so basically our recipe, it's a tomato stew, right, that gets spiked with a lot of spices and k r a tn we garlic and you let crack some eggs into it, nice runny eggs and it's just a really spicy comforting breakfast dish. so let me show you guys what is going on here. chili flake, we have some tomato paste, we have fresh chilies with the seeds. if you don't like it too spicy, remove the seeds, i like it spicy. a lot of sliced garlic, our house made harissa, a moroccan chili paste we make here. basically toasted chilies, toasted spices, garlic and olive oil and that's the key ingredient that makes the shakshuka unique and kind of --

it's a staple sauce that we use a lot. we have a little tomato juice and we have some pureed fresh overripe tomatoes. you could easily use canned tomatoes if you didn't have fresh. i would just make sure to go for the good quality stuff. so the first thing we'll do, we'll get cooking here, this is looking to be a little hot so we'll turn that down. we'll get a little olive oil and we're going to take the garlic and we're basically going to make a chili garlic oil and once things start to get fragrant and it's permeating the air, that's kind of a sign to move on to the next step. we're basically layering flavors is essentially what we're doing. it's not one of those recipes where you throw everything in the pot, walk away and it's done. you kind of have to baby-sit it a little bit. this is making me feel a little short right now.
8:52 am
we'll move them around and let them sweat. the next thing we'll do, again, we're building a foundation of flavor for the tomato and add the paste. and we're going to toast that a little bit. and, again, getting everything nice and caramelized. then we'll go in with our harissa. getting pretty spicy in here. so we'll cook that down a little bit. and, you know, you basically want everything to be nicely sweated, smells good and then that's when you know that you're ready for the tomato product. so we'll take our tomato juice. >> if you could show us the finished product. we're starting to run out of time. we want to know how you stick those eggs in there as well. that's kind of the key to this. >> for sure. so what we have is -- we're going to cook it in this pan and we'll also serve it in the pan
