available in one bay area community. thank you for joining us. you are watching abc 7 news at 5:00, live on abc seven, hulu live, and wherever you stream. one of the first covid-19 booster shot clinics in the bay area was happening today in the north bay. the third dose was for marin county residents who are considered immunocompromised. cornell barnard tells us with the delta variant on the rise, there -- it is something many with health concerns have been waiting for. >> the line was long outside the marin center for this booster shot clinic, one of the first in the bay area. this 82-year-old got here eayeag >> i wanted to get a third one, to be free, to start moving, and i appreciate what my county is doing. >> these are people particularly vulnerable to covid. >> booster shots were available

to county residents who are immunocompromised. >> the reason we are hosting this clinic is we want to make the third dose accessible to those who really need it. >> julie from novato made the appointment the minute she heard about the clinic. >> because of going through cancer treatment, it was important to me to have the booster shot. reporter: dr. ginny calls the third shot -- daughter jenny calls the third shot a godsend. >> it is one more thing that will help keep her safe. reporter: with the delta variant on the rise, many people say they have been afraid to even go out. >> you do not know how safe you are. there are a lot of factors that make me feel i need to do more to protect myself. reporter: right now, the cdc recommends only people with compromised immune systems get the booster shot, but the county

could provide them to the general public as soon as next month, pending fda approval. >> we are planning for mass vaccination when that occurs. reporter: for many, the booster is extra confidence in a world where the pandemic is far from over. >> i feel a little bit safer. j.r.: an event today to help kids get ready for the return to the classroom, including free haircuts, backpacks, covid shots. anyone 12 and older was eligible for the vaccine, with their parents' permission, of course. >> we want everyone to get vaccinated. we know the pandemic is getting out of hand. we know the delta variant is out, but we have an answer to . we are encouraging everyone to come out. we are putting love in this community. we are all in this together.

back into being the beautiful state it was. j.r.: recall supporters held a rally at carl larson park. those who supported governor newsom held a counter rally across the street. >> this recall effort is a republican-led record by extreme right wing folks. it would be a disaster in our state's continued efforts to nago the war against covid-19. j.r.: recall supporters have another rally tomorrow in santa clara. for those confused over the recall election and what to do with your ballot, liz kreutz sorts it all out. liz: so you have your recall ballot, and i you want to know, how do i fill it out? your ballot is asking two questions -- should the governor be written removed from office, and who will replace him if he is recalled? yes means he should be recalled.

no means you want him to stay. whether you pick yes or no, you can then pick the candidate you would like to see replace him. however, the candidate will only become the governor if newsom is removed from office. that will only happen if 50% of ballots cast are yes votes. if less than 50% are yes votes, the governor will keep his job. you do not have to return your vote by mail. you can vote on election day. if you decide to mail it, your ballot must be postmarked by september 14 to be counted. j.r.: developing news, firefighters are concerned about high winds fanning the caliber fire in el dorado county. the fire has scorched more than 82,000 acres. there is no containment yet. highway 50 between the bay area and south lake tahoe is closed in both directions between pollock pines and myers. caltrans is worried about fire

debris blowing onto the highway. cdp says the closure is likely to last through the weekend. the gigantic dixie fire has now burned over 714,000 acres. calfire says favorable weather conditions have helped firefighters make good progress on suppression efforts, but as windy weather returns to northern california, calfire expects conditions to pose a new challenge for fire crews. mandatory evacuations remain in effect. the dixie fire has swept through five counties and destroyed and 600 homes since july 14. containment is at 35%. a chaotic scene in kabul as americans rush to get out of the country after the taliban seized control. abc news reporter elizabeth chelsea tells us those who are stuck fear for their lives. reporter: the u.s. embassy in afghanistan is advising

americans to avoid traveling to the kabul airport without individual instructions from a u.s. representative, citing potential security threats outside the airport gates. >> we have said from the beginning of this that we are going to try to do this in a safe and orderly way, and that means making sure that nobody gets hurt, and to the maximum extent possible. reporter: the warning comes one day after president biden made this promise. pres. biden: any american who wants to come home, we will get you home. reporter: the president acknowledged the dangers american troops now face in the violent scenes on the streets of kabul. pres. biden: we have seen images of panicked people acting out of sheer desperation. reporter: this image shows american troops having a baby over razor wire. the baby has been reunited with his father at the airport. and this young girl, begging to be let in.

u.s. citizen david fox is stuck in kabul with his wife and child, turned away after reaching the airport. >> the airport is very dangerous, so the taliban forces at these big rubber bands that i think are called motor fan belts. i actually got whacked with one of these fan belts for not moving fast enough. reporter: evacuation flights were paused for eight hours yesterday after the facility in qatar reached capacity. the pentagon passengers departed on saturday. flights once again are headed to qatar and other destinations. three flights arrived in washington, d.c., friday night, carrying afghans headed to fort bliss in texas. j.r.: heartbreaking images there. a mystery on a hiking trail. an entire family, including their dog, are found dead near

j.r.: new developments in the mysterious deaths of a northern california family and their dog in the sierra national forest. investigators are looking into whether toxic algae blooms may have played a role. a husband, a wife, their

one-year-old daughter, and a dog were found on a remote hiking trail tuesday in mariposa county. there were no signs of trauma or a suicide note. the area is near a mining site, so investigators looked into whether toxic cases are to blame or gases are to blame, but that has been ruled out. we are learning more about a family stuck on a boat in the delta for two days. a total of four people will rescued on thursday. skewers tell us a family of three was on a boat that had mechanical problems. a family friend on a separate boat came out to help them and also got stuck. crews say rescues in the area are not uncommon. >> the mud in the delta is very unforgiving, so both typically get stuck quite a bit. we launch a boat on average once a month just to assist people who are stuck. j.r.: fire crews say the family had no food. no one needed medical treatment.

j.r.: former president was honored in san jose today. in january, the city council voted to create barack obama boulevard from sections of several local streets. dozens walked the newly named boulevard to celebrate the official dedication at the sap center. >> this street boulevard, is going to be that message, yes, it is possible for everyone to come together. j.r.: the new limited stretch stretch is about half a mile. supporters raised $11,000 to change the three signs. it took four years to complete the project. we are joined by meteorologist drew tuma, the man of the hour. when will this talk go away when it comes to all the smoke? drew: you woke up today and it was either foggy or hazy where

you live. we are starting to see fresh air work into the bay area. tomorrow the air quality is going to improve. there is lots of smoke across california. live look from walnut creek. you do see hayes in the atmosphere. we have moderate air quality inland. if you are not seeing hazy skies, you are dealing with fog and low clouds. a lot of fog this morning. marine layer is deep, about 3000 feet, so clouds were very slow to break down, if not all. the city was stuck in cloud cover for much of the day, and that created a cooling effect when it comes to daytime temperatures across the region. this morning we had moderate air quality across the entire region . now we are seeing green dots, fresh air moving into parts of the bay area. where the worst air quality is at the moment, very close to the calder fire near south lake tahoe. air quality was everywhere from unhealthy to very unhealthy, and it likely is not going to change around lake tahoe as the fire

continues to burn, so we will find that unhealthy air quality sitting there for the next several days. back at home, a different story -- the breeze continues to kick in this evening. a lot of the smoke is going to get pushed to the east, improving air quality overnight. tomorrow we are in between good and moderate air quality. we will notice a difference when you are outside. you can breathe easier sunday, and even monday we are forecasting good air quality across the boards. tomorrow is a transition day, a fluctuation between good and moderate for the second half of the weekend. monday, it is fresh air to matter where you are, good air quality across the bay area. with the slope cloud cover to break down this morning, look at these numbers. 68 in oakland, 76 in 62 in the city. overnight, the marine layer is deep.
