joining us. i have j.r. stone. you are watching abc 7 news at 6:00. one of the first covid-19 booster shot clinics in the bay area it was happening today in the north bay. the third dose was fort marin county residents considered immunocompromised cornell barnard tells us with the delta variant on the rise something many with health concerns have been waiting for. reporter: the line was long outside the center for this one day free covid-19 booster shot clinic, one of the first in the bay area. this 82-year-old got here early. >> i want to to to to to and i appreciate what my doctor is doing. >> these are people vulnerable to covid-19. reporter: pfizer or moderna vaccine booster shots were

available to county residents who are immunocompromised. >> the reason we are hosting this clinic is we want to make this third dose easily accessible to those who really need it, those who have weakened immune systems. reporter: julie made an appointment the moment she heard about the clinic. >> because of going to cancer treatment it was important to me to have the booster shot. reporter: the daughter because the third shot a godsend. >> she has fought so long and hard for us and it is one more thing that will keep her safe. reporter: 1300 folks are getting booster shots today. with the delta variant it on the rise many people say they are afraid to even go out. >> you do not know how safe you are. it makes me feel like i need to do more to prevent myself. reporter: for now the cdc recommends only people with compromised immune systems get a booster shot, but the county could provide them to the

general public as soon as next month pending fda approval. >> we are starting our planning when it occurs. reporter: for many of the booster is extra confidence in a world by the pandemic is far from over. >> i feel safer. j.r.: an event today to help kids get ready for the return to the classroom, including free haircuts, backpacks, and covid shots. anyone 12 and older was eligible for the vaccine with their parent's permission. kaiser was a partner with glad tidings international church in haywood. >> we want everyone to get vaccinated. the pandemic is getting out of hand, the delta variant it's -- variant is out, so we are encouraging everyone to come out. we are putting love in this community. we are in this together. j.r.: 25 dollars gift cards were available for those who got

newsom is removed from office. that will only happen if more than 50% of ballots cast are yes votes. if more than 50% are no votes the governor will keep his job. you do not have to return it by mail. you can vote at a polling place or drop it off on or before election day. if you decide to mail it it must be postmarked by september 14 two county. j.r.: developing news, firefighters are concerned about high wind fanning the destructive fire burning in el dorado county. it has scorched more than 82,000 acres. there is no containment yet. the highway in south lake tahoe is closed in both directions. caltrans is worried about fire debris blowing on the highway. chp it says the closure is likely to last through the weekend.

the gigantic dixie fire has burned over 714,000 acres. favorable weather conditions as help to firefighters make good progress on suppression efforts, but as windy weather returns to northern california calfire expects to conditions to post a new challenge for fire crews. mandatory evacuations remain in effect. the dixie fire as one through five counties and destroyed more than 600 homes since july 14. containment is at 35%. a chaotic scene in kabul as americans rushed to get out of the country after the taliban seized control. elizabeth shelti tells us those who are stuck feel for their lives. reporter: the u.s. embassy is advising americans to avoid traveling to that kabul airport without individual instructions from a u.s. government representative citing potential security threats outside airport

mysterious deaths of a northern california family and their dog in the sierra national forest. investigators are looking into whether toxic algae blooms may have played a role. a husband, wife, their one-year-old daughter and the dog were found on the remote hiking trail on tuesday in mariposa county. there was no sign of trauma, nor was there a suicide note. the area is near a mining so investigators could look into whether toxic gases are to blame but that is mineral will that. we are looking more -- in learning more about the rescue of family stuck in the delta. they rescued a total of four people on thursday. rescuers told us a family of three was on the boat that had mechanical problems. a family friend on a separate boat came up to help them and also got stuck. crews say rescues in the area are not uncommon. >> the delta iselta iselta isela

j.r.: welcome back. former president barack obama was honored in san jose today. back in january the city council voted to create barack obama boulevard from sections of several local streets. it doesn't do people walked the newly named boulevard to celebrate the official dedication at the sap center. >> barack obama boulevard is going to be that message, yes, it is possible. j.r.: the newly minted street stretches about .50 of one mile. supporters raised more than $11,000 to change the street signs. it took four years to complete the project. we are joined at right now by meteorologist drew tuma. drew: we started out with a fair amount of smoke in our atmosphere, moderate to unhealthy air quality across

northern california, but fresh air is on the way. a live look, we have got a couple of things going on, the marine layer is deep right now, 3000 feet, which helps to keep temperatures on the poolside this afternoon. you do not see baby blue skies right now. haze continues to send over much of the area. a big portion of us are centering -- sitting in the moderate air quality with smoke elevated above many of our cities. we find the onshore breeze strengthening this evening that will help to bring in fresh air. some of the worst hit areas around lake tahoe, air quality currently anywhere from unhealthy to very unhealthy at this hour. you see the onshore breeze going to kick in overnight tonight that will help to push some of the smoke out of our atmosphere, and tomorrow we find haze in the
