thousands of people will be hard and painful no matter when it started, when we began it. there is no way to evacuate this many people without pain and loss of heartbreaking images you see on television. elizabeth: tens of thousands desperate. the embassy advising u.s. citizens and afghanistan to avoid the airport altogether. and seek shelter unless they have individual instructions from the u.s. government representative. >> we're going to look at every means possible to get american citizens, third country nationals, special immigrant visa applicants into the airfield. elizabeth: the united states has agreements with 26 countries on four continents to accept evacuees. >> in the last 24 hours, the united states alone flew out 3900 people on military aircraft. and our partners with flights we facilitated flew out 3900 people for a total of 7500 people.

elizabeth: the pentagon activating a civil reserve air flu program, compelling commercial -- airlines to provide aircraft. >> we need more planes to move them from the initial points of landing on to the places they will ultimately resettle. elizabeth: several airlines announcing they have partnered with the department of defense. scott mann is part of task force pineapple, a group of veterans using connections to help allies get to safety. >> i 'm sitting here now because of some actions that afghan friends took years ago. i'm still here. now it is our turn. julian: more on: more on: more n evacuations. a veteran of the bay area successfully helping his former translator flee afghanistan. we spoke to both men about the dramatic escape. it's a story will only see on abc 7 news. >> i didn't think i would be

able to make it back to the states without losing my head. >> jay is talking about his terrifying escape from afghanistan back to the bay area. we've agreed to protect his identity because he fears for his family safety and retaliation from the taliban. jay is a former u.s. military interpreter who traveled to kabul weeks ago to help his family but got trapped. >> a total disaster. >> kaubul a city in chaos. jay made several attempts to get to the airport but the taliban made that almost impossible. >> when they were stepped on, people were and this is that i would never forget in my life. >> when he finally reached the airport, he was met by armed security guards. >> i was surprised they had that force out four times. i had to sit down. on my visa, my green card with

to the pfizer vaccine as early as tomorrow. more than 973,000 received vaccine doses yesterday in the u.s. after three straight days of more than one million doses being administered. this week, the venetia city council will consider reinstating a mask mandate there. solano county is the only county not currently requiring mask indoors. this include unvaccinated and vaccinated people. the 49ers are playing the chargers in l.a. today and there was a special offer for fans who attended. get a vaccine and get a ticket. the state and l.a. county set up a mobile vaccination clinic right outside of sophia stadium. pfizer and johnson & johnson shots were offered. >> is just a part of being human. so they something. giving out gifts and merch, if you may, is really encouraging

people to get vaccinated. julian: people love free stuff, too. no word on how may people took advantage of the offer but the camera did catch a few people getting shot. new details on the largest fire burning in the state. we're talking about the dixie fire. some of actuation orders have been downgraded to warnings. the fire has charged 112 square miles. 16,000 buildings are being threatened while 1200 structures were destroyed. the fire has been burning for 39 days in five counties northeast of chico. the caldor fire is still grow and there is no containment. 98,000 acres have been burned in el dorado county. thousand remained evacuated from the fire that started a week ago. 328 structures had been destroyed. the fire jumped highway 50 yesterday. >> this was one of the control

points. it does raise concerns. >> the fields are thick, primed to burned. juliaan: calfire says the closure of highway 50 happened just in time, making the spot fire across the highway a priority and they are focused on protecting structures at this point. wildfires forcing more closures across much of northern california, including nine national forests. all u.s. forest services, beaches and campgrounds in like tahoe are off limits. lake tahoe still open and the closure does not impact areas operated by the city, county and state. the closures include the mendocino national forest and shasta trinity. people who violate those orders can face fines of $5,000. there is a lot happening with these wildfires. you can get updates on everything concerning the fires

julian: rescue crews are searching for dozens of people missing after severe flooding in tennessee. 22 people have been killed and authorities fear that number could rise. the northeast is also reeling from severe weather. tropical storm henri battered the region with heavy winds and heavy rain, too. the storm made landfall in rhode island earlier today, knocking out power to thousands across the state as well as neighboring connecticut. power should be returned to most customers by midweek. president biden has approved state of emergency declarations in new york, connecticut, and rhode island. five teenagers were rescued after getting into some trouble on a cliffside near muir beach. >> the second survivor. good. julian: a coast guard helicopter arrived around 9 p.m. last night to help three people stranded on a cliff face. two other people were rescued from the top of the cliff. a group of teenagers were

barbecuing on the beach and some of them decided to climb a 400 foot cliff. we talked to one of the young man and he said it was one of the stupidest things he has ever done. >> there was a point where it was just probably a 50 degree angle and i grabbed a rock. i came down, falling on the cliffside. julian: thankfully the coast guard got there in time. the cliff operations are risky and they are glad the conditions last night allowed them to save these young men. more than 4000 salmon in california have a new home at a high school in the north bay. the move that gives them new meaning to the term school of fish. drew: i'm meteorologist drew tuma. better air quality today. we will look at the air quality forecast over the next couple days coming up in the

julian: assist hatchery -- a fish hatchery has relocated some of its stock. thousands of salmon have been removed to apollo high school. the department of fish and wire life-size rising water temperatures at the hatchery have increased the risk of heat stress. salmon are endangered so experts say moving them was necessary to help save the species. the fish are now at a student run conservation facility at costa frgrant high school. we check in with meteorologist drew tuma. we can finally breathe the air outside comfortably. drew: a big difference compared to this time yesterday. yesterday we had a lot of haze, elevated smoke. today, thanks to some wind, we have cleared out the smoke and we are breathing easier on the sunday afternoon. the exploratory in camera. live look outside, calm bay wate rs.

lure scott compared to yesterday and we have that elevated smoke out of here and that means air quality has been approved. look at the dots across the region, most of us breathing good air quality at this hour. we have a few issues where the air quality is anywhere from moderate to unhealthyfor sensitive groups but we are-- where the biggest issue is right now is really around lake tahoe where the smoke is sitting over lake tahoe. very unhealthy air quality at this hour. let's sho you this mor -- the smoke for casper tomorrow more votes will be in the moderate category when it comes to air quality and then we will find of a fresh breeze on tuesday. tomorrow you will notice more smoke in the atmosphere. but all in all, air quality between good and moderate. the next two days, the biggest issues closer where the fires are, the inland east bay, moderate air quality tomorrow and tuesday, good air quality the further south you are in the bay area.

breaking news as we come on the air, tropical storm henri slams the northeast, the first to directly hit new england in 15 years. the storm making landfall near westerly, rhode island, today bringing wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and 19-foot waves. flooding and power outages in new york, new jersey all the way up to massachusetts. transformers on fire. nearly 250 nursing home residents evacuated from four facilities. governors in connecticut and rhode island telling people to shelter in place. amtrak suspending service between new york and boston. more than 2,000 flights canceled or delayed. rob marciano tracking the storm. also developing tonight, catastrophic flooding in tennessee. the death toll there rising. at least 22 people dead including two 7-month-old twins.
