we thank you for joining us this evening. i'm julian glover. you're abc 7 news watching live on hulu live and wherever you stream. we begin in afghanistan the president left open the possibility of keeping u.s. troops in afghanistan beyond the august 31st withdrawal deadline. we explain the effort to get people out of the country is now expanding. elizabeth: as the chaos continues to unfold outside the airport, president biden once again addressing the nation. pres. biden: the evacuation from thousands of people will be hard and painful no matter when it started, when we began it. there is no way to evacuate this many people without pain and loss of heartbreaking images you see on television. elizabeth: tens of thousands desperate. the embassy advising u.s. citizens and afghanistan to avoid the airport altogether. and seek shelter unless they have individual instructions from the u.s. government

representative. >> we're going to look at every means possible to get american citizens, third country nationals, special immigrant visa applicants into the airfield. elizabeth: the united states has agreements with 26 countries on four continents to accept evacuees. >> in the last 24 hours, the united states alone flew out 3900 people on military aircraft. and our partners with flights we facilitated flew out 3900 people for a total of 7500 people. elizabeth: the pentagon activating a civil reserve air flight program, compelling commercial -- airlines to provide aircraft. >> we need more planes to move them from the initial points of landing on to the places they will ultimately resettle. elizabeth: several airlines announcing they have partnered with the department of defense. scott mann is part of task force

pineapple, a group of veterans using connections to help allies get to safety. >> i'm sitting here now because of some actions that afghan friends took years ago. i'm still here. now it is our turn. julian: a veteran in the bay area helping his translator flee from afghanistan. we spoke to both men about the dramatic escape. it's a story will only see on abc 7 news. >> i didn't think i would be able to make it back to the states without losing my head. >> jay is talking about his terrifying escape from afghanistan back to the bay area. we've agreed to protect his identity because he fears for his family safety and retaliation from the taliban. jay is a former u.s. military interpreter who traveled to kabul weeks ago to help his family but got trapped.

>> a total disaster. >> kabul city in chaos. jay made several attempts to get to the airport but the taliban made that almost impossible. >> when they were stepped on, people were and this is that i would never forget in my life. >> when he finally reached the airport, he was met by armed security guards. >> i was surprised they had that force out four times. i had to sit down. on my visa, my green card with my passport up, see me? an interpreter who we consider family. i refer to him as my brother. >> a retired marine lieutenant colonel is jay's friends who served in afghanistan helping local governments and training militia. that effort now unraveling. >> people are desperate. it's just a sea of chaos. seeing the fear, confusion, and just utter helplessness and

despair in the afghan people who deserve so much better. >> hudson has been working to help jay and others. overnight success. jay made it safely to washington, d.c. he hopes to get his mother and other relatives out of the country soon. >> the only thing i'm thinking about right now is to make sure to get my family out of their safe. -- out of there safe. julian: about 100 people turned out in oakland for a rally supporting afghan refugees. the group afghans for a better tomorrow gathered at the lake muir amphitheater calling on the u.s. to keep the doors open for those fleeing afghanistan. >> i would love to see united states make a more active role in cleaning up this mess, an open-door refugee policy, expediting special immigrant visas. and ensuring the kabul airport stays open so that the majority

indoors. this include unvaccinated and vaccinated people. the 49ers are playing the chargers in l.a. today and there was a special offer for fans who attended. get a vaccine and get a ticket. the state and l.a. county set up a mobile vaccination clinic right outside of sophia stadium. -- outside of so-fi stadium. pfizer and johnson & johnson shots were offered. >> is just a part of being human. so they are more motivated to do something. giving out gifts and merch, if you may, is really encouraging people to get vaccinated. julian: our camera did catch a few people getting their shots. new details on the largest fire burning in the state. we're talking about the dixie fire. some of actuation orders have been downgraded to warnings. the fire has charged 127,000 -- has charred 127,000 square

miles. 16,000 buildings are being threatened while 1200 structures were destroyed. the fire has been burning for 39 days in five counties northeast of chico. the caldor fire is still grow and there is no containment. 98,000 acres have been burned in el dorado county. thousands remained evacuated from the fire that started a week ago. 328 structures had been destroyed. the fire jumped highway 50 yesterday. >> this was one of the control points. it does raise concerns. >> the fields are thick, primed to burned. julian: more than 40 miles of highway 50 is closed right now. calfire says the closure of highway 50 happened just in time, making the spot fire across the highway a priority and they are focused on protecting structures at this point. wildfires forcing more closures across much of northern

stranded on a cliff face. two people were rescued from the top of the cliff. a group of teenagers were barbecuing on the beach and some of them decided to climb a 400 foot cliff. we talked to one of the young man who was rescued and he said it was one of the stupidest things he has ever done. >> there was a point where was just probably a 50 degree angle. i was falling on the cliffside. julian: the coast guard says cliff operations are risky. they are glad the conditions last night allow them to save these lives. more than 4000 salmon have a new home. now at a high school in the north bay. we'll tell you about the move that gives new meaning to the term school of fish. we're taking a live look outside right now. the work week will start off cooler than average for august. meteorologist drew tuma is up next with the accuweather forecast. chris: sunday found at the

relocated some of its stock. thousands of juvenile salmon have moved to a high school. the department of fish and wildlife says rising water temperatures at the hatchery has increased the risk of pathogen outbreaks. these salmon are endangered so experts say moving that was necessary to help save the species. the fisher at the student run conservation facility at casagrande high school. an oakland man got a chance to relive his favorite pastime on the san francisco bay. we were there at the port as david walton set sail. a resident at a senior living community. they have a living the dream community that allows residents to experience a day in their past. walton has spent many years sailing around greece. he was excited about the opportunity to get back on the water. >> at has been a lovely, lovely day. i woke up this morning having no

smoke. today, we're breathing easier as our air quality has improved. current conditions across the border. most of us are in the good green category. we have issues around -- in the moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups but in onshore breeze is really helping to bring fresh air locally. however, we still have a lot of issues around lake tahoe. smoke from the calder fire is sitting a row for the lake -- si tting over the lake. very unhealthy air quality there and it looks like it will stay that way the next one for hours. here is the smoke forecast. i do anticipate more elevated smoke in our sky tomorrow. our air quality will fluctuate between good and moderate on monday and similar on tuesday. even though we have that onshore breeze, there is a lot of smoke. it will be hard to push it all out of here. air quality both monday and tuesday, you can see the closer

you are to those wildfires in northern california -- that moderate air quality the farther south you go, good air quality. here's an onshore breeze stronger today compared to yesterday. 25 miles an hour in the city. 17 that wind in napa. that onshore breeze in the morning fog helping to keep temperatures on the cool side this afternoon. widespread 60's and 70's for a lot of us now. 69 in. santa rosa all in all, a comfortable evening out there. over tonight -- our marine layer is expanding. widespread low cloud cover fog first thing. mid-50's to start the day on monday. we'll timeout the fog. 7:00 a.m., gray skies for a lot of us. through the late morning, the fog will slowly pull back. that will slow the warming tomorrow morning by 11 a.m. mainly sitting in the 50's and 60's for a lot of us and that

some fleeting works of art add color outside of the pleasant hill shopping center. 20 local artists took part in a chalk festival creating life-size murals on the pavement. cool. they used hundred of sticks of chalk to create a wide range of designs. children were also invited to create their own little masterpieces. the exhibit will continue until nature takes its course and the chalk art fades on away. thank you for being with us. i am julian glover. see you back here tonight
