after rain caused a creek to overflows it banks. seven month old twins were among the dead, swept out of the father's arms. the disaster unfolded 75 miles west of nashville. >> reporter: a desperate rescue operation. >> houses are washed away, knocked off foundations, totally gone. still people missing. a lot of cars are smashed up. >> reporter: 17 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours, sending flooding racing through communities. these images showing a car buried in gravel as the sheriff looks for the vin number in hopes of identifying a body found nearby. rescuers expect the death toll will climb. >> i would expect given the

henri back to thet where it came from. somethat rain will pushin back towards new york city, connecticut, where it has been raining for the last 24 to 36 hours. >> reporter: on sunday henri becoming the first tropical storm to make landfall in new england in 15 years, slamming the coast of rhode island with wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. this tree nearly hitting two homes. >> he said it fell down. i thought he was lying. i couldn't believe it. i couldn't believe it didn't hit anything. >> reporter: cameras captured the wind knocking over this man. >> i tried to take cover and a gust must have taken me out. >> reporter: more than 100,000 power outages were reported across the northeast. farther south areas of central

new jersey were had over eight s of rain. this boat went over a dam. in new jersey, about 150 people had to be rescued by boat as floodwaters consumed homes. >> my backyard turned into a lake. it was a normal backyard. as you can see you can put your kayak in here and kayak through it. >> new york city saws it wettest hour on record because of henri. officials in new england are racing to restore power so vulnerable senior citizens have air conditioning when the heat returns this week. >> and now to the growing crisis in afghanistan. american officials say u.s. troops will likely stay one week past the evacuation deadline. at least 20 people have died in the area including a
