takes for joining us. -- thanks for joining us. ama: it was a chaotic evening for councilmembers. >> ama, chaotic and long. now, we wait for additional direction from the city, including a timeline. council voted unanimously just after 8:15 tonight on this proposal. it is unclear when it will take effect. >> we are not going to proceed until everybody is masked. >> the moment dozens of protesters, many unmasked, began shouting at san jose city council members. tuesday's meeting was suspended for about an hour. the city unanimously voted to approve a proposal for a proof of vaccination mandate. anyone attending events with 50 or more people at city on facilities must show proof of vaccination. >> people should have freedom of choice about what they want to do with their medical decisions, and that's coercion. >> to clarify, the city is not requiring people be vaccinated,

only that they are able to provide proof when attending gatherings inside venues like the sap center, convention center and more. protesters gathered outside and inside city hall. those we spoke with shock to see san jose police officers respond. >> citizens are getting fed up and that's what you see. all of a sudden, you immediately goi into all the cops coming in. >> the mayor addressing tuesday's heated confrontation, saying he expected pushback from the public. >> that should not change our fundamental posture, which is, we've got to follow the data, follow the sides, and make the best decisions to protect residents. >> a real challenge for city leaders. countywide data shown a significant increase in covid-19 infections over the last few weeks. >> we are all frustrated and we want to do whatever we can to get back to the feeling that we

doctors. >> and updated cdc study of 4000 front-line workers found that vaccine effectiveness at preventing any infection dropped from 91% to 66% from april to august. the drop likely fueled by the delta variant's surge and winning vaccine efficiency over time. a doctor at ucsf says she's not surprised by the report. >> this has, such a high viral load, so it can kind of breakthrough are minor defenses more. in addition, we've all got our vaccines some time ago, so that means what a called -- what are called our antibody's are coming down. >> the good news is about hospitalizations. and a study done in los angeles county, the cdc says only 3% of people fully vaccinated go to the hospital, which doctors say is evidence of a good vaccine. >> an unvaccinated person had

fire. it does not include the caldor fire. that fire has grown to 192- square miles and is only 11% contained. the northeast side of the fire extended today towards highway 50 and large spot fires broke out in the area as well. the toxic smoke from the caldor fire basically shouted lake tahoe again to. ama: what about tomorrow? let's check in with sandy patel. sandy: it's not going to get better tomorrow either. let me show you a smoky view from zephyr cove in the lake tahoe area. the fire is really burning so intensely, sending a plume of thick smoke right over tahoe. right now, the air quality is factually -- fluctuating from hazardous all the way to unhealthy in the reno area. still hard to breathe up there. want to sw . the west-southwest wind is going

to keep that smoky air right over tahoe with the heaviest smoke there tomorrow night. a switch in the wind direction will begin to push some of that smoke southeastward, but you will notice it is still pretty heavy across the south lake tahoe area. i will be back to show you what are smoke forecast looks like and our air quality in just if units. ama: we will check back with you. the wildfire smoke in your lake tahoe is driving many residents and tourists to flee the area. j.r. stone is in san francisco, where visitors are enjoying the pressure. -- the fresh air. >> it just looked like armageddon. >> this winemaker is describing the smoky conditions he witnessed as he left lake tahoe monday, making the decision to leave his family's vacation home a week early and go back to the bay. >> tried to do some outdoor activities and it was just simply overwhelming. even inside the house, it looked like someone had built a fire inside the fireplace and smoked

out the house. >> that thought was good by some, like james, who escaped reno's dangerous smoky conditions i came to san francisco. >> when i left, the aqi was like 350 or something. it was burning my eyes. >> other visitors in san francisco saw those unhealthy to hazardous smoke conditions, canceled their plans, and extended their stay in the city. >> at lake tahoe, we were supposed to go like over the lake, sightseeing, and then in the hotel, there an amazing poo butl we couldn't the smoke. the meter cannot even detect how much smoke there is. >> while many are avoiding tahoe and staying in the bay area, one tour guide told us that a trip to the sierra is still happening this week and. she brought sore throat lozenges for out-of-towners who opted not to cancel, hopefully a soothing treat to what has been described

murder was shot and killed by an amtrak police officer in chicago. amtrak says they were notified by california authorities that the man who boarded the train in emeryville had several pending warrants, including one for word. when the suspect -- including one for murder. the suspect ran away from officers, injuring a worker in the process. police say he opened fire on the, they return fire. 4 people were taken to the hospital. the suspect later died from his injuries. ama: governor newsom sat down for a one-on-one interview with matt gottman in grizzly flats, a community near lake tahoe left devastate caldor fire -- left devastated by the caldor fire. >> peer we are, yet another community wiped off the map. if there's any message to be traditions, this is about places being wiped out the math -- wiped off the map. >> the ---- and

towards the rockies. some of these other fires also pushing all the way out toward the rocky mountain states. the onshore winds pushing it away from the bay area. most of you are seeing green. a couple pockets around oakland and nevermore, moderate air quality. when you look at the national picture, notice with that smoke plume going into the rocky mountain states, some areas are orange, which is poor. and the tahoe area, some of the worst air quality in the country. south lake tahoe reporting hazardous air. i want to show you a forecast over the next four days. smoky sunshine for wednesday, areas of smoke thursday through saturday. as you take a look at the surface smoke locally, tomorrow, we will have similar conditions to today, although a few spots will be good air quality. you will notice the tahoe area is still in the heavy smoke. going into thursday, we are

still dealing with the smoke near the wildfires. until those wildfires are contained even more, i think it's going to be a while before they get out of. the shark tank is visible. moderate air quality for most of you the next three days. a couple of spots where the sea breeze is blog, coast and central bay -- blowing, coast and central bay, south central bay expecting good air quality. we had hazy skies tonight. it's pretty clear as to why. area of low pressure keeping the winds coming off the ocean, blowing towards the tahoe area. that's going to reverse. thursday, friday, we will see more of a north wind. live doppler 7 showing you the fog near the coast. temperatures anywhere from the 50's to the 60's. a live look for my south beach counter tonight and salesforce tower is looking good. low clouds, patchy drizzle in the morning. still some hazy areas no air quality advisories up. hot summer weather returns the end of the week. tomorrow morning, watch out for
