square miles. it is 11% contained. cal fire says the northeast side of the fire expanded toward highway 50. the air quality is so bad near lake tahoe, some people are staying in the bay area to escape the smoke. we have more on the last-minute changes to summer vacation plans. amy: we are on treasure island enjoying the nice sea breeze. the cool, clean air. many tourists are finding this is the place to be. many people choosing san francisco instead of tahoe because of the terrible air quality. visitors to tahoe say it is unbearable. some have canceled plans and decide to extend their stay in san francisco. others made it there and realize they could not stay and headed

chicago, were in amtrak police officer shot and killed a man wanted for murder. california authorities told them a man who boarded a train in emeryville had several pending warrants, including one for murder. when the suspect arrived at union station, he ran from officers and hurt and amtrak worker. police say he shot at them and they return fire. four people were taken to the hospital. the suspect later died from his injuries. the u.s. supreme court has issued an order allowing the revival of a trump era immigration policy. the high court declined the biden administration request to place it on hold. it says migrants have to wait in mexico while waiting for an immigration court date. it was terminated after president biden took office. missouri and texas sued to

challenge. kumasi: an east bay judge dealt a big blow to uc berkeley's plans. the judge ordered cal to immediately stop the $126 million project and cap enrollment at last year's level. residents in the area sued the university to stop the project. according to the ruling, cal failed to share the impact of expanded enrollment on berkeley's homeless population. another round of stimulus checks from the state will start going out. the amount ranges from $500 to $1100. to qualify, you have to be a california resident with an income of less than $75,000. if you are eligible, you will receive $600, plus another $500

if you have dependents. some people who received the first round of checks will not qualify. a new report finds san francisco no longer has the priciest rental market in the u.s. because of the pandemic. it is now new york. $2850 for a one-bedroom unit. san francisco is a close second at $2800. that is down nearly 8%. san jose is fourth at $2200. oakland ranks seventh at $2000, which is down 9%. reggie: thousands of pfizer vaccines on the verge of expiring have received a shelf life extension. normally, the pfizer doses have a shelf life of six months if

the country right now. it is having an impact here in the bay area. reggie: good morning, it is wednesday, august 25. we are live wherever you stream. we have team coverage on the wildfire smoke this morning. kumasi: amy hollyfield. first, want to check in on the air quality with meteorologist mike nicco. mike: air quality is so bad, i have friends coming down from tahoe to stay with us for a couple days. there is green everywhere. let's head up to tahoe. this is the worst air quality on the entire earth. brazil comes in pretty close, but we are winning, unfortunately. we will look at the smoke forecast, next mid to upper 60's in san francisco. 70's for the rest of the bay.

a few 80's in our inland east bay neighborhoods. reggie: here is the latest on the two major wildfires burning in northern california. the dixie fire has burned more than 733,000 acres. it is 43% contained. the caldor fire has burned nearly 123,000 acres. it is just 11% contained. our team coverage continues with amy hollyfield in san francisco. some people are trying to escape all the smoke. amy: the cool, clear air here in the bay area is making this a nice place to be, instead of tahoe. this nice sea breeze is a good escape for tahoe visitors who just cannot take it anymore. visitors say it is miserable, the smoke is terrible outside, and even inside. one visitor telling us it felt

like someone built a fire in their living room. that is when they realized it was time to head back to the bay area. some tourists extended their stay in san francisco. >> we were supposed to call all over lake tahoe. -- we were supposed to go all over lake tahoe. there was an amazing pool at the hotel but we could not go because of the smoke. the meter could not even detect how much smoke there is. amy: the caldor fire is creating the smoke that is covering tahoe. it is burning southwest of tahoe. firefighters stated do not expected to reach the tahoe area, but some are leaving anyway because of the air quality. tourists can be seen walking outside wearing masks -- not because of covid, but because of the ash and smoke. this is a nice alternative for those trying to escape lake tahoe.

kumasi: turning now to the pandemic and the fight against covid-19. this morning, johnson & johnson claims its booster shot will increase covid anti-bodies 94. the study also found people without the booster shot still had a durable immune response eight months later. a cdc report is fueling the argument for booster shots. the efficacy of all vaccines dropped with the spread of the delta variant. we spoke with local doctors. >> and updated cdc study of 4000 frontline workers found vaccine effectiveness of preventing any infection dropped from 91% to 66%, likely fueled by the delta variant. >> it has come down some, but it is still high. >> one doctor says she is not surprised by the report. >> it has a high viral load, soo

indoors in public buildings in phoenicia. grocery stores, -- city council members approve the mandate yesterday and he goes into effect immediately. the city is now taking a harder stand than the rest of solano county, the only bay area county without a mask mandate. the family of a prison guard who died from covid-19 has filed a lawsuit against officials in the state department of corrections. the sergeant died one year ago this month following outbreak of the prison that killed 28 inmates and affected 2000 others. the suit claims correctional department officials make decisions that increased the risk of harm to employees and inmates. >> officials created a covid cesspool and required their inmates and employees to marinate in it. reggie: the outbreak at san quintin happened after 122

inmates were transferred there from a state prison during the early days of the pandemic. kumasi: now to the crisis in afghanistan. president biden is standing by the august 31 withdrawal date but there is growing bipartisan and international pressure to extend the deadline to get as many americans and allies out as possible. jobina: thousands of afghans are desperately trying to get to the perimeter fence at the kabul airport. president biden has resisted pressure to officially push back the deadline. he says that allows for increased risk with conflict of the taliban. biden admits contingency plans are being developed to adjust a timetable if necessary. this morning, -- there is o - small chance of an extension. >> i think the contingency plans

or if there is something extraordinary that happens, the military could possibly adjust to that and get more people out. i think at this point, the plan is to go ahead and try to get out as many as they can. jobina: coming up at 7:00, martha talks about the $80 billion in a banded u.s. military equipment now in the hands of the taliban. the taliban has rejected any plans for an extended u.s. troop withdrawal. -- claiming it wants to protect people from terrorist threats. more than 5400 americans have been evacuated. kumasi: a message from the california national guard is asking members who have been deployed to afghanistan and work with interpreters or translators want to be evacuated to contact the guard.

kumasi: san francisco's music festival will not require proof of vaccination or a negative covid test. anyone who is not fully vaccinated has to test negative within 72 hours of attending the festival. it is set to take place halloween weekend at golden gate park. disney cruise line will require most passengers to be vaccinated. the mandate will continue through november 1 for everyone 12 and older. children 12 or under will have to show proof of a negative test. earlier this year, florida's governor banned cruise lines from vaccine mandates buttigieg overturn the rule. -- vaccine mandates but a judge overturned the rule.
