and we begin our coverage with abc's faith abubey. faith, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you guys. as we learn more about those attacks in kabul yesterday, a new report says the u.s. military actually gave the taliban a list of americans who need to be evacuated. this morning, the u.s. military is bracing for more potential attacks in afghanistan after thursday's deadly bombings outside kabul's airport. the militant group isis-k, a sworn enemy of the taliban, now claiming responsibility. >> isis-k is saying we're here and we're going to fight the taliban for control of this country. >> reporter: a suicide bomber struck an airport gate just yards from u.s. forces who were processing afghans for evacuation flights. moments later a second bomber attacked a nearby hotel. the coordinated attack killing 13 u.s. troops and at least 95 afghans. >> we will not forgive. we will not forget. we will hunt you down and make

you pay. >> reporter: for days u.s. officials had warned of an attack leading up to the troop withdrawal deadline of august 31st. abc's ian pannell was at the airport gate just 24 hours before the bombings. >> these are the final steps that lead to the gate, the perimeter wall guarded by marines trying to separate friend from foe. the last stop is the guard tower right opposite today's blast site. inside troops keeping watch on the crowds below. >> reporter: this morning the biden administration is facing an avalanche of criticism. >> you don't have to be a military expert to say this could have been done better. >> reporter: in a private call with republicans last night, house minority leader kevin mccarthy vowed there would be a reckoning for biden's decision to pull troops out of afghanistan. mccarthy added, quote, every option is on the table. the white house is firing back at republicans who are demanding biden resign. >> this is a day where u.s. service members, 12 of them, lost their lives at the hands of terrorists. it's not a day for politics. >> reporter: elliot ackerman is

a former marine captain who served five tours in iraq and afghanistan. he is now organizing evacuations out of kabul from italy. he calls the u.s. effort to evacuate haphazard at best. >> my in-box is filled with emails from afghans begging, begging for help. so this just shows a complete collapse of american confidence. >> reporter: and now the president is responding to a report from the website politico which claims u.s. officials gave the taliban a list of americans and afghan allies in order to grant them access to the airport in kabul. biden says there have been occasions when the u.s. military contacted the taliban to allow certain people through security. >> for example, this bus is coming through with x number of people on it made up of the following group of people. but i can't tell you with any certitude that there has actually been a list of names. there may have been, but i know of no circumstance. >> reporter: up to 1,000 americans remain in afghanistan. among them the family of this

man in southern california. his wife and two children traveled to kabul to visit a sick family member. now they're stuck unable to get out of the country. >> they are in danger. the whole family is in danger. i'm afraid for their life. you know, i may lose them or, you know, they may die. >> reporter: and we reported yesterday that 23 students from the san diego area were stuck in afghanistan as well. we're told this morning that most of them will be home soon but there's some of them still stuck in afghanistan. phil. >> faith, thank you. we're going to take a closer look at the situation in kabul a little later on this half hour when we talk to a former cia officer. a state of emergency has been declared in louisiana as tropical storm ida forms in the caribbean. it could hit the gulf coast as a major hurricane late sunday. a hurricane watch has been issued for much of the louisiana coast including new orleans as well as the mississippi coast. forecasters says winds up to 120 miles per hour are possible along with 15 inches of rain,

but the path remains uncertain. louisiana's governor saying, quote, the time to prepare is now. we'll check the accuweather forecast in just a few moments. fire crews in california are scrambling at this hour to contain several wildfires moving closer to populated areas. increasing winds are pushing the caldor fire closer to south lake tahoe. that's triggered some new evacuations. meantime, near los angeles, the south fire has exploded. abc's matt gutman is on the fire line. >> reporter: over the past couple of hours we've watched this fire just rip across these hillsides. and even about 65 yards away, you can feel the heat of those flames. >> the south fire has destroyed at least four homes and was only 10% contained overnight. now to the pandemic. the u.s. is now reporting more than 800 deaths from covid per day. that's the highest level in five months. we're getting new insight into the crisis that hospitals in several states are facing. this morning, all 50 states are

now reporting a high rate of covid transmission with a new forecast warning we could see more than 100,000 new deaths between now and december 1st. >> i've seen a lot of people die over the last year and a half, and it is picking up pace. it's never been as bad as it is right now. >> reporter: in kentucky hospitalizations just hit an all-time high for the fifth consecutive day. >> seeing nearly 5,000 cases and 65 kentuckians that we lost in just one day's report is tough. >> reporter: in north carolina, the icus are treating more patients now than at any other time during the pandemic. in georgia some hospitals are turning away ambulances, a similar situation in florida where a hospital in west palm beach had to transport a police officer to ohio after running out of ecmo machines, a life support system that provides oxygen by bypassing the lungs. >> it's a nightmare that i can't wake up from. with the pandemic going on, there are no ecmo machines

available in the state of florida. >> reporter: in central florida they're running out of places to put bodies. >> this is not being exaggerated or blown out of proportion by the media. this is real. >> reporter: with morgues at capacity, some hospitals are now using refrigerated trucks to store the dead. it comes as florida's ban on mask mandates returns to court with a judge set to rule on its legality today. meanwhile, in illinois the governor is now reinstating mask requirements. >> hospital staff are becoming overwhelmed and overburdened. people are dying who don't have to die. >> reporter: and in washington state one high school's plan to fight covid igniting a firestorm of controversy. the school wanted to force athletes to wear ankle monitors to enforce social distancing but decided against the plan after backlash from parents. meanwhile, an update from delta air lines in a story we told you about yesterday. after saying it will force unvaccinated workers to pay higher insurance premiums, it's

now seen a fivefold increase in the number of employees getting vaccinated. the supreme court has issued a ruling that ends a federal moratorium on evictions during the pandemic. the court's conservatives said the rule should have been authorized by congress, not by the cdc. the white house says the court's ruling, which allows evictions to resume, will actually put more families at risk of getting covid. several police officers who protected the u.s. capitol during the january riot are now suing former president trump. the seven officers are also suing far right extremist groups for their alleged role in the attack. the lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of damages. the officer who shot and killed a woman inside the capitol during the riot is now breaking his silence. lieutenant michael byrd tells nbc he shot ashli babbitt only as a last resort after he says the rioters refused to comply with his commands. > i was taking a tactical stance. you're ultimately hoping that your commands will be complied with and, unfortunately, they

were not. she was posing a threat to the united states house of representatives. >> babbitt's family disputes the claim that she was a threat, but multiple investigations have cleared byrd of any wrongdoing. all right. time now for a look at your friday weather. good morning. the tropics are active once again. tropical storm ida moving through the caribbean expected to strengthen to a category 3 hurricane as we head toward the latter half of the weekend making landfall on a louisiana coast. the danger zone is the entire louisiana coast with a hurricane watch, a tropical storm watch around mobile bay, and we're looking at up to 20 inches of rain at landfall in louisiana and also an accuweather local storm max of up to 130 miles an hour. i'm accuweather meteorologist kevin coskren. coming up, the coyote attack caught on camera. also ahead, a major discovery in the fight against

back now with a 4-year-old girl attacked by a coyote in southern california. surveillance video shows family members outside their home when the animal runs by and attacks the young girl. the father ran after the animal. his daughter was injured in the arm. there is new concern this morning about so-called murder hornets in the pacific northwest. a massive nest has been found and destroyed in washington state. it's the first discovery this year. a queen and nearly 1,500 other hornets were inside a tree. state officials vacuumed them up but say it was a close call. >> a few of us who were working very tight in the area were approached by the hornets, and they did actually attempt to

sting us this time, but we're all very happy to say our hornet suits worked very well and no injured were sustained. >> murder hornets are not typically aggressive toward people but their sting can kill. the hornets prey typically on honeybees which as you know are crucial for pollinating crops. an apparent gas explosion at a strip mall near phoenix, arizona, left four people seriously injured. the explosion caused a roof to collapse sending debris falling 100 yards away. nearby buildings had to be evacuated including a preschool. the head of the women's advocacy group time's up has resigned. the latest fallout that forced new york governor andrew cuomo to step down. tina tchen facing criticism say her organization worked with andrew cuomo to discredit one of his accusers. in south florida, the pilot of a small plane had to make an emergency water landing because of engine problems. our miami station aired this video showing the plane in the water near an island in biscayne

biden i'd advise him not to withdrawal all forces in afghanistan to leave a residual you'll force of 5,000. which would protect what we fought for for 20 years. we're now relying on i group proven to be completely untrustworthy and we're being attacked by isis proves that the taliban can't be trustednd can't prevent terrorist organizations from existing in afghanistan and attacking western interest. >> what do you see happening in kabul next? what's the best and worst-case scenario? >> i unfortunately don't think we saw the worst case dale earnhardt, sr. scenario we saw the worst-case scenario, unfortunately, i think we're leaving quite frankly a failure. >> our thanks to nick.
