character, laney boggs.ldhe to . >> looking forward to that. but we have a busy morning, we're following a lot of breaking news including that news out of afghanistan where an american drone strike has killed a member of the islamic state believed to be involved in planning attacks against americans in kabul. the strike coming as the u.s. national security team warns another terror attack in afghanistan is likely. but first, the gulf coast bracing for hurricane ida. ida slamming western cuba overnight and is now barreling toward louisiana where the governor has declared a state of emergency. >> the state bracing for what could be a direct hit from the powerful category 4 storm. let's go back to rob who is in norwalk, connecticut, with the latest on where ida is headed and the damage it could do. good morning, again, rob. >> hi, eva. unfortunately conditions are favorable for not only strengthening but rapid intensification. now that it's headed into the gulf of mexico. it's strengthening.

here it is on the satellite imagery, to the west of key west, about 400 miles from the mouth of the mississippi river. the last few frames there with the bright pink and getting more symmetrical. the favorable environment includes water temperatures that are well above average even for the gulf of mexico, so climate change is playing a part. we're looking at category 3 late tonight, category 4 on approach tomorrow. that's going to be with it a lot of impacts including winds that will be much like a tornado. it will take out anything in its path. storm surge, this part versus very susceptible, 10 to 15 feet of surge. levee systems are going on be tested with this thing. the surge east of new orleans, lakes will see a significant surge. the rainfall with this will be significant as well, 10 to 15 inches of rain. maybe 15 to 20 in some spots. new orleans will not be able to handle that. more rain getting up into the mississippi and parts of

tennessee where they have seen a lot of rainfall the past couple of weeks. flooding is going to be an issue with this storm as it comes in 16 years after hurricane katrina made landfall in this area, hopefully not a repeat performance of that as far as human devastation. >> rob, thank you. mandatory evacuations have been ordered for those outside the levees in new orleans, but hospital patients are being forced to shelter in place. abc's victor oquendo is in new orleans with the very latest on that and how the city is preparing, victor, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. we are right along lake pontchartrain bracing for hurricane ida. the national hurricane center just said that preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion today for everyone in the warning area and that's exactly what we're seeing. residents now scrambling to prepare for the storm. we saw long stretches of cars lined up at gas stations in new orleans. others boarding up and bagging sand. city officials working ahead

closing those levees, new orleans mayor telling residents it's time to shelter in place. and all of this in the middle of what doctors tell me has been their worst covid surge yet. in louisiana, with one of the highest covid-19 case rates per capita in the country, the numbers are so high hospitals will not be able to evacuate patients. the storm already forcing some testing and vaccine sites to shut down early. about 2,000 fema personnel have been deployed to the gulf coast and they have pre-positioned additional resources like food, water and generators, president biden has already been in touch with the governors of louisiana, mississippi and alabama. guys. >> and we are hoping everyone there takes the necessary precautions and stays safe. victor, including you and your team, thank you. now to the breaking news from afghanistan. u.s. officials saying we targeted a member of isis-k in a drone strike who was involved in possibly planning additional attacks at the kabul airport and it comes as all u.s. citizens are urged to avoid the airport. abc's julia macfarlane is in london with the latest.

julia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai, that's right. this new warning telling all u.s. citizens to stay away from the airport regardless of any plans they might have to evacuate. that comes just hours after news overnight of that drone strike targeting isis in afghanistan. breaking overnight, air strike in afghanistan. a u.s. drone hitting a member of the islamic state, a u.s. official saying the target was involved in planning attacks against americans in kabul but not linked to thursday's deadly bombing at the airport. this strike coming as the u.s. national security team warns another terror attack on afghanistan is likely. >> we certainly are prepared and would expect future attempts. we're monitoring these threats very, very specifically virtually in realtime. >> reporter: the deadline for withdrawal now less than four days away. according to the white house 6800 people were evacuated in a 12-hour period.

but chaos unfolding at the airport. a woman seen holding this 3-month-old baby who is a u.s. citizen, their family going three days without food and water as they try to avoid the taliban. the biden administration saying friday u.s. commanders are making adjustments on the ground to ensure their troop's safety after a suicide bomber killed 13 service members thursday. the blast also killing about 170 afghans. overnight, new details about the troops who gave their lives to save others. including navy corpsman max soviak and marines corporal hunter lopez and lance corporals kareem nikoui, david espinoza, jared schmitz and rylee mccollum. mccollum just three weeks away from welcoming his first child. >> he was excited. he would have been a great father. he was ready. he was happy. >> reporter: well, some more news this morning on evacuations. u.s. officials say around three dozen unaccompanied afghan

>> the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich gets a cookie makeover. that's in our next half hour. but now to our "gma" cover story. as the delta variant surges, as kids are heading back to school a florida state judge has now ruled against a ban from governor ron desantis on school mask mandates. joining us to break down your kids' rights in the classroom is attorney areva martin. governors around the country have taken steps to ban mask mandates in and out of the classroom. can schools and districts defy these orders and still require masks for students? >> well, we know that decision by that district court judge in florida is huge and it's going to embolden those school districts around the country that want kids to wear masks and so i think you're going to see more districts defy their governors and defy their state legislators if they believe that following the cdc guidelines and making masks a requirement for students will keep those students safe, so i think we

watch this space because more and more school districts are probably going to require that students wear masks as a result of this local court decision. >> there is a real divide amongst parents and schools about if students should be masked in the classroom. if a masked student gets covid after going to school with kids who are unmasked, would the parents then have a case against the school or the state? >> it really depends on a particular state law. but the general issue is around negligence and reasonableness. did the school district make the school environment safe for all kids? did that parent act in an unreasonable manner? did that parent know that the child had symptoms of covid but still allowed that child to attend school without a mask? those are some of the questions that will be asked but the general answer is, yes, you may see lots of litigation from parents against other parents for kids who are not masked during the school day. >> so, areva, another big topic

getting a lot of debate is surrounding vaccinations and vaccination mandates specifically. with the pfizer shot receiving full fda approval could schools require not just teachers and staff but students 12 and older to get the vaccine? >> absolutely. i think we're going to see more and more vaccination mandates by schools. think about it. kids are already required to get a lot of vaccinations before they can even enter kindergarten as required by state law and there is a 1905 supreme court case that says that states can mandate vaccines in the interest of public health. so, even though there's lot of the debate and states have taken different approaches to this, i think ultimately the decision to mandate vaccines will start to take place throughout school districts across this country. >> areva, to this point about vaccinations, as whit just mentioned the debate involving teachers. many school and districts don't require teacher to get the shot. do parents have the right to know the vaccination status of

their kids' teachers or is that something that's protected? >> really good question and no legal right a parent has to know the medical status, medical history of a particular teacher but doesn't prevent parents from asking teachers if they've been vaccinated and parents can also follow what's happening with respect to their states because we know many states are requiring teachers to be vaccinated, so i encourage parents to know what's going on in their state, check with their local school boards to find out what the states and the school board's policy is around vaccinations but it doesn't hurt to ask the question. >> attorney areva martin with so much going on surrounding this debate, thank you so much for helping us clarify some of that this morning. now, let's head back over to rob who is very busy in the weather department. rob. >> good morning again. let's break down a few more of the factors with hurricane ida on approach to the louisiana coastline. warnings, hurricane warnings are up. tropical storm warnings are up as well from lake charles all the way through new orleans and

biloxi included in this. a watch for mobile, hattiesburg as well, because this thing will be a strong storm even as it plows inland, why, because it's heading over the gulf of mexico which is typically warm but even warmer than usual. one to two to three to four degrees above average. some of these water temperatures. as you get closer to new orleans so that's why we think intensification is going to happen and rapidly and, yes, climate change playing a part in those water temperatures for sure. we'll see big waves with this,

louisiana as hurricane ida is expected to rapidly intensify over the next two days, possibly making landfall as a category 4. evacuations have been ordered as the gulf coast braces for a direct hit. anyone going to this year's u.s. open tennis tournament will have to show proof of a covid-19 vaccination. new york city's mayor saying he's putting the health and safety of fans first by mandating the proof of vaccination for all ticket holders, 12 years old and older. and the san diego zoo has a new resident, a new rhino calf weighing, get this, 125 pounds at birth. joined the crew at the safari park this week, the yet to be named calf expected to gain 100 pounds a month for the first year getting to somewhere between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds when it's fully grown. whit has been planning his emergency plan in case i give birth on the set. >> yeah, you know what, that's a real conversation that's been taking place. the due date is not that far away. >> the baby will not be that big. >> let's hope it's not a baby rhino.

well, now thanks to netflix the roles are reversed, "he's all that" has tiktok megastar addison rae taking the lead in her film, the first film for her, and now she's the one taking on that prom bet and playing her mother, get this, is none other than the one and only rachael leigh cook and this morning, she's still all that. rachael leigh cook joins us live. rachael leigh cook, so good to see you this morning. >> so good to see you guys. you're having way too much fun over there. hello, hello. >> we've had too much coffee but we are super excited about this brand-new movie. we have to start, though, with the og, "she's all that." it's literally one of the quintessential teen movies of our childhood. take us back to making it in 1999. >> oh, my goodness. first of all, how much do you remember about your life, your day-to-day life 20 years ago, it's a little bit blurry, but filming the movie was a great experience, you know, it was -- it's exhausting. it's a pretty grueling schedule but it was such a wonderful time for me and i sort of left my regular high school very early,

i think it was like midway through my freshman year, so i really consider this movie and the people who i got to work on it with like my sort of by proxy like actual classmates from a million years ago so they don't have to agree with that story but that's what i'm going with. >> and we just watched the clip of when you're walking down the stairs in the red dress and i'm hearing the song "kiss me" because i remember the movie that well. take us back to that iconic dance at the prom. you said that it's one of your favorite scenes that you got to shoot with that movie. >> yes, if you look at the movie, yep, that's -- that was literally all i ever did as a dance, i made the case my character wouldn't know this dance, plus i'm not a professional dancer and that's a gross understatement, so i just got to watch all of these incredible dancers do their thing and, oh, look, i guess i'm still dancing a little bit -- i had such a crush on usher and

then he shows up to work on the movie. i was just completely like my head exploded. >> all of this is just so nostalgic from 1999. i love it. your character in the new movie is not the same person you played in the original so tell us, what do you think laney boggs would be up to today and would she still be with zack? >> i think that if i had to guess that they were a reason for the season or, you know, not a lifetime couple. i like to say that laney would probably be busy moving her family out of portland because it's just too commercial now and that she'd probably be running for public office. >> wow. >> so let's talk about "he's all that." so tell us what we can expect here and what was it like revisiting the story that really changed your career? >> what was it like revisiting it? first of all, i was not sure if my ego could handle it. i thought is this a good idea to really sort of raise my hand and say, let me be on screen in a

way that, you know, sort of references my much, much younger self. like, do i really want to offer myself up for that? but overall, it was just really important to me to be a support to this new cast and what they're doing and to just put my very minor stamp of validation on it and they did a great job with the movie. i'm so happy for everyone involved. >> and you have two young kids. one of them came with you to the "he's all that" premiere this week. do your kids think mom has a cool job? >> i certainly hope so because i think i do. do they think i'm cool, period, 100% no. not even a little but, yes, i did bring my daughter charlotte and it was a pretty magical night for both of us. it was an incredible full circle moment to have her there and, yeah, i'm going to treasure that forever. oh, my god, she looks so cute in that picture, you guys.

than the front door, but the key is to keep it simple. focus on easy tasks like a fresh coat of paint that could be done for less than $20, beautiful floral arrangements and wreaths. for every season. you can put a wreath in summer and spring and think about really eye-catching doorknobs, doorknockers, other kinds of metal pieces on your door, start with the front door, the best place to make a good first impression. >> excellent. we'll start with the front door, we already know it works. that's great. let's move on to the doormat, of course, this is the first welcome to the home. what are your doormat dos here? >> yeah, so, it's easy to think of a doormat as an afterthought. it's kind of give it short thrift but don't overlook the doormat. number one, they're a great way to communicate messaging about your home. welcome or you could even create a doormat that's personalized and have the whole family get into it. put the family name, put the kids' names, go to a catalog and choose your doormat style together. also, washable.

make sure your doormat is washable. don't want to track in germs and other kinds of nasty things. let alone dirt. make sure the mat's washable. think about personalizing it with a fun message or your family name and look for it from all the major brands that sell them. >> all right, so, let's talk about plants now this morning. how do you incorporate some greenery and perhaps a little bit of color. >> yeah, plants are the most family-friendly activity. my kids love them. think about ferns, colorful petunias, topiaries or boxwoods but the most important thing is, to be eco-conscious, no, no, no to plastic pots. get ceramic pots that last for a long time or you can be super diy and make the ceramic pots yourself. buy some clay and do it as a family activity with the kids one afternoon in the backyard. so think about sustainable eco-friendly pots from ceramics and definitely do it yourself if you can and together as a family

activity. >> and speaking of greenery, you say artificial turf is a good way to go. explain. >> we often think of having to have grass or long grass that is natural. which is great but, a, we're dealing with really high temperatures right now, which could make it brown, and b, it can be unsightly when it happens so consider artificial turf. yes, it costs more initially. i think it can cost up to a couple hundred dollars for an average backyard but it lasts up to ten years which is great. and it's sustainable and long lasting but the most important thing is to get artificial turf that allows the ground and anything growing underneath to breathe and for the water to flow successfully. you don't want to trap it in there, because that can erode the soil and actually make things worse. you could also mix and match between artificial and natural, so get some of that artificial

snacks. let's start with the first one, kids will go nuts for this first one, it's a sweet twist an a classic lunch. tell us about your pb&j cookies. >> that's right. these are fun and we love these because the kids can really get involved making them. you just roll out a basic peanut butter cookie in between sheets of parchment, so no mess, and then kids choose what to put inside like a pb&j sandwich. choose your jam. easy to cut. no cookie cutters. >> that's fantastic. not every day can be your birthday but every day can have birthday cake bars. i don't have one on mine. >> you ate yours. >> well, i did. >> i think i'm talking for other parents here when i say going back to school is a celebration. so we are celebrating with these rainbow sprinkle cookies and fun because they're just simple sugar cookies shaped in a bar, kids, super easy to get involved. don't even need a mixer. these can be fun, too, you can

just customize them with sprinkles and the color of your school. for school colors. put them in a lunch box skip the frosting and kids love them anyway. >> we're making these disappear pretty quickly here. finally you're showing us how to make trail mix bars. >> yes, we're going to pretend these are healthy. they sound healthy, trail mix bars. we just did a quick toast of the oats, peanuts and sunflower seeds in the oven. i did that first. you don't really need the kids for. once that's done we have a nice mixture of melted butter and brown sugar and lots of honey which make the bars soft once you gt all mixed up ous.o,n you can put anything in trail he mix so let the kids decide what they want to put. you can put dried banana chips, coconut, you name it. we do raisins because like i said, little healthy, and then not so healthy some mini m&ms. colorful celebrating going back
