moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> a raging wildfire in in sierra, smoke spilling into the bay area, clogging up the air. a searing heat. it is a rough weekend with no immediate relief in sight. thank you for joining us. you are watching abc 7 news at 5:00, live on abc 7, hulu live, and wherever you stream. containment has gone up on the caldor fire. . the flames are headed east. there are concerns the weather is going to take a turn for the worst tomorrow and because the fire to explode in size, threatening more communities. smoke from the wildfire is blanketing the bay area, making for unhealthy air.

adding the searing heat in many cities, it is a nasty start to the weekend. it is a triple threat between the wildfires, the smoke, and the heat. we have team coverage for you. cornell barnard looking at how this is impacting the bay area. drew tuma him and monitoring the conditions. we start with a stephanie sierra who spent the day on the fire lines. reporter: air quality here in southlake tahoe has gone from bad to worse. residents and businesses are faring what is to come, as the caldor fire is moving in this direction. a telltale sign is the smoke you see in the distance. the flames continued moving northeast from the community of strawberry. as the winds are picking up, the less you can see here on the lake. community preparing to evacuate any day now. orange smokies guys leaving behind an eerie haze of emptiness in south lake tahoe as the caldor fire inches closer. . what direction is the fire headed tonight? >> fire will probably be heading

in the north northeasterly direction. reporter: the flames burning 12 mountain south -- 12 mile south. >> in the day, it is just like a ghost town. >> it's sad. there is really nothing but the casino. reporter: are fairly and jim pilgrims visited from oklahoma, a lonely one coming even worse for businesses. >> ones that are hurting. reporter: the city's main strip deserted. parking lots empty. golf course even depressing as hayes looms in the background. the air turning to ash. >> one of the days, the sky turned black. it was 4:30 in the afternoon. it looks like something out of the wizard of oz reporter: how would you rank the smoke? >> the worst i've ever seen by far. reporter: to give you an idea of how bad the air quality is, our a qi was around 150. now it is close to 50 -- close to 300. you can barely see the mountains in this bed of smoke. inside the bed of smoke, streets

barely visible. fire crews wrestling with the flames, trying to save homes. >> too much. i think people have had it. reporter: day smith tells us it is a long road ahead. >> with the wind now, as you can tell, the inversion layer has lifted, so the fire activity will increase. reporter: leaving people like mccall bracing to leave. >> it we have to evacuate, we will evacuate. reporter: calfire says the next few days will be critical as fire crews battle the heat along with dry and windy conditions. we can even feel the wind picking up tonight on the lake. i will add as far as whether southlake will face any evacuation warnings tomorrow, calfire's j smith said it is unlikely at this point, but added anything is possible with the wind overnight. live in south lake tahoe, stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. kumasi: thank you. look at this. some eerie images coming out of the caliber fire zone. this video of a bear shrouded in smoke was taken yesterday in the

town of strawberry. you can see that ash is falling as the bear tries to go about it today. smoke from the wildfires is choking the bay area this weekend. on top of it, we have a heat wave. checking and withdrew with more on that. drew: some of the poorest air quality we've seen all season. you can see the smoke, smelled smoke, it is not changing in the next whenever hours. air quality now is unhealthy for a lot of us. unhealthy for sensitive groups. the orange. cc across the bay area, unhealthy for everybody. sacramento, that is where the poorest or quality is found at this moment. this is the view from space over northern california, a few hours ago. you can see all of the smoke that is creating the air quality issues right now. you're on this evening, we do not anticipate any changes to the air quality. similar story for tomorrow morning. kumasi, everything changes on monday. we will have those details in the full forecast in a few minutes. kumasi: north, south, east,

west, every direction you are looking in the bay area, you will see some haze. temperatures hitting the century mark. cornell barnard joining us from san rafael where we know you found a lot of people sweating it out. reporter: yeah, for sure. it is a really bad combination. it is hot, it is smoky, so much wildfire smoke from the north pumping into the bay area, leaving mountains in a very gray haze. many folks trying to stay safe and cool. skies were smoky in -- and and but soccer games were happening in berkeley, where coaches were monitoring the air quality index. >> you know what is going on, the air quality is bad. if they say it is ok, we just come and play. >> is the opportunity to get out a little bit and we jump at the chance. but if it gets really bad, i'm sure they will tell us we will

have to reschedule for another time. reporter: san pablo coach jorge serrano was concerned about his players breathing so much wildfire smoke. >> i think if we stay under, we can play and stay safe. over 100, we've got to go home. we have to skip it. reporter: over 100 a qi is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. by late morning, the air quality map was moving from orange to red in some parts of the bay area. from our sutro tower cam, the golden gate bridge, a mere shadow. from the east bay, downtown oakland was hazy. the bay bridge vanishing in the smoke. along with the san francisco skyline. zach tannenbaum's track event in oakland got canceled. >> were going to have a team in her squad race, walking miller park. this morning, our coaches sent out an emailed saying there he was too high. which is 150. i think that is the unsafe range. reporter: the air and extreme heat was enough to send jim and

troops out of the area around the airport in kabul. reporter: overnight, the u.s. carried out a drone strike in afghanistan, and the hunger province targeting an isis-k planner. >> two high-profile isys targets were killed, and one was wounded. we know of zero civilian casualties. reporter: americans still in afghanistan were again told on friday to avoid the perimeter around the airport due to security threats. >> threats are still very real. we are taking all of the means necessary to make sure we remain focused on that threat string, and doing what we can for force protection. reporter: the state department says 5400 u.s. citizens have been evacuated. there are proximally 350 citizens still in afghanistan looking to leave. some may have already left. an additional 280 have been in touch with government officials, and either want to stay in afghanistan, or have not communicated their plans. pentagon confirming saturday morning the withdrawal of the

on a clear day, you can see the san francisco skyline, parts of the east bay. . that is not the case tonight. let's talk about the surface smoke. we are not going to see any changes over the next 10 to 12 hours. future tracker smoke showing you that smoke will stay overhead even for first thing on our sunday. late into sunday, then early into monday, we will start to see an onshore breeze kickin. that will help to push some of the smoke to our east. we will see relief from the smoke starting monday. and barely tuesday -- and really tuesday into wednesday. we had a spare the air day in effect. moderate to poor. what we are dealing with across the region. by monday, fresh air starts to move in. we fluctuate between good and moderate. that is likely where we will stay for the rest of the upcoming week. here is the other story. it is a hot day. earlier, san francisco hit 84 degrees. that would make it the warmest day so far this year. down to 74 in the city. warm in the east bay. 95, fremont.

93, san jose. the northbay, it is very hot. 102, napa. the east bay at 102. high-pressure sitting over us. what that is doing it is acting like a heat pump but also forcing all of the elevated smoke to the surface. that is why the air quality has been bad over the last couple of days. that is why you are smelling that smoke more today and yesterday. the area of low pressure will move in monday and tuesday, cool us off, and bring us the fresh air. overnight, 50's, close to the coast. upper 50's and lower 60's around the bay shoreline, we will hang onto the warmth. 60's to low 70's. that creates the launching pad for another hot day away from the coast. by 9:00 a.m., spot warming into the 70's. it is off to the aim -- off to a mild start. islands time, many spots, 70's and 80's close to the water. likely into the 90's by lunchtime. another hot day for a lot of us. 100, antioch tomorrow.
