the flames are headed east. there are concerns the weather is going to take a turn for the worst tomorrow and because the -- and because -- and because the fire to explode in size, threatening more communities. smoke from the wildfire is blanketing the bay area, making for unhealthy air. then you add in the searing heat in many cities, it is a nasty start to the weekend. it is a triple threat between the wildfires, the smoke, and the heat. we have team coverage for you. cornell barnard looking at how this is impacting the bay area. drew tuma monitoring the conditions. we start with stephanie sierra who spent the day on the fire lines. reporter: we spent most of our time with crews who have been tirelessly working along the highway 50 corridor in the community of strawberry, where fire is on both sides of the highway moving northeast in this direction. all of that smoke is coming here to south lake tahoe. you can see the haze in the distance covering the lake at a

time it normally would be packed with people here. those are docked and empty. orange smoky skies leaving behind an eerie haze of emptiness in south lake tahoe as the caldor fire inches closer. what direction is the fire headed tonight? >> the fire will probably be heading in the north northeasterly direction. reporter: the flames burning 12 miles south from the mountain resort town usually bustling this time of year. >> in the day, it is just like a ghost town. >> it's sad. there is really nothing but the casino. reporter: beverly and jim pilgrims visit from oklahoma, a lonely one coming even worse for businesses. >> they are ones that are hurting. reporter: the city's main strip deserted. businesses closed up. parking lots empty. the golf course even depressing as haze looms in the background. the air turning to ash. >> one of the days, the sky turned black. it was 4:30 in the afternoon. the streetlamps were coming on. it looked like something out of the wizard of oz. reporter: jim has lived in southlake for 32 years. how would you rank the smoke? >> the worst we've ever seen it

by far. reporter: to give you an idea of how bad the air quality is, our aqi was around 150. now it is close to 300. not surprising from our view behind us. you can barely see the mountains in this bed of smoke. inside the bed of smoke, streets barely visible. fire crews wrestling with the flames, trying to save homes. >> it is too much. i think people have had it. reporter: calfire's jay smith tells us it is a long road ahead. >> with the wind now, as you can tell, the inversion layer has lifted, so the fire activity will increase. reporter: leaving people like mccall bracing to leave. >> if we have to evacuate, we will evacuate. reporter: we are back with you live with this hazy view in southlake. i spoke with calfire that wrapped up their community meeting tonight, stressing no indication of additional evacuation warnings. as we have heard, people here in southlake are preparing to leave at any moment. they did mention the fire is

starting to ramp up in the community of strawberry. certainly a lot of concerns in the days ahead. i do know of some families who have left the area because the air quality is so bad. we see some ash falling on my shirt here. they have left and they have been using their ring doorbell cameras to identify the smoke level on their streets to see if their homes are going to be ok. they are less than one mile from the evacuation zone. a lot of uncertainty for families in this area. live in southlake, stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. kumasi: thank you, stephanie. the smoke from the wildfires is choking the bay area. on top of that, we have a heat wave. you are tracking all of that. drew: this is the poorest air quality we have seen so far this season. unhealthy on a lot of our aqi readings. take a look at the air-quality map. . the poorest air quality is in the south bay where it is unhealthy. much of the bay area dealing with unhealthy sensitive groups. a lot of smoke making its way to the surface. unhealthy air as you move east around sacramento, that is where the poorest air quality is.

the view from space really tells the story tonight. all of the smoke sitting over northern california, creating these air-quality concerns. over the next couple of hours, we don't expect any change this evening. late night by 11:00 p.m., we expect moderate to unhealthy air quality. a similar story to start the day tomorrow. we are finding not only fresh air going to move in on monday, but also much cooler weather. all the details on the forecast in a few minutes. kumasi: thank you, drew. north, south, east, west, every direction you are looking in the bay area, you will see some haze. making things worse is the heat with temperatures hitting the century mark. reporter cornell barnard joining us from san rafael where we know -- where a lot of people are sweating it out. you too, maybe? reporter: yeah, it is so hot. and it is so smoky. so much smoke from those wildfires up north, pumping here into the bay area, even these mountains in a virtual haze.

a lot of folks around here just trying to stay safe and stay cool. skies were smoky and gray but soccer games were happening in berkeley, where coaches were monitoring the air quality index. >> if you know what is going on, the air quality is bad. but if they say it is ok, we just come and play. >> this is the opportunity to get out a little bit and we jump at the chance. but if it gets really bad, i'm sure they will tell us we will have to reschedule for another time. reporter: san pablo coach jorge serrano was concerned about his players breathing so much wildfire smoke. >> i think if we stay under, we can play and stay safe. over 100, we've got to go home. we have to skip it. reporter: over 100 aqi is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. by late morning, the air quality map was moving from orange to red in some parts of the bay area. from our sutro tower cam, the golden gate bridge, a mere shadow.

from the east bay, downtown oakland was hazy. the bay bridge vanishing in the smoke. along with the san francisco skyline. zach tannenbaum's track event in oakland got canceled. >> we were going to have a team inner squad race, walking miller park. this morning, our coaches sent out an emailed saying there he -- saying the air quality was too i. it was i think that is the 150. unsafe range. reporter: the air and extreme heat was enough to send jim and his mom to the movies for some air-conditioned comfort. >> my mom is elderly. her heart is not that good. we were just happy we could be in a theater inside. >> we had other n95's, but they were sold out. reporter: n95 masks recommended by experts have been selling fast. lorraine says, get them while they last. >> everybody comes in asking for the n95's for their quality. plus, it protects you from covid. reporter: the bay area air

[chanting] kumasi: activists held a rally outside united nation's plaza in san francisco coming on the -- calling on the international community to stand in solidarity and support the afghan people. >> there is so much suffering in afghanistan. right now, afghanistan needs its humanitarian aid, they need international solidarity.

the afghan people have been left to tend for themselves and they cannot do that right now, especially the ones who have helped the west. kumasi: the group wants the u.s. to open its borders to afghans whose lives are at risk, and international support of a democratic system that includes impartial elections in afghanistan. a warning today from president biden who said another terrorist attack at the kabul airport is highly likely in the next three days. the u.s. launched a drone strike yesterday killing two isis militants. this came a day after a terrorist attack at the airport killed 13 u.s. soldiers. mr. biden says it would not be the last retaliatory strike. u.s. state department estimates about 350 americans are still waiting for evacuation from afghanistan, while the pentagon says u.s. troops have begun their withdrawal from kabul. another sign of this country's

kumasi: this september marks 20 years since the 9/11 attacks. a ducky feature shows never before seen footage. it premieres tomorrow on our sister network. reporter george kent nokia from our sister station spoke with the project's producers. >> oh my god. >> 30 people in the northeast quarter. >> everybody out. reporter: 9/11 one day in america, recounts that fateful day 20 years ago. at times, minute by minute, through first-person narratives of the first responders and survivors. filmmakers spend more than three years interviewing 54 people. i am learning their personal stories. >> you end up developing a relationship and a rapport through these first-person accounts. that is kind of -- that is really the primary purpose, is to be able to start to build empathy and to humanize the events, versus thinking of them

in a geopolitical way, which has kind of become the narrative as time has gone on. >> there were also signs of hope. those little moments of caring for another with the difference between life and death. >> i think we were aching to step back and make sure it was very much the people who experienced that day, who have their voices heard. >> then left me here to die. but i'm going to go home. they rescued me so i could go home. reporter: two great this series, the filmmaking team sifted through almost 1000 hours of archival footage. some of it never seen before. >> i think the thing i'm most proud of is being able to create a space for those who have the courage to share their stories. and to do our best to honor

across the region. we will start the day tomorrow with a fair amount of smoke. late sunday and into early monday, an onshore breeze will begin to kick in. . that is going to bring in fresh air locally. that will improve the air quality. tomorrow, air quality, similar to today. moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups depending on where you are. by monday, start to see better news. good to moderate air quality. that will be the case for tuesday and wednesday. near those hot temperatures. 93, fremont. we have cooled down to 70 in the city. still, hot in the north bay. 95, the current temperature in napa. live doppler 7 along with satellite, this area high-pressure, it is our heat pump. it also acts like a lid on the atmosphere. that is why we have the air quality issues, the smoke is forced to the surface. that is why you are smelling the smoke more the past couple of days. i was when we have the poor air quality. that continues tomorrow as well. overnight, mid to upper 50's,

close to the ocean. upper 50's to low 60's around the bay shoreline. mid-60's to low 70's. future whether hour-by-hour, by 9:00 a.m., warming up quickly tomorrow away from the coast. into the 70's if not the 80's. we are already approaching 90 degrees in the hottest spots by lunchtime. we have a heat advisory in effect for parts of lake and mendocino county. half-day for a lot of us. today was the hottest day. tomorrow is no picnic. into the 90's if not the triple digits. 80's to low 90's around the bay shoreline. i want to take you into the gulf. we are tracking hurricane ida. it is forecasted to become a major hurricane over the next 12 hours. the forecasted path has landfall on the coastline is a major category four storm. smokey, still hot tomorrow. better air quality on monday. much cooler on tuesday. we will keep those cool temperatures as we start september on wednesday. >> abc 7 sports sponsored by

it feels good to be back in the wind. >> it felt good to give high-fives again. i felt like all of us did a little bit. we just have to bring them into the game. >> yeah, we have been having high-fives, it just hasn't been at the end of the games. today, that definitely felt good to get the monkey off our back. this team does not give up. we are always fighting and moving to tomorrow. chris: one preseason game stands on the way of the nfl regular season. tomorrow will mark the dress rehearsal game for the 49ers with the starters getting quality refs against the raiders for a 1:00 kickoff. you can expect to see jimmy garoppolo get more than one series tomorrow. the coach said he would like to get trey lance some looks in with the starters in the game. the biggest goal will be getting out healthy and finding a good rhythm before it counts for real on september 12 in detroit. >> i think having all of the guys out there would be really nice. getting into a good rhythm.

kumasi: let's end with this one this evening. a special parade in san jose brought joy to children fighting serious illnesses. the cruising for coastal kids home care parade included old-fashioned cars and first responder vehicles. the route went from presentation high school to st. john vna school. >> a lot of our children are on ventilators or have respiratory issues. this event allows them to come out, be outside, but be in their own cars with their own families, and participate and have a parade go by them. it is like a personal parade. it's just amazing. kumasi: this is the second
