halloween time is back with spook-tacular experiences in disneyland and disney california adventure parks! >> building a better bay area. this is abc 7 news. >> tonight, all eyes are on strawberry as the caldor fire encroaches on the resort town near lake tahoe. firefighters conducted tactical burns. it was a critical day, as the weather could possibly turn tomorrow. that evening. you are watching abc 7 news at 11:00. the caldor fire is now 238 square miles. much of the growth is on the eastern edge, toward lake tahoe. fire crews report 9% containment. this burn is one way crews are trying to fervently save the

community of strawberry, about a 3 hour drive south of lake tahoe. i feel like resort looking like a smoke choked gordonstoun. -- ghost town. reporter: hazy skies leaving behind a sense of uranus in south lake tahoe as the caldor fire inches closer. >> the fire will probably be heading in the north-north easterly direction. reporter: the flames burning 12 miles south of the resort town which is usually by stilling at -- bustling at this time of year. >> it is sad, there was nothing from the -- nothing but the casino. reporter: their visit from oklahoma a lonely one, even worse for businesses. businesses closed up, parking lots empty. the golf course, even, depressing as hayes looms in the background. the air turning to ash. >> at 4:30 in the afternoon, the

streetlamps were coming on. it looked like something out of "wizard of oz," scary stuff. poer: jim has lived in south lake tahoe for 32 years. >> the worst we have seen, by far. reporter: a couple hours ago, our apy was around 150. now it is close to 300. from our view behind us, you can barely see the mountains in this bed of smoke. inside that bed of smoke, streets clearly visible. -- barely visible. >> i think people have had it. reporter: the fire chief tells us it is a long road ahead. >> with the wind now, the inversion layer has lifted, so the fire activity will increase. >> if we have to evacuate, we will evacuate. reporter: how freire crews say the next few days will be -- calfire crews say that my few days will be difficult. as far as whether southlake

could face effectuation warnings tomorrow, -- south lake could face evacuation warnings tomorrow, we are told that anything could be possible with the wind tonight. stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. >> the calfire and others burning in california having a major impact on our air quality in the bay area. drew: the smoke, you could see it today, smell it as well. our air quality some of the poorest it has been this season. we had intense heat. 84 in the city, the warmest day so far this year. 87, oakland. 96 in san jose. 101 in napa. 103 in concord. air quality right now, the immediate coast line has the bay shoreline, it is still moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups. tomorrow, similar story, moderate to unhealthy air quality.

could stay safe, but over 100, we've got to skip it. cornell: over 100 aqi is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. by morning, the air-quality map was moving from orange to red in some parts of the bay area. from ira tower cam, the golden gate bridge a mere shadow, and from the east bay, downtown oakland was hazy. the bay bridge vanishing and they smoke along with the san francisco skyline. a track event in oakland got canceled. >> we were going to have a team intrasquad ray san joaquin beelard park, but our coach -- race at walking ballard park, but our coach sent out an email saying it was unhealthy. cornell: the heat was enough to send jim and his mom to the movies for comfort. >> my mother is elderly and her heart is not good, so we were happy to go inside to a movie.

luz: we are blurring her parents' faces for safety. her dad worked in afghanistan in projects backed by the u.s. >> he started in the bar. he is finishing in the war. everything has gone to waste. luz: she says her parents were blacklisted by the taliban and found a letter by her door that read -- >> you are being watched. luz: congress monroe, represents the largest afghan community in the country. how many bay area families do you know of that are waiting to hear back from the doj? >> 50 cases. luz: according to the congressman, the doj is now aware of her parents' situation. >> it is up to the executive branch in terms of how they conduct a particular rescue mission. luz: as the parents like themselves at home at weight -- and wait, their daughter is thinking about the time they fled.

kumasi: an east bay high school student is dead after a car crash last night. the crash is still under investigation, and police have not officially released any names of the victims. but at livermore high school tonight, classmates and friends came together to pay tribute to the teen. tim johns was there. tim: a somber scene on the football field of livermore high school tonight. hundreds came out to pay their respects to hunter, who lost his life friday after being in a car crash with four other students. his wrestling coach tells abc 7 the young man's family is understandably shaken by what has happened. >> you can see in their face that they knew their son was loud, they knew they did a good job with him, and like any parent, they are devastated that they do not get to see him

the documents allege that standing your balwani could trigger ptsd symptoms for holmes. the 37-year-old holmes is accused of leading and -- misleading investors on her now field blood testing start up. a new snack in building a ballpark development in oakland. alameda county officials say they will delay a september vote regarding financing. the a's are asking the county to give up a portion of its property taxes on the stadium site to help pay for infrastructure costs. oakland has said without the county's help, it is unlikely the project can move forward. the a's hope to have a fal vote by october, which is the end of baseball season. vta will tpassengers. like real service has been suspended for the past three months -- light rail service has been suspended for the past

our overnight lows first thing on your sunday. the sun is effective at forming us up pretty quickly. by 9:00 a.m., we are in the 70's and 80's already, and by lunchtime, we will likely see spots already into the 90's and will continue to warm throughout the afternoon. tomorrow is no picnic. we are tracking intense heat away from the coast. we will hit 99 in concord, 90 in san jose, 94 in santa rosa. oakland 82. 86 in san mateo. san francisco, despite not being in the 80's tomorrow, it is still going to feel warm up with a high of 74 degrees. by monday, start to see heat relief close to the ocean water, 60's and 70's, but still warm inland. in the 90's. tuesday is going to feel very nice. by tuesday, our warmest spots only in the 80's.

makes -- damaging winds when it makes landfall tomorrow. we want to take you out right now to take a live look at new orleans tonight, mandatory evacuations issued for some residents. the mayor's urging people to leave, and many people are taking that advice. reporter: ida is rapidly is rapi intensifying as it closes in on the louisiana coast, forecast to potentially become a category 4 storm before making landfall. >> the wind speed at landfall is projected to be sustained in the neighborhood of 140 miles per hour. reporter: mandatory evacuations in place for thousands outside the levee system in marlins -- in new orleans. other parts of the city jammed with traffic. >> that traffic was for miles, leaping up towards baton rouge. reporter: homes and businesses now boarded up. many spent the day waiting in

long lines for gas or sandbags. >> we are hoping that when monday morning comes we are not calling insurance. reporter: households stocking up with 10 days of supplies, including fuel for generators. in mississippi, patients are being moved further north, away from the coast. >> we have requested and received the support of the federal government to have additional assets to move patients. reporter: ida is expected to make landfall 16 years to the day after katrina. >> every storm is different. they all bring their own challenges. but i also want you to know that we are not the same state we were 16 years ago. reporter: president hopes katrina's system of levees, pumps, and seawalls will help protect the city. >> it is going to be pushing water up the whole time. the water is my biggest concern. reporter: ida is expected to make landfall sometime on a afternoon or evening.

kumasi: and drew tuma joining us now. you have been tracking ida's path. drew: we just got the latest information from the national hurricane center, and we find the storm is strengthening qukl, n a major category winds are 115 miles per hour, sustained, meaning constant winds, gusting to 125 miles per hour. it is moving to the northwest at about 50 miles per hour. we anticipate the storm to continue to strengthen as it gets closer to the gulf coast. the forecasted track by early tomorrow morning, we are expecting a category four hurricane, 130 mile-per-hour winds, and then it makes landfall right around lunchtime and will quickly we can, but those winds will bring damage to the coastline along with anywhere from 10 to 15 inches of rain. as it moves on shore, it is going to rapidly weaken, but the next 12 hours along the louisiana coast will be the most

dangerous. kumasi: now to the pandemic and the growing crisis facing hospitals in some parts of the country. hospitalizations have jumped 541% in just two months nationwide. pediatric admissions are also reaching record highs. on average, more than 300 children are landing at hospitals around the country every day. >> we are seeing younger patients get sick and die. it has been awful. kumasi: with hospitals hitting a breaking point, hundreds of federal medical teams are deploying to hotspots in the south. deaths are surging. the u.s. deaths are up more than 173% in the last month. pop-up morgues are dealing with the unprecedented demand in central florida and oregon. this september marks 20 years since the 9/11 attacks.

kumasi: northern california is home to wine country, but now a new wine experience is taking hold in the east bay. i took a tour at a black-owned tasting room in alameda county. you would expect to see cute restaurants and shops on park street in alameda, a safari, not so much, until you step inside caribou wine lounge. >> what we are doing is a is a a

welcome. kumasi: the owner wanted to create a space not only for women and people of color to enjoy wine, but for those who craft it and sell it. so not only can you drink and dance and have a good time, you can also check out wines by other people of color. -- by winemakers of color. >> we are under 1% of winemakers in the country. to create a space that not only showcases our talents but also lets us feel welcome and included is core to who i am. kumasi: also core to who she is, science. she also works full-time in clinical outcomes at stanford health care. intrigued by the science of winemaking, she says pursuing that passion was not exactly easy. >> we do not have that exposed to us as a community, as a culture, because it is an industry that has been closed to us. it was the allies that supported me, that helped me learn how to craft the wines, that helped

chris: when chris bassitt was hit with a line drive earlier this month in the head, baseball obviously took a backseat. bassitt had a fracture and several cuts in his face which required surgery, scary for everyone involved. today bassitt was back in the dugout. he took out the lineup card to the field before the game. bassitt told reporters he does not remember the actual impact, but he will not hesitate to get back on the mound again. >> the demons, so to speak, that could haunt you on the mound a little bit, i know i am a little bit of a messed up individual, but i do not really have any concern about getting back on the amount.
