moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. today's been a rough day. and there's no bones about it the kaldore fire worsening by the hour as cruise battle the flames in intense heat. latest from el dorado county as south lake tahoe braces to evacuate tonight disasters across the country tens of thousands of people told to leave their homes due to the threat of fires or hurricanes as the kaldor fire encroaches on south lake tahoe. hurricane. ida has slammed new orleans. there's a lot here the city's pubs will no doubt. be put to the test here. in the bay area residents with loved ones in louisiana told me they're fearing another katrina

style disaster actually. in there when the storm hit when the lights went off and the winds it was something that i hope i never have to experience ever again. scientists say humans must change their behavior, or we can expect more of these extreme climate events. there are a lot of ways in whhtl warming is happening at the global scale and tough to see those images. good evening. i'm jr. stone. you're watching abc 7 news at 11 live here on abc 7 and wherever you stream we have team coverage tonight on both hurricane, ida, and the kaldor fire. we begin with abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma tracking those breaking fire conditions. yeah. jr this fire. just had an explosive growth today. it's now in the top 20 largest fires in california history. it's at 168,000 acres right now and day, the biggest growth was on the eastern side of this fire cal fire said today that it grew

about two and a half miles on the eastern flank today flames winds and terrain all came in alignment today for that explosive growth. here is highway 50 strawberry twin bridges over here a sierra at tahoe. we have myers and here south lake tahoe. we have a lot of flames in this area tonight within this canyon and we have a few days ahead of some dangerous winds. in fact, we'll throw wins for tomorrow and look at the direction from the southwest to the northeast which is going to push this fire to the east once again, so it's for that fact. we have a red flag warning that will begin at 11 am tomorrow for these wins gusting 20 to 35 miles per hour. not only around the fire but also around the dixie fire as well. so dangerous fire conditions the next two days future tracker wind gusts tomorrow afternoon these wins gusting close to 30 miles per hour and then we do it all again on tuesday. so jr. firefighters have a 40 hour window of some dangerous fire conditions around the calder fire. thanks so much drew.

this is a live look from the sierra at tahoe resort via an alert wildfire camera, and it's hard to make out what that is. just a wall of tonight abc 7 news reporter stephanie. sierra was in meyers about eight miles away from the resort. she found families racing to get out. the kaldor fire moving fast tonight as winds are picking up. we are right along highway 50 just about four miles south of myers. we're seeing homes go up in flames in this area as fire crews are battling the worst night yet in extreme heat 15 days into the kaldore fire crews face the flames in record heat the fire fierce as it rips down homes along highway 50 just south of the town of myers the sky turning orange as the city faces. auditory evacuation orders. how long have you lived here in myers twenty years. is this the worst you've ever seen it? yes. it's just horrible drew morati

their families will be notified barton's emergency department remains open for emergency health needs only. well across the country another disaster tonight hurricane. ida is barreling through louisiana jamaican landfall in the state this afternoon. the storm is being blamed for at least one death. someone was killed by a fallen tree. today's hurricane left more than one million customers without power in, mississippi and louisiana with the entire city of new orleans in the dark. there are reports that 22 barges broke loose in new orleans because of the storm officials. trade they may hit infrastructure abc 7 news reporter elizabeth schulze has a closer. look at ida's impact. hurricane aida is ripping through louisiana. news station in its path ida coming ashore as a powerful category 4 storm and staying as a cat for for several more hours. this is one of the strongest

storms to make landfall here. in modern times hurricane hunters flying into the storms stunning 17 mile wide eye. after landfall catastrophic storm surge of up to eight feet wins up to 150 miles an hour. we are here in the heart of new orleans just as this storm has made landfall you can feel how strong these winds are. this is the mississippi. this storm is testing the city's flood protection system those systems and levies were built up. after hurricane, katrina exactly 16 years ago officials. here are still worried about heavy rain causing flash floods. this is a very dangerous and a very real situation that inviting visiting fema for a briefing saying the agency deployed 2,400 employees to region as soon as the storm passes we're going to put this we're going to put the country's full might behind the rescue and recovery now the mississippi river and the french quarter are just behind me here usually lit up, but right now, it's darkness

new orleans says the entire city is without power citing catastrophic transmission damage. it makes the conditions here a lot more dangerous while this flash flood warning is currently in effect officials do still tell us so that those water pumps which are used to get the water off the streets are running using self generated power elizabeth. halsey abc news new orleans and the latest from the national hurricane center, ida is weakening from that maximum category for it's now down to a category 1 storm with the winds of 75 miles per hour, but it has soaked a huge portion of louisiana some spots some more than a of rainfall a wide swath of 4 to 9 inches of rainfall from the storm now the storm continues to press off to the north and east it will weaken as it moves off, but still monday winds of 60 miles per hour. it will bring more rainfall to parts of the south and the mid-atlantic we could expect anything from two to six inches of rain over the next couple of days jr. thanks so much drew as hurricane katrina aida that is bears down

on louisiana. many bay area residents with loved ones. there are fearing for their safety abc 7 news reporter tim john spoke with one woman who says she was up all night as her family evacuated from new orleans. 16 years to the day after hurricane katrina devastated the city of new orleans hurricane. ida is now pummeling louisiana michelle morgan now lives in berkeley, but is in new orleans native who lived through trina i relive that every august so it's and especially with another storm now it makes it even harder for me now morgan open tells me she hardly slept saturday evening instead. she was up all night worrying about her loved ones back at home most of whom flood the city fearing another katrina style disaster because no one's home. we they don't know what they're going to be coming home to unfortunately or if they can actually return. well, ida is presenting its own challenges morgan outen says the might of katrina left a psychological scar on many new

local departments. they specialize in urban search and rescue and are trained to deal with dangerous storm surges. well scientists say while the kaldore fire and hurricane. ida may seem like two very different disasters. they're actually very much related abc 7 news reporter lose pena spoke to a stanford climate expert who says these extreme events may only get worse as the planet continues to warm. california is officially on a new climate experts say the proof is this heat wave strike conditions and another record-setting fire season cal fire and scientists take the measurements knew that the vegetation was very very dry along the gulf coast hurricane item making landfall as a category 4 louisiana's governor categorizing it as one of the strongest storms to make landfall in modern times. sat down with stanford's climate expert dr. noah diffenbal to understand how these extreme

weather events affecting opposite sides of the country are ultimately connected the primary way in which they're connected. is that global warming is happening at the global scale and and so all parts of the world are experiencing that research shows global warming is changing the conditions in which hurricanes are happening. the ocean is storing more heat than ever the heat in the in the upper layers of the ocean is increasing that's providing more energy for storms. we're seeing not just stronger storms. but also this rapid intensification of storms dr. boss says 90% of the heat that has been added over the last century is in the ocean. he says this is triggering what could be a category one hurricane to intensify and grow into a stronger category decades ago, you know, maybe one out of a hundred storms would do that and now we're seeing like a 5% chance that's fires intensify. he says the smoke from fires will create more greenhouse gases and air quality will continue to worsen should we

cobble tonight. we're at least five rockets have been fired towards cobbles international airport. we understand the rockets exploded in the air white house. as the attack did not interrupt operations at the airport. this latest incident is happening with less than 48 hours to go to get americans out of afghanistan and us military officials. say a drone strike over. night killed a suicide car bomber suspected of preparing to attack cobbles airport. the military says the strikee against a quote credible threat and came hours after the us had warned. another terrorist attack was highly likely an afghan official tells abc news that six civilians were killed four of them children. this attack came just after another us drone strike took out two high-level isis k members the fact that two of these

individuals are no longer walking on the face of the earth. that's a good thing. the state department is again warning americans to stay away from cobble's airport citing specific credible threats roughly 250 americans are still seeking to get out. this is the most dangerous time in an already extraordinarily dangerous mission these last couple of days and so we will do think possible to keep to keep people safe, but the risk is very high president biden on sunday watched the flag draped remains of 13 fallen service members return home to us soil at dover air force base. the us military says they died in an isis kay attack at the airport on thursday the fallen include 23 year old marine corps sergeant nicole g from roseville all just infants or children when america's longest war began. and a relief mission is taking shape here in the east bay to help afghan refugee families who are trying to come to the bay

area abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has details on the community effort including an update on a local nonprofit's fight to get its employees out of afghanistan. the purposes to show them that we care a sunday strategy session at concord's newer islamic and cultural community center how to help refugees escaping afghanistan nasser. abdiyani says his phone is ringing 24/7 with desperate calls from friends and family. they're calling and they're asking to please help us out. please get us out of this country and unfortunately our hands are tight. these volunteers can't help afghans escape, but they can assist families who are able to make it to the concord area. we don't know how many people are coming when they're gonna here, so we just want to be prepared with all the necessities to help traumatize families who may b we would likr them first and foremost compassion, but then also language services are homes. showing them around not just the neighborhood but how to grocery shop the community center is now

collecting donations for refugees on its website the city pledging its support. it's been really challenging to watch all of the trauma on tv, but we can do our part to help those people that are coming here and that gives me a lot of help. team gary and i to leave the premises meantime bay area nonprofit routes of peace founders heidi and gary kuhn working around the clock from istanbul turkey to get their 76 employees out of kabul overnight their bus turned away from the airport after 10 hours due to security threats despite in august 31st us troop with joel deadline. heidi is not giving up. let's roll. we have two more to get these deserving afghans. out to safety where americans we will find a way in the east bay cornell bernard abc 7 news and keep in mind. there are a lot of ways that you can help afghanistan refugees for ideas.

go to abc 7 news.com slash take action on that same page. you'll also find some supportive resources, especially for veterans during this difficult time. by meteorologist drew tom at drew we've heard about the weather in tahoe and the gulf coast. but what about here in the bay area we'll find better air quality moving in over the next couple of days jr. some cooler temperatures as well, especially by tuesday air quality right now. it's pretty across much of the bay shoreline from san francisco to oakland to san jose closer to the ocean. you can see some fresh air those green dots we do have unhealthy air as you start to move into the central valley right now. here's a smoke forecast tomorrow morning. we wake up to moderate air quality once again, but that onshore wind which is responsible for that red flag warning close to the calder fire. it's really gonna help to alleviate most of the smoke from our atmosphere by monday evening. we're at fresh air good air quality quality and that will continue tuesday as well the air quality of the next couple of days tomorrow. it's mainly moderate tuesday.

we're good to moderate and then by wednesday and thursday, it's good no matter where you live in the bay area temperatures right now. we're down to 57 in the city 60 in oakland 66 in san jose a cool 56 in santa rosa 72 right now in san ramon. these numbers are about five to eight degrees cooler compared to this time last night to the cooling trend. it's underway overnight tonight. we'll find temperatures in the mid 50s to mid. is we have coastal cloud cover developing right now will find some fog spilling over the city into parts of the east bay first thing tomorrow morning future weather hour by hour. there's that fog over the city patchy fog for parts of the east bay shoreline, maybe even some patchy fog in parts of the south bay, but a marine layer is still pretty compressed at this hour tomorrow. we'll find temperatures by lunchtime and our warmest spots in the 80s, but we do anticipate going back into the 90s and our hottest spots 85 the high in san jose tomorrow the same in santa clara 84 the and sunnyvale, so it's a warm day in the south bay along the peninsula. it's warm 84 redwood city 81

[cheers and applause] it makes you smile. robert paylor said the 10 yards he walked today were the most important of his life. he was paralyzed in 2017 when he broke his neck playing in the rugby national championship. he was a quadriplegic, but robert has learned to use his hands again. he is making progress on walking again too. he graduated from cal with a business degree, and congratulations go out to him. something to smile about.

dropped to 13%. on the gulf coast, hurricane ida is barreling through louisiana after making landfall this afternoon. >> this is one of the strongest storms to make landfall here in modern times. j.r.: the storm hit 16 years to the day after hurricane katrina. ida is blamed for at least one death. more than one million customers are without power across mississippi and louisiana, including the entire city of new orleans. officials have warned residents they will not be able to rescue anyone who needs help until daybreak. chris: folks- drew: folks on the gulf coast wish the rain would stop. what we see tomorrow is an increase in the winds, which is dangerous for the fires. a red flag warning will begin at 11:00 a.m.. this includes the caldor fire and dixie fire, where winds will gust as high as 65 miles per hour. the winds out of the southwest, gusting over 25 miles per hour

eastit is now a category 1 storm. the track does have it weakening as it heads to the north and east. as it heads north and east, by midweek it will likely drop two to six inches of additional rainfall. j.r.: thank you so much. the northwest coast of mexico is dealing with significant flooding in the aftermath of hurricane nora. it made landfall as a category one storm not far from porto viar--te poured into the street. one young boy was killed and several others are reported missing. the hope we will return to normal from covid-19 by this fall is fading fast across america. hospitalizations from the pandemic are up across the country, with the south seeing the most admissions. some hospitals are facing a shortage of oxygen.
