yesterday, getting more pronounced today. looking at temperatures coming up about 70 degrees through the bay noontime. 80's will arrive in lent, but by the afternoon, temperatures top out in the low 70's in oakland. low 80's in san jose and still low 80's inland with a lemoore haze in the livermore valley. >> now to the developing news out of louisiana, the damage following hurricane ida is now being described as catastrophic. the entire city lost power overnight. a flashlight emergency was declared. as the sun is coming up, we are getting a closer look at the damage left behind. we have a live look at the conditions in new orleans. this is biloxi this morning showing you what things are looking like. the national hurricane center saying ida just weakened to a tropical storm overnight did make landfall as a category 4

hurricane. right now, flooding is still a major concern. tj parker is in new orleans with a look at conditions. tj: overnight, the brunt of ida's fury slamming the louisiana coast line. emergency officials getting calls from people who did not evacuate the barrier island of grand isle saying water in their home is up to their chest. one nearby town, authorities warning people a levy is failing. >> people have sustained damage to their homes. we have a senior center, independent living. they had about one third of their roof get damaged. tj: earlier, bars that got loose slammed into a bridge making it nearly impossible for rescuers to reach people. >> i'm told the vessel has sunk. those folks are going to have to use a ferry for a couple of months. tj: the largest health system in

louisiana has been forced to evacuate 66 patients from two hospitals. in houma, powerful winds tearing the roof off this building. the storm surge and wins so powerful, they temporarily reversed the flow of the mississippi river near new orleans. the u.s. geological survey calling it extremely uncommon. overnight, more than one million power customers in louisiana and mississippi were without electricity. cameras capturing the moment all of new orleans went dark. ida rowing ashore 16 years to the day after hurricane katrina. the storm now a major test for the emergency system which was not in place when the levees failed during katrina. >> it was built for this moment. tj: in nearby st. bernardst. bee parish, the parish president warns recovery will take months, not weeks. >>

a task force to louisiana in the wake of hurricane ida. cruise packed up equipment yesterday. that is a team of 14 local agencies. they specialize in urban search-and-rescue and are trained to deal with dangerous storm surges. >> we have specialized personnel with adequate equipment to mitigate any emergency pertaining to flooding, swift water, static water rescue. we're looking forward to stepping up and helping our fellow americans. >> oaklands fire says this will not affect their response to any local emergencies. they feel they have enough staffing to that end. the task force also deployed after hurricane katrina. they are prepared to stay in the storm zone up to three weeks if needed. >> t a large wildfires are burning across california right now. rightted to provide an update. that is going to be at 1:00 this afternoon.

we are expected to hear from fema, calfire and the u.s. forest service. all of this coming as the caldor fire runs closer to south lake tahoe. you can see rising from the basin. several resorts are in that area, now under evacuation orders or warnings. barton memorial hospital in south lake tahoe has evacuated all of his patients -- it's patients. amy: firefightersrefightersrefis down highway 50 in el dorado county right now's trying to save property. they say they are on the defensive with fierce winds making it tough to fight back that fire right now. this fire did burn down homes along highway 50 and is still raging this morning. we got video in overnight of a hospital that is evacuating. barton tomorrow has moved 16

this is quite a shift from what we heard last week from this fire. firefighters then saying they thought they had turned a corner. firefighters found themselves on the defensive this weekend. longtime residents say this is the worst they have ever seen it. >> it hurts because we love this town and we don't want to see it burn. >> the concern today is the increased temperatures. the hottest day of this firefight that has been going on and then human to do levels very low. amy: firefighters say they are expecting today which could mean an increase in fire activity. they say they are stretched very thin, but help has been coming in from across the country and they have about 3500 people fighting this fire. they are all working back to back shifts. right now, focusing on saving lives and property rather than fighting the fire with the intense winds right now. they say that is all they can do. kumasi: thank you, amy.

the natural disasters do not. that storm, which made landfal s now downgraded to a tropical storm. jobina: this morning, ida is moving northeast from louisiana into mississippi. more than one million people are without power in new orleans and concerns are growing about severe flooding. he a live look right now at new orleans. we see a clear sky as the sun begins to come up. president biden has approved louisiana's request for disaster declaration. at least one person is dead after ida slept through the state. deputies found the body after responding to reports of a fallen tree at a home in prairieville. either damaged several hospitals which had to evacuate patients during a covid surge. >> we have lost some windows, pieces of rooms. it is over one of the elevators. it actually blew off the

buildings that we were not able to use the elevator. >> the people of louisiana are good and resilient people. i can tell you, we are going to go through this. jobina: local authorities expect it will be months before committees can fully recover. ida is expected to weaken over the next several days. let's check in with lisa for a closer look at the path. lisa: this certainly is a stubborn storm and it stayed over warm water or low-lying areas where the water temperature was in the 80's. you can see, still a lot of circulation to it as it influences mississippi and the panhandle of florida. it is right now at 45 miles an hour. gusts to 80 and look at the track of this moving to the north at eight. by later on today, looking a 35 mile an hour winds. heavy rain through northern alabama, nashville into western tennessee. and then it goes into new york and new jersey as we get into tuesday. wind still looking over 25 miles

an hour and taking the rain with it up into new york state. this is a long path all week long and we are looking at the chance of tornadoes still down and around the gulf coast states with very heavy rain. of course, you heard there is no power. certainly a bad situation that we will continue to track throughout the mississippi river valley and northeast within the next few days. reggie: thank you. we spoke with a bay area transplant who is worried about relatives back home in new orleans. michelle lived through hurricane katrina before moving to berkeley. she says she hardly slept saturday night. she says her family evacuated fearing another katrina type disaster. >> they don't know what they are going to be coming home to or if they can actually return. reggie: she says no matter what happens, the people of new orleans are resilient and will recover. kumasi: scientists say while the hurricane -- hurricane ida and

the caldor fire seem unrelated, they say these extreme events may only get worse as the planet continues to warm. " warming is happenin scale andf the world are experiencing that. kumasi: research shows global warming is changing the conditions in which hurricanes are happening. the ocean is storing more heat than ever and as fires intensify, experts say this creates more greenhouse gases causing air quality to worsen. >> there is some indication that as global warming increases, we could get more frequent occurrence of these air stagnation events. kumasi: experts say the solution is a different energy system and to reduce greenhouse gases fast. reggie: this morning, flights out of kabul airport continue after five rockets were fired at the airport.

an alert was issued and all lanes were blocked while authorities investigated. lanes have since reopened. as we check out the graphics, i do want to point out other issues we are following. fog in the north bay, you are going to run into low visibility as you are making her way through kaiser villette and santa rosa as well. closer to san francisco, you're going to experience the on the golden gate bridge. interestingly, the chp has not issued a fog advisory. we are seeing our slowdowns get slower. about 47 minutes for that ride into antioch and concord. it 60 minute ride. things are moving at the limit at the bay bridge. also want to let you know that the santa clara valley transportation authority is offering free light rail rides through september 12. the agency just restarted light rail service for the first time since the deadly mass shooting at its railyard.

yesterday's restart coincided with a preseason football game between the las vegas raiders and 49ers at levi's stadium. let's check in with lisa. lisa: starting out with our tower camera.you can see some he upper levels with a little bit of smoke. air quality certainly getting better for most of us. 56 in san francisco. there is fog along sonoma county. you can see that in the mixture of smoke and haze in marine layer this morning. as we get through the afternoon, the onshore flow is going to increase and allow for the smoke to be pushed to the east of us. it is in the 50's in north bay and the air quality is good from san rafael to san francisco. moderate over in oakland as well as east bay valleys and san jose. as we look at the mountains, higher relative fema the with onshore winds. gusty winds coming into play for the mountains. red flag warning for the west slopes all day and then we get

his mother heard his screams, ran outside and punched a mountain lion to make it let go of her son. the boy is expected to recover. wildlife officials found the mountain lion and killed it. kumasi: the seann ego zoo just welcomed a very rare white rhino. the baby girl was born last sunday weighing 125 pounds. she will grow to be up to 5000 pounds when she is older. since 1972, the san diego zoo has been breeding the species in captivity. 104 baby white rhinos have been born there. a population of just 18,000 left in the world, a baby rhino does not have a name yet. this is just so cute. ok. it was a great day for 49ers fans, especially for this couple.
