>> now from abc 7, live breaking news. >> there is fire activity happening in california that we have never seen before. ama: scary thought. evacuation orders for all of south lake tahoe tonight. thousands of people rushed to get out in bumper-to-bumper traffic. >> i've been sitting in traffic now for 40 minutes, and i only moved about three cars. ama: what a terrible scene. good evening. larry: here is a look at the map. all of the red we are showing you means mandatory evacuations. you have to get up because highways 50, 88, 89 are closed. residents have to go east to nevada or gitmo north to get to interstate 80. stephanie sierra is live in south lake tahoe with the very latest on what is a very anxious, tense situation. reporter: it certainly is.

we just got an update from calfire a few minutes ago. they are telling us the majority of neighborhoods in south lake tahoe have evacuated. that they still have cruise on the current -- on the ground going door to door to ensure that is a case. the big concern now is the flames moving northeast atop echo to stomach. with winds moving as fast as they are, fire crews have a long road ahead. we are told it is expected to be the worst is crews battle those high winds and dry conditions. thank fully, the sierra at tahoe resort is still standing. miles of land surrounding it burned. homes across the street, gone. families in south lake are fearing that outcome. a couple hours ago, the traffic we just showed you along highway 50 was at a standstill as 22,000 people were trying to evacuate town. >> i'm not even really thinking about that. i'm thinking more like, loading up is going to be a waste of time. you have to be ready. >> where just trying to survive

and take what we've got with us. we will prevail at some point. we are pretty stubborn. we don't give up. reporter: we are back with you live with this hazy view and soft lake tahoe. smoke worsening by the hour. calfire did reiterate to us, as we just spoke to them a few minutes ago, they are expecting more extreme fire growth tonight. they are telling us they were able to do water drops both with helicopter and aircraft at the western and northeastern sides of the fire. that is good news. the heat, low humidity levels, and of course, this wind is a huge concern tonight. live in south like tahoe, stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. dan: before you go, i know you talked with firefighters moment by moment. what are you hearing from them on the ground about where this fire is headed next? reporter: right now, as of our last update, still north of highway 50 at echo lake.

there was upper echo lake, than lower echo lake. it was burning in that middle ground for quite some time. it has inched northeast. they are very concerned it is going to jump echo summit. that is the concern as it moves a mile from myers and into christmas valley. all of this happening very rapidly. . we are seeing the smoke increase here in south like tahoe. certainly a long road ahead for these fire crews. dan: no question. everyone there. thank you very much. ama: let's continue our coverage by going to meteorologist drew tuma with a closer look at the weather in the tahoe area. drew: the winds are gusting over 20 miles an hour. we will take you to the northeastern side of the fire, closest to south lake tahoe. that is where a lot of the action is at this hour. . you can see highway 50, sierra tahoe, echo summit. then south lake tahoe. the reason for all of this concern, overlay the current winds now with this fire. you can see them coming from the southwest to the northeast. that is going to push that fire

potentially down into the basin over the next couple of days. that is why firefighters are so concerned. red flag warning now in effect for the calder fire and much of northern california. winds gusting as high as 35 miles per hour. right now, we have the southwest winds. we do it all again tomorrow afternoon. the winds are fierce, gusting well over 30 miles per hour. ama: thank you for that update. aerial footage shows the intense conditions firefighters are up against. you can see it is just a wall of smoke and this flames too. officials are giving an update as the fire bears down on south lake tahoe. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is live in the newsroom with that part of the story. reporter: firefighters were making good progress yesterday. containment at the caldor fire was nearly 20%. but then the weather changed. the fire took off. now a community that so many of us here in the bay area love and visit often is being evacuated in a big hurry. >> caldor is a real tough one

for us. reporter: too tough and too close to heavily populated south lake tahoe. the caldor fire continues its devastating march, consuming more than 20,000 additional acres in just the past when he for hours. >> it has been burning in heavy timber, in deep canyon gorge of the highway 50 corridor between south lake tahoe and sacramento. and very difficult terrain as well as conditions. reporter: the fires dangerous spread far -- prompted a warning, and then an evacuation order for surrounding communities. >> there has been a tremendous amount of work over the weekend with all of the different local, state, and federal partners working in the south lake tahoe area, going out and knocking on doors, making sure that all of those folks knew. reporter: the evacuation zone extends through portions of three counties, el dorado, alpine, and amador.

with the westbound direction close, evacuees are being told to head along highway 50 east toward nevada. the evacuation includes barton memorial hospital in south lake tahoe, and cons as a red flag warning is going into effect for the northern sierra. as big as it is with at least 177,000 acres burned, the caldor fire is still smaller than the state's other large inferno. the dixie fire, which has consumed more than 770,000 acres. the second largest fire in california history. >> we haven't had fires burn from one side of the sierras to the other. we did with the dixie, now we have with the call door. -- caldor. two times in our history and they are happening this month. i need to be really cognizant that there is fire activity happening in california that we have never seen before. reporter: he -- drew talked about the winds. stephanie talked about the head of the fire. and other concern going into the next 24 hours is whether embers

will spark more spot fires miles ahead of the main event. with the calder fire five miles or even less from south lake tahoe, calfire says they are not making any predictions, anything in the vicinity is at risk. in the newsroom, laura anthony, abc 7 news. ama: thank you so much. there is a strange twist to the cache fire in lake county but destroyed it of homes earlier this month. wayne freedman tells us a woman is being charged after she grabbed a fire hose to protect her property. reporter: when the cache fire roared through lake county on august 18, it moved fast, burned hot, and destroyed 60 homes. those conditions primed for disaster. >> we had red flag conditions, northeast winds at 28 plus miles an hour. reporter: a lot of heroes emerged from the fire. they included rebecca morrissey who helped rescue burned goats that had been trapped in an enclosure.

three of the goats would survive the inferno. >> this is crazy. i grew up on this road. all of these houses have been here my whole life. reporter: now rebecca morrissey finds herself in trouble because of this photo, showing her fighting the same fire with a hose and attachment that local police say she admitted taking during another blaze in june. even now, another 500 to 1000 feet of fire district hose remains missing. >> if you stole something from my fire district, i'm going to prosecute you. we are not picking on just her, it is anybody. reporter: rebecca morrissey was not available to speak today, but fire officials say it is common for them to leave hose on the ground in case of a flareup. pick up the equipment later or locals return it. >> if you happen to pick it up and drop it off at the station in good faith, i'm going to give you a soda or a candy bar. reporter: a private citizen picking oppose and keeping it, that is unusual and expensive, at $300 per 100 feet.

taking a hard line this time. what is the message you are sending your? >> when somebody doesn't evacuate, you put my personnel in jeopardy because they are going to stay behind and rescue that one person. a are not trained as firefighters. they are not dressed as firefighters. and they don't understand fire behavior. reporter: rebecca morrissey will be arraigned in lake county tomorrow. in the north bay, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. dan: developing news in san francisco. . a container ship in the bay has been evacuated after more than a dozen crewmember got sick. san francisco fire department says 19 of 21 crewmembers on board the global stryker are experiencing flulike symptoms. the department has safely evacuated them off the ship. . they acted quickly, since coronavirus and the flu have similar symptoms. >> san francisco fire department immediately established our multi casualty incident protocols for this incident, which includes our covid-19 protocols. reporter: the --

lights -- lights -- light rail service has returned. trains are operating on the orange line between mountain view and alum rock. there is limited service on the green line along 1st street and san jose, and the best bridge will continue to operate. vta is free through september 12. caltrans service report -- return to pre-pandemic levels today. there are seven enhancements and new options for writers -- riders. dan: new developments with the covid surge. it is not a travel bans, but the european union has taken the united states off its safe travel list because of the rise in cases here. california may be turning the corner, the seven-day positivity rate dropped to 4.7%. the first time it has been under 5% in about a month. things don't look so good in mendocino county where doctors say hospitals are running out of beds and the icu's are full.

dan: we just got an update from calfire on the caldor fire, ranging in the sierra. we start with good news. no buildings have been lost in the town of strawberry. but the fire has crossed highway 88, and is inching closer to kirkwood resort. we will keep you updated moment by moment. parts of alpine county now have an evacuation warning. ama: developing news from louisiana where the scope of the devastation caused by hurricane ida is becoming clear.

these images from the air show the widespread flooding along both coast communities. half of the state is without electricity, including the entire city of new orleans. thousands of miles of transmission lines have been damaged. at least one death has been reported. a lot of people dealing with a lot of bad weather out there. dan: it has been tough here and back of course at the gulf coast. sandhya patel is tracking all of it. sandhya: that's right. i want to show you the latest on ida. it has weakened to a tropical depression. heavy, pounding rain and flash flooding continues along the gulf coast. made landfall as a category four in louisiana with 170 mile an hour plus winds. it is now packing winds of 45 miles an hour as a depression moving north northeast at nine. on this path, rainfall, flooding will continue. there is still a risk of tornadoes in that area. it will weaken and continue to fall apart as it moves out by

midweek across much of the northeast -- the carolinas. definitely something to watch. also watching the smoky skies. this is from prospect in the sierra nevada right now where it is hard to see. winds here, the onshore winds, the same wind direction pushing all of our smoke in that direction. they do have a red flag warning until 11:00 p.m. wednesday for the tahoe area. combined with low humidity, it means any fire, as we have seen this happen, will rapidly grow in size and intensity. that is a big concern, especially if new fires break out. here it is a look at the air quality right now. you will notice it is moderate around the south lake tahoe area. on the other side, it is hotter -- it is hazardous. moderate air quality here. air quality advisory remains up for today. things are going to change as we look at the smoke forecast. this is encouraging. better air quality as the winds ramp up coming off the ocean
