men and women i have seen on the field here >> thank you for joining us. >> let's get right to it. >> we just had an update from calfire. firefighters have been throwing everything they have at the flames to protect the historic town of strawberry. it appears to have worked. calfire says as of tonight, no structures have been lost. the eastern edge of the fire is still raging. the fire has crossed highway 80 and is getting closer to kirkwood resort. calfire says the smoke is limiting their effort for fighting from the air. >> the group behind me is used to winning and i can tell you every single firefighter and law enforcement officer out on the line is doing absolutely everything they can to protect lives, property and the natural resources we all hold dear on all parts of this fire. >> the fire has reached the

tahoe basin in there is a red flag warning for the cr tonight meaning the conditions are ripe for the fire to explode. >> this map shows the current evacuations. red is an evacuation order. you can see it goes right up to the edge to lake tahoe. the yellow area is evacuation warnings. containment of the fire has dropped to 14%. the fire has scorched more than 177,000 acres and the flames advanced to the east. this video was taken at 3:00 p.m. today. it gives you a perspective of how massive the fire has begun. firefighters are getting support from the air. we sell the plane make a retardant drop. >> abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma is monitoring the air quality in the bay area. let's hear from stephanie sierra who is right in the thick of it tonight. >> the wind is really picking up

here. we confirmed a spot fire has jumped the ridge of echo summit moving down in our direction about a half mile in our direction. calfire tells us there are a lot of embers blowing and spreading the fire rapidly. all of this happening just about a half mile from where we are right now. the smoke is so dense you cannot make out echo summit or the outline of the trees. what is happening is exactly what fire crews were afraid of. conditions ahead the worst we have ever seen it. the caldor fire picking up speed, threatening tens of thousands of homes in south lake tahoe as families rushed to evacuate. >> hopefully there is going to be a home to come back to. >> evacuee jeff in denial. moving through the fire, -- living through the angora fire, he knows the feel of losing everything. >> sure enough, it is not good

right now. >> today, the flames even more ferocious. crawling fast up echo summit. do you expect tonight to be the worst? > i did mention today is going to be one of the hardest fights. the wind is going to increase. we will probably see more extreme growth. >> whipping winds continue moving the flames northeast weaving hand crews hard at work in myers where flames erupted alongside highway 50 overnight jarring miles of land along the famous tahoe ski resort. the iconic ski resort is still standing. the ski lifts are shrouded in smoke. crews watering down the charred grounds. only a maintenance building burned to the ground. the main ski strip still in tact but homes across the street not as lucky. only chimneys left behind. fo away, traffic at a standstill as 22,000 people try.

that is going to be a big focus for crews tonight. >> let's talk about evacuations. our most people out at this point? -- are most people out at this point? >> i lost reception for a moment. can you repeat that? >> evacuations, have most of the people gotten out? >> at this point, yes. in myers and south lake tahoe, deserted. there are some people who wanted to stay until the very last minute. they wanted to protect their homes. because it is a half an hour from where we are now, that is what we are seeing. a lot of the people have stayed, they're getting one last stop for gas and then they are getting out of town. the emotion of this has been heartbreaking to talk to these families who are packing up all their belongings. their life savings poured into their homes. some of these families just remodeled their house and it is a mile from the fire line.

these stories are heartbreaking. you have got to feel for these people who are living with all this uncertainty right now. >> i know the tension is just terrible in this stress. let's bring in meteorologist drew tuma. checking in on those conditions. >> firefighters have a day and a half of dangerous winds to contend with right now. we will take you to the northeastern flank of the fire. you can see phillips, myers. we are going to spin this around because calfire in their last update has said we have spot fires below echo summit and they are moving into christmas valley. it is not surprising because we could on the current winds right now and you can see the winds are going to push any fires to the east. that is a big concern as this fire moves into tahoe basin. another update we heard from calfire is the fire has jumped

highway 88 and is moving toward kirkwood. the wind direction is pushing the fire in that direction. red flag warning in effect for dangerous fire conditions through tomorrow night for much of the northern sierra. that wind is also creating better air quality shared by tomorrow, air quality between good and moderate for the bay area. >> smoke from the fires is creating different challenges for bay area residents especially students who play sports outside. ryan curry is live in livermore where students are playing football tonight after friday's game was canceled. >> that game happening just moments ago. kickoff a few moments ago. the principal at granada high school calling for a need to be flexible. he says he does not know if a regular football season can happen as it is supposed to. he says the smoke from the wildfires and the pandemic scheduling made it difficult. he had to cancel a lot of events due to public health.

it is something usually enjoyed at the end of each week. friday night football. in team takes the field and in mitts school pride. for granada high school, that school pride feeling is coming at the beginning of the week air quality forced the school to postpone the game until monday. >> we were hyped up for friday night but i think being hyped up as possible on a monday night as possible. >> when he looked at the sky friday, he knew it would not be safe to play football game. >> we did not have a great feeling. the air looked very dirty. >> the air quality was over one 50, putting livermore in the unhealthy range. what makes the postponement frustrating is how frequent it happens. when sybil hart says each year a sporting event is moved due to smoke and he does not see it changing anytime soon. >> it feels a little bit what california is like now. we have had these issues going back four years straight. air quality concerns that have

jeopardized the only athletics but we had a school dismissal day several days ago because the air quality was so poor. >> he says the school tries to schedule events hoping they will happen without issue but he called on students and staff to be open to the moves in case they keep happening. >> everybody here, teachers, students, administrators, i think we know that flexibility is kind of necessary right now. >> that threshold listed by the california interscholastic federation is at 150. if it is above that, they have to cancel the event. right now, it is right below 100 so this game does not look like it is going to face any issues when it comes to air quality. >> that is good to hear. obviously fire and a air quality here. to another part of the country and another disaster, you can see the enormity of the damage left behind by hurricane ida. the powerful hurricane was one

of the worst in louisiana history. half the state is without electricity. communities are underwater. elizabeth shall see is in new orleans. >> rescue efforts are underway in louisiana after hurricane ida left a trail of devastation. the coast guard surveying the damage as first responders struggled to reach some of the hardest hit areas. two we know there is standing water. we're hearing reports of people trapped in their addicts. >> at least one person has died. louisiana's governor warns the number will go up. >> we have thousands of people right now with high water vehicles and boats who are doing search-and-rescue. >> in louisiana and his sippy, more than a billion customers are without power. officials say it could be days or weeks before the lights come back on. >> these normally bustling streets of new orleans are eerily quiet.

america's longest war. the department of defense posted this image of the last soldier departing afghanistan. the departure effectively ends 20 years of war that left 2500 american troops dead. >> that includes 13 u.s. service members who were killed last week by an isis-k suicide bomber. we honor their sacrifice today as we remember their heroic accomplishments. no words from me could possibly capture the full measure and sacrifices and accomplishments of those who served nor the emotions they are feeling at this moment. >> gunfire from the taliban was heard in kabul after the last flight took off. more than 123,000 civilians were airlifted. officials say there are about 200 u.s. citizens still trying to leave. u.s. says it has an agreement with the taliban to allow for their safe passage out.

in fight for part of the northern sierra. that does include the calder fire and the dixie fire. we have the winds out of the southwest. they are gusting lola for 20 miles per hour. it's unfortunately, we are going to do this all again tomorrow afternoon. we are going to have stronger winds. that is why calfire is focused on this eastern flank. that is where we are likely going to see the most spread. the effect the winds are having for us, it is clearing out a lot of the smoke. it is much clearer today than it was this time yesterday. air quality continues to improve over the next 48 hours. by wednesday, we are going to get rid a lot of smoke. -- get rid of a lot of smoke. winds are pretty light in general. five to 15 miles per hour. continuing to bring us some cooler weather. cannot get rid of all the heat inland right now.

veterans during this difficult time. >> the man convicted of killing an iowa college student with bay area ties has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. he learned his fate today in an iowa courtroom. the 26-year-old was convicted of the kidnapping and murder of mollie tibbetts in may. she went out for a jog in 2018 when she was stabbed to death. he admitted to investigators he stalked her. the judge had this to say to him before handing down the sentence. >> you and you alone forever changed the lives of those who loved mollie tibbetts. >> she was born in san francisco and grew up in oakland before moving to iowa in 2009. > a container ship on sex -- on seven cisco bay was evacuated after a dozen crewmembers got sick. people are experie exp
