i will give you an update on the sierra because i know that is on sony people's minds and it is still out there, the red flag warning's until 11:00 tomorrow evening -- red flag warnings until 11:00 tomorrow evening. bad conditions for the firefighters and we are looking at fog and you can see it is hazy as we look. back here, our increase in air quality and our decrease in temperatures unfortunately is the same wind bringing the issues up into the sierra. while we are enjoying the reprieve, they're going to see even worse conditions. we will stay around the upper 50's low 60's at the coast. we have taken the 90's away for several days. i will show you the forecast coming up. reggie: the caldor fire is tearing through the basin. firefighters work through the

night trying to protect homes and tahoe paradise. this is one of many neighborhoods that has been evacuated. it will give you an idea of where these evacuation orders are. the area highlighted in red under a mandatory evacuation. as you can see, the entire city of south lake tahoe and areas along the west and south shores are part of the evacuation orders. critical point as it is burning down into christmas valley. you can see the flames down this ridge, they are within feet of this home right here and what is really scary is if you look up on that ridge, you can see flames there as well. that means this fire is approaching down the valley, closer to lake tahoe and many homes are threatened right now. overnight, the massive caldor fire forcing many californians to leave their home behind.

we are essentially surrounded by flames. they are burning at the top of this cliff and you can see the trees that are ignited over here, and the wind is sending embers down the mountain and it needn't -- and igniting new small fires. nearly 60 -- nearly six 2000 people facing evacuation orders as firefighters battle the flames. > mandatory evacuations. please pack up and leave now. reporter: the popular resort community of south lake tahoe evacuated, people stuck for hours on the highway trying to escape as flames ravage the forest around them. >> it is going really slow. reporter: the fire, now 15% contained, already burning more than 186,000 acres, destroying structures including 500 homes, damaging 39 others. this year, the ski resort at lake tahoe turning their

snowmachine into a makeshift water cannon to beat back the flames. fire damaged trees, very concerned. it is making it hard to fight these fires and in response these efforts, all national forests in the state of california will be closed starting today and officials expect to see some high wind in this area this morning and red flag warning's extended in many areas through wednesday -- red flag warnings extended in many areas through wednesday. jobina: this is caltrans camera video showing evacuees leaving south lake tahoe. thousands of residents left yesterday, creating huge traffic jams on all roads leading out. >> if it is burnt down, we don't have anywhere to go. jobina: most residents left as the evacuation order came down yesterday but long time tahoe resident kevin cooper says for

it is unclear how any people still need rescuing but thousands of national guard members have been called out to help. this morning, an urgent search and rescue mission underway along the louisiana gulf coast where hurricane ida obliterated entire communities. >> this is one of the worst natural disasters i've ever seen. tj: in one in one in one in one people have been rescued so far. >> i will continue to sleep here. my home is flooded and i lost my car. tj: this new video from above -- showing homes destroyed and buildings without roofs. rescuers are struggling to reach the barrier island where 40 people chose to ride out the storm. officials believe all of those people did survive.

new drone video over the town of laplace, showing neighborhoods surrounded by water. >> the rain just kept coming. it wouldn't stop. tj: more than 5000 members of the louisiana national guard are helping in the rescue efforts, using 95 high water vehicles, 79 boats and 34 helicopters. also helping in the mission, locals like vincent. he is responding to people on facebook who are asking for help, reaching them by boat after getting their address. ida was officially the second strongest hurricane that hit louisiana, with wind gusts up to 72 miles per hour -- up to 172 miles per hour. later today, the homeland security secretary will visit louisiana to survey the damage alongside the louisiana governor. back to you. reggie: there has been a

covid-19 outbreak on a container ship in san francisco bay. these efforts could fire department says at least six people on board tested positive. 19 of the 21 crewmembers were experiencing flulike symptoms. the department safely evacuated them off of the ship. they acted quickly since coronavirus and the flu have similar symptoms. all 19 are experiencing mild symptoms. the health department is going to examine the ship. jobina: today, governor newsom will be in alameda county to highlight the state's ongoing effort to encourage more californians to get vaccinated. 80% of all eligible californians have received a least one dose. you can watch that news conference this morning on our website, abc7news.com. california lawmakers will not consider statewide vaccine mandates this year, but the proposal could be on the table when they return in january. and ascend from oakland says she will not pursue the bill.

she now says she needs more time to craft the strongest bill possible. governor newsom could still impose a vaccine mandate on his own. several bay area cities have passed vaccine mandates. reggie: jerry selection gets underway in san jose today for the trial of theranos founder elizabeth holmes. she is facing multiple fraud and conspiracy charges alongside her former boyfriend and chief operating officer. any hollifield is live outside the courthouse with new information. amy: good morning. it may take longer than usual to find a jury for this case because it is so high-profile. they have already dismissed some potential jurors who filled out the questionnaire because they had heard details about the case through media coverage. elizabeth holmes faces six counts of fraud. she is accused of defrauding customers and investors who believed in her medical startup company, theranos. the premise was that her company's technology could perform a range of medical tests from a drop of blood.

the company at one point was valued at nearly $10 billion. it was later discovered that the technology did not work. the prosecution plans to provide witnesses who received also results from the tests. one showed a miscarriage while extreme sing a healthy princi. others received false hiv-positive -- that she was influenced by him, a claim that came as a surprise to many legal experts. >> this is a huge deal. it is an absolute bombshell. elizabeth holmes is a -- is essentially alleging a decade-long history of systematic abuse, in the form of he controlled every aspect of their relationship. amy: his lawyer because the claims outrageous and one former theranos employee told us he

finds the allegations hard to believe, saying he never saw abuse. about 200 potential jurors have filled out the questionnaire. once we get to trial, that is expected to last about four months and she could face the 20 years in prison. mike: taking a look at what is going on with ida and you can see the flood watches and warnings stretching all the way from the gulf up towards boston, so a tough go. it is down to 30 miles per hour as it sits and churns just to the southwest but you also notice where most of the rain is, well out to the east and to the north. the center isn't as important as where the rain bands are. let's bring it back home and take a look at what is going on in tahoe.

it is pretty moderate, hard to believe with all the fire and smoke. we are green and good in the yellow, moderate as we head throughout the next 36 to 48 hours. air in the central valley and up around tahoe, right over top of the fire and that will continue today. look at how we clean out thanks to the onshore breeze. some of the fire and smoke to the north is going to get into the marine layer so it is possible our air quality could go down from today. it is still supposed to remain below advisory levels. we have a refreshing breeze for exercise with clean air on that breeze and definitely not as hot as it has been. san francisco, looking at mid 50's. 50 at petaluma, leandro, walnut creek and fairfield.

70's for the rest of the bay and 80's inland. sue: good morning. pretty nice out there so far. the golden gate bridge is fog free with three lanes -- free lanes in both directions. we have a 40 minute drive up and over the altamont pass. an earlier big problem that is now pretty minor, we had a five car accident northbound on 680 in san jose. that has been pre-much cleared out and you can see traffic is moving at the limit now. jobina: if you haven't been back on bart since the pandemic, there is a new incentive. bart is offering to percent off of all clipper fares. the discount is taken when you tap your card at the fair gate. they have sent -- they have set a pandemic ridership record. still just 25% of what it was

reggie: the man convicted of killing an iowa college student has been sentenced to life without parole. he learned his fate in an iowa courtroom. the 26 euros was convicted for the kidnapping and murder of mollie tibbetts in may. she went out for a jog when she was stabbed to death. rivera admitted he stalked her. here is what the judge said

before handing out the sentence. >> you and you alone, forever change the lives of those who loved mollie tibbetts. reggie: she was born in san francisco and grew up in oakland for moving to iowa in 2009. jobina: today, the santa clara county board of supervisors will take up their no-confidence vote for sheriff laurie smith. two members say they no longer have confidence that smith is able to faithfully, effectively and ethically perform her job duties. the board has called for an independent investigation of jail operations. the san jose mayor has called for smith to resign or in number of reasons, including a corruption scandal involving two of smith's top staff members. smith says she has no plans to resign. reggie: caltrans is holding a hiring event today to keep california beautiful. the event runs at laney college in oakland. caltrans hopes to hire up to 220 people through the newly

established clean california program. you need to bring a copy of an application which you can find on the caltrans website, and any licenses or certifications. positions include highway and landscape maintenance and equip it operators. jobina: this is an interesting story. a lake county woman who grabbed a firehose to protect her neighborhood from a wildfire earlier this month is now facing charges. the fire to parma and is accusing her of stealing that firehose. rebecca morrissey is due in court today for her arraignment. abc 7 news spoke with her two weeks ago when she helped rescue goats from the cache fire. now she is in trouble after this photo surfaced. it shows her using a firehose to fight that same wildfire. police say she admitted to taking the hose during another fire in june. >> if you happened to pick it up and dropped it off at the fire station in good faith, i would buy you a soda or candy bar. if you stole it from my

district, i'm going to prosecute you. jobina: the fire district is missing between 500 and 1000 feet of firehose. firehose costs about $1000 per 300 feet. reggie: the caldor fire continues to burn. take a look at this video of a bear roaming around a very smoky neighborhood in south lake tahoe. do you see what just happened? the bear opened the garage door with its paw. it wandered on the street, undisturbed. i like this bear. i'm going to be thinking about it. i'm hoping for the best for it. jobina: definitely resourceful. mike: they are getting much better at opening things. we are not mad aboutre not mad a jobina: the air, mike. mike: it is pretty bad up there.

i was away but i was definitely monitoring what has been going on and it is just breaking my heart to see that our worst fears have been happening. the fact that what we are seeing right here is high-pressure to our south and low pressure to our north, it is going to be the responsible party for what happens in lake tahoe. we will get a little deeper into the forecast. what we are seeing is that nice onshore breeze that is going to bring us cleaner and cooler air, we will be well below average as we head through the middle parts of the week. it is not until high-pressure comes back that the unofficial end of summer will be our hottest days in the forecast but all that wind is fueling the eastward spread of the caldor fire. mid to upper 70's through most of the south bay. mid 80's in morgan hill. 71 in san mateo.

few days to fill up your gas tank. hurricane ida is impacting the price at the pump. the exact reason for the spike. reggie: the fate of theranos founder elizabeth holmes. we are live at the courthouse with why this could take longer than usual. good morning, it is tuesday, august 31. jobina: we are going to start with a quick check on our forecast, with meteorologist mike nicco. mike: good morning. we will start locally and then throughout the rest of the program, we will talk about what is going on with ida and also the caldor fire. we are looking at pretty clear conditions and other than a little bit of fog around santa rosa, it is not too bad. it is a little bit thicker and this will continue to move inland, just a little bit as that onshore breeze roles and -- rolls in.

most of us will be in the 50's. we have 61 in concorde. notice how much sunshine we're going to have. near 60 at the coast near noon. 60's around the bay at 4:00, 70's to barely some 80's inland and that is definitely going to be a little bit milder than yesterday. this continues, jobina. i will see you in a bit with the seven day forecast. jobina: breaking news out of lake tahoe, evacuation orders expanded overnight. people have been put on notice. this is new video of the wildfire burning in the tahoe basin and these are the latest numbers from calfire. the caldor fire has burned more than 291 square miles. that is larger than the city of chicago. it is just 15% contained. 6464 structures have been destroyed. firefighters and people have been hurt in the fire. reggie: the caldor fire has

reached christmas valley. tracy humphrey in sacramento joins us off of highway 89 with an update. good morning. tracy: good morning. we are off of highway 89, known as gunther past road -- this entire area is under an evacuation order for a good reason. this is a spot fire we have all the others of highway 89. what was once an unlikely scenario has turned into a reality. the caldor fire is in the tahoe basin. we have falling ash and throughout the day, it is going to be the opportunity for blowing embers as wind is expected to pick up. on the backside of this hill, we have tahoe paradise golf course and also a number of subdivisions as well as neighborhoods. the opportunity for high wind and the forecast ticking up this afternoon. we have a red flag warning in

effect, the wind gusting 25 to 30 miles per hour, especially in the higher elevations. some of the gusty is twinned -- gustiest wind. of course we are looking at extremely dry vegetation. the opportunity for critical fire weather is in the forecast. that is going to be something we are watching throughout the afternoon, well into the overnight and a course this red flag warning is in effect until wednesday night. we are here live on highway 89 just outside of luther past road. -- luther pass road. calfire has a lot of work ahead of them. i am tracy humphrey for abc 7 news. reggie: the caldor fire is showing some rare behavior. the fire with a research lab in san jose says the fire is unique because it is burning through the entire elevation of the sierra nevada, up and over and

into the tahoe basin. flames from the dixie fire are showing the same behavior. >> what is unique is the risk right now is from a fire that started so far on the others of the sierra nevada. >> we need to be really cognizant that there is fire activity happening in california that we have never seen before. reggie: he says his lab is updating the state twice a day with the fire forecast for the caldor and dixie fire's. that comes from their 48 hour computer simulations that are changing as the weather changes. jobina: the u.s. forest service will close all national forests in california tonight because of the raging wildfires in the state. these closures begin at midnight and last through at least september 17. the agency says the goal is to quote, better provide public and firefighter safety. people caught violating the closure and face a possible $5,000 fine.

overnight, we learned two people died in 10 people are hurt after a highway collapse in george county, mississippi. this is new video of crews fishing out cars. moderate damage reported along the french quarter. if you need to get gas, you might want to get it as soon as possible, because gas prices are likely to go up because of hurricane ida. it is all because of oil production in the gulf of mexico stopping during storms like these. officials at refineries and oil rigs are assessing the damage right now and experts think we could see a five cents to $.15 increase in gas prices of the next few days. as you know, we already have asked really high gas prices. the national averages about $3.16 for regular gas. in california, that is $4.40. in san francisco, it is even higher. jobina: after 20 years, it is over. president biden will address the nation following the end of america's war in afghanistan.

u.s. forces say all military members have it -- have been evacuated. the pentagon released this photo of the last soldier to board that final evacuation flight. over the course of this war, more than 2400 troops were killed in combat. that includes 13 servicemembers who died during a suicide bombing last week outside the kabul airport. the state department says up to 200 americans were not able to evacuate. they are people who wanted to leave could not get to the airport. >> there was a lot of heartbreak associated with this departure. we did not get everybody out that we wanted to get out. jobina: this is how the taliban marked the end of the u.s. occupation in afghanistan, by launching volleys of syllabus were gunfire into the air. the ambassador to afghanistan will leave -- lead the ongoing effort to continue to get americans and afghans out of the country but officials warn it will not be easy. reggie: now turn exclusive report. we're going to be talking with

try to poke holes in this defense. they are allowed to have their expert interview elizabeth holmes and likely that expert is going to say that she did not suffer from this type of abuse or this syndrome. maybe some of these allegations are true but it actually did not affect her mental state. amy: one former theranos employee told us he finds the allegations against balwani hard to believe, saying he never saw abuse happening at the company. about 200 potential jurors have filled out the questionnaire. some have already been dismissed because they do details about the case from all the media coverage. jury selection is a spec for to take more than usual -- is expected to take longer than usual. if convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison. jobina: a plea from a san francisco mother. she is sharing her tremendous loss that she blames on

covid-19. what she wants other families to know. reggie: also, the countdown to the recall election. the new ad you will see on tv. first, a check on the weather with meteorologist mike nicco. mike: here is a look at the red flag warning. nothing has changed. 40 mile-per-hour winds or faster at the higher elevations. this goes through 11:00 tomorrow evening. we have two more days of prickle fire conditions. the wind is coming out of the south at about nine miles per hour. look what happens around 4:00. they pushed right into the basin. spot fires, probably going to be an issue like it was yesterday when they were up to a half mile ahead of the initial fire. the windfalls down but still around 50 miles per hour and then it ramps up to about 27 miles per hour as we head into 4:00 tomorrow afternoon and then start to taper. by thursday, we will wake up with calm conditions.

in san francisco was eight months pregnant when she says she got covid-19 and lost her unborn baby. kate larsen spoke to the family about their regrets. reporter: nancy should be soothing her newborn's cries but instead she is wiping her own tears and planning a funeral. >> to leave your baby at the hospital, it is very sad. reporter: last week, nancy found out her baby girl was gone. two days later at eight months pregnant, she gave birth to her stillborn daughter. >> the truth is, i feel guilty about what happened. reporter: nancy's husband got sick with covid at the beginning of august. he ended up in the hospital but not -- but thought his initial symptoms were side effects from his first dose of the covid-19 vaccine. he went home to his wife and son

who both got very sick. >> if i could go back in time, i would have gotten vaccine did sooner. reporter: like 75% of pregnant women in the u.s., nancy was unvaccinated. after she lost the baby, she got her first shot. was the baby healthy before you got covid? >> yes, my baby was extremely healthy. reporter: in order to determine the cause of death, doctors told her an autopsy would be needed but nancy feels like it was her covid infection. >> everything was fine until i got a fever, cough and chills. to the mothers who are not vaccinated, get the vaccine. reporter: mario still has some covid symptoms and has been unable to work at his restaurant job all month. they have organized a gofundme to pay for their daughter's burial. jobina: we are thinking of them. we have a whole vaccine team dedicated to getting you the latest information.

progressive part of the democrat party and also young latino voters, who many believe could help determine the election outcome. >> if i saw an ad or if anybody saw an ad featuring bernie sanders telling our community to vote no on the recall, more likely than not, our community will pay attention, only because senator sanders built that relationship with the latino community in california. jobina: we've also learned the los angeles police department will not further investigate or press charges against republik and candidate larry elder over to mystic allegations made by his ex fiance. the incident happened in 2015 and is past the statute of limitations. reggie: a cougar found living in new york city is now heading to an annual -- heading to an animal's actuary in arkansas. the owner who had the cougar in the house surrendered the 11 month old cat after it showed signs of aggression. he purchased the cougar out of state when it was a cub.
