unfolding for south lake tahoe as fast-moving flames forced thousands to leave their homes behind. >> this is an evacuation. reggie: law enforcement going door-to-door. we hear from one man disobeying the order to leave. he gives us his reasons for staying for now. jobina: spotted wandering a smoky south lake neighborhood, there is an unusual thing. reggie: good morning, welcome to tuesday, august 31. we are going to start with a forecast. how does it look? mike: we start with our forecast. when we come back in about eight minutes, we will dive into the fire. we've got some fog developing around the american canyon in around santa rosa. the fog around santa rosa will stay there. you can see the winds blowing up

to the napa valley, it is a possibility some of the fall spread northward. otherwise, looking clear. upper 40's to low 50's in the north at 7:00, the rest of us may be to upper 50's. as we head into the lunch hour, looking at 60's and 70's from the coast. if you 80's inland. that is the big difference from yesterday to today. no more 90's. it will get cooler before summer heat returns this weekend. reggie: we are following breaking news as the caldor fire tears through the tahoe basin. jobina: firefighters worked to the night trying to protect homes. this is one of many neighborhoods that have been evacuated. now we are pulling up the mac -- map seeking get a view of how widespread evacuation orders are. the red area indicates evacuation. along the west and south shores are part of the evacuation

orders. where the flames are headed. >> good morning. we are reaching a critical point in the caldor fire as it burns down this ridge into christmas valley. what i want to show you -- easy the flames down this ridge. they are within feet of this home right here. what is really scary, if you look up on the ridge, you can see flames. that means this fire is encroaching down the valley closer to lake tahoe. many homes are threatened right now. overnight, the massive caldor fire forced thousands more californians to leave their homes behind. this fire is roaring right now. we are surrounded by flames. they are burning at the top of this cliff here. you can see the trees that are ignited over here. the wind is sending embers down the mountain, igniting new spot fires. nearly 60,000 people are now under evacuation orders as firefighters wage an all-out

battle against the flames. >> mandatory evacuations. please pack up and leave now. >> south lake tahoe evacuated. people stuck for hours on the highway trying to escape as flames ravaged the forest around them. the fire now 15% contained, already burning more than 186,000 acres. this drink 652 structures including nearly 500 homes. -- destroying and damaging 39 others. a big concern for these firefighters are these fire damage trees. they are very concerned because fall over. it is a safe space right now, but it makes it hard for them to fight the fires. in response to efforts, all national force in a state of california will be closed starting today. officials expect to see some high winds in this area this morning and red flag warning's extended in many areas through

wednesday. jobina: evacuees leaving south lake tahoe on highway 50. thousands of residents left yesterday, crating huge traffic jams on all roads leading out. >> this is our hometown. taurus come to see it. if it's burnt down, we don't have anywhere to go. jobina: most residents left is the evacuation order came down. but a longtime resident says for now, he is not going anywhere. he lives below echo summit and says flames get close, he will be ready to leave. >> this is a big fire for the lake tahoe base in -- basin it a scary situation. we going to wait and see. jobina: officers went door-to-door to tell neighbors to leave their homes as fires moved closer. reggie: what is happening is a good reminder to be prepared to evacuated, even if you are on vacation.

oakland assembly member says she will not pursue the bill, which we told you about last week. she says she needs more time to craft the strongest bill possible. governor newsom could impose a vaccine minute on his own. several bay area cities have passed vaccine mandates. reggie: there is a trial today for elizabeth holmes, who is facing multiple fraud and conspiracy charges alongside her former boyfriend in chief operating officer. we have a reporter live outside the courthouse with information. >> legal documents documents dos over the weekend shocked many who have been watching this case. the documents indicate that homes wednesday claim she is the victim, that she was influenced by her abuser. elizabeth holmes faces six counts of fraud. she is accused of defrauding customers and investors who believed in her medical company

startup company. mipa' teno could for o e mpany, at one point nearly $1. it was later discovered the technology did not work. the prosecution plans to provide witnesses who received false results from those medical tests , including some who received false hiv-positive positive tests. then the defense will claim her copresident had control over her and that she was influenced by him. a claim that came as a surprise to many legal experts. >> this is a huge deal. it is an absolute bombshell. elizabeth holmes essentially alleging a decade-long history of systematic abuse in the form of he controlled every aspect of their relationship. >> his lawyer calls the claims

necessarily in tahoe. some smoke trying to get into the marine layer. look what happens is we head to the afternoon and evening. we start to see more haze. right now, looks like it will not be a spare the air day. as far as any activity outside e a refreshing breeze with cleaner air into cooler conditions. temperatures from the 60's to the 80's. it is going to get quite hot this weekend. i have the forecast coming up here soon. >> it is tuesday, your traffic is flowing as you might expect. putting nicely along the east freeway headed into the macarthur maze. bumper-to-bumper here, but it is moving. no stalls or accidents. we do have lights turn on at 542, about half an hour ago. traffic stacking up to the first over crossings for about an eight minute delay wednesday approach the plaza. once you're on the span, it is sluggish coming into san francisco. the drive from the top of the

reggie: the man convicted of killing an iowa college did with bay area ties has been sent to life and prison without parole. he learned his fate in iowa courtroom. the 20 six rd was convicted of the kidnapping and murder of best 26 year old was convicted of the kidnapping and murder. he admitted he stopped her. here is what the judge said before -- stopped her. here is what the judge said. >> you and you alone forever change the lives of those who loved mollie tibbetts. reggie: she was born in san francisco group in oakland before moving to iowa in 2009.

jobina: the board of supervisors will take up the no-confidence vote for sheriff laurie smith. they say they no longer have confidence smith is able to effectively perform her job duties. the board has called for independent investigations of jail operations. san jose mayor has called for smith to resign for a number of reasons. including a corruption scandal involving two of smith's top stuffers. smith says she has no plans to resign. a lake county woman who grabbed a firehose to protect her neighborhood from a wildfire earlier this month is now facing charges. i find the story interesting. the friday permit is accusing her of stealing the firehose. she is due in court today for her arraignment. abc7 news spoke with her two weeks ago. she helped rescue goats from the cache fire. now she is in trouble after this photo surfaced. it shows her using a firehose to fight the same wildfire. police say she admitted to taking the hose during another

fire in june. >> if you happen to pick it up and dropped off to the station in good faith, i will give you a candy bar. if you still something from a fire district, i'm going to prosecute you. jobina: l.a. county fire protection district is still missing between 500 to 1000 feet of firehose. a firehose cost about $300 per 100 feet. reggie: i feel bad for this bear you are about to see. this is near the caldor fire, which continues to burn. the bear is wandering these neighborhoods that are full of smoke. look. it was able to pull up the garage door with seemingly no problem. i hope this bear is alright. i hope he makes it through. jobina: me too. that bear looks like he is done it before. reggie: it probably got into some cars. it could probably log onto a computer at this point. i would like to see that. [laughter] jobina: i hope the bear is ok.

mike: it should know needs to evacuate if it logs onto the computer. i wish it could. we talk about later on, but that is being affected just like the rest of us are that are up there and trying to get away from the fires. the wildlife. they are and just as much peril as we are. let's talk about what is going on back here at home. you can see from sfo, the lack of fog this morning. temperatures tumbled below average through at least friday. but we've got to pay for that. it is going to be quite hot. especially in the end, through the holiday weekend. we are supposed to say goodbye to summer. it is going to be a reintroduction after a pretty comfortable seven days before hand. let's go to the south bay, pretty clear. some fog trying to move up from the south. temperatures running around 53 to 58 degrees. am 60's around alameda,

lafayette and danville. we have 48 in nevada, 51 in san francisco. it is this low that is bringing us the refreshing breeze. that is also what is creating the fire danger in the sierra. what we are improving, they are deteriorating. which is unfortunate. 75 in sunnyvale. the peninsula, 70 in san bruno. mostly sunny along the coast, not only in pacifica but daly city. 66 downtown san francisco. sausalito, mid 70's. 74 to 84 to the northbay valleys. 67 in richmond, 76 in fremont. pittsburgh, 86. livermore 85. we are looking at temperatures that are going to be warm along with the high fire danger in the sierra. back at home, upper 40's to 50's.

is going on. more spot fires developed in the basin during the overnight. that is going to be the case as this continues to march into the basin. the fire is due to increasing winds this afternoon and again tomorrow afternoon. that will come out of the southwest and push northeast. 40 miles per hour or faster at our peaks up there. we are still in the thick of the worst potential whether we can get. back at home, little fog and humidity returning all across the northbay valleys. that is where is going to stay. some of it will try to be off to the east. you see the increasing onshore wind with temperatures -- 47 in santa rosa, 49 at 7:00 while the rest of us are in the mid 50's to low 60's. you can see 60's and 70's at noon with sunshine. a few low clouds making on. mostly sunny afternoon at the coast and sunny for the rest of us. the 90's are gone. the 80's may be gone a couple days before it gets really hot

this weekend. jobina: breaking news at lake tahoe. evacuation warnings expended overnight. people living across the state line in nevada have been put on notice. this is new video of the wild fire burning near meyer in the tahoe basin. the caldor fire has burned more than 291 square miles. that is larger than the city of chicago. it is just 15% contained. 664 structures have been destroyed. 39 more are damaged. three firefighters into other people have been hurt in the fire. reggie: the caldor fire has reached myers into christmas valley. the meteorologist with her sacrament affiliate is joining us. -- our sacramento affiliate is joining us. >> it has been a busy morning. yesterday, the fire roaring through christmas valley and what was back behind it just in front of it was where we are right now.

highway 89, and behind us is myers. what was once something without was a longshot has become a reality. this fire is indeed in the tahoe basin. no fire has ever crossed the sierra until this year. the dixie fire and now the caldor fire. take a look behind me. plenty of hotspots that are going to be in play. this is one of the other side of highway 89. hotspots again, a lot of times coming into being generated by embers. we have the parent fire that is roaring near highway 50. but once the winds kicked up, it kicks the embers up to a mile and sometimes even farther. you've got firefighters dealing with the fire into now, all of a sudden, they are dealing with spot fires well ahead of it. that has been the concern with this red flag warning. that is in effect until wednesday at 11:00 at night because of high winds. but during that timeframe, you do get a section of time where winds are very gusty.

today for this area, it kicks in around 11:00 in the morning and is going to be in the forecast until around 6:00 this evening. with those wins, the spot fires are looking at now are going to take off. winds are going to be pushing it out of the southwest, headed toward the northeast. it is headed toward myers and unfortunately south lake tahoe. the opportunity for high fire danger is why we did have the evacuation orders in place. yesterday, people relieving tahoe boulevard was a parking lot. we sat in traffic for more than one hour. people did on of the evacuation warning, which is wonderful. it gives cal fire the opportunity to get resources in and fight this fire. but the terrain and topography has been an ongoing problem because you can't to get in the resources you need to get in because sometimes the elevations are too high. sometimes, that has been the problem with this fire that continues to grow. as the caldor fire continues to bear down on south lake tahoe, these wins are going to be gusty

today. they are going to be gusty overnight tonight and also during the day tomorrow. let's not forget, labor day weekend is coming up. that is normally when south lake tahoe -- everyone is here and having a good time. this year's labor day, it is going to be one we will all soon forget. that is a look at what is happening here. reggie: we really appreciate the look you have been giving us this morning, thank you so much and please continue to stay safe. the caldor fire isn't showing some rare behavior. someone at the fire weather research lab it the fire is unique because it is burning through the entire elevation of the sierra nevada. last week, some the experts were saying there is no way is going to get to the tahoe basin. yet here it is. the dixie fire is doing the same thing. >> what is unique is the risk right now is from a fire that started so far on the others the sierra nevada. >> we need to be cognizant that

there is fire activity happening in california that we have never seen before. reggie: they are updating us twice today with the fire forecast for the caldor and dixie fire's. that comes from the 48 hour computer simulations that are changing as the weather changes. jobina: the u.s. forest service will close all national forests in california tonight because of the raging wildfires in the state. these closures begin at midnight and last the released september 17. the agency says the goal is to better provide public and firefighter safety. people can't filing the closure can phase a possible $5,000 fine. -- caught violating the closure can face a possible $5,000 fine. reggie: he is playing his violin while evacuating south lake tahoe. after waiting in his car come he decided to get out his fiddle and start entertaining fellow evacuees. >> i'm working on my bowing

prosecutors say she defrauded customers and investors with her company. it claimed to run a range of medical tests with one drop of blood. it turned out the technology did not work, but the company was at one point valued at $10 billion. holmes was charged more than three years ago. she has made the abuse claims and legal documents that just came out over the weekend, saying her copresident had a psychological and emotional control over her. his lawyer calls the claims of and inflammatory. >> the prosecution is going to try to poke holes in this defense. they are allowed to have their expert interview elizabeth holmes and lightly that expert is going to say that she did not suffer from this type of abuse or this syndrome. maybe some of these allegations are true, what happened to her, but it did not actually affect her mental state. >> one former employeeloyeeloyeo

to join gma this morning. sue: we headed to san where the fog is starting to settle in. the roads look clear, this is southbound 101 as you are passing the northgate mall and headed toward essential san rafael. we pop over to the east bay we can see 880. we have a new accident on the shoulder near wynton. this is headed up toward the macarthur maze and the approach the bay bridge where the lights are on and it is backed into the maze if you are approaching the bay bridge this morning. you can see fog starting to descend on the north bay. it is not really hampering visibility too much as we saw in san rafael, but it is out there moving around. slide of the central valley and over the past for about a 45 minute drive and also very slow heading into concord on 242. we had an earlier accident just now cleared out of two lanes, but traffic is now backed up to

highway four as you had southbound of 242 and highway four westbound is also very slow as he approached the 6080 junction. mike: let's head on up to the sierra. giving you an update on what is going on right now. winds of the south at about 12 miles per hour. notice they crank up right across the flyer -- fire, blowing southeast at 30 miles an hour. it could be faster, up to 45 and the higher elevations. tonight, they come down a little bit, coming out of the south at about 14. tomorrow afternoon, about 26 to 27 miles per hour. those spot fires that continue to jump about a half mile will continue during these time frames. that will put us squarely into south lake tahoe. today, possibly tomorrow. that is sad. let's take a look at near surface smoke for this area. it is going to remain very acrid as we continue to go from red to purple, which is the two highest

jobina: today, president biden will address the nation following the end of america's war in afghanistan. u.s. forces say all military members have now been evacuated. the pentagon released to this photo of the last soldier to board the final evacuation flight. over the course of this war, more than 2400 troops were killed in combat. that includes 13 servicemembers who died during a suicide bombing last week outside the kabul airport. the state department says up to 200 americans were not able to evacuate. there are people who wanted to leave, but could not get to the airport. >> there is a lot of heartbreak associated with his departure. we did not get everybody out that we wanted to get out. jobina: this is how the taliban
