six miles from lake tahoe, the battle to hold back the caldor fire consisted of skirmishes. crews getting up close and more than impertinence with a tenacious enemy. our associate, lake valley fire district number seven. this is your district? >> yes. >> so it is personal? >> yes, an important area for us. >> a few miles up highway 50, grim reminders of what is at stake when the wind blows. >> we are putting emphasis on not losing homes. we cannot guarantee anything. >> that is the ideal as fire moved out canyon walls above highway 50 and ended the same on the opposite side, all toward a community in the middle. >> that area is christmas valley. >> a name they hope will not make headlines. spot fires have been appearing all day, embers carried by wind, sometimes as much as three quarters of a mile. this threatening to cross highway 89. >> a spod re

reporter: how many have you fought? 'ably on the lower end. reporter: by the time they arrived, it expanded a couple hundred yards thanks to more flying embers. that is only their first issue. >> we have about a quarter left. about one or two left. >> meaning 200 gallons for all of this, plus leaving more for just in case. >> we have to keep enough in our tank to protect our tank in case something goes bad. >> fortunately, it went well. just another clash between men and a stubborn blaze and i gave up in this spot and reignited a few hundred yards farther down the road. in short, this fire eight hour a day job. when we left christmas valley a short time ago, so far so good. no homes burned.

about half an hour ago, a spokesperson came up to me, knocked on our door, said worry about the wind. they are worried about the wind. this paper blowing. it blew out of my hand. there were winds of 40 miles per hour this afternoon. it can spell trouble. wayne freedman, abc 7. >> the winds will persist. looking behind you, it looks very smoky. maybe that is mixed in with the fog. what is the area like? reporter: i will tell you what the air is like. i have had this on most of the day. as soon as we go off the air, i will have it on again. it is horrible. it is worse air quality than what we saw in san francisco that day the sky turned black. particulate and matter everywhere. it gets in your eyes, your nose, it is in my throat. i'm getting a raspy sound already. we have several days to go. that answers your question. kristen: thanks.

dan: terrible. firefighters are working around the clock to keep the fire from destroying more homes. you can see crews from the madison fire department setting backfires and dousing trees with water to slow the advancing flames. our battalion chief public information officer at the caldor fire. thank you for taking a few minutes. i appreciate it. what is the situation right now? >> the fire is currently thousand acres. 60% contained. in the high priority continues to be the northeastern end of the fire. it is burning in the echo summit, myers, christmas valley area. about four miles south of the southern end of south lake tahoe. it is quite challenging. we are under a red flag warning. it is set to expire tomorrow night. winds are very strong. that means the

flown up to a mile ahead of the fund. it is very dry because of the drought. the vegetation easily catching on fire. spot fires ahead of the main fire. it will eventually connect with the fire front and increase the size of the fire. within the last day, the fire grew by about 13,000 acres. dan: henry herrera, the battalion chief on the fire lines. that is terrifying. thank you for the explanation. it explains why this spreads so rapidly. if embers from the fire are blown into the air and mile ahead of the flames and start new fires, and the fire catches up with it, it grows that much more rapidly. it puts it into perspective. given that, the wind, the rough terrain, what are the firefighters focusing on right now? how do they prioritize what they need to do? >> the number one priority is life. to protect residents, citizens,

folks in and around the community close to the fire. that is why we issued an evacuation order. an imminent threat to life, to folks around myers and the city of south lake tahoe. once folks are evacuated, we can focus on protecting their homes, structures, the infrastructure, the community they live in. that is the number two priority. we are receiving more resources, we currently have 3900 firefighters. more are arriving every day. those resources will be in place primarily in the northeast end. we are strategically determining where we can construct containment lines with bulldozers and hand crews with chainsaws to remove the vegetation, material that can be consumed in order to help reduce or spread the rate of the wildfire. dan: how close is the wildfire to south lake tahoe? >> the most northeastern end end

the fire is approximately three miles south of the southern border of the city of south lake tahoe. dan: i know that is a grave concern for people in the bay area who enjoy and treasure lake tahoe. very unusual cross from one side of the sierra to the other, which is very unusual. what does it mean for fighting the fire and the future? seems like an awfully bad sign. >> absolutely. we are in the middle of a drought. very little rain, very little snow. the snow we receive is melting earlier in the year. that means the vegetation goes without water for much of the year, causing it to be very dry. we have very steep top harbor feet. fire burns much faster uphill with mountainous conditions. with the hot, dry, windy weather, it makes this fire burn

very hot, very intense, and at a fast rate of spread. the conditions on the ground are very challenging and dangerous. dan: a perfect storm in so many respects. we wish you and everyone working hard all the best and be safe. battalion chief henry herrera. thank you for coming on. >> absolutely, i appreciate it. kristen: let's take a look at the time lapse video of the caldor fire from 22,000 miles up. it was put together from images captured by the go west weather satellite. you can see the smoke spreading across the sierra and into nevada. let's head right to jury to meant for a look at how the caldor is spreading and the role of the winds. drew: let's take you through the northeastern part. officials are most can turned with this area. there is myers. this fire over the last 24 hours did jump over highway 89.

now in the eastern part of 89. current winds, no reason to believe the fire is not going to push to the east. winds coming out of the southwest, gusting as high as 35 miles per hour. to the south, south lake tahoe. tahoe airport, christmas valley. we are watching this fire in the bridge tops above myers right now. firefighters are working this area aggressively, along pioneer trail. they are trying to make a barrier using bulldozers to keep the fire in the ridge tops, away from the basin floor, where there are a lot of structures that can catch fire. we are also watching the kirkwood area. it is inching ever so closely to kirkwood, because coming from the southwest, pushing the fire closer to kirkwood. here is the red flag warning. it has been extended until tomorrow night. the fire danger will last another 30 hours. dan: a shame to hear.

a shame to hear. berkeley's beloved echo lake camp is mostly intact after a fire fight last night. a few cabins burned as firefighters tried to keep the flames away. most are standing. a team of firefighters spent the day protecting the cabins. it appears to have worked for now. governor newsom will tour the caldor fire area tomorrow. it is getting the resources california can muster, along with federal help. >> it is our number one priority, we are putting everything we've got. national guardsmen, comes -- conservation crew, cdc r has folks, putting everything we can. >> the governor declared a state of emergency for four counties in the sierra because of the caldor fire. kristen: the dixie fire is still the largest wildfire in california. it has burned 807,000 acres across 4 counties. it is 48% contained, but remains

yesterday. more people are getting vaccinated. a data analysis shows a 17% increase in americans getting their first shot every day. an fda advisory committee says it is not ready to approve a covid booster shot yet. some studies have found vaccine effectiveness wanes over time, by the committee says there is not enough evidence to justify their recommendation. more people may be getting vaccinated, but it is still not enough. governor newsom was in the east bay with another push. laura anthony was there. >> we still need to reach out to those that are on the fence. reporter: governor newsom says california may be among the leaders in the nation in vaccination rates, but there is work to be done. especially in communities like oakland fruitvale district. >> i want to encourage everyone who has not been vaccinated to unveil themselves to these life-saving vaccines that are not only effective, but are truly the answer to how we get

this pandemic once and for all behind us. reporter: overall, at least 80% of the eligible population in california has received at least one dose. it is these community efforts that has led oakland to achieve 86% of our eligible population having received their first vaccination. as much progress as they have made in fruitvale, this community lags well behind the rest of it comes to vaccination rates. at least 10% lower. >> early on, at the beginning of the pandemic, fruitvale was hit so hard. our positivity rate was reaching 32%, which is extremely high. we are down to 13%, and it is still too high. reporter: she told us she was hesitant to get the vaccine until recently, but is now relieved she has received the second dose. she will tell others. >> [speaking spanish]

dropout who became a silicon valley billionaire only to lose everything would not answer anything as reporter surrounded her arriving to the federal courthouse. elizabeth holmes is going on trial in charged of wire fraud connecting with theranos. it promised a giant diagnostic breakthrough but failed to deliver. jury selection is underway for a panel of 12 people out of more than 100. but theranos could make the process a challenge. the judge directed questions to the prospective jurors about what news or documentaries they had seen about the case, and whether it might influence their ability to be fair. several indicated media coverage left them with negative impressions. the judge also zeroed in on domestic violence, asking if any had been a victim of abuse. in a court filing, attorneys indicated they may allege she had been a victim of abuse. prosecutors and attorneys will be able to recheck potential jurors who filled out a lengthy questionnaire in advance to learn of potential conflict of interest.

they were also given a long list of essential witnesses who include former defense secretary james mattis, former secretary of state henry kissinger, and media mobile rupert murdoch. safety is a concern in the large but packed courtroom. 10 prospective jurors were excused when they said they were unvaccinated or you do all other potential jurors declare they are vaccinated, along with all members of the court staff. the jury selection process is expected to resume tomorrow. the trial could run for 13 weeks or longer. in san jose, david louis. dan: embattled santa clara county sheriff laurie smith was hit with a no-confidence vote cast by the entire county board of supervisors. the board voiced their displeasure with the scandals that have rocked the sheriff's office under smith's tenure. the resolution is symbolic, since the sheriff is elected, so the board cannot do anything about that. smith said she will not step down. kristen: turnout is expected to be light in today's special election to fill the assembly seat.

he remains committed to getting the 100-200 americans out of the country if they want to live. >> the number of americans remaining behind afghanistan is estimated to be fewer than 200. one of those is a young boy born near sacramento. our reporter explains what lies ahead for this child and his family. it is a story you will see only on 7. warren: this three-year-old boy was born near sacramento, his passport shows he is a u.s. citizen going through a harrowing ordeal right now, unable to escape afghanistan. we are hiding his identity and that of his father, and other family members who were all u.s. permanent residence, for fear of them being captured by the taliban. reporter: we received a call sunday morning from a friend of mine who is an active duty marine corps officer stationed overseas. he felt like his hands were tied and he needed to send help to get this family out. reporter: james brown has been working since sunday morning to

get family safe passage through the airport to the states. >> they have made omar's phone calls to the white house, to the secretary of defense -- numerous phone calls, escalating the family case o to the top for us. reporter: he wrote a letter saying these individuals be allowed to pass through the gates. armed with that letter, the boy, his father, and several other family members approached the airport, but the taliban attacked. >> they received physical beatings at the gates. they were pushed back and had to flee and return to his -- flee and return to a safe house. reporter: the secretary of state and i'm u.s. embassy in kabul will remain closed and the diplomats will be moved to doha, qatar. >> we will continue the relentless efforts to help americans, foreign nationals,

and afghans leave afghanistan if they choose. >> movement on this and many fronts. i will keep you up-to-date on the latest information. >> late tonight, i can report the boy and family are on the move, after linking with other americans who are desperate to flee afghanistan. without the normal channels of the u.s. government. and the chaos we left behind. >> the bay area organizations are stepping up to help refugees from afghanistan get settled when they arrive. we spoke with two organizations about what goes into that process. >> they've got a lot of challenges. reporter: this congressman met with volunteers and community members at this cultural center, preparing to eight around 60 refugees, relocated to the bay area. members of the center say once they learned about the evacuations, they started getting many resources together. >> they left the country with

nothing but what they were wearing. we plan to provide everything for them. reporter: that means they needed volunteers. she saysshe saysshe sayssh other refugees was very important. >> i feel as though i know what the refugees coming here are going through. i know it was hard for my mom to come to a new country not knowing the language. i have empathy with them. reporter: she helps organize essentials. she wants to help the families fear as comfortable as hers was decades ago. >> we don't know what to do, but we are trying to do anything we can to help them and make them feel comfortable coming here. they need to know they are not alone. reporter: it's not just the islamic community helping those coming from afghanistan. help has come from many organizations, trying their best to make sure they feel welcome when they come to the bay area. >> we've been working with the afghan community for many years.
