issued flash flooding emergencies for all five boroughs in new york. more than six inches of rain had fallen. rain falling at a rain of three to five inches per hour. this is the 28th street substation or water cascaded onto the stairs and the platform. it was limited or suspended altogether. at the u.s. open tennis tournament, play was called off after heavy rain at louis armstrong stadium. even after the retractable roof was shut. umbrellas virtually useless as tennis fans made a mad dash for cover. in queens, the rain swollen roadway filled with cars going nowhere. newark airport, the baggage claim airport flooded with geysers coming up from the ground. >> over 3.5 inches of rain fell in one hour in central park. more than half of the rains san francisco has seen since the

like in stateline nevada. a smoky and quiet night with the caldor fire continuing to burn. >> you see the smoke or heavy haze in the air. not as much ash right now. fire is not far from us. roughly about five miles. >> fire marshal of the douglas fire department spoke with us wednesday night. portions of the fire burned into a number of remote areas during the day. nighttime temperatures dropped. he's have died down. they are now using a helicopter with her night vision to make water drops. something rare in a firefight. >> i really don't think the fire is going to climb over the ridge tonight. things would have to change drastically. we would have to get more heavy winds to push it. reporter: more than 4000 firefighters are here who received word a team of 16 firefighters was sidelined with covid-19.

winds gusting out of the south-southwest to 12 miles per hour. winds have been easing compared to yesterday at this time. tomorrow, a west wind. a 17 miles per hour. a shift in the wind. that is onshore wind. expecting winds to ease up into friday. the smoke over the lake tahoe area will get worse over the next few days. especially tomorrow, purple is thicker smoke late thursday and friday. i will be back with the local forecast, coming up. >> firefighters are battling all kinds of smoke and flames as they raced to save homes in resorts in the caldor fire's path. wayne freedman is on the front lines. >> at the caldor fire, the sun went down, as it always does. but the flames continued to burn. they moving toward the kirkwood resort. this is the only sound echoing

through a empty kirkwood ski resort. it came from snow machines left on in the hope to prevent fire from the orange glow on the horizon. at that moment, it appeared to finally be moving in another direction. as the cal fire chief told us, none of his crews will be sleeping tonight. >> an all-nighter would be 36 hours before you go back to bed. >> it comes at the end of a very strange day. spot fires can be like lazarus, rising from the dead. hands this cal fire crew training and pounding ground they already won in upper myers to make sure they don't have to return. >> as firefighters tell it, this is work that has to be done. every single hotspot. there are thousands of them. reporter: in the christmas valley, one small spot fire matured and became a monster, turning trees into torches, launching embers into the sky. the embers threatened

keeping a close watch on a fire that got very close to homes today. uncomfortably close. kate larsen was there and found out what is likely to blame for the fire. > week flames dangerously close to homes, to helicopters, air taker and attack planes, and 130 firefighters descended on lucas valley and marine would. maggie mckim called her brother to tell her he left her home because of the caldor fire. he also evacuated from his house in south lake tahoe. >> hopefully we get through this. >> i hike on the hill every day. >> wind gusts burn up 44 acres before officials say it was likely some kind of machinery that sparked the flames, which narrowly missed a row of backyards. stuart was working from home. >> i heard fire sirens coming up the street, and looked out the backyard and saw flames all along. i grabbed my cats.
