video, this is the one to watch. unbelievable. a flash flood emergency in the northeast, parts of new york and new jersey getting a foot of rain as the remnants of ida move in. new video of the historic soaking and current conditions this morning. >> containment bumping up in the fight against the caldor fire burning south lake tahoe. the crews working tonight trying to gain more ground. >> expect more smoke to move into the bay area. mike is tracking our air quality. >> and a labor day travel warning is covid hospitalizations across the country hit a seven month high. >> good morning, you are watching abc 7's live on hulu live and wherever you stream. >> we want to start with mike. >> good morning. it is nice to see you. kumasi: thank you. >> hi, everybody. let's take a look at what we are seeing, an onshore breeze and marine layer around 3000 feet.

everybody is covered by clouds this morning. 87 in san jose. you can see the cloud down there. we are looking at 50's this morning, pretty uniform. it meant upper 50's and cloud cover will be slower today. mainly 60's today, 70 by noon. into the afternoon hours, 60's to near 70 around the bay, 70's to possibly 80's an our e spend neighborhoods. grab the jacket out this evening, falling to the 60's after the 7:00 hour. you have seen some video, it is amazing. thankfully the storm is pulling away from most of new england. the aftermath and cleanup is nasty. >> as mike mentioned, these remnants of hurricane ida delivering a historic soaking to the northeast, forcing a state of emergency declaration in new york. for the first time ever, the national weather service is issuing a flash flood emergency because of things like this. you can see water cascading into a new york subway station in brooklyn. we want to take a live look

right now and see what it looks like in the northeast as people are heading to work or out and about this morning in new jersey. a state of emergency was declared here. at least eight people have died. here is mona gosar rob the with the latest. >> overnight, dramatic images of the historic flash flood emergency in the northeast. what is left of hurricane ida humbling new jersey where at one point wednesday night, five inches of rain fell per hour. at newark airport, flooded. the airport suspending all flights last night, and for the first time ever, the national weather service issuing a flash flood emergency for new york city. water seen rushing into the subway station. subway service halted overnight. in the bronx, more than two dozen cars this man driving to safety. >> i was driving down and then i

was taking my time when i saw the car start floating. the car just start floating and shut off, then i looked crazy, you know? >> the new video showing a damage in a southern new jersey neighborhood, the family racing to the basement when the twister approached. >> if you look next-door, next-, [indiscernible] >> outside washington, d.c., a 19-year-old man died after his basement flooded. residents of the apartment complex saying the rush of water came out of nowhere. >> the whole living room was floating. it was rushing to our rooms. >> mona kosar abdi, abc news, new york. >> the red flag warning expired. the caldor fire is keeping things busy south lake tahoe. fire has burned 320 square

miles, flames are threatening 33,000 homes and structures. there is hope because crews have made headway with containment up to 23%. amy hollyfield's live in the newsroom for us. amy: they are feeling better about the fight and even some got to go home. they have kept a fire away from neighborhoods in south lake tahoe and away from the kirkwood and heavenly ski resorts. the fire is mostly burned in remote areas yesterday. it was a cooler, calmer night. feeling good about their chances. there are hidden threats that can change the course of the fight. >> right now, the winds are calming a little bit. the temperatures are dropping. the spot fires continue to be a problem for us. the other thing that could be a problem is downed trees or trees that have not fallen down that have been weakened by the fire and they can fall. we want to make sure our firefighters are at a safe

distance from that. >> another roadblock, covid. 16 firefighters tested positive and had to remove themselves from the job. they have more than 4000 firefighters on the fire and president biden has approved an emergency declaration for the areas affected by the caldor fire. the resources are there, the weather is backing down, the situation is looking better than at the beginning of this week. live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> it is such an unusual sight but look at kirkwood ski resort. same thing for heavenly, using snow machines to protect the grounds from wildfire. the cal fire chief told abc 7 news crews are working around-the-clock to stop the caldor fire from spreading there. >> an all-nighter would be let's say 36 hours before you go back to bed. >> firefighters are worried about the thousands of hotspots popping up because of the wind. less check in with meteorologist

mike nicco. things are better today, yes? mike: yes. we started to change things overnight through yesterday morning with the cold air and the calm or cold air sinking down into the valleys which really help the fire from sinking to the valleys also. that is why it has been stated at the higher elevations, the same set up this morning and moving forward. temperatures almost at the freezing level this morning, down in the valley. it gives you an idea of how chilly it is. right now, a southerly wind. through the day, it will crank up to possibly 80 miles per hour. you can see at home down again tonight, light and variable. tomorrow, a west wind at 14 miles per hour. so ember hopping will be less of a threat as we had through the next couple days. for us, we have an air-quality alert because of smoke. we talked about this yesterday, that it would get entrained into our sky and sure enough, it is there and will hang around for tomorrow. reggie?

reggie: president biden approved a request for presidential emergency declaration. this will provide direct federal assistance to communities devastated by the fire. kumasi: in the north bay this morning, the firefighters are making sure no hotspots are flaring up after a grass fire in lorain county. it was reported after 2:00 yesterday afternoon in lucas valley near mountain lassa drive. the wind gusts quickly scorched 44 acres. residents were evacuated as flames burned homes. >> i heard fire sirens coming up the street, and i looked out the backyard and saw flames there. i grabbed my cats, and by that time, they were banging on my door to run out. >> did you think you would lose your home with flames about 10 years away? >> definitely -- 10 yards away? >> definitely. then the wind took it up the hill. kumasi: those evacuation orders

were lifted. fire officials say some kind of machinery likely sparked it. my to notice during our fire coverage this qr code now shows on the bottom left of your screen. you can scan it and this will pull up the wildfire tracker for abc 7 so you can track the air quality in your neighborhood. reggie: onto the coronavirus. the cdc asking you to consider your risk before traveling this labor day weekend. this comes as a new variant is starting to raise concern. here's andrew debord. andrew: this morning, the cdc issuing a travel warning for labor day, telling vaccinated people to consider their risk, and telling him vaccinated people not to travel at all. >> if you are unvaccinated, we would recommend not traveling. >> covid hospitalizations across the country have hit a seven month high. the biden administration now moving forward on vaccine booster shots. fda advisers meet september 17

of gift cards. we have a whole vaccine team dedicated to getting you the very latest information. to ask us questions, go to abc7news.com/vaccine and click on the big blue box. reggie: the worst of the air quote -- mike: the worst of the air quality will remain over the tahoe basin and leaking into parts of nevada. you can see they are waking up to portal air quality -- poor unhealthy air. more modern around truckee and south lake tahoe. that is some of the colder, cleaner air that has been dipping into the valleys. back here, the difference yesterday, just about all of our reporting stations were green. now they are moderate. we are under that air quality alert. what does that mean? overall that air quality will be fine. it will look not find because the smoke is above us in the middle and upper parts of the atmosphere. as the emma's field -- atmosphere turns over, some of the smoke could come down and locally you could find spots where it becomes unhealthy. let's take a look at the latest

data from the near smoke forecast model, and you can see they had yellows and oranges over us as we head into the afternoon hours, especially in the north bay and east bay. overnight, we are looking at possibly slightly cleaner air, but there will be haze hanging around. but we have the northerly wind that will let up a little bit tomorrow so you can see the smoke is not going to be quite as bad into friday evening. it will continue to have a southerly wind develop. that is what will bring hot temperatures this weekend. as long as no fire develops to the south, it will have no smoke to transport our way. as it gets hotter, air quality will get a little better. i will show the newest numbers for the hot weekend coming up in the seven day forecast. let's get to sue and talk about the morning commute. sue: we have a traffic alert in livermore, westbound 580. we have a fatal accident, unfortunately. a pedestrian was hit near north livermore avenue. that is the bad news, the

terrible news. the corner is on the scene and you can see traffic packing up well past vasco road making your way down from the altamont pass with speeds under 15 miles per hour. the two left lanes remained blocked, the two right lanes are open. it is parshall opening westbound 580 at north livermore avenue due to this fatal accident. we will be following this and a couple stalls on the east bound non-commute direction of the bay bridge. we will be back with that in a minute. reggie: coming up, a little bore making people laugh with masks. kumasi: plus aiding local afghan refugees. the

reggie: police are trying to identify two men who attacked a woman on a popular trail. the woman says the two men came out of the bushes and try to grab her while she was walking on the stevens creek trail between creekside park and express parkway. she told officers she fought back and was able to run away. police looked around the area but did not find the attackers.

kumasi: across the bay area, actors are on their way to assist and house afghan refugees. men, women, and children who escaped to the taliban takeover will soon find homes in the united states. abc 7 news >> nonprofit organizations across the bay area brace for the arrival of afghan refugees, preparing by collecting donations, coordinating aid, and calling on residents to open their home. >> we have a lot of people and do not want to wait the last minute -- wait until the last minute to say well, let's see where they will come in. >> and they know the need will be great. she left afghanistan at 13 and beginning in 2005, returned annually. with the taliban takeover, she says the thousands of refugees expected to resettle in the region will need assistance beyond what could be easily offered. >> some of them left in the

middle of the night. some of them left without a shirt on their backs. so we have two mentally be patient with them. >> in the south bay, during and jim castleman know firsthand how impactful a little help could be. since 2018, they through jewish family services, each person was connected to job support programs, esl classes, and more. much needed services to prepare for their new life. >> we always knew and understood, and it was so easy to foster independents because all of the refugees we work with were looking at their future. >> a future the castlemans and others begin with basic needs and shelters. >> i think having a home that feels like a hoe makes the transition easier. because they are learning a new language, they are going to school or picking up job skills,

and they need a little time to adjust. kumasi: a village of tinyge of y for the homeless is going up near oakland. the crews are assembling 80 of these prefabricated quick built shelters on the side of what was a large encampment on first avenue and east 12th street. move in is had to happen over the next few weeks. reggie: harris may see a big change when shopping for your kids. the state legislature passed a bill focusing on how large department stores have displayed a child products. the bill will get rid of traditional pink and blue marketing for things like toys and toothbrushes. it does not apply to close. it would not outlaw traditional boys and girls sections in department stores. however it would require retailers to have a gender-neutral section. eight-year-old charlie hiltons got jokes. his philosophy, just because most kids have to wear a mask in school does not mean they cannot smile. the third-grader is using his

workers in new york charged in an alleged covid vaccination card scheme, accused of forging covid-19 vaccine cards. the manhattan district attorney saying some of the suspects charged with buying the cards work in hospital and nursing home settings. >> it is completely unacceptable and undermines public safety and confidence in public safety. >> the alleged mastermind, a 31-year-old of new jersey who authorities say sold at least 250 forged covid-19 vaccination cards through her now defunct instagram account under the alias anti-vaxmama. how did authorities know her card was fake? it is coming up at 7:00 a.m. i am area rush avenue, abc news, new york. >> at 530, a new safety feature on one social media platform. kumasi: also, the wild problems that ended with a homeowner's lawn being torn up. reggie: first, a live look

reggie: good morning on this thursday, september 7. abc 7 mornings is live on abc seven, hulu live, and wherever you stream. kumasi: we want to get a look at the weather overall with mike. mike: we will take a look at what is going on here and we will work our way to the higher elevation. we have a limited amount of fog this morning compared to the last couple mornings. when you get around 9:00-10:00, that is pretty much unlimited. there is cloud cover above us as a marine layer covers all of our neighborhoods. you can barely see parts of market from the tower. there is the tower stepping out. we are in the 50's and you can see the five cover will continue to spread into our neighborhoods through the morning commute. drizzle if we have any is most likely along the coast. cloud cover will be slow to go and it does not want to give up its real estate today. by noon, there is cloud cover around the bay. most of us will be in the 60's, greater outside activities. mainly 60's and 70's around the bay, 70's inland, if you 80's in

east extreme bay and northbay and act into the 60's out this evening. fire threats are lessened. still some issues remain. kumasi: thank you, mike. breaking news this morning, at least eight people are dead after the remnants of hurricane ida slammed the east coast with torrential rain and historic flash flooding. this is video of a rescue in the city. we want to take you live to newark, new jersey, where you can see cars still standing in water. this water rushed up on a lot of people so cars were stuck in the roadways. you can see the sun is coming up and people are trying to deal with the aftermath of that. a flash flood emergency was declared for the first time in new york city as subway stations returned -- were turned into waterfalls. subway service had to be suspended because of scenes like this. flooded stations in service this morning is still pre-limited. newark city declared a state of emergency.

in the bronx, two dozen cars on the highway. one man had to climb out of his window for safety. >> driving down and then i was taking my time when i see the car start floating. the car just start floating and shut off. then i looked crazy, you know? kumasi: and this new video shows the damage a tornado left behind in southern new jersey neighborhood. reggie: a limited number of flights are going in and out of newark airport this morning. the airport tweeted last night it suspended flights because of the severe flooding. abc said the united airlines has this to bended -- has suspended operations in their major hub in new york city. the person that shot the video says ewr, the newark airport code, added a swimming pool. airport had to divert passengers out of this flooded area. kumasi: this morning, new jersey

governor phil murphy is talking to george stephanopoulos on gma about the flash flood emergency. >> it was a heckuva night, george. we are still not out of the woods. tornadoes touching down as your reporter said, severe flooding, sadly loss-of-life. we would just bag folks to stay off of the roads, stay home if you can right now because we have a lot of trees to clean up, roads to clear up with stranded vehicles, and all i would say is there is a lot of her tiny new jersey and we will be there for folks. it will be a long road to recovery but we will be there with them. kumasi: you can watch this entire interview with new jersey's governor, including his thoughts on climate change's contribution to this. that a 7:00 a.m. on gma. there's lots of water down here. reggie: this weather disaster hits home for meteorologist rob marciano. this is his house. he calls the flooding in the northeast a horrific situation. >> if you are getting flooded, you are not alone. this weather disaster is home to me. i have this into the garage, into my basement, the whole lower floor of my house is flooded. i've cover these stories but never quite experienced one like this. i'm not looking forward to clean up. now i know what it feels like. reggie: oh boy. let's get a check with meteorologist mike nicco for the latest on this weather emergency. mike: we cover all of these disasters, talk to the folks it happens too, but you don't really understand it happens to you. i feel for rob and his family. good news, the heaviest of the rain is moving out. here we are in maine and heading toward nova scotia. that is where the rain is now. this is going back to 2:00.

watch the yellow and red's. talking about 10 hours of moderate to heavy rain out of the remnants of ida. you will now fast-forward and show you, look at this swath of wet weather it's left behind. nearly 12 to 13 inches in places like edison and willowbrook. that fell in 10 hour time frame. you cannot get rid of that water. that is why there is 287 reports of flooding in this area. to add insult to injury, it added five tornadoes. i think one of them was close to where drew is from. i saw on twitter he was telling his parents to get into the basement. that is scary. kumasi: definitely is. thank you. tomorrow, president biden is planning to visit louisiana to survey the damage from hurricane ida and speak with local and state leaders. louisiana's governor says the visit will be crucial for the president to understand the destruction by seeing the damage himself. later today, biden will deliver

a speech outlining his response to the storm. closer to home, firefighters gained promising ground on the caldor fire but it is a threat to neighborhoods in south lake tahoe. the winds have been shaping up and firefight has been intense, hour-by-hour. amy hollyfield's live in the newsroom tracking what they are dealing with. amy: good news, it was a cooler, calmer night. firefighters are getting a break in the weather. they held back fire yesterday. firefighters prioritize protecting the kirkwood ski resort area and that paid off. the fire did not reach the resort. they say it mostly burned in remote areas. there are still hidden hazards that could throw off progress. falling trees. they may be standing now but those we can from the fire could come down at any minute and cause problems. >> when they do fall, they cast embers and are thrown up to a half-mile away from the fire from.

that can cause problems with spot fires. >> there were some spot fires from members reported near the ski resorts yesterday. firefighters cut them under control before they caused big problems. there are more than 4000 firefighters on this fire. they lost 16 of them yesterday to covid. he tested positive and had to go home to recovery and quarantine. they also had a bulldozer catch fire on this job. i have had setbacks but they are still feeling confident and hopeful about the fight heading into today. live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: you can follow the major fires across the state and track the air quality in your neighborhood on the bottom left of your screen during our fire coverage. you will notice this qr code. if you scan it, it will pull the abc 7 wildfire trucker up on your phone. kumasi: another bay area city is adopting a vaccine mandate and the warriors will feel the pressure soon to get everyone vaccinated on the team. the abc 7 news -- our abc 7 news

anchor has the headlines. >> golden state warriors will not be able to play home games if on vaccinated because of san francisco's vaccine mandate that covers events with 1000 or more attendees. the team tells abc 7 news most on the team are fully vaccinated. a vaccine mandate is coming to berkeley. starting september 10, you will need to be fully vaccinated to dine or drink indoors, go to the gym, or attend any event with more than 1000 people. moderna submitted additional data to the fda for booster shots for the general public which could begin september 20. a new covid-19 variant identified in south africa is raising concern because it is highly mutated. >> it has mutations in the sites that make it replicate more rapidly and has other changes that may make it more difficult for antibodies to see and find. >> there are only a handful of variance identified but researchers say they will be watching for it.

reggie: in the east bay, there have been plans to delay reopening the hall. it will remain by appointment only and visitors will require a face mask. kumasi: a large study is revealing the value of masks and slowing the spread of covid, especially among older people. experts from stanford joined in the study of more than 350,000 people from villages across bangladesh. among the key findings, surgical masks helped to reduce covid-19 cases in adults 60 years or older by more than one third. the doctor says the doctor from stanford was the lead author. >> masks are definitely effective in preventing covid is the key take away. a surgical masks, we have more confidence they are very effective and the benefits are particularly high among these high-risk groups in the older age populations. kumasi: researchers also found

starts to mix and more smoke makes it down into the valleys. you can see purple throughout the tahoe valley and over toward reno and many of its smaller cities on the eastern side of the mountains. overnight, look at what happens, the wines come out of the east and some of this unhealthy air baxter colfax, auburn, and shingle springs. even some of the purple backs its way towards there as we head toward tomorrow. if you think about going up there, think twice. it will be a rough holiday weekend, and a lot of people have canceled. that is a smart move. 54 to 57, cloudy in san francisco, mid to upper 50's just about everywhere. we have some low 50's around palo alto and saratoga. your commute, because of the marine layer up to 3000 feet, it means the clouds are not as close to the ground. there is less moisture in there so barely any drizzle out there outside of the coast. just remember we have the air-quality alert. if you are a little sensitive to

reggie: a new outdoor exhibit at san francisco's presidio is celebrating the diverse experiences we have in our parks. more than 400 images from four different photographers are on display at the easy to walk exhibit called "my park moment." one of the photographers spoke about the importance of the exhibit and what it symbolizes for women of color. >> i'm just very grateful for the opportunity to show that black women are here, we are in the parks. just speaking for myself, this
