south lake tahoe is not quite qe safe yet. that fire has burned more than 210,000 acres. containment is at 25%. >> despite the improving conditions, thousands of evacuees from alpine and douglas county are being told to wait a little longer before returning home. this map shows the mandatory evacuations in red. calfire has evacuation orders for a few areas on the western edge of the fire zone. >> wayne freedman starts our team coverage live from el dorado county tonight. close good evening, this has been a day of trying to gain ground on a fire that has had his way for the last two weeks. it is dangerous. let's hear from calfire, talking about those conditions. >> we are taking advantage of

the weather we have today. we are putting crews to work with more direct attacks than they were able to do before. >> being aggressive still means taking risks. this moment along highway 89, as crews lit a fire to drive the flames back, you will see that is a very dry tree. exploding, sending everyone running in just a matter of seconds. today from the firefight here which saved nearby homes to this massive machine. it cuts trees with a soft and embraces them with steel arms and then tosses them aside before moving on. this in an effort to knocked down fuel and cut lines ahead of the caldor fire's roots. >> when you have massive fuel loads, you are feeding the fire so it is getting bigger and more intense. if you can take away that

intensity, you can bring the fire down to a manageable level. you have a place to make a stand. >> they they they which to make a stand. this is going to be a tough fight. nobody is taking one good day for granted. wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> before you go, that machine is pretty fascinating. those trees don't seem to stand a chance. how many trees can it take down? it looks very fast. >> they told me it could take down hundreds. we were watching it take down two or three at a time. we watched it take really big trees, wrapped steel arms around them, carry them off, it would do one of those trees every 30 seconds. that is 60 in an hour. it is more than that, 120 in an hour. that is some kind of machine.

still dry, 17%. the winds were out of the west and southwest. we are not expecting southwinds. they will shift direction out of the southeast at around four miles per hour. tomorrow afternoon, once again from the west, at this hour, you will notice the life picture from tahoe showing you how smoky it is. the air quality has declined. it is unhealthy and expected to remain very smoky until tomorrow. that is when things will start to improve briefly only to get worse again as we go into friday evening. our skies have turned hazy. i will be back with the smoke and air quality forecast. >> a fire that started yesterday flared back up around noon. fire crews responded and will remain in the lucas valley neighborhood to keep their eye on it. it is near 90% contained after scoring 44 acres. some kind of machinery likely sparked it. >> you may look at the air

of vaccination to enter many indoor businesses starting tomorrow. this applies to restaurants, bars, clubs and any indoor event spaces. gyms are also under the new order. 71% of berkeley residents are fully vaccinated. the city says that does not account for the uc berkeley campus population. vaccines there are mandatory. >> as the san francisco board of education considers additional restrictions, one doctor is: did -- calling the district out for measures she says are not medically warranted. >> this week, the san francisco wart of education held a special meeting to introduce a roadmap to covid recovery, a proposed resolution includes implement air filtration and ventilation in classrooms. heightened testing and tracing protocols for staff and students. student cohort groups to minimize social distancing for unbacked -- unvaccinated students. encouraging mask wearing on school grounds except when eating and providing

high-quality remote learning options. >> definitely not medically warranted. >> dr. j noble tweeted there are less than 10 children hospitalized either with covid or because of covid. there is not a pediatric surgeon in the bay area. they are calling a special meeting to further tighten covid protocols. not medically warranted. >> i think it is really important as a health professional to try to keep us grounded in the data, in the science. when you have fewer than 10 kids hospitalized in a large region, you don't have a surge. >> a spokesperson says the safety and well-being is the highest priority. writing in part that it is complying with all of the public health protocols for schools as specifically outlined by the experts at the san francisco department of public health. she feels the district is going beyond what public health officials are recommending.

the public will have a chance to comment on the proposed resolution before the board votes on it. she is hopeful educators won't get in the way of science. >> it is time to expertise of public health officials and to not try to get ahead of the science and put things into place that don't have data behind them. because of fear. >> in francis -- in san francisco, melanie woodrow. >> san francisco unified said 96% of staff who reported their vaccination status by the deadline are fully vaccinated. that is 8919 to be exact of txat nearly 10,000 employees. 280 said they are not vaccinated , 23 had appointments to be vaccinated and 66 are partially vaccinated. staff are required to be fully vaccinated by september 7 or get tested at least once a week. >> coming up, a violent august

commit violence and those who feel they may be victims of violence. >> mt. view police say they are looking for assault suspects tonight. they received a call from a woman on tuesday around 1:00. she was walking on stevens creek trail when two men came out of the bushes, grabbed her and try to pull her pants down. she fought them off and ran away. police released these sketches today. both are white men. the other was in his 40's. he had a large build and brown hair. >> governor newsom campaigned in san francisco's chinatown today where he claimed the recall effort is based partially on racial hatred. >> i am poor people to vote no on this recall. reject the hate, reject the division, reject the cynicism and the fear that is behind this recall. >>'s campaign has been boosted by new polls show support for the recall fading. a survey by the nonpartisan public institute of california

shows likely voters rejecting the effort with 58% opposing it and 39% in favor. challengers are not backing down. kevin faulkner also campaigned in san francisco, touting his record on homelessness while mayor of san diego. >> in san diego, we did not allow this on our sidewalks and we took aggressive action because we care about people. >> faulkner claims newsom has not taken the necessary steps to make a difference in the fight against homelessness. claiming the governor does not have the political will to make a difference on the streets. larry elder also went on the attack against newsom, claiming him of being soft on crime. >> he lives in a gated community , high walls, private security. he is fine. he was attacked by a homeless person. had he not had his security

independent contractors where the millions of california voters who overwhelmingly supported position 22. time for consumer news. >> michael finney joins us now with a look at today's headlines. another day, another tesla story. >> tesla is facing new challenges over its autopilot software. the new york times is reporting the national highway traffic safety administration is ordering tesla to hand over data by october 22 or face fines of more than one hundred million dollars. investigators are looking into incidents where tesla is an autopilot mode and allegedly crashed into parked first responder vehicles that have flashing lights. 12 pressures have been reported since 2018, resulting in 17 deaths. -- excuse me, 17 injuries and one death. users of benbow need to be on the lookout for a new scam.

conmen posing as friends and relatives are requesting emergency cash over the app using social media photos and usernames to make the request look really legitimate but the usernames are usually one character or number of from the real account. if you receive one of these emergency cash requests, it is always good to contact that person to make sure it is real before sending the money. finally, a study published by a robo call blocking app shows a slight decrease in robo calls. americans received 4.1 robo calls. this was 4.5% less than in july. the new color id regulations passed by the fcc for the decrease, robo calls all but disappeared, you may remember during the first stages of the pandemic. scammers have been reporting back to the workplace just like the rest of us.

catastrophic and record-setting, all-time record-setting rainfall. live doppler 7 is showing the moisture remnants of hurricane ida pushing up toward the northeast, toward quebec. they have had anywhere from eight to 10 inches of rain. it is a cold front and the remnants of that form a hurricane that caused that. they also had reports of ef two and ef3 tornadoes. in the bay area and out west, we are dealing with hazy skies from our cameras. we look toward the port of oakland. it is pretty difficult to see. definitely some wildfire smoke moving into our region. we have poor air quality for parts of the north bay. moderate across the entire bay area. the district updated the forecast. moderate air quality continuing tonight as we go into tomorrow. it starts to get a little better but not until late tomorrow

night and into saturday, a continuation of the bad air quality over the sierra nevada and northern california. here is a live you from our sfo camera. air-quality advisory remains up-to-date through tomorrow, it will be moderate tomorrow and then just in time for the labor day weekend, starting to see some improvement as there is more of the south wind pushing that smoke away from here. live doppler 7 showing some fog near the coastline. you see those temperatures anywhere from the 50's to the 70's, a few low to mid 80's up north. these temperatures well below average once again. we do have fog out there. it will be around near the coast and bay overnight. summer heat returns for labor day weekend. the hour-by-hour forecast showing that fog making a push locally and then tomorrow and then it pulls away except a few patches will hang around well into the afternoon. that is the typical summer pattern. fog in the morning, watch out,
